Rev. Mel White: BAMF

So I'm at work, and CNN is on in the background like always, except there's something strange happening on the screen. The things someone is saying don't make me want to bash my head against the front desk:

Rev. Mel White makes Tony Perkins stutter and look dumb:

As many times as I've watched Tony Perkins blow hot air in these pundit debates CNN is so fond of, this is by far the most owned I've ever seen him. I've never heard of Rev. White before, but he managed to do the impossible: get Tony Perkins to not only shut up for a second, but even when Tony had a chance to talk, it was little more than, "duh uh uh uh no THAT'S WRONG!"

This is also interesting because it seems Rick Warren is alienating himself from everyone: the left side of the argument just knows he's a liar, and the right side is annoyed that Warren is trying to be nice.

As for Rev. White: dude, you are completely awesome.

Sanders Tells Bauchus to Put Up or Shut Up

Sen. Bernie Sanders wants Rep. Spencer Bachus to start naming names.

Bachus, the usually soft-spoken ranking Republican on the House Financial Services Committee, surprised a Birmingham News reporter last week by claiming there are 17 “socialists” in Congress.

When asked for specifics, Bachus named only one legislator — Sanders, a self-described “democratic socialist,” whose vision of a socialist safety net is more Stockholm than Stalingrad.

Bachus’ spokesman hasn’t responded to numerous requests from POLITICO to name the other 16 lawmakers.

The congressman’s charge prompted cries of McCarthyism in the lefty blogosphere, a smattering of support from conservatives and an unexpected boiling over of a decades-old debate over the S-word that had been on a slow simmer since the fall of the Soviet Union.

“Has Spencer released his list yet? Everybody’s waiting with bated breath,” asked Sanders, an independent from Vermont who has enjoyed a friendly relationship with the Alabama conservative since their days in the House in the 1990s.

Shuster: If You’re Planning Tea Bagging Across The Country, ‘You’re Going To Need A Dick Armey’

Tomorrow, a bevy of anti-Obama “tea parties” — organized by corporate lobbyists and endlessly promoted by Fox News — are slated to take place across the country. One of the organizations spearheading the effort is Freedom Works, which is chaired by former Majority Leader Dick Armey (R-TX).

Last night, MSBNC’s David Shuster took Fox News — and particularly Neil Cavuto — to task for so relentlessly pushing the tea parties, noting that “the teabagging is not a spontaneous uprising“:

The people who came up with it are a familiar circle of Republicans, including former House Speaker Newt Gingrich and former House Majority Leader Dick Armey, both of whom have firm support from right wing financiers and lobbyists…Then there is the media, specifically the Fox News Channel…But most amusing of all is Neil Cavuto…Cavuto, defending his network’s promotion of tea bagging said, “We are going to be right in the middle of these teabaggers because at Fox we do not pick and choose these rallies and protests. We were there for the Million Man March.” […] Of course the Million Man march occurred, as newshounds.org points out, almost a year before Fox News was on the air. We can only speculate why widespread tea bagging made Cavuto think of the Million Man march, unless he got them confused with Dick Armey. And in Cavuto’s defense, if you are planning simultaneous tea bagging all around the country, you’re going to need a Dick Armey.

Watch it:

Schuster not only pointed out that the supposed “grassroots” tea parties are a lobbyist organized sham, but he also correctly noted that, in all likelihood, most of the protesters rallying against higher taxes and government spending just received a tax cut, courtesy of President Barack Obama’s economic stimulus package.

Do those attending tea parties truly oppose Obama returning the top marginal tax rate to where it was under President Clinton? Are they really concerned that multi-national corporations may have to pay taxes on profits they earn overseas? Or are they simply following Fox News’ cheerleading, straight into the waiting arms of Dick Armey?

EA wants illegal weapons back

Pens? Snore. T-shirts? Boring. Notepads? Been there, done that. Thinking up creative ideas for promotional tchotchkes can't be easy, but someone at uber-publisher Electronic Arts went a little too far last week.

The game in question: Godfather II, a Grand Theft Auto-style adventure based on the famous movie. The offending item: a set of brass knuckles, mailed to video games journalists together with other goodies including a cigar, a silk handkerchief, and a book of matches. But while it nicely complements the game's mafiosi theme, it also had the unfortunate side-effect of turning recipients of the mailing into criminals, as mere possession of brass knuckles is illegal in many states and can carry hefty penalties.

After blog GamePolitics expressed its consternation, the publisher began a flurry of hush-hush phone calls to arrange the return of the weapons. EA declined to comment beyond expressing a desire to assist journalists in proper disposal of the items.

Taliban execute eloping Afghan couple: governor

HERAT, Afghanistan (AFP) – Afghanistan's extremist Taliban publicly executed a young couple who had tried to elope, a provincial governor said Tuesday.

The pair were shot dead on Monday in front of a mosque in the southwestern province of Nimroz, an area where the Islamists have influence.

It followed a decree by local religious leaders that they should be put to death, governor Ghulam Dastageer Azad told AFP.

He branded their execution an "insult to Islam."

