Papa John’s Founder To Raise Price Of Pizza Due To ‘Obamacare’

12:11 am - 08/09/2012
Papa John’s warns it will have to raise the price of its pizzas due to President Obama’s health care law.

John Schnatter, CEO and founder of Papa John’s, said pizza will cost up to 14 cents more when the Affordable Care Act goes into effect in 2014.

“We’re not supportive of Obamacare, like most businesses in our industry. But our business model and unit economics are about as ideal as you can get for a food company to absorb Obamacare,” Schnatter said in a conference call during last week’s shareholder’s meeting, according to Politico.

Schnatter later added: “If Obamacare is in fact not repealed, we will find tactics to shallow out any Obamacare costs and core strategies to pass that cost onto consumers in order to protect our shareholders best interests,”

According to Pizza Marketplace, there are nearly 4,000 Papa John’s restaurants in all 50 states and 33 countries.

Schnatter, a Romney supporter, held a private fundraiser for the GOP presidential candidate at his Kentucky home in April.

Schnatter later added: “If Obamacare is in fact not repealed, we will find tactics to shallow out any Obamacare costs and core strategies to pass that cost onto consumers in order to protect our shareholders best interests,”

And this is what's wrong with most big companies, perfectly encapsulated in one sentence.
curseangel 9th-Aug-2012 05:41 am (UTC)
Yup. I don't think anyone ever had any illusions that they felt otherwise, but seeing them actually being honest about it is... refreshing, in a way that makes me feel a little sick.
curseangel 9th-Aug-2012 05:40 am (UTC)
In other news, Papa John's pizza still sucks, and nobody actually cares.
new_wave_witch 9th-Aug-2012 05:42 am (UTC)
This reminds me of when Bob Murray laid off an entire coal mine because of Obummer just to make a point. Yeah, way to make HIM look like a dick, bro.
browneyedguuurl 9th-Aug-2012 07:27 am (UTC)
OMG WHAT?!? I hate this world! I hate the awful people like him have more money than they can spend and good, decent people struggle every single day! FUCK THAT BULLSHIT! SMH!

Sorry for the rant. Currently unemployed, broke and can't pay the bills, so I am bitter as fuck.
layweed 9th-Aug-2012 05:43 am (UTC)
Never ordered from Papa Johns, and now it looks like I never will. What a fucking douche.
chimbleysweep 9th-Aug-2012 05:47 am (UTC)
Well, there goes Papa John's for me.

And therefore the end of my time having take-out pizza.

Way to be a douche.
sweetnessarose 9th-Aug-2012 05:49 am (UTC)
"Shareholder's best interest" is key there. Not employees' and customer's best interest, but shareholders'.
thelastpen 9th-Aug-2012 01:37 pm (UTC)
As it was pointed out higher up in the comments, publicly traded companies are legally required to act in the shareholder's best interest if they don't want to get sued by said shareholders. Yes, it sucks, but it's how it is.

“If Obamacare is in fact not repealed, we will find tactics to shallow out any Obamacare costs and core strategies to pass that cost onto consumers in order to protect our shareholders best interests,”

So much for giving a flying fuck for the customers that pay for his sugar-coated pizza. Asshole.

That and I'm sure the employees will take a hit for this too because this asshole will use the excuse off "weeeeeell you have obamacare now so you won't need as many hours" or some dumb shit.
seishin 10th-Aug-2012 02:21 am (UTC)
Sugar coated pizza? What the fuck???
de_berzerk 9th-Aug-2012 05:52 am (UTC)
Excuse my ignorance, but I've seen alot of hate for 'Obamacare'.
What's the big deal here, exactly ?

For years now, I've seen US citizens complaining about their lack of insurance/health care.. and now there is policy in place so there IS insurance/health care.. they don't want it ?
Is this the case or am I misinformed ?
circumambulate 9th-Aug-2012 06:02 am (UTC)
they want it, they just don't want to pay for anyone else to have it.
__planitbremix 9th-Aug-2012 05:57 am (UTC)

Honesty, probably all of them. They just won't be dumb enough to say it.

IT'S THE END OF THE WORLD, OMFG!

Papa John's pizza sucks. And he annoys me so badly on the commercials.
bord_du_rasoir 9th-Aug-2012 06:12 am (UTC)
14¢ is a little over 1% of the price of pizza. That's much less than inflation. In other words, this guy is making a media event over something so negligible that no one'd notice otherwise.

pass that cost onto consumers in order to protect our shareholders

I know business people think this all the time but how many of them are stupid enough to make public statements like this?
moonbladem 9th-Aug-2012 08:36 am (UTC)
... but how many of them are stupid enough to make public statements like this?

A Romney fan?

Schnatter later added: “If Obamacare is in fact not repealed, we will find tactics to shallow out any Obamacare costs and core strategies to pass that cost onto consumers in order to protect our shareholders best interests,”

This, in a nutshell, is why the conservative business model is toxic in the long term. It regards the actual product, the labor force and the customer as no more than a means to an end; this end- profit for shareholders- is the only thing that matters. Keep that up and you end up with an impoverished labor force who can't afford to be customers of a shoddy product because all of the value of the business has been leeched out the top by shareholders and investors.
dravvie 9th-Aug-2012 06:20 am (UTC)
Oh no someone will have to pay more for your cardboardy pizza. Maybe they'll discover something that doesn't taste like greed and assbutts.

jessicamariek 9th-Aug-2012 06:20 am (UTC)
Welp, no more Papa John's for me. Somehow I fail to feel bad about that - I like Papa Murphy's better anyway. :P
kishmet 9th-Aug-2012 06:20 am (UTC)
well smd Schnatter

I'm so glad companies can rise up and punish the middle and lower classes and women for having easier access to health care

a cause truly worth fighting for

I knew he was a right wing dummy for a while, but man, making a big whoop over $0.14? Your small pizza right now costs $11.29 near me. You're talking probably a 1% increase in price.
wikilobbying 9th-Aug-2012 06:28 am (UTC)
your pizza sucks, anyhow, dude. seriously, they have some of the worst goddamn sauce on their pizza, it's so disgusting.
psychesky 9th-Aug-2012 06:48 am (UTC)
14 cents to go toward someones benefits? Sure. Make it 50.

If I actually ordered from there, which I don't, because I live in fucking New York City.
