Executive Director Of Tancredo's PAC Guilty Of "Karate Chop" Assault On African-American Woman

Executive Director Of Tancredo's PAC Guilty Of "Karate Chop" Assault On African-American Woman
It's evident Tancredo is only concerned about racism when it furthers his bigoted agenda.

Yesterday, former Colorado Rep. Tom Tancredo attacked Judge Sonia Sotomayor for being a member of the National Council of La Raza, absurdly likening the civil rights organization to "a Latino KKK without the hoods or nooses."

Tancredo's outlandish cries of racism are difficult to take seriously considering his own well-documented bigotry. However, the conservative blog Little Green Footballs has flagged a lesser known story demonstrating Tancredo's embrace of intolerance. Apparently, the executive director of Tancredo's anti-immigrant Team America PAC (also executive director of Pat Buchanan's group, The American Cause) pled guilty to "verbally and physically assaulting a black woman" and will be sentenced in July. According to the Factual Proffer from the case:

Had this case gone to trial, the Government's evidence would have shown beyond a reasonable doubt the following facts:

On July 7, 2007 at approximately 7:15 p.m., at Jefferson and M Street, Northwest, in Washington, D.C., defendant was walking down the street when he encountered the complainant, Ms. [Redacted], who is African-American. The defendant uttered, "[N*****]," as he delivered a karate chop to [complainant's] head. Ms. [Redacted]'s [redacted] attempted to detain defendant, but defendant was able to escape. Ultimately, the defendant was stopped and arrested by Secret Service officers.

The defendant, Marcus Epstein, is still featured prominently on Team America's website nearly two years after the crime. So, it's evident Tancredo is only "concerned" about racism when it furthers his bigoted agenda. (Though there is absolutely nothing racist about Sotomayor or La Raza.)

RNC asserts copyright to remove Pelosi video, again

The Republican National Committee yesterday removed a controversial video comparing Nancy Pelosi to Bond girl Pussy Galore from its YouTube account.

Today, the RNC asserted its copyright to the video to remove any trace of it from YouTube, asking the service to take a copy of the video down from the account of a Politico reader who had reposted it.

"This is to notify you that we have removed or disabled access to the following material as a result of a third-party notification by Republican National Committee claiming that this material is infringing," says the e-mail from YouTube, forwarded to me by the reader.

An RNC spokesman yesterday wouldn't explain why the committee took the video down.

UPDATE: The video resurfaces elsewhere.

The Bogus Torture Coverup
The Pentagon is denying the facts: Photographs of Abu Ghraib torture are even more sexually explicit than first reported, including rape and sodomy, writes The Daily Beast's Scott Horton, who has obtained specific and detailed corroboration of the photos.

The Daily Beast has confirmed that the photographs of abuses at Iraq’s Abu Ghraib prison, which President Obama, in a reversal, decided not to release, depict sexually explicit acts, including a uniformed soldier receiving oral sex from a female prisoner, a government contractor engaged in an act of sodomy with a male prisoner and scenes of forced masturbation, forced exhibition, and penetration involving phosphorous sticks and brooms.

These descriptions come on the heels of a British report yesterday about the photographs that contained some of these revelations—and whose credibility was questioned by the Pentagon.

The Daily Beast has obtained specific corroboration of the British account, which appeared in the London Daily Telegraph, from several reliable sources, including a highly credible senior military officer with firsthand knowledge, who provided even more detail about the graphic photographs that have been withheld from the public by the Obama administration.

A senior military officer familiar with the photos told me that they would likely provoke a storm of outrage if released. The well-informed source confirmed, just as reported in the Telegraph, that many of the photographs are sexually explicit, including those mentioned above. The photographs differ from those already officially released. Some show U.S. personnel engaged in sexual acts with prisoners and each other. In one, a female prisoner appears to have been forced to expose her breasts to be photographed. In another, a prisoner is suspended naked upside down from the top bunk of a bed in a stress position.

The Telegraph article quoted retired Major General Antonio Taguba, who directed the official inquiry in 2004 into the abuses at Abu Ghraib. Taguba told the Telegraph that the “pictures show torture, abuse, rape, and every indecency.” The Telegraph reported: “At least one picture shows an American soldier apparently raping a female prisoner while another is said to show a male translator raping a male detainee. Further photographs are said to depict sexual assaults on prisoners with objects including a truncheon, wire, and a phosphorescent tube. Another apparently shows a female prisoner having her clothing forcibly removed to expose her breasts.”

In response to the Telegraph account, Bryan G. Whitman, a deputy assistant secretary of Defense, attacked the newspaper. “That news organization has completely mischaracterized the images," he said. “None of the photos in question depict the images that are described in that article.” White House press secretary Robert Gibbs, later in the day, widened the assault to a general one against British journalism. “If I wanted to read a writeup today of how Manchester United fared last night in the Champions League Cup, I might open up a British newspaper,” Gibbs said. “If I was looking for something that bordered on truthful news, I'm not entirely sure it'd be in the first pack of clips I'd pick up.”

Can the GOP win the White House without the KKK-Latino-Illegal-Alien-Terrorist Votes?