"An unmarried young boy and an unmarried girl who loved each other and wanted to get married had eloped because their families would not approve the marriage," Azad said.

The pair, both adults, were discovered by Taliban militants and returned to their village in Khash Rod district where the extremists are active.

"Three Taliban mullahs brought them to the local mosque and they passed a fatwa (religious decree) that they must be killed. They were shot and killed in front of the mosque in public," the governor said.

Azad said some reports said that the families of the young couple might be associated with the Taliban. The Taliban could not be immediately reached for comment.

The 1996-2001 Taliban regime, which was based on an austere interpretation of Islamic Sharia law, carried out public executions by stoning for adultery, while a couple who had sex before marriage would be lashed 100 times and then made to marry.

Extrajudicial "honour killings" are also practised in Afghanistan by families who believe a relative has brought them shame, including by refusing to marry a chosen partner.

The Taliban are waging a bloody insurgency to take back power and have significant influence in several remote and mostly southern districts where they are reported to run their own courts.

In neighbouring Pakistan, the government Monday signed an agreement allowing the Taliban to impose their version of Sharia law in the Malakand district of around three million people in North West Frontier Province (NWFP).

Critics say it will embolden Taliban and Al-Qaeda extremists.

This kind of thing just makes me incredibly sad.

Somali Pirates Hijack 4 More Ships

MOMBASA, Kenya — Undeterred by U.S. and French hostage rescues that killed five bandits, Somali pirates brazenly hijacked four more ships in the Gulf of Aden, the waterway at the center of the world's fight against piracy.
Pirates have vowed to retaliate for deaths of their colleagues_ and the top U.S. military officer said Tuesday he takes those comments seriously. But Adm. Michael Mullen, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, told ABC's "Good Morning America" that "we're very well prepared to deal with anything like that."

Still, despite Mullen's confident statement and President Barack Obama's warning Monday, pirates captured two more nautical trophies Tuesday to match the two ships they seized a day or two earlier.

NATO spokeswoman Shona Lowe said the MV Sea Horse, a Lebanese-owned cargo ship, was attacked and captured Tuesday by pirates in three or four speedboats. She had no further information.

That hijacking came only hours after the Greek-managed MV Irene E.M. was seized in a rare overnight attack by pirates.

In addition, Somali pirates also hijacked two Egyptian fishing boats in the Gulf of Aden off Somalia's northern coast, which maritime officials said had a total of 36 crew. It was not exactly clear if those ships were hijacked Monday or Sunday.

The Gulf of Aden, which links the Suez Canal and the Red Sea to the Indian Ocean, is one of the world's busiest and most vital shipping lanes, crossed by over 20,000 ships each year.

Based on what I read some time ago of these types of pirates, they sound a great deal like the gangs we have issues with here in the US.  Instead of drug wars and turf wars in neighborhoods, you get young men who commit these crimes to make *obscene* amounts of money.  They essentially end up living the type of life normally only seen of major drug lords, with their pick of everything of the best.

PROMISES, PROMISES: Is Obama dog a rescue or not?
By SHARON THEIMER, Associated Press Writer

WASHINGTON – Is Bo a rescued dog or not? Did President Obama keep or break a campaign promise in picking the purebred as the family's new pet?

The twists and turns of the Portuguese water dog's route to the White House make for the kind of intrigue that political junkies and the highly opinionated dog world delight in.

Barack Obama and his wife Michelle said during the presidential campaign that they had promised their two girls a dog after the election.

The Obamas repeatedly said they wanted it to be a rescued dog such as one from a shelter.

Scarborough To Coleman: "You Lost... It Is Over"

Scarborough To Coleman: "You Lost... It Is Over" (VIDEO)

The drumbeat is growing louder for former Minnesota Sen. Norm Coleman to drop his long-shot appeal of the state's prolonged recount.

In the wake of a three-judge panel declaring that Al Franken was the leading vote-getter of the U.S. Senate election, MSNBC's Joe Scarborough offered a preemptive and withering criticism of Coleman's likely appeal of that decision to the state Supreme Court.

"Seriously. Norm, I like you. You lost. Okay," he said. "Can we seat a senator so Amy [Klobuchar] doesn't have to do the job of two Senators? It is seriously not fair to constituents in Minnesota to drag this out any longer. It is over Norm, okay. It is over."

Ouch. Somewhere in the halls of the DSCC, people are cheering.

The problem, of course, is that Coleman has no incentive to drop his appeal at this juncture. His last-ditch effort is being cheered on by Republicans in Washington who are doing whatever they can - politically and financially - to work against the seating of Franken (who would be the 59th caucusing Democrat in the Senate).

"When are Republicans going to give up the ghost on this?" Scarborough asked before his mini diatribe.

Additionally, there has been scant political pressure put on Minnesota's Gov. Tim Pawlenty to actually sign the letter certifying Franken's election. That could change in the wake of Monday night's ruling. In all likelihood, however, Minnesotans will have to wait till the state Supreme Court weighs in.

Tea Bag Terror: Protests Causing Scares, Evacuations At Congressional Offices

A recent email to hundreds of thousands of conservatives exhorted them to "Send a Tea Bag to Washington, D.C. for $1." Other activists have organized local efforts to mail tea bags to the offices of their members of Congress.

