Gordon Brown Starting to Get the Suspicion That Obama Just Doesnt Like Him...

Barack Obama snubs Gordon Brown over private talks
White House spurned five requests from PM's aides for bilateral meeting

Gordon Brown lurched from being hailed as a global statesman to intense embarrassment tonight, after it emerged US President Barack Obama had turned down no fewer than five requests from Downing Street to hold a bilateral meeting at the United Nations in New York or at the G20 summit starting in Pittsburgh today.

The prime minister, eager to portray himself as a leading player on the international stage in America this week, was also forced to play down suggestions from inside his own party that he might step down early, either due to ill health or deteriorating eyesight.

There have been tensions between the White House and No 10 for weeks over Brown's handling of the Scottish government's decision to release the man convicted of the Lockerbie bombing, Abdelbaset al-Megrahi.

Brown's efforts to secure a prestigious primetime slot for his keynote speech at the general assembly in New York were also thwarted when the Libyan leader, Colonel Gaddafi, delivered a 100-minute speech to the UN, massively running over Brown's 15 minute slot.

Brown had not only been seeking a bilateral meeting with Obama, but feelers were also sent out to hold a joint press conference, an event that would have boosted Brown's efforts to offer himself as a linchpin of international diplomacy. Government sources said that Britain even changed its policy on swine flu immunisation in Africa to match that of the Obama administration last week, in an attempt to rebuild relations.

Mount Vernon Council is smarter than their mayor

A continuation of this post, in which the mayor of Mount Vernon, WA, declares intent to give Glenn Beck the keys to the city.

MOUNT VERNON — On Wednesday night, the City Council of this town of 32,000 distanced itself from Mayor Bud Norris, who plans to give the keys to the city to talk-show personality Glenn Beck on Saturday.

The seven-member council unanimously passed a resolution proposed by member Dale Ragan that stated, "Mount Vernon City Council is in no way sponsoring the Mayor's event on September 26, 2009 and is not connected to the Glenn Beck event in any manner."

The resolution came after two dozen people who had signed up for the public-comment part of the session spoke in often emotional language to oppose honoring the controversial talk-show host.

Beck, who just made the cover of Time magazine, was in the news recently for labeling President Obama a "racist," a statement that brought a boycott of dozens of advertisers from his Fox TV show. He is recognized as a polarizing figure.

"This man has done nothing for the City of Mount Vernon and its citizens," said Rhonda McDonald, of Mount Vernon. "If you want to give a key to the city, give the key to the chief of police."

UPDATE: Hate Crime Being Twisted as "Vigilante Justice"

Original post here: http://community.livejournal.com/ontd_political/4149719.html

The kidnapping trial for David James Bell enters day three today.

The good news:

- The prosecutions story is full of holes.  The mothers statement was full of inconsistencies and she repeatedly said "I do not recall"- regarding important details.

- Several witness for the prosecution have taken the 5th

- One of the witnesses for the prosecution (one of the men who beat Bell and Fair)  admitted to a violent criminal history.

- The Advocate has picked up the story: http://www.advocate.com/News/Daily_News/2009/09/23/Kidnapping_or_Hate_Crime_/

The not-so-good news:

- Family members who attacked Bell and Fair are now DENYING the attack.   With images like this how can they POSSIBLY deny what happened?!?

- The conservative local media coverage is riddled with assumptions and inconsistencies-- one newspaper even said "kidnapper" not "alleged kidnapper" before making a correction.

No curvy mannequins in Iranian shop windows

TEHRAN (Reuters) – Iranian police warned shopkeepers Tuesday not to use mannequins without headscarves or which exposed body curves, official news agency IRNA reported.

"Using unusual mannequins exposing the body curves and with the heads without Hijabs (Muslim veil) are prohibited to be used in the shops," Iran's moral security police in charge of Islamic dress codes said in a statement carried by IRNA.

Iranian police have stepped up a crackdown on both women and men, boutiques and small companies which fail to enforce strict religious dress codes since President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad came to office in 2005.

The measures are the latest in a country-wide campaign against Western cultural influences in the Islamic Republic, where strict dress codes are enforced.

"Both showing necktie and bowtie behind the windows ... and (the) selling (of) women's underwear by men are prohibited,"
said the police statement.

In the past, crackdowns tended to be launched at the start of Iran's hot summers and petered out soon after. But last year they extended into winter and included a drive against tight women's trousers and even men with spiky "Western" hairstyles.

