President Obama cashing in on gay marriage stance, selling LGBT merchandise on BarackObama.com

2:34 pm - 05/15/2012

President Obama is banking on his endorsement of gay marriage to fill his campaign coffers.

His team is selling a slew of LGBT merchandise on BarackObama.com, just days after his historic backing of same-sex couples tying the knot.

The items include “I'm out for Obama" T-shirts, beer koozies that read "LGBT for Obama" and even baby onesies with messages like "My two moms support Obama.” The items cost anywhere from $10 to $40.

It's not clear how much the president has raised since making the announcement on Wednesday, but his re-election team brought in a cool $1 million in the first 90 minutes after Obama revealed his new stance.

His campaign staffers also have been sending out emails asking for donations and touting Obama's "direct answer" to the question of same-sex marriage.

His campaign raked in $15 million at a star-studded fundraiser at actor George Clooney's Los Angeles mansion on Thursday, where Obama brought up gay marriage.

Presumed Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney has said he believes "marriage is a relationship between a man and a woman" and that he will continue to hold that view.

Romney, however, has largely steered clear of the issue and has argued Obama is merely trying to distract voters.

This entire post is really just an effort to post images of a few of my very favorite things from the Obama store (I am NOT advertising or suggesting you purchase these items, FYI. 99% aren't even related to the LGBT campaign; they're just kind of awesome and the Biden stuff - oh, the Biden stuff! - I felt obligated to share.) Check out the store if you want to see the actual campaign merchandise.

So here is the requisite LGBT merchandise image:

1)

(But ... if it's so simple, then why did it take him so long to announce it?)

And here are my favorite things:

2)

I love this so very much. It's so ... Biden. And I love this as well:

3)

(back by popular demand, they note!)

4)

This is really interesting, since "Obamacare" has become such a negative catchphrase. What's more interesting is how the campaign has creatively spun the term ... I hadn't heard this before but it could actually make an interesting catchphrase when it's time for the Presidential debates:

"It’s called Obamacare because the President cares. Show that you do too with our new Obamacare Tee."

5)

Wait ... what?!?! Is this a youth-vote target thing? Because when I showed my mother and my grandmother, they had no idea that "BFD = big fucking deal."

Nor do they explain on the website, merely writing: "Stand with President Obama by reminding your friends and family that health care reform is still a BFD."

6)

This has a picture of his birth certificate on the back. I don't know if I've ever seen merchandise quite like this before. ("Swift Boat Veterans for Kerry"? No?)

The website says: "There's really no way to make the conspiracy about President Obama's birth certificate completely go away, so we might as well laugh at it -- and make sure as many people as possible are in on the joke."

Pretty clever.

7)

This is part of some "runway"/fashion collection of merchandise. I just wanted to point out the fact that they're not necessarily using typical body-type models and appreciate it for a moment.

Just for comparison's sake, I checked out the Republican stores. Romney's is beyond boring; I remember when Hillary and Obama were fighting it out, they had all kinds of interesting merchandise and different items for different "groups" of supporters. Romney just has a couple of shirts and stickers with his last name looking like the "branding identity" for some kind of huge corporation. [Tell me I'm wrong.]

Ditto on Santorum and Newt. Ron Paul's store, though ... Well. I don't really know what to say.

First, there are a bunch of 100-pack "issue cards" you should look at, just for the "huh?!?!".

1)

Here's one of them. The way he spins his position on Israel is really interesting. And unfortunate, IMHO, since he was one of the only candidates who actually considered Palestine from a humanitarian perspective rather than from an "electable" perspective. Also, what's the deal with enforcing DOMA if you're against big government?

2)

It's not the "End the Fed" wristband that kills me ... it's the diamond ring the hand model is wearing along with it! Intentional? Mistake? Who knows?!?!

3)

Ron Paul, father of the Tea Party ... wait, what? First, this is what the page says about it: "On December 16th, 2007, on the anniversary of the Boston tea Party, grassroots supporters of presidential candidate Ron Paul effectively launched the American Tea Party movement with a hugely successful fundraising “money bomb” for Congressman Paul’s campaign. Now we commemorate Ron Paul’s instrumental role in launching the Tea Party with this attractive new “Ron Paul — Father of the Tea Party” T-shirt. This black shirt with red and white lettering displays for all to see Ron Paul’s leadership in the American pro-taxpayer movement. Order your shirt today!!!"

First, I didn't think that the whole Tea Party involvement thing was something people were still proud of. Secondly, his editors should have capitalized the "T" in "Tea Party" and this, plus the barrage of exclamation points, is bothering me to an unreasonable degree for some reason. Thirdly, wasn't the Tea Party "movement" formed after Obama was elected? In 2009-ish? But instead of celebrating the actual "grassroots" origin (or so they claim) where they were protesting with Fox News, they're celebrating "money-bombing" Ron Paul's campaign? WHAT?!?!

I wonder if Romney's merchandise will ever get interesting.

The Washington Post had a hilarious editorial about Obama's store vs. Romney's, prior to the sudden inclusion of LGBT material.

'big fucking deal' is a reference to a comment from Biden about the passage of the health care bill (LoL bless him and his lack of a filter)

Selling. GBLT merchandise. Selling merchandise of GBLT rights. MARKETING equality...

Really?

