Catholic Bishops Challenge Girl Scouts USA For Conflict With Church Teachings

5:34 am - 05/11/2012
NEW YORK — Long a lightning rod for conservative criticism, the Girl Scouts of the USA are now facing their highest-level challenge yet: An official inquiry by the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops.

At issue are concerns about program materials that some Catholics find offensive, as well as assertions that the Scouts associate with other groups espousing stances that conflict with church teaching. The Scouts, who have numerous parish-sponsored troops, deny many of the claims and defend their alliances.

The inquiry coincides with the Scouts' 100th anniversary celebrations and follows a chain of other controversies.

Earlier this year, legislators in Indiana and Alaska publicly called the Scouts into question, and the organization was berated in a series aired by a Catholic broadcast network. Last year, the Scouts angered some conservatives by accepting into a Colorado troop a 7-year-old transgender child who was born a boy but was being raised as a girl.

Some of the concerns raised by Catholic critics are recycled complaints that have been denied by the Girl Scouts' head office repeatedly and categorically. It says it has no partnership with Planned Parenthood, and does not take positions on sexuality, birth control and abortion.

My troop always said "serve my community and country" rather than "serve god and my country"... Which I think is better anyway, tbh.

Yep, we had "To serve God and Canada..." but we also had the non-religious alternative. I don't recall if anyone used it because we were all raised Catholic/generally some kind of Christian and were frankly all too young to really question the whole why-is-God-everywhere thing.

Apart from that, though, the troop was zero religious and we just did cool stuff like go camping and crafts.
sitakhet 11th-May-2012 01:21 pm (UTC)
I kind of wish I hadn't quit after Girl Guides and went on to Pathfinders.
flyingwild 11th-May-2012 01:39 pm (UTC)
Honestly?

Fuck the Catholic church.
evilgmbethy 11th-May-2012 01:56 pm (UTC)
IN OTHER NEWS, I hear that people are now taking the GSA to task because the promote liking camping and having fun.

Seriously, every single one of these "complaints" are beyond ridiculous. Who gets angry at Doctors Without Borders, for fuck's sake???
kyra_neko_rei 11th-May-2012 02:45 pm (UTC)
Don'cha know? Contraception is EEEEEEEEVIL, and preventing the creation of unwanted babies is horrible enough to outweigh all the lives they save.
erunamiryene 11th-May-2012 02:04 pm (UTC)
Well, clearly, the Catholic church is in the best place to be a moral arbiter, what with their spotless record throughout history.

Critics contend that Girl Scouts materials shouldn't contain links to groups such as Doctors without Borders, the Sierra Club and Oxfam because they support family planning or emergency contraception.

kyra_neko_rei 11th-May-2012 02:46 pm (UTC)
So . . . an organization that has no problem with contraception shouldn't be supporting contraception?

Ur logic. It haz flawz.
a_leprechaun 11th-May-2012 05:06 pm (UTC)
I'm thinking the GTFO was directed at the people saying they shouldn't link to those groups.

How did I miss Loki winking at me during the movie??? I know I have already failed by only seeing it once so far, but still....

I mean, he was steaming sexyness all over the screen for me during each of his scenes, so how could I not see his personal wink for me?? I am 100% certain of these things...

/needs to watch movie again

I can't wait to put my future daughter in Girl Scouts.

Whenever attacks come out against them, it seems to be from organizations I want no part of. Now if only there was a similar organization for boys.
free_spoons 11th-May-2012 03:11 pm (UTC)
I love that every story about the girl scouts tends to be about how awesome they are/are becoming.

It makes me excited for cookie time so I can fill up on my Tagalongs and Thin Mints guilt free :)
mirhanda 11th-May-2012 04:47 pm (UTC)
Ok, it's official. I was already concerned after they told the nuns to stop with the social justice and go picket some women's clinics, but this cinches it. The church has lost it collective mind. I blame pope Palpatine.
carmy_w 11th-May-2012 09:09 pm (UTC)
Yep. Here's hoping that "someone" gets hit with a bolt of lightning while he's up on his balcony! And sooner rather than later!
mirhanda 12th-May-2012 02:07 am (UTC)
That would be sweet, sweet justice!
jwaneeta 11th-May-2012 05:25 pm (UTC)
I think I should note, though, that 90% of lay Catholics don't care what bishops say -- see: contraception. This is just bullying, a standard bishopric pastime.
clutzycricket 11th-May-2012 07:24 pm (UTC)
There is a problem, though, if the bishops make it so that churches can't offer meeting spaces. So many troops use local churches as meeting spaces, probably free of charge, because they are convienent-I could walk to both of my troops' meeting spots growing up, because so many churches are where people are. Other places to meet might be more difficult, charge money, or so on.

What really drives home the disconnect between the Magisterium and the actual teachings of Jesus of Nazareth is the opposition to Doctors Without Borders and Oxfam.

Granted I'm not a theologian, nor am I a Roman Catholic any more, but I'm pretty sure that James 1:27, Proverbs 21:13, Proverbs 28:27, James 2:15-17, and especially Matthew 25:34-46 are still part of the accepted Biblical canon and don't become null and void as soon as family planning is mentioned.
spiffynamehere 11th-May-2012 06:28 pm (UTC)
...But Girl Scouts isn't Catholic. WHAT IS GOING ON HERE.

......And they really shouldn't be near kids. Can we file something legally preventing that?

Gotta say, this just makes me like the Girls Scouts more.
ohnotaylor 11th-May-2012 06:55 pm (UTC)
I am so tired of groups like the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops, One Million Moms, and those of their ilk always trying to stick their nose where they don't belong. Keep your bigotry away from me! The entitlement of these people make my brain hurt.
mercat 11th-May-2012 07:04 pm (UTC)
GSA KEEP BEING AWESOME. <3

As an ex-Catholic this just makes me laugh heartily, especially since I just read an article this morning about how "Christians fighting against [insert topic] instead of for [insert positive thing] was causing the severe loss of members under 40".

I also consider myself very lucky to have had my dad (Eagle scout) step in as our leader for several years, we did a lot of stuff most GS troops didn't get to do. (Fixed up a bus and went on road trips, winter camping, kayaking...)

I know Venture Scouting is owned by BSA, but do they tend to have the same issues?
tabaqui 11th-May-2012 08:11 pm (UTC)
Fuck the church. So sick and damn tired of their endless whinging on and on about anyone who isn't JUST LIKE THEM. Fuck off and go pray, you all need all the 'grace' you can fucking get.
lee_rowan 11th-May-2012 10:09 pm (UTC)
I'm delighted that the Girl Scouts don't parrot the catholic church's teachings. Covering up for child molesters, closing churches because they aren't suckering in enough paying customers, pretending that Jesus expected celibacy from priests, pretending that it's still 1300? No thanks.
nycscribbler 11th-May-2012 11:55 pm (UTC)
WHAT THE FUCK IS IT THEIR BUSINESS FOR? It's little girls, not little boys; why are they interested? FUCK THESE FUCKING FUCKS. It's not the medieval era anymore. They don't run the world. Clean up your own damn house first, then come back and meddle. Dumb fucking idiots. RAGE. RAAAAAAAAAAAAAGE.
