JEFFERSON CITY — In a locked chamber guarded by Missouri State Highway Patrol troopers, House Speaker Steve Tilley today inducted right-wing radio commentator Rush Limbaugh into the Hall of Famous Missourians in an invitation-only ceremony that excluded Democrats.
The ceremony, a departure from the open, welcoming events held for every other induction, excluded Democrats because most had signed a letter denouncing Limbaugh's inclusion in the hall, Tilley said afterward.
The controversial 61-year-old radio host was born in Cape Girardeau to a family that has included the state's oldest working attorney and a Missouri Supreme Court judge. In his remarks before introducing Limbaugh, Tilley called Limbaugh “the very definition of a famous Missourian.”
When Limbaugh's inclusion in the Hall of Famous Missourians was revealed earlier this year, he was embroiled in a controversy over sexual insults directed at a Georgetown University law student. A national furor erupted but Tilley did not back away.
“I cannot be bullied by people who want me to reverse my course,” he said to the chamber filled with GOP lawmakers and staff.
