Aurora, CO shooter purchased guns legallly

9:34 pm - 07/20/2012
More information about the firearms used in the deadly shooting in Aurora, Colo. during the midnight "Dark Knight Rises" screening has come to light. A law enforcement source close to the investigation told CBS News that all the guns were purchased within the last six months, which is considered a "short time to the crime."

The guns were all purchased legally between May 22 and July 6 at three Colorado gun stores.

[The suspect] purchased a Smith and Wesson .233 high powered semi-automatic rifle at Gander Mountain gun store in Thornton, Colo, according to the law enforcement source. He also bought a .40 caliber Glock pistol at Gander Mountain gun store in Aurora, Colo. Another .40 caliber Glock handgun and a Remington 870 shotgun were purchased at Bass Pro Shops in Denver, Colo.

Wearing full body armor and wearing a gas mask, [the suspect] allegedly entered the Century 16 theater through a fire exit and threw two gas canisters into the audience. He then opened fire on the audience, hitting 79 people. At least 12 are dead and 59 more are wounded. The semi-automatic rifle, shotgun and one of the pistols was used during the massacre.

Bass Pro Shops offered their "deepest sympathies" to the victims and their families in a statement to CBS News.

"This is an unspeakable tragedy, and we join with all Americans in offering our prayerful support," Larry Whiteley, Manager of Bass Pro Shops Communications, at Springfield, Mo. corp. headquarters, said.

"Based on the records we have reviewed, personnel in our Denver store correctly and fully followed all federal requirements with respect to the sale of one shotgun and one handgun to the individual identified in this incident. Background checks, as required by federal law, were properly conducted, and he was approved. Again, our hearts go out to the victims and their families. We also offer our support and appreciation to the law enforcement and emergency response professionals and all others who responded to give aid to these innocent victims."

The other chain store, Gander Mountain, also offered their condolences.

"Gander Mountain fully cooperates with law enforcement in criminal investigations like the one regarding the tragic events in Colorado," Jess Myers, media and public relations specialist, told CBS News in a statement. "We operate in strict compliance with all local, state, and federal laws regarding firearms ownership and are fully cooperating with this on-going investigation. As long-time business owners in Aurora, this community is our home and the home to many of our associates and customers. We send our thoughts and prayers out to those affected. In respect for the victims of this tragic crime and their families, we will have no further comment in this matter."

Federal law requires licensed firearm dealers to alert authorities of repeat gun purchases only when a buyer purchases two handguns from the same dealer within five days. Other multiple gun purchases do not require notification of law enforcement.

Aurora police chief Daniel Oates had previously confirmed that [the suspect] was found with an AR-15 assault rifle, Remington 860 shotgun and .40 caliber Glock handgun. A second .40 caliber handgun was found in his car.

(Top to bottom, clockwise) A Remington 870 shotgun, Smith & Wesson model M&P15T rifle and a Glock 22 handgun, which are reportedly the models of guns [the suspect] purchased.

79 people... earlier today some people were speculating that 50 had been a high estimate. And the Aurora police chief just said on the press conference that the shooter had also bought 6000 rounds of ammunition online. I don't even want to contemplate how much worse this could have turned out :(

I was thinking this too.

This, ffs. Can we go 24 hours before people use a national tragedy as an excuse to wank? (The internet's answer is that no, I lost that bet 23 hours ago. But still.)

Perhaps you can tell me: what'd the difference between something like this sparking discussion of gun control and wank?
wonderpup 21st-Jul-2012 08:03 am (UTC)
In my mind it turns into wank when it is just a talking point vs a talking point without anything substantive. "guns don't kill people, people kill people" "
evilgmbethy 21st-Jul-2012 09:57 am (UTC)
yeah, I hate when people act like now is not the time to have this conversation. It happens every time some nut decides to shoot a bunch of people, there's a whole lot of NOW IS NOT THE TIME. When the fuck IS the time? It's code for, "we don't want to talk about this now when people might actually take issue with our desire to own all the guns"
rebness 21st-Jul-2012 10:12 am (UTC)
Exactly. It's a great way to stifle the argument.
thecityofdis 21st-Jul-2012 02:29 pm (UTC)
Except that plenty of people on both sides (myself included) think it's wildly inappropriate.

These people are not even buried. I don't care about anyone's thoughts on gun control when victims are still in the hospital, and I think it's really indecent of people to try and spin stories like this for their purposes IMMEDIATELY.

And yes, it happens every time. I just think it's common decency to allow people to mourn for a Manhattan minute before we reignite a national debate that everybody has wanky thoughts on that we can have literally every other minute of every day to discuss.

There's no way it comes across to me as not exploitative, sorry.

But EVERY time something happens like this, we say, "now is not the time" and then once the news cycle passes, no one cares anymore. It's the nature of our news media. Putting it off when it's actually relevant and in people's minds just means nothing ever changes.

You're talking about news shows on TV and radio *and* discussions on forums and in person? I think those are very different things. And frightened people are going to react and, frankly, get pissed that they have to send their kids into a place where this happens regularly. I think that discussion--about our culture and what we can do about it--just makes sense.
rjdaae 21st-Jul-2012 05:46 pm (UTC)
Seriously! Personally, I think it's disrespectful to the victims to not be making every effort to prevent something like this from happening even again.

What's the difference between wank and different opinions? The level of passion? I wonder this every time someone predicts wank.
mors_amor 21st-Jul-2012 01:37 pm (UTC)
I always feel like people use "wank" when simply they don't want to talk about it.
romp 21st-Jul-2012 05:46 pm (UTC)
I see. Well, I'd expect more here but of course some people are all about their positions, regardless of topics.

Most of the reactions I'm hearing are from parents who are freaked because there's one more place their kids may be killed....and I wouldn't dismiss any of that as wank. And I'm hearing good discussions about why people with concealed weapons are NOT stopping shooters in cases like this (and Gifford and that military base in Texas...) and, if people aren't trained or are and can't safely fire back, why do we allow concealed weapons? I think all that kind of discussion is a good thing.
mors_amor 21st-Jul-2012 01:40 pm (UTC)
You call it wank other call it discussion and this is exactly the time to have those discussions.
rebness 21st-Jul-2012 04:37 pm (UTC)
Yeah. Discussion about gun control is not hurtful and unproductive. It's valid and necessary, whatever the outcome.
bestdaywelived 21st-Jul-2012 04:24 pm (UTC)
It's not wank, it's a legitimate concern.
romp 21st-Jul-2012 05:55 pm (UTC)
I think it's the fact that this one of of the first comments. I think the anticipation of wank is problematic because it's fairly silencing. I understand you're talking only about dogmatic yelling, not discussion but it's a bit chilling when many people haven't yet shared their thoughts.
bestdaywelived 21st-Jul-2012 06:50 pm (UTC)
That's exactly how it is here, though. This comment was left in an effort to silence any of us who have a very real and legitimate concern about the guns in the US.