It's all part of the anti-Obama, anti-tax "tea party" movement, backed aggressively by corporate-funded "astroturf" organizations like FreedomWorks. But now one of their symbolic protests is drawing attention for the wrong reasons.

Local reports indicate that the practice of mailing actual tea bags to legislators has repeatedly raised security concerns, and sometimes forced the evacuation of congressional offices in anthrax-like scares.

Brian Sperry, a spokesman for the U.S. Postal Service, told the Salt Lake (Utah) Tribune that tea bags in the mail "cause us some concern. ... They could pose a problem if the tea bag is mailed in a regular envelope instead of a padded bag," Sperry said.

The Chicago Tribune reports:

In Boulder, Colo., the district office of U.S. Rep. Jared Polis recently called for help after a lumpy white envelope with no return address arrived in the mail. The Boulder County Hazardous Materials Response Team found a tea bag and a note reading "We the People, 1773."

Earlier this month in Manchester, N.H., a hazmat team descended on the office of U.S. Rep. Carol Shea-Porter after employees opened an envelope marked "tax protest" and found a bunch of tea leaves.

And two days later, the office of Rep. George Radanovich in Modesto, Calif., was evacuated "after an intern in the mailroom came upon a suspicious package that was later found to contain tea." A haz-mat team and the FBI were were called in.

About 20 people from the building, including those in the congressman's office and two mortgage firms, were evacuated as a precaution.

Modesto Fire Battalion Chief Rich Sasser said the envelope held a granular substance. It did not have a return address.

About 3 p.m., the Stanislaus County Hazardous Materials Response Team went into the office. Sasser said their monitors showed there was nothing dangerous, so the hazmat team double-bagged the sealed envelope and turned it over to the FBI.

"We can't control who mails what to wherever," Sgt. Kimberly Schneider, a Capitol Police spokeswoman, told the Salt Lake Tribune. "At all times, [United States Capitol Police] will investigate and take the appropriate police action in response to any calls to us for any suspicious items that congressional staff might be concerned about."

A Children’s Treasury Of Delightful Quotes From Sarah Palin’s Attorney General Nominee

Promising young Alaska governor Sarah Palin has selected a nice new fellow named Wayne Anthony Ross to be the state’s Attorney General. He is perhaps the worst selection for anything in politics since that time that John McCain picked Sarah Palin to be his vice president. Just kidding, he’s a stitch! Anyone like RAPE JOKES? Wayne Anthony Ross has good ones! So good that they don’t even *sound* like rape jokes — they’re more like, “endorsements of rape.”

Palin's AG Pick Defended KKK Statue, Mocked Offended Student

Sarah Palin's choice for attorney general once wrote a column defending the statue of a KKK figure as an expression of free speech and mocked the psychology of a college student who protested the display.

Wayne Anthony Ross has come under intense scrutiny since the Alaska Governor and former vice presidential candidate announced his nomination. His resume includes derogatory remarks about homosexuals, accusations of sexism, and bizarre comments downplaying the fallout of the Exxon Valdez oil spill. But his most controversial incident may have come in December 1991, when he penned an op-ed for the Anchorage Times, a copy of which was obtained by the Huffington Post entitled "KKK 'art' project gets 'A' for courage."

Glenn Beck Parodied As The Patient Zero Of 'Obama Derangement Syndrome'

One of the areas of concern cited by Media Matters in their letter to Chris Wallace is Glenn Beck, who the organization criticizes for "engag[ing] in increasingly outrageous, demagogic, and conspiratorial rhetoric." Driving that point home for Media Matters is their hilarious mashup video which neatly summarizes Beck's "news" show -- a cable news venue in which the government is "full of vampires" who are enslaving children as a part of a one-world government scheme and where production assistants have gasoline poured on them. It's all really part of a comedy act that Glenn Beck calls "poor man's Seinfeld" and which the rest of the world refers to as "John Birch Society pamphlets shrieked aloud by a bipolar jackass."

HELL FREEZES OVER: Conservative Hannity guest actually speaks sense!

Bernard Goldberg: Hannity Going Too Far In Obama Attacks (VIDEO)

On last night's edition of Hannity, the end of the Somali pirate standoff seemed to drive a wedge between the show's host and one of his frequent guests, conservative commentator and author Bernard Goldberg. Hannity was bent out of shape, it seems, by the way the Obama White House had been "taking credit" for ending the standoff, which is strange because I don't remember a "Mission Accomplished" banner being hung or any inordinate deal made out of the matter, save brief statements.

Goldberg was apparently of the mind that Hannity was being rather petty, and while he allowed that the media may have made a big deal out of the event, he wasn't going to criticize the President in this instance. "I don't want to put Barack Obama on Mount Rushmore for simply being the commander-in-chief, but we have to stop going out of our way to find fault with every single thing he does," he said.

See the rest here.

Limbaugh's Dirty Little Secret of Radio "Success"

Ever wonder why Rush "Boss" Limbaugh's syndicated radio show is all over the place like the proverbial cheap suit?

