Romney Says America Doesn’t Need ‘More Firemen, More Policemen, More Teachers’

The last three years are the worst on record for public sector job loss, and the 700,000 government jobs that no longer exist remain a large drag on the American economy.

Today, New Jersey Gov. and Mitt Romney campaign surrogate Chris Christie (R) said that those losses meant the country was moving in “the right direction,” and Romney himself backed that statement up later, criticizing President Obama for calling for the hiring of more teachers, firefighters, and police officers, the Washington Post’s Greg Sargent reports. From CNN’s report of the Romney event:

Romney said of Obama, “he wants another stimulus, he wants to hire more government workers. He says we need more fireman, more policeman, more teachers. Did he not get the message of Wisconsin? The American people did. It’s time for us to cut back on government and help the American people.”

State and local governments have been forced to layoff mass amounts of teachers, firefighters, and police officers because budget crunches have led to school closures and the elimination of public safety departments. That has hurt the unemployment situation (which Romney also criticizes), considering the unemployment rate would be a full point lower without the 700,000 layoffs.

Romney’s honesty isn’t a new position for him or the GOP — he’s called for more government layoffs since the beginning of his campaign. But it’s yet another indication that Romney is more interested in continuing the GOP’s ideological battle against government instead of curing the ills that are plaguing the American economy.

I can no longer articulate any feelings I have about Conservatives. Like I read the words and I get upset, but I've completely exhausted my words. LOL WHO NEEDS FIREFIGHTERS AMIRITE. How the actual fuck do you reach that conclusion? And how do ordinary people cheer that on? So much fucking ignorance.

I can't even begin to start with teaching because every attack on teachers is just like watching my dreams go down the drain.

I think they've lost their minds.

I feel you, I'm studying to become a Elementary school teacher. My brain is over here "You should totally jump ship now, this is going no where you won't even be able to get hired" and I'm just telling it to STFU because goddamnit someones gotta teach the kids even if I have to do it out of my home because apparently they don't do any of that teaching stuff in schools now.

I heard a story at work today about how one of my bosses was sort of playfully quizzing a graduating senior that she knew and asked her to name 8 presidents, she named fucking Hilter HITLER. My was full of wtf and how the hell did they graduate, I couldn't even articulate my feelings over this to her.

I have an elementary education degree.

I work at a bank. Thankfully it's not one of the Truly Evil Banks (tm), and I do kick ass at my job, but it's sure as hell not what I was trained to do.

Video: High School Kids Are Dumb

"Name a country that starts with the letter U."
"Europe?"
"Utopia?"

These people can either vote or will be able to vote within 5 years. This is how politicians like Scott Walker win. :(

....I just lost any sort of faith I had in the education systems. I mean I had little to begin with but goddamn.

This!! This is EXACTLY what Conservatives want - an uneducated public so they can get away with fraud, murder, etc. Sadly, we're well on our way!

God, honestly. My aunt and my cousin are both Master's Degree educators (er, they both got their Master's in Education specifically so that they could be teachers).

Guess what? They're both out of work. Fucking pisses me off so much.

And people can't seem to understand why I'm not eager to accrue tens of thousands of dollars in debt to get a Master's degree in education when I know so many people with them still working retail right alongside me with my BA. It's bullshit.

Not that it makes a damn bit of difference, but they're both Ivy League grads, so you'd think schools would be jumping all over themselves to get at them.

Nope.

Unbelievable. I'm going for my certification to be a paralegal since at least the law sector seems to be doing okay.

You don't need a masters to start teaching. Just a BA, passing the licensure exams, and some sort of 15-credit or alternative training program. You need a master's to KEEP teaching, but you're given some sort of time frame to complete it. You have a slightly better chance of being hired if money is an issue for the district, because non-Masters teachers are cheaper, and then you can finish your masters while working, while you have an income and course reimbursement from your workplace.