Those who violate dress codes are usually cautioned on a first offence, sometimes after a brief visit to a police station. But they can be detained for longer, taken to court and required to have "guidance classes" after repeat offences.

Dress codes are most often flouted in wealthier, urban areas. Conservative dress is the norm in poorer, rural areas.

A MAN who fatally shot his girlfriend in the back of her head yesterday described her as a ''silly bitch'' while telling the Supreme Court that her shooting was an accident.

Leigh Robinson, 61, laughed as he told the court that he was annoyed at his girlfriend, Tracey Greenbury, 33, for calling him a ''wimp'' before he followed her to a neighbour's house with his sawn-off shotgun.

Chuck Norris: Stop Using The Modern American Flag -- Or Use Tea-Stained Ones

Versha Sharma | September 23, 2009, 4:58PM

In a column for Townhall.com, action star and conservative activist Chuck Norris calls on tea partiers to stop using the modern American flag as a means of protest against the current administration. And if you insist on using the 50-star flag, well, you can buy a tea-stained one for just $73.50 to show "solidarity with our Founders."

Praising the tea party movement across the nation that culminated in the 9/12 march on Washington, D.C., Norris insists that it's "nonpartisan" and "nonpolitical." Quoting George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Patrick Henry, and John Adams, the martial arts star also blasts the Obama administration (in a nonpartisan, nonpolitical fashion) for pledging "$900 million in U.S. taxpayer-funded aid to Hamas-controlled Gaza and Mahmoud Abbas' Palestinian Authority." That aid is going through nongovernmental organizations to help rebuild Gaza, not Hamas.

Baltimore Raven backs same-sex marriage

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

Baltimore Ravens linebacker Brendon Ayanbadejo is emerging as a supporter of same-sex marriage.

Ayanbadejo attended an event sponsored by Equality Maryland last week to celebrate the relocation of its headquarters from Silver Spring to Baltimore. The appearance came after he opined in the Huffington Post that "we will look back in 10, 20, 30 years and be amazed that gays and lesbians did not have the same rights as everyone else."

"If Britney Spears can party it up in Vegas with one of her boys and go get married on a whim and annul her marriage the next day, why can't a loving same-sex couple tie the knot?" he wrote in the piece.

"How could our society grant more rights to a heterosexual one-night-stand wedding in Vegas than a gay couple that has been together for three, five, 10 years of true love? The divorce rate in America is currently 50 percent. I am willing to bet that same-sex marriages have a higher success rate than heterosexual marriages."

David Toth, Equality Maryland's interim executive director, welcomed Ayanbadejo's public stance on the issue.

Toth noted that when someone "like Brendon Ayanbadejo speaks out for marriage equality, scores of people who may not give thought to LGBT issues will hear crucial equality messages from someone they themselves aspire to be."

"While not all of us are pro-footballers, one can never underestimate the power of just one voice to change hearts and minds," Toth said, "whether it's your own family or millions of adoring fans."

Ayanbadejo has been selected for the NFL's Pro Bowl three times. He did not immediately respond to interview requests.

Devlin Barret Talks the Death of Census Worker in "Rachel Maddow"

Census Worker Death: "Very Serious Concern" That Hanging Was Politically Motivated (VIDEO)

Associated Press reporter Devlin Barrett was on MSNBC's "Rachel Maddow" show Wednesday night to discuss the shocking death of a census worker in Kentucky.

"Obviously the details -- the few details we know at this point are very disturbing," said Barrett, "and could feed a larger political argument if this ends up being the result of anti-government sentiment. But they don't know that for absolute certain yet. And part of the investigators' job is to rule out any other explanation for what happened."

Maddow asked if Barrett had seen any evidence that the crime had political motivations.

"I don't think federal law enforcement would still be involved a week and a half after the body was found if there wasn't still that very serious concern,"
he responded. "And they don't have all the answers yet. And some of the things they know they're not going to tell us because they're concerned that there may be perpetrators out there that they would very much like to catch. But ... part of the process we're in now is proving all the other alternate explanations."

Barrett added that "in the county where this death occurred, they have instructed their workers not to go door to door while this investigation continues. Clearly there's a great deal of concern within this census worker community in that area."

Citigroup Awesome Plan: Loan To Wealthy Customers Only. Those Poor Bastards Need It Moar Than Us...

Citigroup Locations To Be Cut, Most Lending Will Limited To Wealthy Customers

Citigroup, which has received $45 billion in TARP funds -- in addition to billions in government asset guarantees -- has come up with a brash tax-payer funded restructuring plan: cut U.S. locations and limit most lending to only the wealthy.