If you do much driving in rural areas -- e.g. between cities -- "Boss" Limbaugh's bloviations are often the only thing you can pick up on a car radio. Hey, that's what CD players are for.

Did Rush accrue hundreds of local radio affiliates across the country because his political views are mainstream? That's obviously not it. OK, so why IS his show so "popular?" Why do hundreds of stations around the country carry his show, the most widely syndicated talkfest in the country?

Glad you asked.

The real story is not generally well-known. The only reason I know is through my covering the business of radio for years for several major daily newspapers and also, for industry trade magazines like Radio World.

It's because -- ready for this? -- Rush's show was, and presumably still is, given away for free to many local radio stations.

Keeping Alive the Day That Soccer Died

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

Published: April 14, 2009

At six minutes past three on Wednesday afternoon the city of Liverpool, the sixth largest in Britain, will stand still.

The silence will last two minutes. It will be at its most intense inside Anfield stadium at a memorial attended by families and friends of the 96 men, women and children who were crushed to death at the start of an English F.A. Cup semifinal on 15 April, 1989 in Sheffield.

The tragedy, the biggest in England’s centuries old sporting culture, resonated round the world. Those of us who were at Hillsborough stadium 20 years ago are left with a permanent sense of horror and helplessness. We went to an arena intended for joy, and left it counting the dead whose only crime was to follow their passion.

Steven Gerrard, the current captain of Liverpool, was 9 years old the day Hillsborough happened. He will lead his squad of players at the memorial service — Liverpool players who were born in Argentina, Brazil, Denmark, Finland, Netherlands, Italy and Morocco.

America isn't actually a Christian nation. In other news, water is wet.

Is America a Christian nation, as many conservatives claim it is? One American doesn't think so. In his press conference on April 6 in Turkey, President Obama explained: "One of the great strengths of the United States is … we have a very large Christian population -- we do not consider ourselves a Christian nation or a Jewish nation or a Muslim nation. We consider ourselves a nation of citizens who are bound by ideals and a set of values."

Predictably, Obama's remarks have enraged conservative talking heads. But Obama's observations have ample precedent in American diplomacy and constitutional thought. The most striking is the Treaty of Tripoli, ratified by the U.S. Senate in 1797. Article 11 states: "As the Government of the United States of America is not, in any sense, founded on the Christian religion; as it has in itself no character of enmity against the laws, religion, or tranquility [sic], of Mussulmen [Muslims]; and, as the said States never have entered into any war, or act of hostility against any Mahometan nation, it is declared by the parties, that no pretext arising from religious opinions, shall ever produce an interruption of the harmony existing between the two countries."

I kinda want to make copies of this and staple them to the foreheads of all those right-wing politicians who yammer on and on that this is a Christian nation.

Charlize Theron: Gay Discrimination Is A Form of Apartheid

South African-born actress Charlize Theron calls US marriage laws "a form of apartheid".  The Oscar winner and Dior model said,

I don't like living in an elitist world, it bothers me. I don't want to be part of an elitist sexual preference. It bothers me.  Maybe it's because I come from a country where I lived under apartheid.  This is a form of apartheid and I don't want to be a part of that.

Theron was referring to the "Grand Apartheid" laws in her native country, which segregated whites and non-whites.  The laws prevented non-whites from marrying whites or holding white jobs.  Harsh criminal penalties were imposed on civil protestors of the apartheid laws, with thousands of people tortured, sentenced to death, or banished.  The most famous face of apartheid is Nelson Mandela, who received a life sentence for treason but was finally freed in 1990, and went on to win a Nobel Peace Prize in 1993.

Theron has been dating super-hot boyfriend Stuart Townsend for years, and the couple have said in the past that they refused to get married until same-sex marriage was legal in the United States.

'It's not the reason I'm not getting married but it's maybe a part of it," Theron said.  "My ability to get married is a piece of me that I wish I could give to somebody who it would mean so much to. We should all have the chance. It's just so caveman, I can't believe we're still talking about it.'"

Justin Goodwin, 36, of Salem, Massachusetts, was attacked on Saturday night at a bar in nearby Gloucester, WCVB reports:

Oldtimers "Goodwin, who cannot speak because his jaw is wired shut following a nine-hour surgery, said in a statement Monday that he heard the men use a homophobic epithet during the attack.' I recall four to five men running toward me, punching me in the face, calling me a (gay slur) and get out of their bar,' wrote Goodwin in the statement. 'They proceeded to kick me to the ground in the face.' Goodwin said his sister, Kalem, had been in an altercation with several women at the Gloucester bar shortly before the attack. 'His eye socket is fractured, his jaw is bone was fractured in five different places. He was in surgery yesterday for nine hours,' Kalem Goodwin said. Kalem Goodwin said her boyfriend and her brother tried to separate her from the group of women but a bouncer escorted the three out of the bar into a back alley, where the men reportedly attacked Justin Goodwin a short time later."

