Who needs Police, Firefighters, or Teachers? The Free Market will protect us!

Romney Says America Doesn’t Need ‘More Firemen, More Policemen, More Teachers’

The last three years are the worst on record for public sector job loss, and the 700,000 government jobs that no longer exist remain a large drag on the American economy.

Today, New Jersey Gov. and Mitt Romney campaign surrogate Chris Christie (R) said that those losses meant the country was moving in “the right direction,” and Romney himself backed that statement up later, criticizing President Obama for calling for the hiring of more teachers, firefighters, and police officers, the Washington Post’s Greg Sargent reports. From CNN’s report of the Romney event:

Romney said of Obama, “he wants another stimulus, he wants to hire more government workers. He says we need more fireman, more policeman, more teachers. Did he not get the message of Wisconsin? The American people did. It’s time for us to cut back on government and help the American people.”

State and local governments have been forced to layoff mass amounts of teachers, firefighters, and police officers because budget crunches have led to school closures and the elimination of public safety departments. That has hurt the unemployment situation (which Romney also criticizes), considering the unemployment rate would be a full point lower without the 700,000 layoffs.

Romney’s honesty isn’t a new position for him or the GOP — he’s called for more government layoffs since the beginning of his campaign. But it’s yet another indication that Romney is more interested in continuing the GOP’s ideological battle against government instead of curing the ills that are plaguing the American economy.

STOP TALKING

"It’s time for us to cut back on government and help the American people"

If by American people, you mean "you and your wealthy chums".
havok_for_god 9th-Jun-2012 02:49 am (UTC)
Yeah, I had forgotten that the American people are in no way helped by teachers, police officers, and fire fighters.
chimbleysweep 8th-Jun-2012 11:50 pm (UTC)
cut back on government and help the American people

Good luck getting that to work.
tiddlywinks103 9th-Jun-2012 12:04 am (UTC)
The American people ARE the government, so how does firing them help? And it's so funny you hate government, yet are gunning for the most governmental government job, EVER. Like you couldn't get more government that, if you tried.

Oh, and you're a bully, homophobe animal abuser. Kindly get fucked, sir, and stop talking, please.
raised_eyebrows 9th-Jun-2012 02:05 am (UTC)
Agreed with all of this. Hiring more government workers means less unemployed Americans.
ladylothwen 9th-Jun-2012 12:06 am (UTC)
What.
sonarafaey 9th-Jun-2012 12:09 am (UTC)
It’s time for us to cut back on government and help the American people

Yes, because I'm sure the 60+ teachers in my area that were recently laid off was really beneficial to the community.
beoweasel 9th-Jun-2012 12:39 am (UTC)
Hey, according to Romney, class sizes don't matter!.
furrygreen 9th-Jun-2012 12:13 am (UTC)
That has hurt the unemployment situation (which Romney also criticizes), considering the unemployment rate would be a full point lower without the 700,000 layoffs.

How. The Fuck. Does laying off MORE PEOPLE help the "unemployment situation"? What. The Fuck. Are you criticizing in this "unemployment situation"? You're calling for MORE fucking layoffs and then you criticize unemployment?

Mittens, I realize you made your fortune by layoffs and destroying companies. I'm going out on a limb to say that the gov'n isn't exactly the same as one of those companies. Cannibalizing its assets while laying off almost everyone to stand back and show that you've made a glimmer of positive change (and, naturally, running far far away before it dies) isn't going to work for you in this venture. You're going to have a whole country of gun nuts after you Mittens. There's only one planet. Until Newt makes that moon-base, you're screwed.
kaymyth 9th-Jun-2012 03:15 am (UTC)
No, see, it "helps" because it makes Obama look bad, and thus gives Mittens a better edge on beating him. The Repubs have pretty much admitted that their one goal in life over the past 3 1/2 years has been to make Obama fail. The more they put the brakes on the economy, the closer they get to their goal.

Ayep. Fuck the American people so that they can get back into power.
umi_mikazuki 9th-Jun-2012 12:14 am (UTC)
This future teacher would like Romney to fuck off and die.

emeraldus 9th-Jun-2012 12:29 am (UTC)
Soo, he's saying that the government only hires undocumented workers who aren't citizens?
roseofjuly 9th-Jun-2012 12:44 am (UTC)
They'd still be American people, though. And they still pay taxes, contrary to what a lot of Republicans believe.
doverz 9th-Jun-2012 12:36 am (UTC)
Okay Mittens, let's have no one to put out fires and save people stuck in fires or people that help make sure things are less dangerous (debatable obviously with all the police fuckery) and see how awesome everyone is.
beoweasel 9th-Jun-2012 12:44 am (UTC)
I think police brutality would go down, if you had more police on the street, rather than less. Think about it, they work a thankless job for long hours with shit pay in a high-stress environment. If you had more officers to carry the work load, you'd have a lot less stress and problems, and less instants of police losing their shit and taking it out on some poor kid.
effervescent 9th-Jun-2012 12:47 am (UTC)
Is it sad that I wonder if a lot of Americans would agree with him? :/ It feels like a lot of people want more jobs but not ~government~ jobs, or something. Idk.
romp 9th-Jun-2012 05:39 am (UTC)
Yeah, there's some sort of legend about Government Workers who goof around all day and make a huge salary. I've never seen it myself.
layweed 9th-Jun-2012 12:52 am (UTC)
We should just privatize fire departments! Y'know, like in the movie "Gangs of New York", where they had fire fighting gangs! And they totally show up and FIGHT! EACH OTHER!