Operation Gringo: Can the Republicans Sacrifice the Hispanic Vote and Win the White House?

Since the Republicans, to say the least, do not seem particularly inclined to curry favor with Hispanic voters by playing nice on Sonia Sotomayor, it's worth engaging in the following thought experiment: Can the Republicans win back the White House in 2012 or 2016 while losing further ground among Latinos? And if so, what is their most plausible path to victory?

I think the answer to the first question is 'yes' -- although it depends, of course, on exactly how much more ground they lose, as well as how much ground they could hope to gain among white voters. If they chose to pursue this strategy, the Republicans would probably elect to make immigration a linchpin issue of their campaign, perhaps coupled with the adoption of some paleoconservative, protectionist rhetoric on issues like NAFTA. While this strategy would be at best a temporary fix -- it would become less effective each passing year as the country continues to grow more diverse -- it might have some strategic benefits in the next two elections, particularly if the economy remains poor or there is some sort of double-dip recession.

In 2008, the Latino vote made the difference in the outcome of three states: New Mexico, where about 2 in 5 voters identify as Hispanic, as well as -- somewhat surprisingly -- Indiana and North Carolina -- where Obama lost nonhispanic voters by a tiny margin and was put over the top by Hispanic votes. It probably also made the difference, believe it or not, in the 2nd Congressional District of Nebraska -- Omaha actually has a decent-sized Hispanic minority -- although the exit polls aren't detailed enough to let us know for sure.

That the Hispanic vote helped Obama to win electoral votes in such "gringo" territories as Nebraska and Indiana is a reminder that there are Hispanics everywhere now; the presence of a surprisingly large and extremely Democratic-leaning Hispanic vote in New Jersey, for example, is one reason why Republicans are no longer competitive there. Moreover, the growth rate of the Hispanic population tends to be fastest in such nontraditional areas as the South and even the Prairie states. According to the Census Bureau, the state where the age 18+ Hispanic population grew the fastest between 2007 and 2008 was South Carolina (+6.6%), followed by a three-way tie between North Carolina, North Dakota and South Dakota (each +6.5%).

Still, the most immediate and obvious downside to the Republicans would be in the Southwest. They would sacrifice New Mexico and Nevada, where Obama already won by 15- and 12-point margins respectively, perhaps for the foreseeable future. Although Colorado is not quite in the same category, the Republicans are already suffering from the migration of well-educated (and largely white) coastal liberal voters into the state; to deliberately sacrifice its Hispanic vote, which represented 13 percent of its electorate in 2008, would render the state all but unwinnable for them. So let's assume that any manifestation of Operation Gringo cannot rely on votes from Nevada, New Mexico, or Colorado.

Glenn Beck reveals he is a Mormon

No wonder he's so obsessed with "end times"-type stuff. But didn't he also say Russo-American atheist philosopher Ayn Rand was one of his favorites? Yes, he did.

I hope some future guest asks him about Kolob.

Questions about Glenn Beck's faith are being posed by thousands of Internet-browsing Americans still exploring affiliations of the wound-up fury of fiery conservatism.

Searches asking if Glenn Beck is a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints have recently reached an all-time high on the Web, according to an analysis of major Internet search engines.

Search no further, gaggle of Googlers. Yes, Beck is a member of the LDS Church.

Ribbons dot Creston supporting convicted ex-police officers

By JENNIFER JACOBS • • May 30, 2009

Orange and white ribbons have sprung up in Creston in support of two former police officers convicted of a sexual assault there, and one man has shaved his head in solidarity, townspeople said Friday.

Victims' advocates are disturbed by the gestures, saying they make Creston even more uncomfortable for the sexual assault survivor, who still lives in the community.

IPERS's chances to regain lost funds diminish

By WILLIAM PETROSKI • • May 29, 2009

Hopes are dimming for a full recovery of $291 million in frozen Iowa pension fund investments that are tangled in a massive federal securities fraud case involving two prominent money managers.

Documents filed in U.S. District Court in New York this week show the remaining assets found by a court-appointed receiver represent only about 60 percent of all investor claims filed against Westridge Capital Management of California and its related businesses.

Has Business Schools turn Socialist?

A Promise to Be Ethical in an Era of Immorality

When a new crop of future business leaders graduates from the Harvard Business School next week, many of them will be taking a new oath that says, in effect, greed is not good.

Nearly 20 percent of the graduating class have signed “The M.B.A. Oath,” a voluntary student-led pledge that the goal of a business manager is to “serve the greater good.” It promises that Harvard M.B.A.’s will act responsibly, ethically and refrain from advancing their “own narrow ambitions” at the expense of others.

What happened to making money?

That, of course, is still at the heart of the Harvard curriculum. But at Harvard and other top business schools, there has been an explosion of interest in ethics courses and in student activities — clubs, lectures, conferences — about personal and corporate responsibility and on how to view business as more than a money-making enterprise, but part of a large social community.

“We want to stand up and recite something out loud with our class,” said Teal Carlock, who is graduating from Harvard and has accepted a job at Genentech. “Fingers are now pointed at M.B.A.’s and we, as a class, have a real opportunity to come together and set a standard as business leaders.”