As AP reported morning Citigroup is reportedly planning to reduce its "retail footprint to just six major metropolitan areas and limit most lending to wealthy customers."

For now, anyway, hopes that the U.S. taxpayer's investment in Citigroup would actually boost lending, seem to be rather unlikely.

Budget Crisis Forces County Sheriff to Unveil New Superheroes: The Garbage Man!

Garbage Men Trained To Fight Crime
Volusia County Sheriff's Office Launches Operation Bolo

The Volusia County Sheriff's Office is training garbage collectors, electricians and other mobile professionals to help fight crime.

The crime initiative, called Operation Bolo for Businesses on the Lookout, will teach workers how to look for telltale signs of crime in an effort to make communities safer.

"We get to see a lot more than what other people get to see," garbage collector Juan Lebron said.

Lebron and 75 other mobile professionals in Volusia County received training about criminals and how to spot them.

"As the times get harder, as our budget dollars get less, that means we have to reach out more and more for these partnerships," Sheriff Ben Johnson said.

Drivers are asked to be on the lookout for crimes like residential burglaries, illegal animals and illegal hazardous waste disposal.

"I think it's a great idea because I don't see that many cops around here anyway. The neighborhood seems quiet enough but we could still use a patrol around here or two to keep an eye on things," homeowner Ray Reboyers said.

Participants will also be trained to recognize distinguishing features of suspicious people, such as scars and tattoos, to assist deputies in their investigation.

While ACORN is Burning, The Real Villains Are Making a Profit...

The Unintended Consequences Of The "Defund ACORN" Act

This past Tuesday, HuffPost's Ryan Grim posted a story that rivetingly demonstrated the comedy of the Law of Unintended Consequences. In its zeal to quickly and unthinkingly get on the side of hammering ACORN for its recent transgressions, Congress passed the Defund ACORN Act, a measure written so broadly that it could apply to just about anyone! In other words, Congress made a decision to apply robust oversight to all manner of government contractors by mistake.

In a postscript to his blog post on Tuesday, Glenn Greenwald wrote: "Along those lines, if we had a real media, what [Grim's] article reports about the bill to de-fund ACORN would be huge news." He's absolutely right! This is actually an extraordinary story, that ably illuminates the dysfunction at the root of our government and the scintillating stupidity of a culture more interested in preserving seats than actually serving constituents.

First, let's go back and look at what happened:

The congressional legislation intended to defund ACORN, passed with broad bipartisan support, is written so broadly that it applies to "any organization" that has been charged with breaking federal or state election laws, lobbying disclosure laws, campaign finance laws or filing fraudulent paperwork with any federal or state agency. It also applies to any of the employees, contractors or other folks affiliated with a group charged with any of those things.

In other words, the bill could plausibly defund the entire military-industrial complex. Whoops.

To his credit, Representative Alan Grayson, a rookie Democrat from Florida, out-thought and out-maneuvered all of his colleagues and quickly went to work with the Project of Government Oversight (POGO) to compile a list of contractors that "might be caught in the ACORN net."

Lockheed Martin and Northrop Grumman both popped up quickly, with 20 fraud cases between them, and the longer list is a Who's Who of weapons manufacturers and defense contractors.

Did you know that Lockheed Martin and Northrop Grumman had 20 fraud cases between them? And that your Congress didn't care? It's true! Furthermore, let's allow POGO to put all of this into perspective:

Bear in mind that, since 1994, ACORN has reportedly received a total of $53 million in federal funds, or an average of roughly $3.5 million per year. In contrast, Lockheed Martin and Northrop Grumman respectively received over $35 billion and $18 billion in federal contracts last year. (Their totals since 2000 are $266 billion for Lockheed and $125 billion for Northrop.)

Collapse )</div>

And while we're on the subject of ACORN, which had a handful of employees busted for offering assistance to a fake pimp and his fake prostitution business, let's consider the case of taxpayer-funded contractor DynCorp -- its employees actually, LITERALLY, did service a prostitution ring in Bosnia in August of 2002. Girls between the ages of 12 and 15 were involved. And then six years later, employees of the very same contractor went to Iraq and DID IT AGAIN! And this time somebody got killed.

That's one government contractor, two war zones, two continents, two prostitution rings, one known death, zero consequences. What has your member of Congress done about it? SOD ALL, that's what! And DynCorp is still "supporting U.S. interests worldwide."

