In the same Delaware church where she was baptized, Ashley Biden, the Vice President's daughter, was married Saturday to Philadelphia surgeon Howard Krein.

The couple were wed at the steepled St. Joseph on the Brandywine Roman Catholic Church, in Greenville, in a ceremony combining the bride's Catholic traditions and the groom's Jewish ones.

Afterward, the newlyweds and some 200 family and close friends headed to the Biden family's lakeside family home in nearby Wilmington for a reception and dinner served family-style in the backyard, which was personally prepped for the big event by the Vice President. In recent weeks, Biden laid fresh sod and his wife, Jill, had planted special fast-growing vines up the latticework around the party tent.

Biden escorted the bride, who wore Vera Wang, down the aisle and had prepared to be emotional about giving away the youngest of his three children.

"I kept telling Ash, we've got to open up the church and practice walking up and down the aisle so I can handle it," the vice president told PEOPLE in the days leading up to the wedding. He reminisced about the only other time he'd seen his daughter in a veil – at her First Communion. "I think to myself, aw, God, my little girl! This can't have passed so quick."

Krein, 45, will surprise his bride Biden, 30, on Saturday night with their honeymoon destination, a family source said. They will make their home in Philadelphia, "just 28 minutes away" from her parents, by the doting Vice President's estimation.

Krein and Biden, a Delaware state social worker who works with troubled children, have been a couple since the summer of 2010, after meeting through Beau Biden, one of her two older brothers. Krein is the son of Bunny Krein, a physician's assistant in cardiology, and Stanley Krein, a retired insurance executive in Cherry Hill, N.J.

Krein proposed last October, at sunset on a cliff in Big Sur, Calif. – but not before getting "Pop's" permission first, said the elder Biden. "This is the right guy," the VP said. "And he's getting a helluva woman."

I hope the photos work since imgur decided to die right when I went to post this and I'm using something I've never used before instead. If they don't work, they're from the two sources so you can see them there instead.

For some reason, I really love that she just threw her hair up in a ponytail for her reception. It looks like they had a great time.

Am I the only one touched that her mom and dad, who could have paid people to do hard work to make their daughter's wedding pretty, instead worked to make it such themselves? The mental image of the vice president laying sod himself for his daughter's big day is just cute.
baked_goldfish 8th-Jun-2012 08:27 pm (UTC)
No, I thought that was charming, too.
thevelvetsun 8th-Jun-2012 10:21 pm (UTC)
It's sweet, but at the same time, that same phrasing could be used if they hired someone to do it. I hear people say "we did such and such" when really they mean they hired someone.
ladypolitik 8th-Jun-2012 11:16 pm (UTC)
I think here it really does convey that her parents set things up themselves. It wouldnt surprise me; they've been known to be srs bsnsss green thumbs for decades.

A-dorbs. I love them, can't help it.

True story, I don't want to get married, yet I have a folder full of wedding dress pictures.
rinygrin 8th-Jun-2012 08:16 pm (UTC)
I'm the opposite. I want to get married but can not see myself wearing a very elaborate/expensive wedding dress. I've always fancied ones that have long sleeves.
sitakhet 8th-Jun-2012 08:21 pm (UTC)
Long sleeves are making a comeback in wedding dresses, especially since Kate Middleton wore her mid-sleeves.

These are my two faves:

Oh man, that is some gorgeous drapery going on all over this comment.
ohloverx 8th-Jun-2012 10:06 pm (UTC)
Oh, God! That second picture is so gorgeous, I can't even!
jwaneeta 8th-Jun-2012 10:42 pm (UTC)
Goooooood. The Vera Wang-inspired sleeveless thing is awfully stale at this point.
girl_fusion 9th-Jun-2012 08:41 am (UTC)
LOOOOOVE that first one. Who is that one by?
nonnycat 9th-Jun-2012 03:27 am (UTC)
Same here. I followed in family tradition and wore a $15 sundress that I have continued to wear on several occasions. While going totally against tradition and wearing black. >_>
etherealtsuki 9th-Jun-2012 02:02 am (UTC)
Haha, I buy wedding magazines simply because it's full of gorgeous fashion.

And that I really want to go into the wedding invitation business.

You and I are the same.

Eeeeeee. The bride and groom look gorgeous and happy. And Joey is always a proud papa.

As I get older and more boring I'm starting to enjoy weddings more. I'm also slowly thinking that the idea of getting married isn't so bad. I'd want to have a big queer Hindu wedding full of my theoretical partner's chosen family and friends and my own, tbqh.

(I may have spent the half hour after posting this comment looking at bridal saris. My high school self would be so disappointed in me.)

Bridal saris are traditionally red or maroon. A lot of women now wear whatever colour they'd like but I've always had an affection for the idea of wearing a red sari. Besides, I look fabulous in red. I think I'd like something like what's in the photo below only with more detail and embroidery on the actual pallu (the length fabric that hangs over your shoulder) and a border that's less thick and ornate. I don't want a silk sari but a more fitting chiffon one with gold embroidery because a) I look better in chiffon saris and b) they're easier to move in/more comfortable. The blouse wouldn't have sleeves that long, or maybe no sleeves at all. I wouldn't mind a halter blouse. And I would somehow find these Wonder Woman heels and wear them because I need to have something geeky. Also, Wonder Woman.

I love those shoes! The sari is nice too, but those shoes are to die for.

Not really crazy about her dress but that vail is beautiful.
ohloverx 8th-Jun-2012 10:09 pm (UTC)
Congrats to them! She looks so beautiful and the both look so happy! Plus, that cake looks so frickin' delicious! I hope she got to sit down and enjoy hers because I didn't get a chance to have a slice of mine at my wedding. Womp womp.

I wonder where her husband took her on her honeymoon. I like that he surprised her!
ladypolitik 8th-Jun-2012 11:22 pm (UTC)
Aw, how nice. :) Ashley is the only child that Joe and Jill had together (her brothers' mother died prematurely 30 years ago); idk why but even though they've never presented themselves as a blended family of "half" siblings and "step" parents, that still struck me as special now that their last born is married.

Sweet. I rather love how much fun they seem to be having, casual and relaxed, not all formal.

I saw this on FB on the Joe Biden page and, yup - the haters were out in full force. Yeesh.
