Rick Santorum Drops Out: GOP Presidential Candidate Suspends 2012 Campaign

2:13 pm - 04/10/2012
In a surprise decision Tuesday, former Sen. Rick Santorum (R-Penn.) will announce that he is suspending his presidential campaign, The Huffington Post's Jon Ward has learned and several other outlets have reported.

The Pennsylvania Republican had taken a break from the campaign trail for several days to tend to his ailing daughter, Bella. He had pledged to continue campaigning through the upcoming Pennsylvania primary. But the combination of his daughter's sickness and recent poll numbers showing him possibly losing his home state apparently prompted the early departure.

The announcement is expected to come during an address in Gettysburg, Penn. According to Yahoo! News, Santorum called Mitt Romney earlier in the day to inform him of his decision to suspend his campaign.

Santorum's decision removes any lingering doubt that Romney will end up the Republican presidential nominee. The former Massachusetts Governor held a seemingly insurmountable delegate lead prior to Santorum's departure, though his campaign was planning on spending between one and two million dollars against Santorum in Pennsylvania.

This is going to be a fun year. We have the Olympics, and the elections. Woooo.

I hope Obama takes Romney down.

That's how I feel.
friedgold_x 10th-Apr-2012 06:48 pm (UTC)
I'm torn because I feel terrible for his daughter and worry about the diversion of cash on to tearing down Obama.. but then at the same time. HALLELUJAH.
angry_chick 10th-Apr-2012 06:48 pm (UTC)

Sorta sad, because I want for Obama to breeze through this round of elections. But ultimately, Romney isn't a favorite of a lot of Republicans either.

I feel like they're experiencing what Democrats did in 2004. You had John Kerry and John Edwards duking it out and then Howard Dean was a pretty close third contender. Kerry did win the nomination pretty overwhelmingly, but it wasn't quick and dirty, and nobody was really excited about John Kerry, so it's not really surprising that we lost the 2004 elections. Especially to a GOP incumbent that was using 9/11 for all its worth.

I wish good luck with his daughter, but as for him:

I pray that Santorum gets behind Newt and not Romney. I would diiiiiiie.
fightingwords 10th-Apr-2012 10:12 pm (UTC)
You said "behind."

Not to be a party pooper, but i don't know why you guys are so happy/surprised? I mean, it was inevitable... and even if you're happy that he dropped out, he still won the agenda setting victory; plus, romney probably now has his supporters' vote.
So... yay but meh.
nikoel 10th-Apr-2012 08:33 pm (UTC)
Except that Fundies still hate Romney and I'm predicting they'll end up staying home on general election day. That's a win in and of itself!

if only he would drop out of life
akisawana 10th-Apr-2012 06:59 pm (UTC)
While this means that Romney no longer has to spend money fighting him, I don't trust this country to not have elected him. Best news I've had all day.
mrasaki 10th-Apr-2012 11:17 pm (UTC)
mte. While I can understand the people who were hoping that he'd stick around to make Romney waste time, money, and energy and make Obama a shoo-in........I don't have as much faith in humanity as that.

Looooool. John King, stoooop.

Started the countdown clock on this the second I heard he was taking Monday off to be with his daughter. I wish her well, but I'm glad Santorum is out.

I really trully hate this guy as a person but I can respect him as an individual because it's been stated in several articles that part of the reason he's dropping out is because his daughter is really sick.

I hope he spends some time with her and I'm glad he's out of the race. C:
chaya 10th-Apr-2012 07:45 pm (UTC)
Tbh it's great that he cares about his kid but I don't think that's enough to make me respect him in spite of how he looks down on queer people.
serendipity_15 10th-Apr-2012 07:22 pm (UTC)
Happy he's gone, not gonna miss him. I did wish that he'd stay until Pennsylvania though because all the polls were saying that he was losing his gap to Romney and I REALLY wanted to see him lose his home state...again.

Hopefully his daughter will get better.

Waiting for the Duggar reaction post TBH. :P

first thing I thought of. JimBob going 'Well it's God's Will that Santorum be president.'

I want to find that ridiculous man, dance around him whilst looking like an Orangutan and scream, "WHERE IS YOUR GOD NOW?!"
kalikahuntress 10th-Apr-2012 07:24 pm (UTC)
I hope his daughter recovers soon.

As for him, good riddance and it didn't happen soon enough but I'm glad to be rid of him.

I almost wish he would have ended up as the republican nominee.. he sucks so much that I feel like he would have scared a lot of voters to my side of the ballot box
fishnet_hamster 11th-Apr-2012 01:11 am (UTC)
I agree. To be honest, I was surprised he had managed to maintain support for as long as he did.