The Day Of Silence Walkout Coalition

Even in the face of last week's widely publicized suicide of 11 year-old Carl Walker-Hoover, who had been tormented by anti-gay bullying, the religious right is shamelessly going forward with their plan to pull students out of school on Friday's Day Of Silence. Here's a portion of the just-issued press release from Karen England, executive director of the Capitol Resource Institute:
Friday is the Day of Silence, a campaign of the Gay, Lesbian, and Straight Education Network (GLSEN), which is often used to make homosexual behavior appear normal on school campuses. "Students should focus on academics in school. They should not be allowed to end their verbal engagement in class for a social agenda," said Karen England, Executive Director of Capitol Resource Institute. "We pay California teachers to teach -- by speaking in classrooms -- and teachers should also be expected to fully discharge their duties this coming Friday," she said. "If a school allows teachers to stop teaching, it should not get tax dollars for educating our students on that day." The Day of Silence Walkout Coalition includes organizations such as Concerned Women for America, Parents and Friends of Ex-Gays and Gays, and more. It reaches out to parents across the nation who do not want their children focusing on sexuality at school.
"Karen England is available for comment on this week's Day of Silence. To reach her, please call (916) 212-5607 or email kengland@capitolresource.org."

Feel free to send Ms. England the below result of what she stands for.

Black Woman Murdered by Stalker Who Had Been Using Youtube and Facebook To Threaten Her.

A young woman in Detroit, Asia McGowan,
was shot and killed by someone who had been leaving her nasty comments on her Youtube account and also had been stalking her on Facebook. This was someone she knew in real life-it was one of her classmates.

This story is really upsetting me, but I am trying to keep my head straight about the issues at hand. It is stressing me out for two reasons. One, almost every woman I know that has an internet identity has received some sort of threatening, stalker-ish, troll-ish email, comment, forum posting, death threat, blog post or shit even a vlog. This story is chilling and it is important to remember the stalking and murder of women happened before the invention of social networking technology, but this story is chilling nonetheless. As Miriam just said to me over IM, maybe these cases are just more visible now because of technology.

Two, why isn't this story on any of the national news networks? Because black women getting stalked and killed isn't worthy of national news coverage?

A student fatally shot a female classmate before turning the gun on himself Friday in an apparent murder-suicide that prompted a lockdown at a community college west of Detroit, police said.

The bodies of Asia McGowan, 20, of Ecorse, and Anthony Powell, 28, of Detroit, were discovered inside a classroom at a Henry Ford Community College building after police responded to an emergency call of an assault and shortly afterward reports of a shot being fired on campus, said Dearborn Deputy Police Chief Gregg Brighton.

They took at least one class together — a theater course that had met earlier in the day, Brighton said. Police did not believe anyone else was in the room at the time of the shooting.

College Course On "Language Of Ladies" Is Safe Space For Tragically Oppressed Men

Thanks to the reader who tipped us off about the recent controversy over at Vassar College about a Men's Health-esque course titled "The Language of Ladies."

Daniel Abramson, a Vassar STUDENT (who we must assume thinks of himself as some sort of highfalutin version of Mystery) had signed up to teach this mini-course, which was available to all students for zero credit. The course description for the now-cancelled class read:

This course aims to take a critical look at dating across lingual/cultural barriers. Experts in each local will be brought in to the class for instructional purposes. Coming out of this class students should feel informed enough about different mating rituals to approach women of different national backgrounds.

The course was canceled after only one class. The first class of The Language of Ladies was titled "Orienting Yourself for Women of the Orient," which, of course, raised some red flags. According to Ming Tseng, a guest columnist for the Vassar student paper, the class itself was no better than the title:

Audience member Reese Wong '10 said, "Some points Dan made about body language, politeness, common greeting customs, and the manner in which phone numbers are exchanged in Japan were valuable tips for people traveling to Japan, but I took offense to many of the stereotypical ways that Japanese women were described." In the guest lecturer's presentation, Japanese women were characterized as shy and giving, among other essentializing descriptions. The instructor admits that he did not collaborate with the guest lecturer and read over the presentation; therefore, he takes full responsibility for allowing those stereotypes to be reinforced.

Although she does not support the racist undertones of the course, Tseng is of the opinion that the incident should be viewed as a "teaching moment" that can open dialogues about race and gender.

Abramson himself has spoken out about the course, and apologized for the first class, which he admits "proved to be insulting" after all. He claims that he did not intend the discussion to take the turn that it did, and says he hopes to learn from the experience so that such a situation won't occur again in the future.

However, some students seemed to really like the class. Alexander Holodny, another guest columnist for the Miscellany News wrote,

Forums such as The Language of Ladies serve not as secretive manipulation schools, but rather as safe environments for men to discuss strategies to find substance in their lives. There is nothing wrong with being interested in your sexuality, despite the proverbially forbidden nature of sex. Especially if, in taking interest, men create a positive environment that enables them to internalize the essence of sexual interaction.

While I can completely understand how this course may have felt like a "safe environment" for men, I fail to see how this is any different from the rest of our fucking culture. Even at a liberal school like Vassar, surely there is some space where men can talk amongst themselves about men stuff, like "mating rituals" and how to "take" a woman to bed.

