Huntsman Speaks Some Truth Then Backpedals

Huntsman compares GOP to communist China

Via Zeke Miller, Jon Huntsman poured gasoline onto the national Republican Party tonight, then struck a match.

In an appearance at the 92nd Street Y in which he was interviwed by Jeff Greenfield, Huntsman compared the GOP to China's communist party, failed to let words escape his mouth about his support for Mitt Romney (nodding instead that he still backs him) and echoed the Democratic talking point that Ronald Reagan would "likely not" get elected in the current, hard-right Republican party:

Huntsman, the former Utah governor and once President Barack Obama's Ambassador to China, expressed disappointment that the Republican Party disinvited him from a Florida fundraiser in March after he publicly called for a third party.

"This is what they do in China on party matters if you talk off script," he said.

The problem with public venting by former candidates is that it's, well, public. Huntsman, who's in the midst of his own public image rehab, clearly feels that he was stunted by a party that's been swayed by the tea party over the last three years - and does not blame his own performance as a candidate.

And while he says he believes Romney would be better than President Obama, the man who tapped him to be Ambassador to China, after reading Miller's dispatch, it's not hard to imagine Huntsman announcing sometime in the fall that he is no longer with Romney.

Jon Huntsman explains China comment

Jon Huntsman on Monday attempted to explain comments comparing the Republican party to the Chinese communist party.

Huntsman, the former Utah governor, said on MSNBC on Monday that the night before he was “waxing philosophical” when he brought up Republicans and China. But then, he said, “you get these blogs out there, you know, Bottom-feeder, Buzzsaw, Buzzfeed, whatever they are, and they take a sentence out of context and it becomes a headline and pretty soon mainstream newspapers pick up on that.”

In an appearance at the 92nd Street Y in New York City Sunday, Huntsman, President Barack Obama’s former ambassador to China, told interview Jeff Greenfield that he was disappointed that he had been disinvited from a Republican fundraiser in March after he publicly called for third party.

“As we were talking about that last night,” Huntsman said on “Morning Joe” Monday, “I said, you know, if you’re not on-script and you get knocked out of an event like that – the parties are supposed to be big-tent, you're supposed to bring in all ideas – and I said, I thought for a moment about what they do in China if you go off-script. The party, they knock you out. We shouldn’t be doing that here, we should be accommodating all voices.”

After noting his March disinvitation, Huntsman, according to Buzzfeed said: “This is what they do in China on party matters if you talk off script.”

I'm pretty sure that if you piss off the Party in China they ship you off to a "reeducation camp," not put you in their burn book like they're a clique in Mean Girls. But you go on, bb.

Dude must be some kind of pissed if he's talking like this in public. It's true, although China's "knock you out" is much worse than what he's faced, and we all know how the GOP feels about things that are truthy, let alone the slightest bit true.

Technically, what he says is accurate. The monolithic party line took precedence over any views of the individual candidates long ago. Some people think this 'unity' is a strength, but when you have unknown and non-accountable 'party leaders' basically feeding text to puppet candidates, it's a situation where any pretense of representation of any view but this party elites' may as well be abandoned.
