More info about the show in this post

In Episode 3, Dumb, Drunk & Racist heads to Melbourne. After seeing the promotion for the series, one of the locals they meet (the one who yells out White Pride...) has written an apology for his behaviour. Here follows his apology.

To whom it may concern

On the way home from a night out I walked past a group of people with a camera crew who I thought, at that particular time, to be the provocative Indian comedy duo "Fear of a Brown Planet". My comments were aimed at this comedy group solely, not the people who I have recently found out were Indian tourists from overseas.

At the time I had had a disagreement with my fiancé and was not in a good frame of mind and had been out having a few drinks watching a band. I said some ridiculous things which I would not normally say. I live and work in a very multi-cultural area and associate with many cultures including Indians. This incident has strained relationships between myself and my family. I do sincerely apologise for what I said and the way I acted which is very out of character.

I apologise to the Indian tourists and want them to know I had no idea it was a documentary on racism and acted out of my dislike for the comedy group. I am extremely worried and stressed how I come across in the program. I am very embarrassed about my actions on this evening and am remorseful of any hurt I have caused.

Thankyou.

For those who are interested the first 3 episodes are on youtube...although TRIGGER WARNING some episodes do show real footage of racism violence...of course many white Australians on twitter and other sites are offended this show even exists but it's really good to hear from the minorities living in Australia and are able to tell their stories as horrific as they are

Nope, I spend most of my time between Sydney and Melbourne depending on work.

I sorry you feel so bad for mouthing off at racists. You must feel sooooooooo terrible.
clarrisani 11th-Jul-2012 12:24 am (UTC)
I didn't feel bad about mouthing off at racist, I felt bad about how much I over-reacted and some of the vicious things I said about the racist.

Given you view racism as "oppression", exactly how have you been oppressed?
sharz 11th-Jul-2012 12:28 am (UTC)
You mean aside from being physically and verbally harassed, threatened with rape, had our house vandalized for being the only non-white person on our street at worst and getting racist and ignorant comments at my place of work at best?
clarrisani 11th-Jul-2012 01:19 am (UTC)
Hey, I've been physically and verbally harassed (and assaulted to the point of ending up in the ER), threatened with rape, my property stolen/damaged, my car damaged in a car park, and my house vandalised simply because I'm Caucasian in a predominately Middle-Eastern suburb. Also, I teach at a predominately Middle-Eastern high school. You're not "special". It all comes down to where you live.

And if you are getting racist and ignorant comments at your place at work, do what you're supposed to do - go to the authorities and report them for harassment. There are laws against it for a reason. If you're simply letting it happen, you're giving the people the "ok" to keep doing it.

Sure, tell victims how to manage their behavior. It won't have any career limiting moves for me at all right? Conversely- why the heck don't you move suburbs? Pot/kettle anyone?

Sorry but racism against white people can not exist. You are the majority- there is no such thing as oppression against the majority.

Conversely- since you love telling people what do to do. Why don't you move to another suburb then? You clearly must be OK with it.

You seem to not grasp the concept of where this treatment and distrust of white people comes from. It came from the fact that white people were racist towards people of colour first. But not, we have to put up with white people like you whinging about how you are the victims of racism.

And stop referring to them as Middle Eastern- do you have any idea how diverse the "Middle East" is?

Maybe if you weren't too busy trying to protest how oppressed you were, you'd educate yourself.
clarrisani 11th-Jul-2012 02:06 am (UTC)
Did I tell the victim to manage their behaviour? No. But raising awareness of the issue is what it takes to change it. If you have to choose between racism and moving up and your career, vs standing up for yourself and limiting your career, then your industry has MAJOR issues that someone needs to blow the whistle on.

Thank you for proving your racism against Caucasian people. I'm sure the Caucasians in South Africa agree with you as their houses are burnt, their women raped, and they are brutally murdered. Racism exists ACROSS THE BOARD. Every single group has racist factions in it, and every single group has racist behaviour displayed against them.

You keep claiming Australians are all racist. Do you realise how diverse Australians are? Want me to be specific? The Lebanese. Not all of them are racist - some are very lovely and open-minded - but when you get a large group of them in one particular area you have issues. Same think has happened with the Turks. In fact, in the suburb down there are a few corrupt police officers that won't respond unless you are Turkish.

I'm not protesting about how oppressed I am, I'm simply pointing out that racism is diverse even as you protest about how oppressed YOU are. You're not special. Everyone suffers racism at some stage. In Australia most Caucasians don't suffer it as much as most other groups, but it does exist despite how much you want to deny it.

Educate yourself. Racism isn't race exclusive. Denying it is the major part of the problem.

Again with you and the white people are oppressed argument and your obliviousness to racial tensions vs racism.

Not to mention your inability to read/ comprehend despite being an English major. Terrible.

Not to mention the incredible condescending way you keep saying "lovely". Jesus Christ. You need to take a look at how you're coming across.

Twisting my words won't make you right.
clarrisani 11th-Jul-2012 02:39 am (UTC)
1) Changing your opinion on racial tension vs racism again.

2) YOU need to look at how you're coming across, which is racist against Caucasian people.

3) "Twisting my words won't make you right." pot, meet kettle.

4) One of my good friends is Lebanese and she IS lovely. How is it condescending to say someone is lovely? I don't distinguish between race when calling people "lovely". My mother is lovely. So are many of my friends of various races, religions, and sexual orientation. You might want to check the dictionary for the meaning of the word "lovely".

And here we have the "my friends are X so I can't be racist" argument.

I should set up a bingo card for you.
clarrisani 11th-Jul-2012 03:01 am (UTC)
Twisting words again, are we? I simply said that the word "lovely" isn't condescending, and you play the old racism card. You're doing well. Want a trophy?
sharz 11th-Jul-2012 03:02 am (UTC)
Racism "card". Really need that bingo match.
clarrisani 11th-Jul-2012 03:06 am (UTC)
I think I won that bingo match just reading your posts. You just won't accept you're part of the problem, will you? You're in denial, play the victim, refuse to accept that other can be the victim, that you're racist, and refuse to do anything about the racism in the country but would rather sit on your hands and say "woe is me".
sharz 12th-Jul-2012 10:40 am (UTC)
PoC can't be racist. We have no power to oppress white people. How thick are you? We face consequence detrimental to our careers and families for calling out racism- even more than a white person like you.

You are in denial about your own privilege and you should be ashamed and embarrassed for yourself.