Holodny went on to defend the course, claiming that it was an accurate representation of cultural differences and thus should not be considered offensive. He argued that "the fact that Japanese women, in the general sense, tend toward shyness and generosity should not be interpreted as an offensive assertion-it's a merely an observation," one that could potentially help a man who is looking to "mate" with an "Oriental" woman. He ended his piece by asking the ladies of Vassar "Wouldn't it be refreshing to meet guys who feel grounded, confident, lively and playful? Guys with swagger?"

New York governor to propose legalizing same-sex marriage

NEW YORK (CNN) -- Gov. David Paterson will announce plans Thursday to introduce same-sex marriage legislation in the state Assembly, according to an assemblyman who was asked to be present for the announcement.

"The governor's office called me and asked if I would stand with the governor," said Micah Z. Kellner, a state assemblyman from Manhattan. "I said I will be thrilled to stand with the governor when he makes this announcement."

Paterson has expressed support for gay marriage in the past but when asked Tuesday, he would not confirm details of an announcement.

"There is clearly a problem in that those individuals who are gay or lesbian who would live in a civil union are still not entitled to somewhere between 1,250 and 1,300 civil protections" available to married couples, Paterson said. "We would like to try to address that at some point in the near future."

Former Gov. Eliot Spitzer introduced the same bill in 2007. It passed in the Assembly 85-61 but died in the state Senate.

The bill's chief supporter in the Senate, Democratic state Sen. Thomas Duane, said Paterson "knows how hard it is to pass this kind of legislation."

"He worked to try to pass hate crime legislation for many years," Duane said. "I know how strongly the governor feels about this kind of civil rights legislation."

Paterson has previously said he is committed to bringing "full marriage equality in New York State."

"No governor in the history of New York has been at the forefront," said Kellner. "He realizes it is the civil rights movement of the 21st century."

Duane agreed. "I also know that he [Paterson] knows that this will be a defining moment."

Bruce Anderson, interim executive director of the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual & Transgender Community Center, said it's "high time that we have the opportunity to discuss this in Albany."

"We have waited very long," he added.

If the legislation passes, it would make New York the fifth state to legalize same sex-marriage. Similar measures have been approved by courts or lawmakers in Connecticut, Vermont, Massachusetts and Iowa.

Because of its previous success in the Assembly, the bill is expected to pass there, but it will need 32 votes to pass in the state Senate.

"We hope to have this bill passed at the end of June, at the end of the legislative session," said Kellner. "No one wants to bring this to the floor to fail, it would be a huge disaster. We want to make sure that if we bring this to the floor for a vote that it passes."

Is The DHS Report On Right Wing Extremism Too Broad?

The Department of Homeland Security is warning law enforcement officials about a rise in "rightwing extremist activity," saying the economic recession, the election of America's first black president and the return of a few disgruntled war veterans could swell the ranks of white-power militias.

A footnote attached to the report by the Homeland Security Office of Intelligence and Analysis defines "rightwing extremism in the United States" as including not just racist or hate groups, but also groups that reject federal authority in favor of state or local authority.

"It may include groups and individuals that are dedicated to a single-issue, such as opposition to abortion or immigration," the warning says.

The White House has distanced itself from the analysis. When asked for comment on its contents, White House spokesman Nick Shapiro said, "The President is focused not on politics but rather taking the steps necessary to protect all Americans from the threat of violence and terrorism regardless of its origins. He also believes those who serve represent the best of this country, and he will continue to ensure that our veterans receive the respect and benefits they have earned."

Black man kissing white woman causes stir

What's this, the weekend magazine of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch has pictured miscegenation in action, and the locals are outraged! Imagine this photo, where your kids could see. Let's explore the comments, shall we? Yes:

The paper chose to illustrate its wantonly sexual and scandalous story "The 7 Best Places to Smooch" with this photo of a (real!) interracial couple, locked in what is clearly a smooch, right out in the open, in front of children. So this caused a "controversy" which the paper dutifully blogged about, and that post itself has already generated 21 pages of comments.

Tea Party cant get volunteers, so instead it promises cash prizes!!

Americans for Prosperity writes Facebook message offering financial rewards for publicizing tea parties.

The right wing and Fox News are trying to paint tomorrow’s tea party protests as an organic uprising, when they are in fact being spearheaded by high-powered business interests. Now, organizers are doling out generous financial incentives to publicize the tea parties. In a Facebook message today, Erik Telford of Americans For Prosperity told supporters, “I wanted to make you aware of an opportunity. Americans for Prosperity Foundation and Heritage Foundation have teamed up to launch the Stop Spending Our Future project, which offers four contests and $5,000 in prizes“:

1) Spread the Word| Capture the stories of five people at one of the Taxpayer Tea Parties happening all over the nation on Tax Day, April 15. The person that captures the best testimonial will receive $1,000.

2) Make a Video| What’s your biggest frustration about the government’s appetite for more spending in the midst of the tough economic climate? The top 5 submissions will each receive a prize in the amount of $500.

3) Write a Letter | Explain how you feel about the debt via a letter that your child, grandchild, or great-grandchild will open 30 years from now? The top 5 submissions will each receive a prize in the amount of $250.

