Mod post: in which I say "tags" so often it stops looking like a word

8:01 pm - 05/09/2012
Since our community was upgraded to a paid account (hopefully LJ will soon make such upgrades unnecessary for us), I recently went through and added a ton of new tags. Yay! However, there is a catch. See, tags with zero uses are invisible to non-moderators.

What does this mean? You can add a tag for, say, Guinea or Estonia. But only if you know the tag exists, because you have to add it manually instead of selecting from the list. I... do not know why LJ decided to make this the way it is, but there you have it.

Now, I did go back and tag a few of the requested entries, which means those tags are visible (including the long-awaited "men suck" tag). But since not all of them are, here is a list of the current 0-use tags - remember these have to be used as is, so that means entering "trinidad and tobago" instead of "trinidad & tobago", for instance.

angola, antigua and barbuda, azerbaijan, bahamas, belize, benin, bhutan, botswana, brunei, bulgaria, burkina faso, burundi, cameroon, cape verde, central african republic, chad, comoros, croatia, cyprus, côte d'ivoire, democratic republic of the congo, djibouti, dominica, dominican republic, east timor, ecuador, el salvador, equatorial guinea, eritrea, estonia, ethiopia, fiji, gabon, grenada, guatemala, guinea, guinea-bissau, guyana, hong kong, jamaica, kosovo, kuwait, laos, latvia, lesotho, luxembourg, macau, madagascar, malawi, maldives, mali, mauritania, mauritius, moldova, montenegro, morocco, mozambique, namibia, nicaragua, niger, omar, papua new guinea, paraguay, portugal, qatar, republic of the congo, romania, saint kitts and nevis, saint lucia, saint vincent and grenadines, samoa, seychelles, sierra leone, singapore, slovenia, solomon islands, suriname, swaziland, são tomé and príncipe, tajikistan, tanzania, the gambia, togo, tonga, trinidad and tobago, turkmenistan, uruguay, uzbekistan, vanutau, zambia

+ feel free to use this post to request any new tags you want, if they are sufficiently useful they will be added.

We do have a poe's law tag.

I swore I looked. Huh. *looks*

With CTRL+F "poe" I only see "poetry" and "subpoena'd!" Is it invisible? Are you thinking of the "godwin's law" tag?
moonshaz 11th-May-2012 05:24 am (UTC)
I don't see "poe's law", either.

Now I think of it, maybe "not the onion" covers the same ground. Hmm.

Some parts of Livejournal (some styles, some clients, some of the web views) have problems with some tags that have an apostrophe. I've seen this problem with the charts 'n' shit and puttin' the ontd in ontd_political tags, but not with others (like the don't ask don't tell tag, or the bill o'reilly tag).

Check the tags on this entry: http://ontd-political.livejournal.com/9605466.html That is tagged with the poe's law tag.

Ah, I see. I see it on the linked entry, but it's still not in the tag list. And "godwin's law" shows up fine. Interesting. I am forcing style=mine on all comms using the style for seeing classic comments. Do you know if it's a known issue, or should moonshaz and I do bug reports?

I wonder what other tags I don't see? *frown*

I don't know if it's a known issue or whether or not a bug report would be helpful. (Before Brad left I used to pay attention to LJ's codebase and pitch in where I could, but now I don't because I find the current dev team to be both arrogant and incompetent.) I do know it's a problem with various views; I use livejournal.com/update.bml to compose posts to _p and its tag popup is missing lots of tags--including ones that don't have apostrophes; the other day I couldn't see the "barack obama" tag, for example. It's weird, and I haven't nailed down a pattern yet.

Now I'm even more curious. I bet the only way to find a pattern would be to have a post where people comment with what kind of account they have, what style they're using, y/n on forcing style=mine, and a copy+paste of what tags are visible to them on the tag list. Or have the main post be a complete tag list and the commenters themselves say which ones are not visible to them. That would be hell to go through, though.

poe's law tag. There's even an article that uses it.
