St. Paul Teacher Accused Of Discriminating Against Black Students

12:33 pm - 08/08/2012

Heights Community School parents have filed a lawsuit that is now moving to federal courts against the St. Paul Public School District in Minnesota, amid an investigation into allegations that teacher Timothy Olmsted discriminated against black students.

Olmsted resigned after the district placed him on paid leave in the spring after parents complained that he called black students "fat, black and stupid" and told them, "you will never amount to anything" and "you only have one parent," WCCO reported.

The teacher also allegedly forced black students to sit in the back of the classroom, or sit with their desks facing the wall.

"He told the whole entire class that it is easier for him to teach rich white folks than poor black people,"
Tolbert told WCCO.

Olmsted resigned in March, but is still being paid through the first week of October, and parents are dissatisfied. He is also not facing disciplinary action due to the resignation.

In the suit, parents claim that the district failed to protect their children from Olmsted, the Star Tribune reports. Latasha Tolbert, mother of 12-year-old Jamia Ware, said she made nearly 100 calls to school officials in the fall regarding Olmsted's classroom behavior, but the no one acted until January.

District representatives, however, tell the Star Tribune that an investigation was launched promptly and all complaints against the teacher were addressed immediately. Olmsted's attorney notes that the teacher "denies any improper conduct and believes that the claims against him are baseless."

But the educator has a record of controversy. The St. Paul School District reported in 2002 that Olmsted gave a sixth grade girl a birthday card with sexual innuendos, and requested that she read it to the class. He was also accused of giving a graphic description of castrating horses and throwing testicles into a field to feed cats.

For the various incidents over the years, disciplinary actions against him have ranged from written reprimands to days of suspension without pay. Students also find his more recent, racial comments strange.

"He would say random things like when I get out of the shower my dog dries me off," student Aylecia Ingram-Jones told WCCO in a separate report.

Her father, Miguel Jones, has moved the teen to another school district, and asserts that there should be no question about whether Olmsted should be allowed to keep teaching.

"I wouldn't stand for it," Jones said. "Right is right. Wrong is wrong."

Minnesota does not have statewide regulations regarding disciplinary action for teachers, so process is followed based on district decisions and as outlined in teachers' union contracts.

The allegations in St. Paul are similar to complaints against Kathleen Pyles, a math teacher at North End Middle School in Waterbury, Conn., who was placed on paid leave in June while officials investigate claims that she addressed a black student with a racist remark.

Parents have accused Pyles of inappropriately calling a student "black boy" when she couldn't remember his name. When she first called the boy by the wrong name, he pointed out her mistake. So she responded, "How about black boy? Go sit down, black boy."

Parents are calling for her dismissal.

In another incident in March, a Virginia high school English teacher allegedly asked the only black student in the class to read a poem in a "blacker" manner.

Jordan Shumate, a ninth-grader at George C. Marshall High School in Falls Church, Va., says he was reading aloud Langston Hughes' "Ballad of the Landlord" when teacher Marilyn Bart interrupted him.

"She told me, 'Blacker, Jordan -- c'mon, blacker. I thought you were black,'" Shumate told The Washington Post.

What the hell does it take for a school district to investigate a teacher and pull them from a classroom in something resembling a timely manner? What, all these different parents and kids were all just making this shit up? Calling in to complain for the lulz?

This makes me really sad, because I teach for a living. I think in any good classroom there should be some lighthearted joking, but if that's what these teachers were going for, they were way out of line. There's a difference between joking and being offensive.

One thing teachers need is tact and social intelligence. If they can't grasp appropriate ways to interact in the classroom then they are not good teachers, no matter how qualified they may be at teaching in other ways.

Whoa that video is intense. Ridiculous. This guy needs to be fired ASAP.

Augh, one of my friends had to work with this lake of douche. I'm so glad he's finally getting what the fuck he deserves.
aviv_b 8th-Aug-2012 05:21 pm (UTC)
Seriously? Inquiring minds want to know what your friend had to say about him.
girly123 9th-Aug-2012 04:01 am (UTC)
It was a while ago when she told me, and I can't remember a lot of what she had to say specifically due to rage-blackouting like halfway through her infuriating-ass story, but I do remember the specific complaints listed in this article being the ones that she heard from her students and their parents. It was particularly awful because the parents- as well as my friend -confronted the principal about it, and she was just as racist as he was so nothing really changed.

It all seemed so hopeless and disgusting when she was telling me about it, but I'm really glad to see he's getting his racist ass sued.

It breaks my heart that these shitheads are teachers. They give the good ones, who try really hard against mounting opposing forces, a bad name.

That teacher only wanting to teach rich, white kids reminded me of this math teacher I had, Mr. Martin Eckert. He decided that my good grades meant he had to pull me aside, along with my white friend, to tell me no matter how hard I work or how smart I am I will never be as good as a white person. I was shocked when my friend agreed and they stood there humiliating me and arguing with me. Even though I was livid it never occurred to me to tell someone because of how I was raised. I commend these kids for continuing to tell their parents even when it was obvious the district didn't care. And just like this St. Paul teacher my math tracher revealed highly inappropriate information to the class mostly about his son's mental state and some traumatic acts done by his son. That St. Paul teacher telling kids his dog licks him and humiliating the girl turned my stomach. I am willing to bet work isn't the only place where he crosses the line when it comes to kids, and I wish there were a way to find that out.

I just wish kids were the top priority for all school administrators.

Hahaaha, that gif is hilarious!

It was just some totally random shit to knock me down a few pegs. But I was so happy when I nailed the state math exam after that. And that was the same year I was accused of plagiarism because my writing was "too good." Just typical racist ass Long Island teachers.
chaya 9th-Aug-2012 01:29 am (UTC)
That shit is unacceptable. I'm glad you got out of there.
lil_insanity 9th-Aug-2012 01:41 am (UTC)
Ugh, I had the same experience with getting accused of plagiarism because a poem I wrote was "too good." They had no proof that I plagiarized, but I still got in trouble and it was put in my permanent record (barring me from ever getting into honor society, even though I had honor roll every time).
85redberries 9th-Aug-2012 02:49 am (UTC)
Damn. That's even worse! Schools really know how to step on kids' spirits, huh?
lil_insanity 9th-Aug-2012 01:37 pm (UTC)
Yep, gotta crush their souls so they'll be prepared to work in corporate America!
jaded110 26th-Aug-2012 01:19 am (UTC)
Been there too, I was told once again that I didn't understand what I wrote in one of my poems so I must have copied it from somewhere.
jaded110 26th-Aug-2012 01:17 am (UTC)
I was told I couldn't comprehend what I was reading. I was in special education (which SUCKS on Long Island).

My mom looked at my teachers like 'bitch, she's reading on a college fucking level, what the fuck are you talking about?' but they kept insisting I wasn't able to understand the things I read.

School pretty much sucked for me from 2001 through 2005.
85redberries 27th-Aug-2012 05:26 am (UTC)
Ugh. It sucks that your education was like that. My close friends in jr. high and high school were in special ed and I got to see their work and how they were treated and I never felt like teachers did right by them ever. I was reading one of my mom's papers on teachers focusing on where a kid is doing best and struggling and not just assuming they are the best across the board or struggling across the board. I wish this was done more often.

Geez-this dude has some SERIOUS BOUNDARY AND TMI issues.

I'm rather surprised he's still in one piece....

Ugh this is the reason why I get ultra-suspicious and antsy around white teachers and professors. I just expect them to pull this kind of mess tbh.

I remember having a private conference with my white English teacher where she told me I "wasn't like the other ones". The class was 100% black and the school was around 98% black.

I just-