4) Give It a Name| Convey the threat of government over-spending and/or excessive debt using 10 words or less. The single best idea-as voted on by visitors to this website-will receive $250 and be the basis for a new video.

“Stop Spending Our Future” has also launched a promotional video using young children decrying the “Troubled Assets Relief Programs” and other “bailouts.”

The Limits of Tolerance

By Randy Cohen

Online images recently showed a 17-year-old girl in Pakistan’s Swat Valley being flogged in public for going outdoors with a man not her father, a violation of Islamic practice. In Afghanistan, a proposed law would severely restrict rights of Shia women, forbidding a wife to leave the house without her husband’s consent and condoning marital rape. Both Pakistan and Afghanistan, like the United States, are signatories of the United Nations’ Universal Declaration of Human Rights, which forbids sex discrimination. For us, gender equality is a fundamental value. But we also profess tolerance for other people’s culture and religion. Which principle should prevail? Should we respond to these developments with tolerance?

Veterans Upset That Tea Baggers Plan To Hold Their Anti-Obama Protest At A Veterans Memorial In Kansas

Tomorrow, conservatives around the country will be holding Tax Day tea parties. Although “tea” technically stands for “taxed enough already,” Fox News’s Glenn Beck — one of the main promoters of the event — has insisted they’re about spending, not taxes. Previous tea parties have attracted protesters who called for impeaching Obama while slurring the President’s name as “Obama Bin Lyin.”

Fox host wonders if Obama administration will send ‘spies’ to tea parties.

Today, the Department of Homeland Security released a report on the growing influence of radical right-wing extremists. On Fox News this afternoon, guest host David Asman willingly tied the Fox-promoted, lobbyist-funded, “grassroots” tea party movement to such right-wing radicals, and suggested that the Obama administration might send “spies” to the tea parties to track extremists:

GOP desperately seeking Mr. Popular

We can tell you one thing about the current Karl Rove-vs.-Joe Biden spat: Democrats are loving every second of it.

Why? Because -- as with Dick Cheney and Rush Limbaugh before him -- the public has a very sour opinion of Rove. "We're not too worried that Karl Rove, Rush Limbaugh, and Dick Cheney are battling it out to remain the face of the Republican Party," a Dem strategist emails First Read. "Every time Rove pops up, it just serves to remind people what they wanted to change."

Indeed, Republicans seem to be having a difficult time finding a leader/messenger who doesn't have a net-negative fav/unfav rating go mano a mano with the Obama administration.

Cat Impolitely Interferes with New York Mets Baseball Game

When cats are in the news, you know it has to be interesting. Tabbys are cute, but wow can they run. Owning one, I know these creatures, so I had to applaud the one that got the best of baseball with the Mets the other day.
It turns out that one of the cats that may have occupied Shea stadium joined the team when they moved to Citi Field. While the Mets were in the third inning of a baseball game against the San Diego Padres, the cat made its move. The play had to be stopped while Daniel Murphy was at the plate and David Wright on deck. The cat went right behind home plate, while making a mad dash around just before that.

This may have been entertaining to some fans, and the folks afterwards, but the disruption was significant enough indeed. The Mets lost the game. Should they chock it up to a crazy cat?

Mother of Kid Who Committed Suicide After Bullying Wants Action

The Advocate talks to Sirdeaner Walker, the mother of Carl Joseph Walker-Hoover, the 11-year-old student who killed himself last week following relentless bullying at school:

Walker "On April 6, Sirdeaner Walker came home, walked up the stairs to the second floor of her home, and saw her son suspended from a support beam in the stairwell, swaying slightly in the air, an extension cord wrapped around his neck, according to police. He apologized in a suicide note, told his mother that he loved her, and left his video games to his brother.

Walker said her son had been the victim of bullying since the beginning of the school year, and that she had been calling the school since September, complaining that her son was mercilessly teased. He played football, baseball, and was a boy scout, but a group of classmates called him gay and teased him about the way he dressed. They ridiculed him for going to church with his mother and for volunteering locally.

"It's not just a gay issue," Walker said. "It’s bigger. He was 11 years old, and he wasn't aware of his sexuality. These homophobic people attach derogatory terms to a child who’s 11 years old, who goes to church, school, and the library, and he becomes confused. He thinks, Maybe I'm like this. Maybe I'm not. What do I do?"

Walker is demanding action from the school. At this point it's what she has left.

"Now you can't have any of my pot pie."

2 Years Later, Lost Cat Home Thanks To Facebook

Their cat slipped out of their East Bethel home and was on the run for two years. The family gave up hope of ever seeing Bob again. Then, just a short time ago, they were reunited by an Internet phenomenon.

"We got him after we got back from our honeymoon," said Bob's owner Shane Meide.

So Bob the cat held a special place in the newlywed's hearts.

"We love everything about his personality. We love the size, we love big, fat cats," said Nicole Meide.

So they were heart-broken when Bob escaped and ran away months later.

"We searched for days and days, we even put up fliers. We asked everyone in the neighborhood," said Nicole.

They never found their 20-pound main coon cat and eventually moved away from their East Bethel home.