Now, this isn't to say that the measure passed offers the authority to pursue all of these scofflaws to the ends of the Earth. But Congress surely ought to do whatever it takes to end this wrongdoing and abuse, if for no other reason than that it's done on the taxpayer dime. Aggressive oversight of government contracting and procurement should not be something done on special occasions. It should be the default position of your representatives. When scandals like these bloom, there should be no foot-dragging or excuses or shrugs. But that's what you're getting, in all of these cases.

Oh, but they rushed, tripping over each other in a frenzied panic to be the first and best and loudest person on Capitol Hill to stick it to ACORN, whose transgressions and funding are so paltry by comparison as to be comic. Do not be fooled for a minute that these actions stem from a genuine desire to preserve the integrity of how taxpayer dollars are spent or to preserve your interests. The primary rationale -- the only rationale -- behind your representatives' decision in this matter was to ensure that their electoral hopes don't founder because of a media-driven scandal.

And the proof of this is in the pudding. The only reason the American people have earned a potential tool in guarding against contractor fraud is because Congress created it BY ACCIDENT.

And this is why this is an important story to cover: if the recent ACORN scandal proves anything, it proves that when the media wants to, it can spur and shame legislators into doing their job. And now, by pure happenstance, the media is afforded the opportunity to unleash the hounds of Hell on Congress and get them to use this legislation to go after all sorts of malefactors and fraudsters for widespread abuse of taxpayer trust. And even if every single abuse cannot be prosecuted under this new legislation, the press can hound Congress into doing even more.

This is a moment the media should seize. If they fail to do so, if they fall back on the pose that this is "not their role," if they merely demonstrate that their only interest is the raw political wrangling that drove legislators to mistakenly do some actual good, then the bottom line is this: the media will have aided and abetted far more prostitution than they have pretended to prevent.</div>

Rachel's Strip Club Offers Free Flu Shots

Free Shots, Food Offered To Senior Residents

CASSELBERRY, Fla. -- Residents in Central Florida were offered flu shots in an unconventional location Tuesday.

Rachel's Gentlemen's Club in Casselberry buys the shots every year and health professionals give them.

"I think it's great. I wish I had some of these figures like these gals do. They're beautiful girls," Casselberry resident Barbara Becker said.

Before their flu shots, the attendees -- mostly seniors -- are treated to a gourmet buffet.

"I hope it's not my last meal. I think Rachel's should be commended for doing this for the seniors, really," Becker said.

The lunch and flu shots are free to all Casselberry city employees, residents, veterans and seniors.

"A little uncomfortable at first. I actually texted my wife to try to find her and go right to her immediately," Casselberry resident Tom Rogenski said.

Rachel's has been giving free flu shots for six years now.

The shots are given in the VIP room, and advertised with fliers sent out to the community's seniors, senior center and on the marquee.

Management said the reason is simple.

"At this time with the rising cost of health care, it's great way to give back to the community. We're a part of this community it's a chance to give something back," Rachel's Food and Beverage Manager Kevin Ruscitti said.

Flu shots will also be given on Oct. 6 from 11:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Kharma is a Bitch. Aint it?

Egypt regrets killing trash-eating pigs
After killing all of the country’s pigs in an attempt to thwart swine flu, Egyptian officials see flaws in the plan.

They killed all 300,000 of Egypt’s pigs this spring in an impulsive attempt to control swine flu, even though no cases had been reported within the country’s borders. Now, Egyptian officials are wondering if they made a mistake, as the trash that the pigs once consumed accumulates in massive stinking piles.

Once, the Zabaleen -- Egypt’s largely Christian community of garbage collectors and processors, who live in slums outside Cairo -- went door-to-door collecting organic waste, which they would then feed to their pigs. The pigs were an ultra-efficient, low-cost way to process the waste.

But when the government ordered the cull, the Zabaleen and local pig farmers clashed with police in an attempt to keep their animals from being taken away from them without compensation. They vowed to stop taking care of the organic waste.

The Egyptian government proceeded with the cull despite criticism from international authorities, who warned that it would do nothing to stop the threat of H1N1. And, though they had promised to do it humanely according to Islamic law, reporters from a local newspaper captured tragic footage of live piglets being dropped into dump trucks, stabbed and beaten.

“They killed the pigs, let them clean the city,” former garbage collector and pig owner Moussa Rateb told The New York Times. “Everything used to go to the pigs, now there are no pigs, so it goes to the administration.”

