Romney Says America Doesn’t Need ‘More Firemen, More Policemen, More Teachers’
The last three years are the worst on record for public sector job loss, and the 700,000 government jobs that no longer exist remain a large drag on the American economy.
Today, New Jersey Gov. and Mitt Romney campaign surrogate Chris Christie (R) said that those losses meant the country was moving in “the right direction,” and Romney himself backed that statement up later, criticizing President Obama for calling for the hiring of more teachers, firefighters, and police officers, the Washington Post’s Greg Sargent reports. From CNN’s report of the Romney event:
Romney said of Obama, “he wants another stimulus, he wants to hire more government workers. He says we need more fireman, more policeman, more teachers. Did he not get the message of Wisconsin? The American people did. It’s time for us to cut back on government and help the American people.”
State and local governments have been forced to layoff mass amounts of teachers, firefighters, and police officers because budget crunches have led to school closures and the elimination of public safety departments. That has hurt the unemployment situation (which Romney also criticizes), considering the unemployment rate would be a full point lower without the 700,000 layoffs.
Romney’s honesty isn’t a new position for him or the GOP — he’s called for more government layoffs since the beginning of his campaign. But it’s yet another indication that Romney is more interested in continuing the GOP’s ideological battle against government instead of curing the ills that are plaguing the American economy.

I can't.
You won't need police because the plan is to extend Stand Your Ground laws to ALL 50 states. So you'll have vigilantes walking around armed to the hilt, maintaining their own version of law and order, so no need for police!
Teachers will be considered useless because the only education our children need will come from church and Bible study. No more of that pesky theory of evolution getting in the way of proper creationism!
And firefighters, well if your house burns down you were obviously a dipshit Democrat in the first place and besides that fire will be handy for getting rid of gays and lesbians and any other minorities you don't like or approve of.

Seriously though, I'm actually hoping that is a far-fetched scenario. Still can't explain the logic of creating jobs by firing people.

Cue campaign commercial featuring footage of how New Yorkers lined the streets/bridges to give water and show gratitude to first responders covered in ash as they came and went. "You were grateful to have them then. Why aren't you now?" or something more eloquent than I can come up with at near 2am.
Of course, why would they care? I mean, congress has healthcare and they are the only ones who matter (the fact that insider trading is legal for members of congress just says it all on the subject of fairness.) Those lazy slackers should get jobs. Hu-rah!
dems have never missed an opportunity to miss an opportunity lately. it's depressing.
My husband is a teacher and you want to know what his life looks like? He is the only science teacher at his school that ranges from 6th to 12th grade! He has to fit in SEVEN classes into a FOUR block schedule, but really within only THREE blocks because he needs ONE for his planning which he has to take in the office because he has to share his fucking classroom with multiple teachers. He tutors THREE days a week after school. He teaches TWO homebound students FIVE days a week after all of that! He's the head of student council and the video game club! He is the teacher representative for his school AND he works on the county's scheduling committee that figures out the schedule for each school year.
He works at an alternative school with children who have criminal records, and deals with gang members on a daily basis! He's been assaulted at school by students and threatened with gang hits when students get angry. And yet he STILL found a way to have the best test scores in the whole fucking school this year! He hasn't had a SINGLE raise since he was hired, and so he's doing all of this for less than THIRTY THOUSAND DOLLARS a year after taxes!
SO TELL ME YOU FUCKING FUCKER IF YOU COULD DO HIS JOB BECAUSE IT IS APPARENTLY SO USELESS AND UNIMPORTANT! SEE IF YOU COULD LAST A FUCKING DAY DOING WHAT MY HUSBAND DOES YOU SMUG FUCKING BASTARD! I'D LOVE YOU TO COME AND SAY TO HIS FACE THAT HE DESERVES TO BE LAID OFF!
I seriously need to leave this post before I have a full on breakdown over this shit. I can NOT with this right now! I'm literally sobbing right now!

hey Romney
rage!exhaustion*
Youuuuuu bastard.
Uh, no. The message of Wisconsin was not that we need fewer teachers, police, firefighters, etc. It was about public sector unions, which is a different debate, IMO.
Also, the fact that some percentage of voters in Wisconsin may have agreed with Governor Walker's stance on public unions has no impact on how the rest of the country feels about it, so I don't see where Romney gets off telling "the American people" how they ought to feel about this issue.
