OP: With all the gloom and doom over the potus election, it's been easy to forget that at least a FEW good things did happen. Here's one of them.

For the first time in history, there will be three Asian American women in the U.S. Senate in January.

Sen. Maze Hirono (D-Hawaii), who in 2012 became the first Asian American woman elected to the Senate, will be joined in January by two more.

On Tuesday, Rep. Tammy Duckworth (D-Ill.) unseated incumbent Mark Kirk (R-Ill.), and California Attorney General Kamala Harris (D) defeated Rep. Loretta Sanchez (D) to replace retiring Sen. Barbara Boxer (D).

Duckworth’s mother is from Thailand, and Harris’ mother is from India. Duckworth becomes the first Thai American in the Senate.

With her election, Harris is breaking multiple glass ceilings. She’ll be the first Indian American to serve in the Senate. She’ll also become only the second black female senator in history ― her father is from Jamaica.

All three women are part of what will likely be the most diverse Congress ever.

During her swearing-in ceremony in 2013, Hirono shrugged off her historic moment, saying, “Well, there need to be many more of us in here. I am going to make sure that happens.”

Mods, we don't have a tag for "asian americans." The closest thing is "asian people," which doesn't feel right to me for this. (P.S. A "diversity" tag would be nice, too.)

I'd be happy to add tags, but I'm on mobile and livejournal is awful on mobile, so if another mod doesn't add them for you, I can do it in a couple days (out of town without my computer)

how? I can do it

I usually do it by going to "edit post" (not "edit tags") and just typing in the new tag names with the other tags and it sticks. I still use the old style of LJ and it works. No idea how to do it on mobile or the new style though, unless you go into the manage community section somewhere.

OP, I added an asian americans tag if you'd like to add it to this post.

Also, I feel like it's being slightly overlooked how well we did this election is certain aspects so I appreciate this post!

Thanks! But I'm afraid something has gone awry. I went into edit tags, found "asian americans" in the list, clicked to add it, and then saved the post. AND THEN .... LJ came back and says it couldn't add all the tags because either I had exceeded the limit (which is a laugh), or .... something. I was in such a hurry to go back in and try again that I clicked without thinking and didn't read the rest of the message.

This time, when I went to the list of tags, "asian americans" wasn't there. Wtf, LJ? Very, very odd. You added the tag, I know you did, because I saw it, and then Frank ate it, or something. I'm at a complete loss as to what to do now. :-p

I didn't see the tags added, so I went ahead and added them to the post like I described above. Then I got down here and saw she'd already added the tag to the list haha. Oh well, it should be fine now :)

It kinda amuses me that Drumpf is going to have to deal with the most diverse Congress ever. Even with Repub control, that's going to be uncomfortable for him.

I'm glad there's good news like this. Did everyone see that Joe Arpaio got the boot? I cackled at that. Good riddance.
funhouse 12th-Nov-2016 03:09 am (UTC)
he's just going to leave it for others to deal with

I'm worried Arpaio's going to end up in Trump's administration somewhere.