It’s not just the lack of pigs that’s causing this big, smelly problem in Egypt. It’s also the government’s bumbling attempt to modernize Egyptian trash collection, hiring multinational companies with shiny new trucks and bins that simply can’t keep up with the flow of garbage.

Egyptian citizens are used to the ways of the Zabaleen, who were very efficient at gathering and processing trash, and they haven’t adapted to the new system.

Sadly, it seems as if the pigs died in vain. Despite the cull, there have been 800 confirmed cases of H1N1 in Egypt and two flu-related deaths. Meanwhile, the trash piles grow and grow.

Economist, writer and social critic Galal Amin summed up the situation in one simple sentence: “The Egyptians are really in a mess.”

Anarchy in Pittsburgh

The anarchists came to Pittsburgh to prepare to disrupt the G-20 summit. They quickly saw signs that made them believe that someone, or some entity, was prepared for them too. "Obviously, repression has already started," Pittsburgh anarchist Alex Bradley told a gathering of anti-authoritarians — the Pittsburgh G-20 Resistance Project — in a closed-door meeting on Sept. 20. Members of the group say they have been followed, photographed, stopped and searched in the run-up to their protests of the Group of 20 meeting of the world's leading economic powers on Sept. 24 and 25. The 40 people in the room were urged to write local lawyers' phone numbers on their bodies in case of arrest.

I had to post this article because I happen to work directly next door to the park where the unpermitted Resist G20 rally is meeting. The park is full of local and national media and NO protestors at this point. Some SWAT team dudes are commandeering our roof to "keep an eye" on the rally.

Updateish: They are official snipers, bringing official sniper rifles! Yayyyy! Also spotted: a dude in a seal costume.

update #2: Just went down with a bunch of my coworkers to blur the line between being a protester and an observer. There are TONS of riot cops. Seeds of Peace (the "controversial" group that has been trying to provide protesters food) managed to make it, which was nice. The crowd organized and marched after what seemed like a long stand-off. No violence. I heard the rumor that they'll be stopped at 32nd street. I wouldn't be surprised if some sort of altercation occurs there.

Also: the seal costume dude is from PETA, and I'm pretty sure you've all seen pictures of him somewhere in this community before.

Female soldiers in push for safer bras

STOCKHOLM

Swedish female soldiers are demanding the military provide them with combat-tested bras, amid complaints that the sports bras they must buy themselves unhook too easily.

Unlike their male counterparts who are provided with military-issue underwear, Sweden's more than 500 women conscripts must buy bras themselves since there are no military-issue brassieres, according to the Council of Conscripts, a union-like organisation.

...but Paul Kirk gets the fill in seat for Teddy Kennedy.

Massachusetts Gov. Deval Patrick (D) today named Boston attorney Paul Kirk, the former chairman of the Democratic National Committee and a longtime friend of the Kennedy family, to succeed the late Edward Kennedy in the Senate.

The Massachusetts legislature had been lobbied heavily by Democrats in Washington, who did not want the seat to remain vacant until the Jan. 19 special election. With Kennedy's death, Democrats now have (ostensibly) 59 votes in the Senate, one short of the number needed to beat back a potential Republican filibuster on health-care legislation. So Bay State lawmakers changed the law to give the power of filling a Senate vacancy to the governor.

Emanuel bearish on public option's chances in the Senate
By Michael O'Brien - 09/24/09 11:17 AM ET

The Senate has been fairly clear that they cannot pass a healthcare bill including a public option, White House Chief of Staff Rahm Emanuel asserted Wednesday evening.

Emanuel professed pessimism that healthcare reform would include a strict public (or "government-run") option, though he signaled an expectation that House liberals may still push for the prized reform.

"I think Senate's been clear about the prospect there is," Emanuel told PBS's Charlie Rose when asked if healthcare can pass with the public option. "That doesn't mean in the House they're not going to come to the table and demand it."

The chief of staff argued that the public option would be hammered out in conference between the House and Senate bills. He said that the bill would be likely be passed by the Thanksgiving holiday break in Congress, though.

"Health care will be passed before the members go home for Thanksgiving," he said, rejecting a question about whether the bill would largely resemble the proposal to emerge from the Senate Finance Committee.

"It will not just be on the Senate Finance Committee because the legislative process a place where both bodies get to contribute," he said.

