Sean Harris (pictured, left), the senior pastor at Berean Baptist Church in Fayetteville, is a strong supporter of North Carolina's proposed antigay Amendment One. In Sunday's sermon, Harris screams like a maniac about cracking limp wrists and punching young children who exhibit gender-variant behavior. You know, there's this story I've heard about self-righteous people like this going to heaven only to be met by God who says "I know you not". I suspect Mr. Harris is going get that greeting.

URGHHH. It's not like he's alone in spouting this type of shit, either. Thanks again religion for making sure people know that policing and forcing ~traditional~ gender roles matters more than just about anything else, including children's well being.

I know someone who goes to this church. She commented that she didn't think he was being serious but agrees that we should make our sons man up and not let them do girly things. I deleted her last night, my lord.

My father called me down the hall about half an hour ago to watch Anderson Cooper's report about this. He's listened to the audio. I haven't. Lots of boiling blood in this house tonight, either way. I wish I could say this is unbelievable to see happening, but sadly, I can't.

Perfect storm of self-righteousness, homophobia and misogyny. Over the years, I've noticed that a fair amount of anti-LGBT arguments stem specifically from sexism -- this seemingly primal terror that men will be 'sullied' if they engage in anything considered as 'typically feminine' and thus 'weak' and supposedly unworthy of their high and mighty selves, whereas women will 'forget their place' and no longer think about pleasing men with their appearance and behavior.

I have no doubt that far more factors play into this, but the misogyny consistently comes up, one way or the other.

There must a lot of those defective Bibles. I work at a religious school. None of the Bibles in our library have a passage like that. "Sissy" doesn't even appear in any concordance. Fancy that?

So this pastor would basically have advised my parents to beat me for dressing and acting like a boy since that's what I was comfortable with? Yeah no, this guy is an ass and a half for advocating child abuse. His follow up response isn't any better either, child abuse is NOT a joking matter.

People who don't conform to the traditional gender binary should be embraced and loved for themselves, not rammed into an inappropriate box because society says so.
