Georgia to require drug tests for welfare benefits

4:48 pm - 04/16/2012
Georgia Gov. Nathan Deal has signed legislation that would require thousands of people applying for welfare to pass a drug test before they could receive benefits.

The Republican-controlled Legislature passed the law over the opposition of Democrats.

Backers say it will ensure that welfare benefits are used for their intended purpose and not to subsidize drug use and criminal activity. Democrats said the measure places an unfair burden on the poor.

Gerry Weber of the Southern Poverty Law Center said the organization is prepared to file a lawsuit over the issue, but not until it is put into practice. It takes effect July 1.

A similar law in Florida took effect last July but was blocked by a federal judge in October.

At least two dozen states have proposed measures this year that would require drug tests for benefits.

ellonwye 16th-Apr-2012 10:38 pm (UTC)
Ah yes because no rich folk touch the stuff
kitanabychoice 16th-Apr-2012 10:56 pm (UTC)
I had a debate about this on facebook the other day and it just devolved into "well if *I* have to do it to get a job, they should have to do it too if they're gonna be taking my money!!!!"
lux_roark 17th-Apr-2012 12:54 am (UTC)
I used to work in a pharmacy as a tech and I never had to do a drug test, but I had to do one to work at Nine West in the mall at 17.
peace_piper 16th-Apr-2012 11:05 pm (UTC)
*groan*

Also, two DOZEN states? What the fuck is going on lately??
the_axel 17th-Apr-2012 08:19 pm (UTC)
It's a great way to move money from tax payers to people that own the companies that do the drug testing.

Companies like Florida Governor Rick Scott's Solantic.

I'm probably going to get completely flamed for this -but I sort of agree. I realize that it's invasive, but the people who are applying for welfare and take a drug test and the test comes out clean have nothing to worry about.

I mean, some people have to take drug tests for jobs (I did...for a two week seasonal job at Tiffany & Co. seriously), and you can decline the test, you just don't get the job or the welfare in that case.
shadwrayvn 16th-Apr-2012 11:10 pm (UTC)
I agree with you! I know its invasive & I work in health care & drug testing is common for employees hell most jobs I have work drug tested people pretty frequently so the idea of testing doesn't bother me.
shadwrayvn 16th-Apr-2012 11:13 pm (UTC)
I know I'm gonna get flamed but I agree with the drug testing. Most jobs I have worked drug tested employees regularly so I don't get what the big deal is.
the_gabih 16th-Apr-2012 11:15 pm (UTC)
The fact that you're spending a huge amount of government money in order to pander to people who want to save it, when only a tiny proportion of welfare recipients are actually going to lose their benefits (which won't nearly make up for the money spent on finding out who they are), maybe?
spiffynamehere 16th-Apr-2012 11:26 pm (UTC)
You know who should get mandatory drug testing? Government officials. After all, they're getting paid with OUR TAX DOLLAHS! and given the shit they've been spouting out, I'm pretty sure some of them ARE on illegal drugs.
xerox78 17th-Apr-2012 12:22 am (UTC)
I agree. I wager that more of my tax dollars (well, more like my tax pennies these days) go to politicans' salaries and benefits than welfare and food stamps. And they have actual control over our lives.

Someone should start a movement for this.

EDIT: People who get any kind of benefits from the government should have to take drug tests too. I'm looking at you Big Oil, Big Pharma, Big Religion, Wall Street, 1%.... Honestly, I think a lot of "regular" people would support something like that, until they realized they would be on the hook for the tax benefits they get for their dependents, marital status, education, mortgages, etc. Oh well, if you're not on drugs, you have nothing to worry about, right?

hellaine 16th-Apr-2012 11:33 pm (UTC)
yeah because it worked out so well for Florida.
hellaine 16th-Apr-2012 11:34 pm (UTC)
also 'well i had to get drug tested for my retail job!'

the problem isnt that because you had to everyone should have to, the problem is, in my belief anyone, these jobs shouldn't require drug testing anyway. who the flying fuck cares if the dude ringing me up at walmart kills a bong every night after work FFS.
sobota 16th-Apr-2012 11:33 pm (UTC)
oh home sweet home, may i never return to you ever again.
lovedforaday 16th-Apr-2012 11:44 pm (UTC)
it's funny how the ~base doesn't mind their TAX DOLLARS being wasted on shit like this. they wouldn't mind the state spending $10 billion on drug tests if it kept even one person from "leeching off the system."
farting_nora 16th-Apr-2012 11:46 pm (UTC)
they hate poor people more than they love saving money.
lexiloumarie 16th-Apr-2012 11:46 pm (UTC)
So if you get a false postive, sorry you and your kids will have to starve. Or not pay bills. Because g-d knows you can't afford to appeal.

Assholes.
chaya 17th-Apr-2012 01:54 pm (UTC)
I can't believe there are still so many people that stan these drug tests and are blissfully unaware of the false positives rate.
mollywobbles867 16th-Apr-2012 11:51 pm (UTC)
Is the state going to pay for the drug tests?