Meet the Next "Czar" Target

You will soon be hearing a lot about Barack Obama's "Safe Schools Czar." His name is Kevin Jennings, and you will learn that he wants to promote homosexuality, he hates God, and he does drugs.

Jennings' real job title is "Assistant Deputy Secretary of Education for the Office of Safe and Drug-Free Schools." It is, indeed, an unconfirmed position, but it was, of course, created by an act of Congress.

The Office of Safe and Drug-Free Schools was created by George W. Bush's No Child Left Behind Act. It was designed as the successor to the Safe and Drug-Free Schools and Communities Program, which was created in 1986, as part of the general Reagan and Congress anti-drug hysteria leading up to the '86 midterms.

Attacking Tom Periello, ello, ello, eh, eh, eh

Politico's Thrush Apologizes For Using Misleading GOP Transcript Of Perriello

The line between evaluative reportage and frenzied press release stenography often gets blurred in Washington, and this blurring is a feature, not a bug, of Politico. And so it went, as this sad truth came back to haunt one of that publication's better reporters this week.

Earlier this week, Politico's Glenn Thrush published a story in which Virginia Representative Tom Perriello was quoted at length, discussing the tenor of the discourse he encountered in town halls in his state in an appearance on MSNBC. The way Thrush served up Perriello's quote made it appear as if he was calling out his constituents for racism. As it turns out, behind the truncations, set off by ellipses in the original, there lurked an entirely different statement.

Here's Perriello's words. The boldfaced items indicate the portions that were left out of Thrush's original:
"Well, you know, making the comment or not making the comment doesn't change the reality that clearly this is part of what's going on, but not all of what's going on. I conducted over a hundred hours of town hall meetings in my district in central and southern Virginia and the vast majority of them were civil; people disagreed passionately on ideological grounds. And there were the rare cases where very racist remarks were made. Sometimes they were called out by neighbors in the audience, sometimes they weren't. Clearly, race remains a factor in America but there's also a lot of disagreement here that is genuine here and not based on race, so I think we have to have both conversations."

Death sentence for Tanzania albino killers

A court in north-western Tanzania has sentenced three men to death by hanging for killing a 14-year-old albino boy.

They were found guilty of attacking Matatizo Dunia and severing his legs in Bukombe district in Shinyanga province.

In the past two years there has been a huge rise in murders of albino people. Witchdoctors use their body parts in potions they claim bring prosperity.

Dozens of people have been arrested, but the justice system is notoriously slow and this is the first conviction.

In July a court in neighbouring Burundi sentenced one person to life in prison and eight others to jail for the murder of albino people whose remains were sold in Tanzania.

Lucrative business

The three men attacked and killed the young boy last December - one of a string of more than 50 albino murders that have taken place in Tanzania over the past two years.

“If they controlled it before, what makes you think they're not controlling it now? The country was on the verge of revolution. They threw a Black man up, now we like this (complacent). They put a Black face on the New World Order and now we all happy. KRS ain't buying it.” …KRS-One (The Obama Deception).

HipHopWired: KRS, you've never been one to hold your tongue but you feel that some misconceptions about you and your feelings about President Obama have been distorted. So do you support the film The Obama Deception where you raised some interesting questions on the government and The President?

KRS-One: I'm not in support of it but I am in support of everything I said. No doubt but when I did the interview it wasn't supposed to be a movie. It wasn't supposed to be what it is. I'm sensitive to the struggle. There's a whole truth movement separate from Hip-Hop. There's a whole 9-11 anti-war movement that needs me in that capacity so I don't really beef with it too much and I allowed the movie to come out without lawsuits and all that type of stuff. But really, no. I'm not personally in support. I have my views on that.

Woman gets pregnant — while pregnant
Arkansas woman conceives two babies weeks apart, according to reports
msnbc.com
updated 3:06 p.m. ET, Thurs., Sept . 24, 2009

Arkansas couple Todd and Julia Grovenburg found out that they were having a baby and then discovered they were having two bundles of joy — but the babies aren't twins. An ultrasound revealed that a male fetus was conceived a full two-and-a-half weeks after the woman became pregnant with a baby girl, according to reports from local media. The Grovenburgs' obstetrician confirmed the case to Arkansas television station KFSM-TV.

The pregnancy is believed to be a case of a rare condition known as superfetation, or conceiving while pregnant.

The pregnancy may sound weird, but it is possible, according to NBC's Dr. Nancy Snyderman.

