Finally, a Satire Film About Being a Black Face in a White Place is in the Works

1:25 am - 06/14/2012
“Dear White People” is a satire about being a black face in a white place. The film has an impressive list of people ready to help make it happen, all they need is funding.

The filmmakers have started an Indiegogo fundraiser to raise $25,000 in the month. Below is a bit more information about the project via Indiegogo:

Remember when Black movies didn’t neccesarily star a dude in a fat suit and a wig? Or have major plot twists timed to Gospel numbers for no apparent reason? No? Damn…

Well believe it or not there was a time when “Black Art-House” was a thing. When movies like Do The Right Thing, Hollywood Shuffle, and Boyz In Da Hood were breaking box office records as well as making us laugh, cry, and think in ways movies hadn’t before.

The humble producers of DEAR WHITE PEOPLE, a satire about being a black face in a white place, long to bring those days back. But we can’t do it without you!

Here’s the deal…we’re looking to raise seed money that will go a tremondously long way in securing the capital we’ll need to produce our million dollar indie feature. With our trailer, script and your help, we believe we can bring this exciting piece of cinema to life! Join us, won’t you?

The filmmakers say “Dear White People” follows the stories of four black students at an Ivy League college where a riot breaks out over a popular “African American” themed party thrown by white students. With tongue planted firmly in cheek, the film will explore racial identity in “post-racial” America while weaving a universal story of forging one’s unique path in the world.

Something else I can't wait to give my money to. Also, you probably don't want to look at the youtube comments.

BTW I just showed this video to a friend who doesn't understand Sam's line "Black People can't be racist". Anyone know any good online blogs or articles about the issue I can share with her. I know that because of power dynamics and institutional issues, many minorities can't really harm or BE racist towards white people. However I don't know how to properly articulate it with her.

idk of any blogs, but i mentioned that line in the Mothership post about this the other day, and how people were going to latch onto it. Is that covered in Sociology courses at all? tbh, and this is embarassing to admit as a college grad, ONTD race posts were where I finally understood-oh! White privilege, reverse racism CAN'T exist, etc...i googled "Reverse racism doesn't exist" and a bunch of blog links popped up, but I can't get to them from work (most blogs other than LJ are blocked :( ) I'd just recommend perusing through that

The way it was explained to me in a Sociology of Inequality class:

Prejudices are negative thoughts that a person holds about a particular group. So black people can be prejudiced against white people or some other race.

But racism is a widespread systematic phenomena where groups are systematically oppressed on a huge societal level. Oppressed groups can't really contribute to that phenomena, because they don't have societal power like the privileged groups have.

Thanks! This has helped A LOT. She understands what I mean now. I think the problem is that racism isn't properly defined to people as systemic and institutional. It needs to be taught early on as that. :D

racism =/= oppression
The idea that blacks "can't" be racist is absurd.

So you're expressing the opposite of everyone here and saying that racism ISN'T "..the a widespread systematic phenomena where groups are systematically oppressed on a huge societal level."

People here are defining racial prejudice and racism differently.

A person can be bigoted without having the power or opportunity to act on their beliefs.
Look at the Black Muslim teaching that whites are Satanic, or black anti-Semitism for example.
OTOH, a person might discriminate for other reasons than personal prejudice. For instance, it might be an important business decision to cater to a community by not dealing with $those_people.

You clearly don't know the real world from your fantasies.
Get followed down the street by a black woman screaming the lord's prayer at you because you are a Jew and get back to me.
