The sound of mewsic: Austrians seek creature comforts with its first 'cat cafe'

2:09 pm - 05/19/2012

Austria is taking a leaf out of Japan's book - or should that be a whisker from its cat basket - with the opening of Europe's first 'cat cafe' in Vienna.

Customers at Cafe Neko (which means cat in Japanese) can order a purrfect cup of tea and relax while feline residents Sonja, Thomas, Moritz, Luca and Momo settle on their laps, or pad about underneath the chairs and tables.

Takako Ishimitsu, the cafe’s 47-year-old owner, is originally from Japan where there are now around 40 such establishments in Tokyo alone since the first cat cafe opened in 1998.

Pets are often forbidden in apartments in Japan, and the cafes have proved hugely popular among stressed-out workers and families seeking animal companionship. Some even 'specialise' in particular types or breeds of cat.

Ms Ishimitsu spent three years negotiating with Vienna city officials over hygiene issues before being granted permission to open the establishment.

She explains how she launched the cafe in Europe in order to give people who couldn't have their own pets an opportunity to come into contact with cats. Each of the five animals was rescued from a local animal shelter.

In Japan, however, the authorities have thrown the cat among the pigeons with the introduction of new legislation.

The popularity of cat cafes is being threatened by a new law which prevents the public display of animals after 8pm.

The law was introduced after the Japanese environment agency received more than 155,000 complaints from the public about the treatment of animals in Tokyo's entertainment districts.
Animal welfare campaigners believe that excessive stroking from strangers is causing the animals stress.

Cat cafe managers, who often stay open late to cater for after-work trade, may have to close at their peak trade times as the law comes into force.

As yet, there is no such law enforcement in Austria, but the cafe will always uphold one particular rule.

As it clearly says on the door, there is a strict ‘no dogs’ policy.

hello I love you, I love you, I EAT YOUR HAND!

My cat is a dolt.

He just suddenly goes from enjoying being petted to wanting to wrestle your arm. no warning. ow.

I think we have the same cat, hahaha.

he also won't let you pet him outdoors. He'll start coming over, you bend down to pet him, then ZOOM, he runs away in that silly half puffed, scrunched up cat run. Like he's a cartoon.

He also cheats on us with the neighbors. But he loves us best since he brings us all the dead things.

awww nothing like a pile of dead things to say "i love you best"

i've always wanted cats, but am allergic and my husband uses "at least you won't trip over dead things" as why i should be happy. and i'm always like "but that means they really love you!!"

/I believe I read somewhere that it was because they are trying to teach us to hunt (: Which is both, loving, and condescending, which is awesome.

But my cat used to just eat the things he killed. So we'd find half a squirrel one day, and then the next day, a tail. And maybe a paw.

[Cat I had as a young child though, definitely brought us mice though, one ended up alive, and in my Nan's boot as a child, and she just blocked the entrance to the boot area with a big board.]

I'm allergic, too - i just have to wash my hands a lot and put a bath towel over my pillow/head area on the bed, since that is where *all the cats* and the dog want to sleep when i'm *not*.

Goofy things.

It's worth it to me, but then my allergies aren't life-threatening.

Damn, I love cats. :D

One of my mom's cats is the same. My dad thinks it's because she was abandoned and never learned how to properly be affectionate, so she gets overwhelmed and lashes out-- then freaks out because she realized she just bit/scratched somebody.

See, mine was literally raised by me, since he was a baby (he was born on my bed.) I think he's just a cranky bugger.
froda_baggins 19th-May-2012 08:29 pm (UTC)
Mine does this too, all the time. x_x
evewithanapple 19th-May-2012 08:30 pm (UTC)
Oh man, my cat does the EXACT SAME THING. He'll purr and rub against you and then suddenly sink his claws in and bite really hard. And then he meows at you because you stopped petting him. (It doesn't help that he weighs about twenty pounds.)
keeperofthekeys 19th-May-2012 09:03 pm (UTC)
Mine does this too. Sometimes I won't even be petting her and wham! Kitty attack.
layweed 19th-May-2012 09:24 pm (UTC)
Mine tries to do that. I've learned to anticipate him though, so I usually don't get mangled.

Usually he goes from lying/hugging my arm to licking it and then he goes into full blown bunny kick/bite mode. Idgi.
ion_square 19th-May-2012 11:20 pm (UTC)
it's boxing! he just wants to play probably :) my cat does that too.
layweed 19th-May-2012 11:24 pm (UTC)
Yeah, I know he just wants to play, he doesn't bite maliciously either. The problem is, my skin is nowhere near as thick as a cat's, so I always get bruised/bloodied. :(

I can't wait until I move so I can get a second cat.
ion_square 19th-May-2012 11:29 pm (UTC)
lol same. i always put my sleeve over my arm so his bites don't hurt as much. heh or a glove.
alryssa 20th-May-2012 06:02 am (UTC)
I've had a cat like this before, and I honestly think some cats are just super sensitive to being stimulated in such a way. Like how something can feel nice for a while, but then it will quickly turn into AGH NO GET AWAY.
magus_69 20th-May-2012 09:18 am (UTC)
That reminds me of my baby. Sweet little thing... and then she opens her mouth and--NOM NOM NOM!
