Nelly Furtado supports Idle No More

9:57 pm - 01/13/2013
Nelly Furtado in a INM t-shirt

my summary: Apparently, a woman from Alert Bay on Vancouver Island, in Kwakwaka'wakw territory, met up with Nelly Furtado on a BC ferry and gave her an Idle No More t-shirt designed by her younger sister.

Her tweet: The t-shirt says, "Canada- Our Home On Native Land".. I couldn't agree more. #idlenomore

from Nelly Furtado's Twitter account and where the image is hosted and some other FB reposts (I hope that's okay)

keeping the ONTD in ONTD_P!

I'm trying to figure that out myself.

From what I've read about Idle No More, celebrity support of the protest group - comprised of Aboriginal peoples in Canada (First Nations, Metis and Inuit peoples) and their supporters worldwide - seems to be a good thing.

It is a good thing, saying "keeping the ONTD in ONTD_P" doesn't mean it's bad, it means there is a celebrity involved, among other things.

No, there's nothing wrong with keeping the ONTD in ONTD_P. It just means it's celeb-related.

ontd is a celebrity gossip community...

is there a good 101 type source that explains this whole "Idle No More" movement? I keep seeing references to it, but I'm not sure what is all about. thanks :)

I like the INM page on FB--it's pretty free-form but that's a plus, in my mind, since the movement by definition doesn't have an "official" anything

that said, idlenomore.ca and idlenomore.com are billed as the official sites (they may be mirrored, look identical to me) and they look legit with events posted, the history, etc

I have yet to see a mainstream article I like. And the comments! This issue is really bringing all the racist pus in Canada to the surface.

Speaking of Idle No More and twitter, everyone should check out the #Ottawapiskat hashtag. People are basically talking about Ottawa as if it was a First Nations reserve. Cause, y'know, if you want to criticize someone for mismanagement, wasting taxpayer dollars and general hypocrisy....

@JKennethY: In #Ottawapiskat unelected elders make huge salaries for no useful work. They call it the Senate.

‏@cmyrden: A million people from their tribe use foodbanks each month, while their Grand Chief GG serves 10 course meals in his palace. #Ottawapiskat

@YWGSourpuss: The Chief of #Ottawapiskat is resplendent in his traditional costume of blue sweater vest and cow boy hat head-dress. Fierce.

@aaronpaquette: Why does the leader live in a mansion while members of the community are homeless? #Ottawapiskat #idlenomore

@Juicexlx: #Ottawapiskat new criminal laws unfounded & nobody's allowed to criticize. Irwin Cotler comments: http://www.huffingtonpost.ca/irwin-cotler/omnibus-crime-bill-passed_b_1131280.html#CDNPoli #TurdReich

@SettlerColonial: Supporters of #Ottawapiskat commit to blockade rivers and caribou migrations.

@SettlerColonial: Fun Fact: There are approximately 2,800 homeless people and 36 Zambonis in #Ottawapiskat.

@SettlerColonial: Everytime someone says #Ottawapiskat, Ezra Levant mutters something racist and pees in his pants a little.

@calpurs: Rumours spread of #Ottawapiskat chief giving special advantages to his close circle of (corporate) friends

@Taiaiake: Re-educating the children of #Ottawapiskat is key to overcoming the devastating and socially crippling effects of Smug Complacency Disorder.

@Nonanon_anon: #Ottawapiskat is run so poorly we need to send in 3'rd party managers until fair elections can be held. #cdnpoli #idlenomore

@lyellowhorn: #ottawapiskat tribal police is haunted by serious misconduct of its officers over the years

‏@JeffCorntassel: Chief of #Ottawapiskat can't find any history of colonialism in his fiefdom - just to be safe, closes the royal archives to unruly Natives

That's brilliant!

that's great! I've heard that reply--that corruption and waste aren't confined to tribes--but this nails it.
