One Million Moms ‘Disturbed’ That JC Penney Is ‘Promoting Sin’ With Gay-Inclusive Ad

7:21 pm - 05/31/2012
Right on cue, the American Family Association’s One Million Moms has expressed outrage at JCPenney’s new Father’s Day advertisement featuring a same-sex couple with their kids. Suggesting the ad is “promoting sin,” OMM attacks the store for “taking sides” instead of remaining “neutral” in the “culture war”:

One Million Moms (OMM) is disturbed that JCPenney’s (JCP) is continuing down the same path of promoting sin in their advertisements. In JCP’s June catalog, there is another homosexual ad, but this time with two dads celebrating Father’s Day. The advertising booklet began arriving in mailboxes yesterday. If their marketing department follows the same plan they did in May, this mailer will be available to view on their website on June 1. [...]

It is obvious that JCP would rather take sides than remain neutral in the culture war. JCP will hear from the other side so they need to hear from us as well. Our persistence will pay off! One day we will answer for our actions or lack of them. We must remain diligent and stand up for Biblical values and truth. Scripture says multiple times that homosexuality is wrong, and God will not tolerate this sinful nature.

OMM previously attempted to boycott JCPenney when the store announced Ellen DeGeneres would be its new spokesperson, but they abandoned that boycott as a failure. There’s nothing to suggest this second effort will be end any differently.

It’s worth noting that OMM’s notion of “neutrality” is complete fiction. Same-sex families are very much a part of our society and our communities. There is nothing neutral about choosing to ignore them. One Million Moms is an anti-gay organization with an anti-gay agenda, and they clearly oppose any business that even dares acknowledge that gay people exist, let alone that they could be welcome customers.

WON'T SOMEONE THINK OF THE STRAIGHT PEOPLE!?

The ad is all kinds of adorbs and I want to shut up and have JCPenny take my money.

I need to get some more clothes from JC Penney.
cuterabbit33 31st-May-2012 11:49 pm (UTC)
I knew this was coming. I wish I could have seen the reactions of all... forty women when they realized JC wasn't taking their side.

I kind of hope JC does a similar ad for 4th of July to rub it in more.
brookiki 1st-Jun-2012 09:25 am (UTC)
I was just saying that JC didn't care about One Million Moms...all five of them.
fuzzycthulhu 31st-May-2012 11:50 pm (UTC)
OMM needs to do us a huge favor and go back to reading "Fifty Shades of Gray" while leaning against the washer on spin cycle in their underwear.

LMAO. A+ comment!

This ad made me flail around in excitement it's so cute. And also decide that I'm giving Penny's my money.

I know it's also part of their marketing and I'm happy about it, but I can't wait for the day when it's not remarkable because some company decided they to feature more LGBT couples and people and more people of different body types and different races.
violetrose 1st-Jun-2012 12:07 am (UTC)
Dear OMM; get a life.

Also, stop calling yourself One Million Moms, when there's only about a few thousand of you. It's false advertisement.

Also, stop calling yourself One Million Moms, when there's only about a few thousand of you. It's false advertisement.

Given the organization is run by a man, they should probably stop calling it 'Moms' too.
squeeful 1st-Jun-2012 12:22 am (UTC)
Hmm, there's something behind that... My sister says the only thing stopping me from a life of supervillainy is the fact that I am short and cute and no one would take me seriously.
beoweasel 1st-Jun-2012 12:26 am (UTC)
They've also been going after DC and Marvel lately, particularly because Marvel is having a gay couple get married, and DC is unveiling that a long time character is gay. (For those curious the big reveal was Alan Scott, the first Green Lantern.)
jettakd 1st-Jun-2012 12:38 am (UTC)
Technically two couples soon enough. Not just Northstar and Kyle, but Hulkling proposed and got engaged to Wiccan in the last issue of Children's Crusade :D
missmurchison 1st-Jun-2012 12:26 am (UTC)
My favorite part is that JC Penney is so tired of hearing from them they've blocked all emails from the OMM server. I don't think it mentions that in the article, but they whine about it in their email. (I've been getting their emails ever since I hijacked one of their forms to thank one of their targets for doing something the 40K Moms found objectionable. Their complaints about TV shows and comics are some of the best unintentional humor I've read in a while.)