Where are the jobs?
hellaine 16th-Apr-2012 11:51 pm (UTC)
i'm gonna take a shot in the dark here and guess that the drug welfare recipients buy the most--if any at all!--is probably alcohol.
violetrose 16th-Apr-2012 11:55 pm (UTC)
Oh joy of all joys we already have the 'well this is totes okay!' comments.

Ugh, this is going to be as that Food Stamps post.
farting_nora 16th-Apr-2012 11:57 pm (UTC)
Was there a recent one, or are you thinking of every food stamp or welfare post that has ever been posted here?
poetic_pixie_13 17th-Apr-2012 12:02 am (UTC)
Drug addicts are, y'know, actual human beings. Instead of making their lives harder by taking away social services and thus probably forcing them to rely on drugs even more to deal we could, idk, actually offer treatment and rehabilitation. Especially since there are quite a few people who use in order to self-medicate because of mental illnesses. A lack of access to treatment and medication means it's the only way to survive.

Tbh, I'd rather someone who's addicted get welfare and have a chance to get treatment than end up homeless on the street and have to rely on crime, sex work or dealing in order to get by.
hera_bearrra 17th-Apr-2012 08:11 am (UTC)
I really wish these people were able to go to rehab and get the help they need. We need a program like this.

And instead of sending people with addictions to prison, send them to rehab instead. Our system is fucked up.
intrikate88 17th-Apr-2012 12:07 am (UTC)
Hello, thread wank that I thought we'd moved past.

So how soon can I vote against Nathan Deal? This fucker has been consistently awful his entire time in office. And iirc, he was actually the more liberal option, last election. Somebody please tell me I get to vote against him this year and, I dunno, some black Democrat liberal former mayor of Atlanta is running for governor?

...yeah, I really need to check on that.
sobota 17th-Apr-2012 01:12 am (UTC)
He wasn't the more liberal option, seeing as there was a Democrat running. I voted for him because Deal terrified me, even though Barnes was sort of a milque toast option.

vanishingbee 17th-Apr-2012 12:07 am (UTC)
since this sort of testing would cost more than it saves, it really makes the most basic agenda of attacking poor people rather than poverty very clear.
ascendings 17th-Apr-2012 12:26 am (UTC)
so are they going to offer help to the people who test positive for drugs?

yeah didn't think so.
lil_insanity 17th-Apr-2012 03:29 pm (UTC)
MTE
celtic_thistle 17th-Apr-2012 01:13 am (UTC)
OH FOR FUCK'S SAKE, this is seriously some of the stupidest, most pointless shit I've ever heard. Did we not learn from Florida's debacle? What a complete waste of fucking time and money. And what a degrading mess.

Protip for all these other legislatures considering similar bullshit: poor people on welfare do not owe you any explanation or justification for their lives/choices. Fuck off.
psychesky 17th-Apr-2012 01:15 am (UTC)
Lol, using drugs doesn't always mean you paid for them. There are plenty of people willing to pass a joint at a party. Don't hang out with generous friends if you want welfare, I guess.

I do think if you have a certain fixed amount of money a month, government provided or not, and you are spending it on drugs rather than necessary food and shelter, you should probably look into getting help. But starving people out is not helping them. This is such a condescending thing.
erunamiryene 17th-Apr-2012 01:43 am (UTC)
Problem is that the number one "program" in America for "help" is the (for-profit) prison system.
erunamiryene 17th-Apr-2012 01:41 am (UTC)
Cause if you're an addict, no food for you. Also, IIRC, if you popped on the Florida test, you couldn't let a family member claim your kids so THEY could eat either, so we'll go ahead and punish the NEXT generation, too! :D Because I have to take a drug test, and I don't care, so it's totally fine!

Besides, America has a great program in place for helping people get past their drug addictions: it's called for-profit prison! :D
lil_insanity 17th-Apr-2012 03:30 pm (UTC)
if you popped on the Florida test, you couldn't let a family member claim your kids

That is so fucked up.
simplefaith08 17th-Apr-2012 01:46 am (UTC)
Morally questionable aspects of this aside (since others have already covered them better than I would have)

They already tried this in Florida! And when they looked at the numbers, it turned out that there weren't enough people on welfare on drugs for the testing to be cost-effective! Ugh.
alizara 17th-Apr-2012 01:48 am (UTC)
I'm getting a lot of usage out of my "Brain Borked" icon today.
bnmc2005 17th-Apr-2012 02:00 am (UTC)
If this is gonna pass. I want drug test for all us senators and congresspeople.
hera_bearrra 17th-Apr-2012 08:14 am (UTC)
A lot of people on Wall Street use cocaine, apparently.
effervescent 17th-Apr-2012 03:00 am (UTC)
Not only is this humiliating and unnecessary, but it's a colossal waste of time because as soon as people hear about it, they'll figure out ways to get around it.

I swear some people would just love it if they could lock welfare recipients up and have only 'approved' items delivered to them, or something.
lil_insanity 17th-Apr-2012 03:32 pm (UTC)
I swear some people would just love it if they could lock welfare recipients up and have only 'approved' items delivered to them in forced labor/concentration camps, or something.

There, I fixed that for you. :/
