(Reuters) - A gunman holding a 5-year-old boy hostage in an underground bunker in rural Alabama was killed on Monday and the child was plucked to safety without injury, a local law enforcement official said.

"It's all over," said the official, who asked not to be identified by name because he had not been authorized to discuss the operation that led to the successful rescue of the child.

"The boy is OK," he said.

The rescue of boy came on the seventh day of a standoff in a rural corner of southeast Alabama involving a suspect identified as 65-year-old Jimmy Lee Dykes, a retired trucker and Vietnam veteran.

Dykes seized the boy last Tuesday after boarding a school bus near his home and killing its driver with four shots from a 9 mm handgun, local sheriff's department officials said.

The law enforcement source said a stun or flash grenade was detonated as part of the operation to free the boy, but further details were not immediately available.

The drama in Midland City, Alabama, came amid heightened concerns about gun violence and school safety across the United States after the December shooting deaths of 20 children and six adults at a Connecticut elementary school.

OH thank goodness the boy is okay. Suggestions for other relevant tags are welcome!

Thank goodness! I've been checking every day, hoping he'd be safely rescued. :(

Happy for the parents to have their child back. And so sorry for how traumatized that child must be having gone through all of this.

That's about the best ending this whole sordid episode could have. Now, can we follow up with some screening requirements for gun ownership?

First comment under the original Reuters article:

"That stupid bus driver should've been armed!"

Colony on Mars. PLEASE.

I never read the comments on anything now, because otherwise I'd be raging all the time.

Someone on my feed mistweeted to me that the little boy got killed and I had a minor teary moment until another friend of mine tweeted the actual news.

I am glad that little boy is safe, and that the whole neighborhood is now safe from a man who unfortunately was not safe for anyone to live near.

This really ought to be yet another sign we need to revamp the mental health of this country... but I doubt it. ._.

'This really ought to be yet another sign we need to revamp the mental health of this country'

...or you guys could revamp your gun laws, because I'm pretty sure it's not just the USA which has substandard mental health care, and I'm pretty sure it's not just the USA which has people with mental health issues, but the USA IS pretty unique for its complete lack (compared to pretty much evey other developed country) of any kind of regulation or enforcement when it comes to buying guns.

tl:dr- don't blame people with mental health issues when it's your gun laws that are shit.

That headline is what I like to hear about these awful situations.

Gun, amen to that. I didn't have very high hopes of that child surviving. Thank gawd, allah, the flying spaghetti monster, zeus, jupiter, and anybody/anything else in existence.

Thank gods the boy is safe.

Same. Every time I updated myself on the situation, my only hope was that the boy was still alive. I'm so glad this nightmare is over for him and his parents.

That's a relief. I checked the original post a couple of times; I'm glad the little boy is finally safe. I hope his family have the means to get him the counseling he's probably going to need after this, or that the state will step in to help. What a terrifying ordeal.

I'm relieved this is over. That poor child. God, his family. I hope he'll be okay :/

All my best to the little boy. I've been hoping for his safe rescue ever since the story broke.

And I have no sympathy whatsoever for the kidnapper. Who the fuck shoots a bus driver and then makes off with a child? Why the hell would he do that? And did he really, REALLY think it was going to end well for him?

He'd been terrorizing people for years. I wondered if this was his Death By Cop or what.

Thank God. I've been watching this story since last Tuesday and just...

I'm so thankful.
thedorkygirl 5th-Feb-2013 01:26 am (UTC)
Oh, wow. I'm glad the boy got out safe, but I'm kind of saddened to learn that the suspect was killed. I wish he could have been helped instead of killed.
abiding 5th-Feb-2013 01:30 am (UTC)
The guy was apparently anti-government, so he probably would have rejected and ignored any help he would have received if the judge ordered it, even if it's help behind bars.
