General Mills Anti-Gay Protest Goes Awry As Man Lights Lawn On Fire

5:51 pm - 08/06/2012
Video footage of a gay rights opponent's protest gone awry is going viral in the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) blogosphere.

Originally reported by Good as You blogger Jeremy Hooper, the clip shows an unidentified man attempting to light a box of Cheerios cereal on fire in protest of General Mills' proclaimed pro-marriage equality stance.

"One out of every eight boxes of cereal in this country is Cheerios," the man states. "This is really the treat now for the homosexuals! And this is our protest of General Mills, because they're advocating same-sex marriages. So we are gonna torch some cereal!"

Things don't go exactly according to plan, however, as the fire quickly spreads to the lawn below as the man struggles to extinguish it.

Meanwhile, the National Organization For Marriage (NOM) recently launched a "Dump General Mills" campaign. "Your decision to pander to same-sex marriage activists has forced me to choose between your food products and my conscience," a petition, which has so far drawn over 24,000 signatures, states. "As long as food is produced by other companies my conscience is going to win out over the desire for another bowl of Lucky Charms."

I would honestly think lighting a fire (even if contained) in front of a business or building of any kind would be illegal. This guy should have been arrested on these grounds.

Speaking of that whole 'who decides which opinions are valid' thing. When you make bullshit arguments like this that are easily refuted with a quick google search, that makes your opinions look not all that valid. Just saying.

PS-you can read the city's argument here http://phoenix.gov/news/071212salmanfacts.html

Agreed. There are two sides to every story. And in light of eternity, none of us gets to be the ultimate judge of whose opionion is valid.

LOL this sounds like you trying to weasel your way out of the fact that you made a poorly reasoned argument based on something you didn't research all that well.

This isn't an argument about favorite ice cream flavors or something like that which is truly subjective. In this case we are capable of weighing the evidence and deciding which side makes the more compelling case.

Well, as the old proverbs says, "Each side sounds right until you hear the other side."

Ultimately, human reasoning will fail all of us. I dare not trust my soul to my own logic, but must wholly lean on the wisdom of the One who created my mind.

That is not an old proverb. That's you talking. You're the only one I can find who's even said it online!

I would really love to take credit for this one, but I can't. The complete proverb goes like this...

"The first to plead his case seems right, Until another comes and examines him." Proverbs 18:17

That's not a "complete" proverb. That's a paraphrased proverb. There is a difference between being part of something and being a paraphrase something.

Personally though, I find some other verses of Proverbs 18 more interesting:
"Unfriendly people look out for themselves; they bicker with sensible people." - Proverbs 18:1
"Fools find no pleasure in understanding, but only in expressing their opinion." - Proverbs 18:2
"When the wicked arrive, so does contempt; with shame comes insult." - Proverbs 18:3
"Favoring the wicked isn’t good; it denies justice to the righteous." - Proverbs 18:5
"The lips of fools make accusations; their mouths elicit beatings." - Proverbs 18:6
"The mouth of fools is their ruin; their lips are a trap for their lives." - Proverbs 18:7
"Those who answer before they listen are foolish and disgraceful." - Proverbs 18:13
"An understanding mind gains knowledge; the ear of the wise seeks knowledge." - Proverbs 18:15

Proverbs 18:17 is more appropriately paraphrased as "He who speaks first seems right until questions are asked". Examination in this context is about asking questions not giving another side.

Everyone of those proverbs is excellent. Thank you for sharing them. I most assuredly agree that we would all do well to ponder them and learn what it means to live them out. Again, I thank you, and I appreciate the time you spent finding these.