"Here's how it happens — egg and sperm, implant. Of course, that's your first pregnancy. But if you ovulate more than one time a month — and women do — and a sperm happens to meet that egg and they, too, implant, guess what, you get a second fetus," Snyderman said during MSNBC's “Dr. Nancy” Thursday. "You just have to hope it happens within that early window."

Due dates for the babies are the end of 2009 and early 2010, reports say.

Protesters jump the gun in Pittsburgh

Trouble has flared as world leaders gather in the US city of Pittsburgh for the G20 summit.

Reports said riot police used pepper gas and fired rubber bullets at protesters on a march near the venue.

Demonstrations were widely expected and thousands of extra police are on duty. The previous G20 meeting, in London in April, was marred by clashes.

Economic stability, financial regulation, climate change and bankers' bonuses are set to top the G20 agenda.

The clashes are thought to have begun after hundreds of protesters tried to march, without permission, towards the convention centre where the summit is being held.

Jailed former Taiwanese president petitions US

TAIPEI, Taiwan — Former Taiwanese President Chen Shui-bian has been indicted on new embezzlement charges just weeks after being sentenced to life in prison, and has filed a lawsuit claiming that the U.S. legally controls Taiwan and should release him from detention, officials and a lawyer said Wednesday.

Prosecution spokesman Chen Yun-nan said the new charges issued Tuesday against the jailed former leader accuse him of embezzling $330,000 from official expense funds for his 11 trips overseas as president.

Chen was sentenced to life in prison on Sept. 11 after being found guilty of embezzling $3.15 million during his 2000-08 presidency from a special presidential fund, receiving bribes worth at least $9 million, and laundering some of the money through Swiss bank accounts.

Veterans Once Again Suffer From Bureaucratic Nightmare...

VA Late On GI Bill Checks

Bureaucratic delays have left veterans using the Post-9/11 GI Bill with no money to pay college bills.

Patrick Campbell, chief legislative counsel for the Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America, blames foot-dragging in Veterans Affairs offices. The department, he said, "has a slow and outdated system that forces them to do every claim by hand." Each claim takes about two hours to process.

This is the first academic year for the bill, which took effect August 1. The government is supposed to send tuition money directly to schools, while veterans get a separate check for books and housing.

But it's not working. The Department of Veterans Affairs claims that the average processing time for a new report is 56 days, meaning that even if a student had submitted paperwork on August 1, it is probably still in bureaucratic limbo. Calls to the Post-9/11 GI Bill's help line are greeted with a recording stating that the department has received "an unprecedented number of education claims. As a result, it is temporarily taking longer than usual." A disclaimer on the VA's website discourages calling.

"Tropical Heat" in Serbia: How "Crimetime After Primetime" became a cargo cult

Okay, so this is a Wikipedia entry rather than an actual news article, and its latest developments are already a few months old by now, with most of its key events taking place more than a decade ago, but I still say this is quite possibly the greatest international political story in the entire history of, like, EVER.

So, I was consulting Wikipedia for my recent tribute to Forever Knight, to refresh my memories of the CBS "Crimetime After Primetime" lineup of late-night syndicated shows that Forever Knight was a part of, and when I clicked the link for Tropical Heat, a.k.a. Sweating Bullets - a Stephen J. Cannell-esque action/comedy about a private investigator named (I shit you not) Nick Slaughter, setting up a detective agency in the fictional resort town of Key Mariah, Florida - little did I expect to learn how a mere footnote in American television history gave birth to a veritable culture hero, and an icon of resistance to governmental oppression, for the Serbian people:

Wikipedia - Tropical Heat - Popularity in Serbia

The series was particularly popular in Serbia, where it gained cult status. In a tumultuous social environment - with UN trade embargo imposed on the country and civil war raging nearby - Nick Slaughter's character became a tongue-in-cheek role model and eventually even a symbol of oppositional politics, particularly among the urban youth. It was broadcast on four Serbian television stations — TV Politika, NS+, RTS 3K, and RTV Pink — during the 1990s and rerun numerous times. Aside from its dry humor and exciting plot, the show was extremely well received because its idyllic tropical island atmosphere was an absolute contrast to mid-1990s Serbia. The reruns in the then-isolated country made the show immensely popular, turning it into a minor national cultural phenomenon.