After years of "evolving" they've already got "all equal before the law" tat ready to make money off the final "evolution" (of "let's leave it to the states")

Hmmmmm. This is my not impressed face.

If Obama had been honest from the start, I could be more for this, but... no. Just no.
brucelynn 15th-May-2012 08:18 pm (UTC)
You make it sound like he was lying the whole time

He indirectly made it clear he was for gay marriage in the past and to be fair he was been working towards making things better slowly but surely.

It's really not that easy for a politician to come out do what he has been doing.

Yep.
anna_karenina_x 15th-May-2012 08:21 pm (UTC)
This is a little crass. Especially since his support of gay marriage is limited to a "personal opinion" that won't actually change anything...

Yyyyup.

My GOODNESS the marketing and production teams work FAST, given that this JUST happened.

And that's all I'm saying.
fofomazuzu 15th-May-2012 08:38 pm (UTC)
Hasn't he always been selling merchandise towards the LGBT community, since the first campaign? Doesn't seem much different from then besides more material to go on.
baked_goldfish 15th-May-2012 09:00 pm (UTC)
I know a couple of these items existed prior to Biden's MTP appearance, but I don't recall the store having an entire category. Although now I think about it, I'm not sure they broke anything down by category anyway during the 2008 election? I can't remember.

i'm feeling a bit iffy about this. i know that there's always merchandise for different groups like women, poc, vets, etc., but i think the 'out for obama' and 'obama pride' are kind of eh.
baked_goldfish 15th-May-2012 09:04 pm (UTC)
They need a premium Biden collection that has the BFD shirts. Both the original one and the new "still a BFD" one. I love my BFD shirt.

I wonder if Romney's merchandise will ever get interesting.

He should sell oven mitts, if he doesn't already.

LOL @ Oven Mitt's. Also Mittens.
ladypolitik 15th-May-2012 09:18 pm (UTC)
Yeah, this article is misleading. The Obama campaign has always sold LGBTQ-themed swag, along with other merch that directly appeal to specific voter demographics/minority groups (people on this comm were sporting "Women for Obama"/"Students for Obama/"Afro-Americans for Obama"/etc. icons based on such merch, 4 years ago). This marketing formula is 5 years old.

Really, the issue should concern whether you've always had beef with the campaign market formula of marketing to marginalized groups (and plenty of people have). Obviously last week boosted sales of LGBTQ merch, but it'd be delusional to believe said merch wasnt already sitting in Obama 2012 warehouses for weeks, and wouldnt have appeared on the official campaign website even if Biden had said nothing, and Obama remained in a state of Evolution™.

Truth. I remember all the Moms, Women, African American, Latino...stuff and I'm pretty sure there was LGBT stuff then too as well as groups that one can join to talk about the issues of that group. I still get regular e-mails from the Black/Latino group.

The merchandise has been around for awhile. Unless they've gotten new stuff just this week than this is weak at best.

This: His campaign staffers also have been sending out emails asking for donations and touting Obama's "direct answer" to the question of same-sex marriage. This is a little more sketchy to me.

I'm willing to support him for issuing the Presidential Memorandum reaffirming the rights of gay couples to make medical decisions for each other. Among other things.

When I was in the hospital not one nurse, doctor or staff member questioned the right of my partner to be there at my side. She got all the information we needed when I was exhausted or unable to pay attention. She asked for information and the surgeons went to her directly after my procedure and gave her all the details about my recovery. This is not something I take for granted. Sad as it is - I know someone had to make this happen on a policy level.

I know the president isn't personally responsible for these medical officials behaving ethically. I also know that my basic right to be treated like a human being isn't something that should be bandied about by politicians and preachers and ignorant pundits. But, IMO, Obama has done more good than harm than any other president before him. I'm willing to give him credit for that. Yes, this is an ongoing conversation and we have much more to demand but ffs - this is the first time in my life I feel like we're being heard and fuck it- I'm optimistic about it all for once.

So sign me up for a fucking mug. I want this man to be re-elected.

tabaqui 15th-May-2012 10:05 pm (UTC)
This.
This administration is not perfect but compare to Bush. Compare to a Romney admin, or Santorum, ffs. I wish this would all happen faster, smoother, more easily but at least it's *happening*.

I'm an optimist, too, and i think if/when he gets a second term, we'll see the pace and scope of things quicken and widen.
tabaqui 15th-May-2012 10:06 pm (UTC)
What is that very first item? A sticker? A magnet? It's...weird.

This merchandise is kind of tacky.

As a side note, am I the only one who thinks that it'd be political recklessness for Obama to say anything about what he plans on doing about same sex marriage now, and that he probably has something up his sleeve for his second term? Idk. I just think that him committing to taking it away from the states and doing something would be incredibly foolish, and he's doing it about the smartest way that he can. He needs to get re-elected before he can do anything - if that means he keeps quiet about his plans, I'd rather that than he give the Republicans more ammunition against him.
bnmc2005 16th-May-2012 04:42 am (UTC)
I'm with you on this. He doesn't 'need' to talk about it to win those votes. I think he has a plan or it wouldn't be a conversation at all— but that's my uninformed opinion.

This was a good reminder for me that I was wanting to buy the Made in the USA / birth certificate mug. :D And I went ahead an ordered a T-shirt, too. It'll be nice that I can wear it in public without fear here in California, unlike back in FL where displaying outward liberal expression tended to paint a big target on one.