orrrrrrrrrr not.
beoweasel 9th-Jun-2012 01:14 am (UTC)
Yeah! And then, instead of paying taxes, you could buy contracts from different, competing corporations, who, in no way will ever abuse that kind of power.
mollywobbles867 9th-Jun-2012 01:00 am (UTC)
Who exactly does he think the American people are? It's not like those careers are where the money is or anything. Teaching is the most thankless job on the planet, ffs.
one_hoopy_frood 9th-Jun-2012 01:13 am (UTC)
I can no longer articulate any feelings I have about Conservatives. Like I read the words and I get upset, but I've completely exhausted my words. LOL WHO NEEDS FIREFIGHTERS AMIRITE. How the actual fuck do you reach that conclusion? And how do ordinary people cheer that on? So much fucking ignorance.

I can't even begin to start with teaching because every attack on teachers is just like watching my dreams go down the drain.
darth_eldritch 9th-Jun-2012 01:15 am (UTC)
I think they've lost their minds.

He just fried my logic subroutine. My positronic brain is now caught in an endless loop trying to make sense of the contradictions and is on the verge of a meltdown.

Go lock yourself in the bathroom and beat off, you flip-flopping, job eliminating freak. Or go fire someone in your campaign for fun, since you LOVE firing people. Shoo now.
lilyginny27 9th-Jun-2012 01:30 am (UTC)
Karma needs to hurry up and kick this asshole in the ass.
masakochan 9th-Jun-2012 06:38 pm (UTC)
And if not karma- I always liked the thought of people like Mitt Romney and Scott Walker getting to the pearly gates, and St. Peter being "Hold on, we got a hell'uva' file on you." when they they try and claim they were a decent person during life.
ahzuri 9th-Jun-2012 01:38 am (UTC)
Whelp at least my teaching degree will keep my own children from being morons who can't read write or do arithmetic. Though I guess the US might burn down or be overrun by thugs in the meantime.
tilmon 9th-Jun-2012 02:00 am (UTC)
Any city he appears in should refuse to dispatch extra police. He obviously thinks that, because he is surrounded by an excess of security forces, that everyone can see a uniformed officer within 50 feet and assume that there are two plainclothes officers within 10.

And no fire trucks waiting outside his venues, either. Definitly no EMS on hand.

Fuck him.
romp 9th-Jun-2012 05:42 am (UTC)
Good point. Republicans should refuse those services!
nicosian 9th-Jun-2012 02:02 am (UTC)
Sooo laying off fire and police...How's that work when his house is burned or broken into? Oh, wait, he's rich enough to afford private services if he had to.

And teachers? Really? How's that going to help the next generation with innovation and thinking and brain things? Oh. wait. You and your cronies offshored the work and every other nation's going to do the intellectual heavy lifting,...unless you're rich and can afford private tutors.

Combine it with Santorum's "edumacation is elitist!" and well, we can plainly see that Mitten's vision of america clearly is whatever suits him and his cronies best, fuck the rest of the masses.

Ugh. fuckery man.
baked_goldfish 9th-Jun-2012 02:06 am (UTC)
Mittens, you are the dumbest person ever to run for this office, even dumber than W. because I'm pretty sure he wouldn't stand up there and talk about not wanting to pay for firefighters, and I am terrified of what would happen if you got elected.
darth_eldritch 9th-Jun-2012 02:44 am (UTC)
OMG, someone who makes W look good. Who would have known?
lux_roark 9th-Jun-2012 02:07 am (UTC)
My son's school has trouble passing the mandated state tests and the classrooms are already overcrowded. If they laid off teachers it would make the situation worse.
babysinclair 9th-Jun-2012 02:10 am (UTC)
The logic fail made my brain hurt
babysinclair 9th-Jun-2012 02:13 am (UTC)
No teacher no cops no firemen

So as the uneducated (lbr its going there) plunge into a choatic world where their parents couldnt afford a tutor~~~ and all hell breaks loose there will be no cops or firemen? like what

this makes no sense

tvisgood 9th-Jun-2012 02:24 am (UTC)
Holy shit is that a stupid thing to say.

You're a moron, Mittens.
heartbreakangel 9th-Jun-2012 02:29 am (UTC)
At this point, I doubt Romney can even keep track of what his stance is on anything, given he's been for it before he was against it with so much stuff. He's also clearly falling back on his methods of handling things from Bain, which was, from what I recall, something he tried when he was governor of Massachusetts. Didn't work out so hot with keeping unemployment down, and screwed the pooch with the state budget.

This guy's a train wreck.
checkerdandy 9th-Jun-2012 02:30 am (UTC)
And a hearty fuck you too from this public microbiologist.
