More Junk Science: GOP Congressman Says Abortion Is Never Necessary To Save A Woman’s Life
By Aviva Shen on Oct 19, 2012 at 9:00 am

On Thursday, after his debate against Demcorat Tammy Duckworth, Rep. Joe Walsh (R-IL) told reporters that an abortion exception is never necessary to save a woman’s life, explaining, “with modern technology and science, you can’t find one instance” of a woman dying from childbirth. Walsh claimed pro-choice advocates simply used the prospect of maternal death “to make us look unreasonable.”

Walsh went on to assert that women whose health would be jeopardized if they carry their fetus to term are simply using the exception as a “tool” to get an abortion for “any reason.”
With modern technology and science, you can’t find one instance…There’s no such exception as life of the mother. And as far as health of the mother, same thing, with advances in science and technology, health of the mother has become a tool for abortions anytime under any reason.

OP: good to know that my life hasn't been cut short due to my pregnancies, and that my classmate really didn't die giving birth.

...no instances of maternal death?
Hasn't the USA got a really high maternal death rate? (or am I out of date?)

The ignorance...it burns!
layweed 19th-Oct-2012 03:49 pm (UTC)
It's fairly high compared to other developed nations, yeah.

ETA: 21 deaths per 100,000 live births, according to the CIA World Factbook.

Someone needs to staple that to his forehead.

Monitor and all.

He is legit FUCK. NUTS.

No really, though, pregnancy is incredibly dangerous. One of the reasons (aside from the obvious one of it not being my body) that I support choice is because I would never ever force a woman to undergo a dangerous, potentially life-threatening biological process if she didn't want to. There are a zillion things that could go wrong during pregnancy and birth that could either disable you for the rest of your life or kill you. Anyone who would force a woman to take her chances even when she doesn't want to is a scumsucking asshole.

Aside from just how wrong that statement is (medical technology has *reduced* the rate of women who die in childbirth, but it hasn't *eliminated* it), there are a lot of other things, aside from childbirth, about pregnancy that can greatly screw up a woman's body/kill a woman.

Then again, considering some of the other crap that's said, I suppose it shouldn't surprise me in the least that a whole group of Republicans seems convinced that science is some kind of hocus pocus magic that the left's invented for nefarious purposes. *sigh*
moonshaz 20th-Oct-2012 06:26 pm (UTC)
But didn't you know? Women's bodies are magic! They can keep us from getting pregnant when we don't want to be. Science? We don't need no stinkin' science!

OT, on topic if you squint and tilt your head: Does anyone else have dreams about being pregnant or being a mom when you're on your period? I had one last night. I was holding my newborn and I was involved with a man and a woman, married them. I don't want kids; I only have these dreams when I'm on or about to start my period.

(Extra weird: Pretty sure the guy was Robert Patinson and the woman was a good friend of mine.)

I had a weird one a couple of nights ago about a toddler that was mine, and now that you mention it, I am on my period. How odd!

Well that's just not true.

... Ectopic pregnancy?
sorchekyrkby 19th-Oct-2012 04:16 pm (UTC)
Clearly mythical, dontcha know.

I used to make assertions like this* when I was a teenager. Then I grew up, learned what facts and the internet are and stopped.

Edit for clarity* Make assertions about reality the way I saw it/wanted to see it rather than the way it really is.

mollybarton 19th-Oct-2012 03:42 pm (UTC)
Fuck this guy. My cousin nearly died after her pregnancy went horribly wrong (fetal death caused infection). It happens way more often than you think- even in first world countries.
elasg 19th-Oct-2012 03:43 pm (UTC)
Well, that took all of two seconds on google...

Ooops... as duly noted by the previous poster. Gawds, the ignorance of that man astonishes me sometimes.

cinnamontoast 19th-Oct-2012 07:36 pm (UTC)
You assume that he knows how to use the google.
layweed 19th-Oct-2012 03:45 pm (UTC)
Please tell me this douchebag isn't in a close race with Tammy Duckworth.
celtic_thistle 19th-Oct-2012 04:18 pm (UTC)
Fortunately, he is trailing by double digits.

If she, Claire McCaskill, Elizabeth Warren, and Tammy Baldwin can beat their respective douchebag opponents, I will be pleased.
kaelstra 19th-Oct-2012 03:46 pm (UTC)
*I* almost died during childbirth!
svtstarlight 19th-Oct-2012 04:29 pm (UTC)
Same. To hear some asshole say it didn't happen makes me want to put him thru the same shit I did. Then he'd learn to keep his bloody mouth shut. *fumes*
beoweasel 19th-Oct-2012 03:50 pm (UTC)
So, you're saying that all the women whose lives were put into jeopardy by complications of pregnancy, that they were all lying?
kaelstra 19th-Oct-2012 03:53 pm (UTC)
And that their doctors and nurses were lying as well?
chessiekitty 19th-Oct-2012 03:50 pm (UTC)
"Walsh claimed pro-choice advocates simply used the prospect of maternal death “to make us look unreasonable.”"

Nope, you do enough to make yourselves seem unreasonable. We don't have to help at all.