Bill Clinton Position 'Evolving' on Same-Sex Marriage

ABC News reports on the George W. Bush - Bill Clinton "A Conversation with Presidents" speaking tour that kicked off in Toronto Friday night. One of the topics was gay rights:

"And while President Clinton mostly kept to his promise to 'thwart' efforts to get 42 and 43 to tangle with each other, he offered an interesting insight into his thinking on gay rights. On the issue of gay marriage -- which Clinton, like President Obama, personally opposes -- Clinton said of his position: 'Frankly, it's evolving' as he sees more committed gay couples raising kids. As ABC political director David Chalian has pointed out, Clinton isn’t the only Democrat whose position on gay marriage is moving. Clinton also expressed optimism that the military’s 'don’t ask, don’t tell policy' -- which he helped enact -- will eventually come off the books, allowing gay members of the armed services to serve openly. 'I think that time will lead to a repeal of this ban,' Clinton said. That’s one of many areas where the former presidents disagree. But mostly, this event was a lovefest."

The 6,000-person event at the Convention Centre was sold out, and attracted a few hundred protestors.

‘Out of the Closet’ — Black Atheists

In some black communities it’s akin to donning a white sheet and a Confederate flag. In others, it’s ostensibly tolerated yet whispered about, branded culturally incorrect and bad form, if not outright sacrilege.

For black atheists like myself, proclaiming one’s non-belief amidst genial wishes to “have a blessed day” is never easy in the seemingly innocuous context of casual chit chat between black folk.

Yet, according to The New York Times, a small but growing segment of the American population, galvanized by the hyper-evangelical climate of the Republican Pleistocene, have begun organizing nationwide and becoming more vocal about their atheism.

RNC slams Obama for romantic date with Michelle in New York

Sure, it’s one of the worst songs ever written. But perhaps President Obama and First Lady Michelle are closet Air Supply fans and are simply “Keeping the Love Alive” by enjoying a date-night in New York City tonight.

As we told you earlier, the Obamas are spending a presumably romantic evening together with dinner and a Broadway show this evening in the Big Apple.

If the RNC are fans of Air Supply as well, perhaps they believe the Obamas are “Lost in Love” because flying off to New York while the economy is tanking is just not right they say.

“As President Obama prepares to wing into Manhattan’s theater district on Air Force One to take in a Broadway show, GM is preparing to file bankruptcy and families across America continue to struggle to pay their bills,” RNC spokeswoman Gail Gitcho said in an email this afternoon.

Sonia Sotomayor: XXX rated

Comes now the case Farrell v. Burke. For those scouring the hundreds of opinions of Judge Sonia Sotomayor, hoping for a smoking gun or at least greater insight into the presumptive Supreme Court justice, this could be one place to start.

But only if your taste runs toward the sordid and/or ridiculous.

In this remarkably X-rated opinion dated May 31, 2006, Judge Sotomayor and her colleagues on the 2nd Circuit Court of Appeals tackled the case of a Mr. Christopher J. Farrell. It's actually a pretty interesting argument: Mr. Farrell challenged the terms of his probation, which included a ban on possession of pornography.

And in order to get at the argument, Judge Sotomayor had to quote extensively from some of Mr. Farrell's collection in order to demonstrate whether the material met the definition of pornography. In particular, and this is a scene worth imagining, the Princeton and Yale Law School-educated Judge Sotomayor had to wade through a book called Scum: True Homosexual Experiences. As the judge noted, Scum came from the author of other books including Cum, Juice, Skin, Wads, Cream, Smut, Filth, Sex, Raunch, (and) Lewd. Because Suits & Sentences is a family law blog, we will judiciously edit some of the excerpts and titles that Judge Sotomayor had to quote verbatim, including:

"Sometimes we would drive around the hills and he would pretend like he was kidnapping me, tie up my body, and then **** my face."

"US Marine Displays ****, **** to Cubans."

"His **** was sticking out of his pajamas."

and the incomparable...

"Wipes ******* With His Tongue, Then ******It With His ****."

source: Suits and Sentences. Bummer, no interesting comments yet about her graduating summa cum laude.

‘Gay’ does not mean ‘happy’

‘Gay’ does not mean ‘happy’
Experts decry DeKalb School System’s attempt to downplay epithet with simple definition

When Jaheem Herrera carried a pink backpack to Dunaire Elementary School in DeKalb County one day, classmates taunted him and called him “gay.”

And what the students actually meant when they said “gay” was “happy,” at least according to a retired Superior Court judge hired by the DeKalb School System to investigate allegations by Herrera’s mother that her son was so relentlessly bullied at the school that he hanged himself April 16.

“The children use ‘gay’ for anything and everything. The clothing is gay, the gesture is gay, what they say is gay, and that is a term they use,” Judge Thelma Wyatt Cummings Moore said at a press conference last week. “Now with these students we asked them, ‘Well, what does gay mean?’ They said ‘gay means happy,’ and this is many of the students.”

tl;dr: Some dude leading the investigation into Jaheem Herrera's suicide says that when the kids called him gay, they meant it as a positive thing. This? Complete bullshit.
