Chris Dorner Dead: Manhunt Ends In Deadly Cabin Shootout

7:29 pm - 02/12/2013
The massive manhunt to capture fugitive ex-cop Christopher Dorner ended Tuesday with the alleged murderer and a sheriff's deputy killed in California, the Los Angeles Police Department confirmed to KTLA.

The standoff with Dorner, a former member of the LAPD, reached a violent close near a rustic cabin in the Big Bear ski area east of Los Angeles. Since Feb. 3, he's accused of a crime spree that left four people dead, including two officers, and several others wounded in shootings in L.A. and nearby San Bernadino County.

In a widely read tirade posted on Facebook by Dorner -- called his manifesto -- he vowed revenge against police and other officials he blamed for his dismissal from the LAPD in the 2009.

On Tuesday afternoon, Dorner barricaded himself in a rustic cabin after San Bernadino County Sheriff's deputies allegedly spotted him driving a vehicle he'd stolen earlier in the day.

While in the cabin, Dorner exchanged hundreds of rounds of gunfire with members of law enforcement. One deputy died from the shooting and another was injured. Later, towering flames engulfed the cabin.

The country's most famous had eluded authorities for days, but resurfaced on Tuesday after he'd allegedly burglarized a home, took two women hostage and stolen a white pickup truck.

"Enough is enough. It's time to turn yourself in," said LAPD Commander Andrew Smith during an afternoon press conference. "It's time to stop the bloodshed."

Dorner's trail led back to Irvine on Sunday where police believe he shot a couple parked in their car.

Monica Quan, a California State University, Fullerton assistant basketball coach and her fiance, Keith Lawrence, a public safety officer at the University of Southern California, were shot to death in their car Feb 3. Police named Dorner a suspect in Quan's killing on Feb. 6.

Apparently no body's been found yet. So, stay tuned.

This tweet was posted about 2 minutes ago: @OutFrontCNN: LAPD officials providing an update on Christopher #Dorner @CNNLive "No body has yet been found' in the cabin.

yeah, i'm waiting on the body.

But CNN announced right after the SOTU....

natyanayaki 13th-Feb-2013 04:25 am (UTC)
There are so many conflicting reports, after the shootout a wildlife official said he saw someone who looks like Dorner, during the shootout the LAPD wouldn't confirm it was him and said it's someone who looks like him, apparently some people are saying that the LAPD found a body but it's apparently too badly burned to confirm who it is.

But of course, this is the same media who pinned the Sandy Hook shooting on the wrong person...so...

I bet they will find him in the cabin. There were too many helicopters and cops on the ground for no one to catch him or at least see him running away. More improbable things have happened, though.
zeonchar 13th-Feb-2013 04:45 am (UTC)
Yeah I'm thinking the same thing.
fauxparadiso 13th-Feb-2013 04:37 am (UTC)
If they don't find a body they better get dogs in there ASAP to sniff out his scent. Though I guess the smoke smell would fuck that up.
natyanayaki 13th-Feb-2013 04:46 am (UTC)
So apparently they believe that there's a body in the cabin, but it's too hot to search atm? http://latimesblogs.latimes.com/lanow/2013/02/dorner-manhunt-confusion-over-whether-body-found.html?utm_source=dlvr.it&utm_medium=twitter&dlvrit=649324

i can only imagine how long we're going to have conflicting reports about finding and identifying his body. this whole thing is just... really there's no words for it, other than tragic.

i will say, no one from the lapd should be talking about ending the bloodshed when they haven't exactly helped by shooting innocent people in the midst of their man-hunt. disgraceful.

I just read on Reddit that they have the cops saying "Get the gas! Burn it down!" on tape.

Sorry it's bedtime and I'm too dumb to do links right now:

It looks like they're still arguing about it on there, but truthfully I hope you're right. Not that it will make it any more pleasant for Dorner to have died in a fire, but at least my faith in humanity will be somewhat restored. :-/

The rumors about what the firefighters may have said are even more disturbing than the discussions surrounding the cops.

I understand that they were all upset and very angry. I understand that everyone has a right to vent, especially when they are afraid and pumped full of adrenaline. But, damn this whole thing is disturbing.

lol it seems you're either or even though even if someone wins, we still lose.
metanoiame 13th-Feb-2013 10:35 am (UTC)
I expect that the LAPD, continuing their pattern of being above the law, would rather kill a murder suspect than take him in to custody. I hate how the cops "defend their own" rather than apply the laws they alone have the authority and violence to enforce. A juvenile delinquent gets shot dead, someone might get a stern warning, but if a cop is killed, they bring out a massive manhunt and throw everything they have at finding and killing the suspect...
cinnamontoast 13th-Feb-2013 02:54 pm (UTC)
No matter what happened to Dorner in that cabin the LAPD showed that they are, as a group, completely out of control and corrupt to the bone.

OTOH, this is not news.

THIS. It's as if they read the manifesto and thought it to be a how-to manual.

Of course regardless of what it showed this will end up boiling down to the lone actions of a Mentally Unstable Angry Black Man™.

Live tweet from the most recent LAPD news conference this morning: @BuzzFeedNews: LAPD won't speculate at this time whether the body recovered at the cabin is Dorner's body.

msp_hacker 13th-Feb-2013 10:00 pm (UTC)
I ended up watching this live on CNN, and as soon as that black smoke started billowing up, I knew that the police had set fire to the cabin.
mimblexwimble 14th-Feb-2013 03:20 am (UTC)
Apparently someone tried to come out of the burning cabin and the officers pushed him back in?

Glad this is all finally over.