The "movement" to establish Nick Slaughter as a symbolic national hero probably began in the Belgrade suburb of Žarkovo where the first now-legendary graffiti "Sloteru Niče, Žarkovo ti kliče" ("Nick Slaughter, Žarkovo hails to you", which rhymes in Serbian) appeared on walls. Soon afterward during the massive months-long protests throughout winter 1996/1997 against the election fraud perpetrated by Slobodan Milošević and his party at the November 1996 local elections, the slogan "Slotera Nika, za predsednika" ("Nick Slaughter for President", also rhymes in Serbian) became popular on banners and badges as a symbol of opposition to the regime. Another popular slogan was "Svakoj majci treba da je dika, koja ima sina k'o Slotera Nika" ("Every mother should be proud to have a son like Nick Slaughter"). Serbian punk band Atheist Rap paid a tribute to the series' protagonist in the song "Slaughteru Nietzsche" with its graffiti-based chorus "Sloteru Niče, Srbija ti kliče" ("Nick Slaughter, Serbia hails to you") on their 1998 album Druga liga Zapad.

GOP: "Regulating The Free Market Will Lead to Socialism. Free Market Needs to Be Free!!!"

Banks fight to kill proposed consumer protection agency

If you doubt that U.S. banks long to return to the days of impotent regulation, you need only look at one of the financial sector's top legislative priorities: killing a proposed new agency that would be dedicated solely to protecting consumers' financial interests.

The Obama administration is asking Congress to create a new Consumer Financial Protection Agency to regulate consumer financial products ranging from credit cards to mortgages, and to simplify disclosure about them all.

Though virtually every cause of the nation's recent financial crisis was rooted in weak consumer protection, the U.S. Chamber of Commerce is leading the fight against the proposed agency on grounds that it would make credit less available and more costly. The American Bankers Association, the Independent Community Bankers of America, and the Financial Services Roundtable also oppose the measure.

"We have no argument that regulation failed. Consumer protection is just one of the many areas where it fell down," said David Hirschmann, the president of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce's Center for Capital Markets, which opposes the panel. "It just simply adds a new layer of regulation without fixing . . . our outdated, broken regulatory structure that was a contributing factor in our crisis."

The Chamber said it's spending about $2 million on ads, educational efforts and a grassroots campaign to kill the agency. It said that the grassroots effort has led to more than 23,000 letters sent to Congress to date.

The Center for Responsive Politics said that for the 2010 election cycle, commercial banks have donated almost $3.7 million to lawmakers — 54 percent of it to Republicans. Companies that provide credit have given about $1.4 million, 59 percent to Democrats. Mortgage bankers and brokers have given $581,423.

"Maybe instead of making government BIGGER, we should focus on making government BETTER," reads one Chamber ad.

The Chamber warns that the agency could morph into a monster regulator.

"If you look at this actual bill, the powers are so broad and so ill-defined that the scope of who is covered is incredible. They've managed to create a proposed new regulator for anyone who directly or indirectly provides credit to consumers," Hirschmann said. "If you allow people to give gift cards for your store . . . you've got a new regulator. It's amazingly broad in scope, scale and power."

The administration scoffs at those charges.

Even Liberman invokes Godwin's Law...

Lieberman: Afghanistan Could Turn Into Post-WWII Germany Being Overrun By Nazis

One of the chief proponents for increasing U.S. force levels in Afghanistan argued on Thursday that to pursue any lesser strategy would be the equivalent of appeasing a theoretical rebirth of Nazism in the aftermath of World War II.

Senator Joseph Lieberman (I-CT), one of Congress' most hawkish members, made the odd historical analogy during an interview with Fox News' Neil Cavuto. Urging President Barack Obama to follow the advice of his military commanders on the ground - who have called for an additional 40,000 U.S. troops -- the Independent-Democrat dismissed the notion that there was any parallel between the Afghan war (now in its eight year) and Vietnam.

Obama smells like hope (obviously)

UNITED NATIONS (CNN) -- Drawing on 2006 remarks in which he compared former U.S. President George Bush to the devil, Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez, speaking at the United Nations Thursday, said, "It doesn't smell like sulfur anymore."

In a rambling speech at the U.N. General Assembly, Chavez spoke highly of current President Obama, saying he is an "intelligent man" and comparing him to President John F. Kennedy.

"I hope God will protect Obama from the bullets that killed Kennedy," he said. "I hope Obama will be able to look and see, genuinely see, what has to be seen and bring about a change."

Three years ago, Chavez spoke at the gathering the day after Bush spoke, and said the lectern "still smells of sulfur."

But on Thursday he looked around the podium and said, "It doesn't smell of sulfur. It's gone. No, it smells of something else. It smells of hope."