I swear companies are including us now just to upset OMM because you can't buy advertising like that

It's like clockwork, every time they start squealing
redstar826 1st-Jun-2012 12:51 am (UTC)
Yeah, I actually got that catalog in the mail today and as soon as I saw that page I went online looking for the inevitable squawking from the bigots.

Change of plans: Going to JCPenney this weekend instead of Old Navy.

Also, I think companies put a lot of value on their Facebook following, so I liked JCPenney's page.
roseofjuly 1st-Jun-2012 02:53 am (UTC)
Yeah, maybe I'll go find my shorts at Penney's instead of Old Navy myself!

ETA: OH shit, $13 jeans! Hell yes!

I wish my Penney's had a good plus size selection. I want to shop there now.
sweetwaterpink 1st-Jun-2012 01:48 am (UTC)
They have a better selection of plus sizes on their website.
checkerdandy 1st-Jun-2012 12:57 am (UTC)
I've never shopped at Penney's but I want to now. I've seen some cute clothes in ads.
baked_goldfish 1st-Jun-2012 01:53 pm (UTC)
If you do, go to the store. Some of their clothes are cute but not the best quality (buttons sewn on very poorly, etc.), while some of them are perfectly fine, and you don't know until you see it in person. If you don't have one near you and still want to support them, I've never had issues with their household goods so you can buy that online without fear?
erunamiryene 1st-Jun-2012 01:13 am (UTC)
Hmmkay, I know where I'm going to look for work pants, then. And I really hope there's a comment card system of some type so I can let them know why I'm shopping there.

First Pals
What makes Dad so cool? He’s the swim coach, tent maker, best friend, bike fixer and hug giver — all rolled into one. Or two.

Good god, I'm getting cavities, this ad is so adorable. This entire advertisement is awesome. :D

Except for the shirt the dad on the right is wearing. >.<
sweetwaterpink 1st-Jun-2012 01:50 am (UTC)
I like the stripe shirt. Stripes are in. :D
sweetwaterpink 1st-Jun-2012 01:58 am (UTC)
Bravo to JCPenney! I love the inclusiveness in their advertisement. Hopefully, more companies will follow their lead.
thelilyqueen 1st-Jun-2012 02:46 am (UTC)
At this point I'm starting to think JCPenney is intentionally trolling NOM, OMM, etc. Or just going 'U Mad? :D'

And I LOVE it.
amyura 1st-Jun-2012 02:26 am (UTC)
Scripture says exactly twice that homosexuality is wrong, and that's if we're being generous. It only says it explicitly once, in the same place where shellfish, bacon, and polyester are condemned. And Saint Paul, the same guy who said women should stay silent (not listening to that, are you, One Million Moms?), made a vague reference to men who were "effeminate," which fundies use to justify their homophobia, but in context is part of a laundry list of sexual practices undertaken by Roman pagans. And we're talking about the same book that says slavery is okay and death by stoning is an appropriate punishment for a variety of offenses.

Personally, I try to stay away from chains in favor of small local businesses, but I think I'm going to have to start buying some stuff at JCP.
bluelarkspur 1st-Jun-2012 03:48 am (UTC)
The hilarious part is that while Jesus didn't comment at all on homosexuality, he had plenty to say about dicks who just sit around judging others. Using their own religious text, I could make a much stronger argument that they're sinning than that gay people are. I really don't think that much of modern Christianity has anything to do with the Jesus or the Bible.
lux_roark 1st-Jun-2012 02:35 am (UTC)
I go to Penney's regularly. I started going more often when Ellen became their spokesperson (and I find her commercials hilarious!).

So much sin in these photos. (Srsly, tho. My ovaries. Ow.)

oh boo hoo straight homophobes. Get a hobby and go shop somewhere else if you're that butthurt over ~sinners~
the_gabih 1st-Jun-2012 11:57 am (UTC)
Suggesting the ad is “promoting sin,”

OH MY GOD THERE ARE GAY PARENTS AROUND WHO LIKE TO CUDDLE THEIR KIDS JUST LIKE STRAIGHT ONES DO

THINK OF THE CHILDREN

THINK OF SODOM and never mind the fact that Sodom's sin was about being rapey douchebags and not being gay
pipsdixiechick 1st-Jun-2012 05:26 pm (UTC)
Thank you!!! And these people aren't exactly ones to be casting virtual stones if they're seeing it that way-they're lying about their own damn organization. Lying is one of the Big Ten.

I love JC Penney, fuck you One Million Moms.