Number of children born to illegal immigrants jumps

WASHINGTON - The number of US-citizen children born to illegal immigrants has dramatically increased over the past five years from 2.7 million in 2003 to 4 million in 2008, according to a study released yesterday.

The report by the nonpartisan, Washington-based Pew Hispanic Center also found that more than a third of such children were in poverty in 2007, compared with about 18 percent of those born to either legal immigrants or US-born parents. Similarly, 1 in 4 US-born children of unauthorized immigrants went without health insurance in 2008, compared with 14 percent of those born to legal immigrants and 8 percent born to US-born parents.

The findings suggest that the impact of the unprecedented spike in illegal immigration over the past three decades will continue to be felt for years to come, even as the size of the illegal immigrant population itself appears to have leveled off since 2006 at about 10.4 million adults and 1.5 million children. Children born on US soil are automatically granted US citizenship.

The study, which analyzed census statistics, found that US-born children now account for 73 percent of all children of illegal immigrants. And children of illegal immigrants - including those born overseas - now account for 6.8 percent of elementary and secondary school students nationwide and more than 1 in 10 students in Arizona, California, Colorado, Nevada and Texas.

(The Census Bureau does not ask people their immigration status. So the authors used a technique that essentially estimates the number of legal immigrants using other government records such as visas issued, then subtracts that population from the total number of foreign born counted by the census to come up with the number of illegal immigrants.)

The spike in births to unauthorized immigrants is largely due to their relative youth compared with the general population, while many of the challenges faced by their US-born children can be explained by the parents' far lower rates of education and lack of access to jobs where legal status is stringently checked. According to the study, among unauthorized immigrants ages 25 to 65, nearly a third have less than a ninth-grade education compared with 13 percent of legal immigrants and 2 percent of US-born residents.

The findings also reinforced the unprecedented geographic dispersal of illegal immigrants since 1990 across southeastern states with little prior history of immigration.

Massachusetts is home to an average of 190,000 illegal immigrants, according to the Pew study. The latest estimate marks a decline from 2005, when roughly 220,000 illegal immigrants were thought to be living here, but still much higher than the 1990 count of 55,000.

Overall, illegal immigrants make up 3 percent of the state's population, and roughly 20 percent of all immigrants in Massachusetts. About 4.3 percent of the state's labor force, or 140,000 immigrants, are undocumented, compared to with the national average of 5.4 percent.

Why are they talking about Massachusetts specifically? When I think of illegal immigration, I automatically think of southern California. Maybe that's just because I live there.

"First Family Introduces 'Bo' the First Dog".

"It's a case of Bo-mania at the white house Tuesday as the Obama's new prize pooch makes his official debut. The first family brought "Bo" the Portuguese Water Dog onto the White House lawn for his first picture taking session. The six month old pup was a campaign promise the president made to his daughters. The President said the only downside to the dog is that his breed is typically fond of tomatoes and could pose a threat to Michelle's garden." Source: WITN

Lesbian YouTube Video Embraced By Virginia GOP (NSFW VIDEO)

Ahh, the Republican Party of Virginia. You know, in the recent past, they've sort of given the world no indication that they're anything other than a dysfunctional, Twitter-abusing, confused and chagrined state party in precipitous decline. This hasn't changed at all. But we have to hand it to them: they're finding even newer ways to screw up, royally.

As Virginia political blog Not Larry Sabato details, someone who runs the RPV's official YouTube channel was apparently way into a YouTube video titled "The Kiss," a video that could potentially redefine the age-old "Virginia is for lovers" motto to include lesbian softcore erotica.

I think you'll agree, this video is probably NSFW, unless you work for the Republican Party of Virginia.

Wild for Wilders

Far-right Dutch parliamentarian Geert Wilders continues to make regular appearances in the United States despite his—and a number of his American sponsors’—links to the controversial Flemish nationalist party Vlaams Belang (VB) in Belgium. Wilders—whose Party For Freedom is the fifth largest in the Dutch parliament—gained notoriety for his short film—Fitna—which makes the case that the Quran teaches its followers to hate all non-Muslims. The film received international condemnation from Muslim communities, and a fatwa was issued by Al-Qaeda. Wilders faces prosecution under Dutch hate-crime laws for his statements comparing Islam with Nazism. On February 12, Wilders became the cause-célèbre of right-wing free-speech activists when he was denied entry into the United Kingdom and deemed an “undesirable person” by immigration officials. Wilders was scheduled to film Fitna in a meeting room of the Houses of Parliament but his anti-Muslim rhetoric was deemed a threat to public security. In early April, Wilders made multiple appearances in Los Angeles at events (here and here) sponsored by the International Free Press Society (IFPS), the David Horowitz Freedom Center, the American Freedom Alliance and the Children of Jewish Holocaust Survivors. The support of the Children of Jewish Holocaust Survivors is particularly striking considering Wilders’ admission in a December Haaretz interview that he would consider forming an alliance with VB in European parliamentary elections. VB has garnered condemnations for its party platform, which includes a call for amnesty for Belgians convicted after World War II of collaborating with Nazi Germany.
