Too Big To Fail? Solution, Too Big To Exist!

Exclusive: Sanders Tackles Too Big To Fail In Two Pages

Senator Bernie Sanders (I-VT) introduced new legislation on Friday that should, he claims, solve the phenomenon of massive and failing financial institutions holding the nation's economy captive.

It's all of two pages long.

The Vermont Democrat-Socialist unveiled the "Too Big to Fail, Too Big to Exist Act" -- which he billed as a succinct remedy for tackling financial risk and avoiding a repeat of the taxpayer-funded bailouts that occurred just one year ago.

The act is straightforward. It would require that 90 days after its passage, Treasury Secretary Tim Geithner "submit to Congress a list of all commercial banks, investment banks, hedge funds and insurance companies that the Secretary believes are too big to fail."

Subsequently, one year after the law is enacted, the Treasury Secretary would be required to "break up entities included on the Too Big To Fail List, so that their failure would no longer cause a catastrophic effect on the United States or global economy without a taxpayer bailout."

Teabaggers attack Holocaust survivor Elie Wiesel

by John Aravosis (DC) on 11/08/2009 12:20:00 PM

The photo below is of Elie Wiesel in the Buchenwald concentration camp. He's in the second row from the bottom, seventh from the left (next to the wood support).

Holocaust survivor and Nobel laureate Elie Wiesel criticized a Teabagger protester in Washington, DC this week who held up a sign showing dead bodies from the Dachau concentration camp stacked in a pile, and compared this to the Democrats' health care reform plan. Here are a few of the Teabaggers' responses to Weisel,

So the full article is under the cut, and it's really pointless, but here's why I'm posting it. The headline hints at all sorts of terrible connections, but this single paragraph is the important part:

The family of Maj. Nidal Malik Hasan, the Army psychiatrist who killed 13 and wounded 29 at the Texas military base, held his mother's funeral at the Dar al Hijrah Islamic Center in Falls Church, Va., on May 31, 2001, according to her obituary in the Roanoke Times newspaper.

He didn't "attend the mosque." He went to his mom's funeral there!

Facebook Allows "Pro-Rape, Anti-Consent" Group To Stay On The Site For Months

A group of students, both past and present, of the all-male St. Paul's College at Sydney University, decided to create a pro-rape Facebook page called "Define Statutory" that reportedly was allowed to stay up on the site for several months.

The site, which went up in August, was shut down recently, but Reverend David Russell, an outgoing master at Wesley College, tells the Sydney Morning Herald that the Facebook page is simply an encapsulation of the rape culture that has pervaded the campus for some time. "This is a story that has to be told," Russell says, "there is no question in my mind, women are seen as meat. That is the awful, ugly truth of it.''

Comments point out there are hundreds of groups on FB that have "rape" in the title.  Granted, many probably don't have anything to do with actual rape or may be anti-rape support groups, but FB needs draw a line.

'Sesame Street' Dig at POX News Draws Backlash, Rebuke From PBS
Posted Friday 06 November 12:40 PM By: PopEater Staff

A 2-year-old skit on 'Sesame Street' that referenced a "trashy" news channel called POX News came under fire this week when conservative bloggers accused the long-running PBS series of a liberal bias. In the clip, Oscar the Grouch is a reporter for the Grouch News Network (GNN), but he bored one female viewer, who responds: "From now on, I'm watching Pox News. Now there's a trashy news show!"

Big Hollywood, the celeb blog founded by conservative writer Andrew Breitbart, called out the old skit (re-run this week) as a jab at the mega popular news network. "The message is clear," a blogger named Stage Right noted, "I can't even sit my kids in front of 'Sesame Street' without having to worry about the Left attempting to undermine my authority."

Since then, the ombudsman for PBS has weighed in and agrees the parody "should have been resisted" by producers.

Writing on his PBS blog, Michael Getler told his readers:

"Everybody who wrote to me heard this as "Fox News," and I can't really blame them. When I went and watched the tape for the first time, I thought I heard "Fox" as well, perhaps because of the association one assumes when you hear "news" right after the word.

I don't know what was in the head of the producers, but my guess is that this was one of those parodies that was too good to resist. But it should have been resisted. Broadcasters can tell parents whatever they think of Fox or any other network, but you shouldn't do it through the kids."

While PBS' ombudsman may believe the dig at FOX may have been a bit over the line, the show itself doesn't know what all the hubub is about. In comments to Yahoo! News, Sesame Workshop VP of communication Ellen Lewis called the offending skit "just another one of the many parodies that 'Sesame Street' has done over the years."

Arguing With An Idiot: Glenn Beck's Lawsuit Against Parody Site Rejected

An arbitrator has rejected controversial talk show host Glenn Beck's contention that the domain name infringes his trademark. World Intellectual Property Organization arbitration panelist Frederick Abbott ruled Friday that the less-than-flattering domain name was protected by fair use principles because the URL, when combined with the site's content, constitutes protected speech.

Fort Hood more ties to Columbine than Terrorists?

Is Ft. Hood Like Columbine? (November 06, 2009 - Newsweek)

By Columbine's Dave Cullen
Ashley Merryman

Today, like many other Americans, Po and I have been thinking about the tragedy at Ft. Hood – and how it brings back the memory of similar events such as the massacre at Columbine. But that raises a question: while the events feel similar, are they actually? It was a question I directed to Dave Cullen. Dave was a reporter at Columbine, on the day of the shooting, and he's been covering its aftermath ever since. The result of ten years of research was his haunting New York Times bestseller, Columbine. Here are Dave's thoughts.

Is Ft. Hood like Columbine? That’s the gist of the question I’ve been asked repeatedly the past 24 hours, in various incarnations. It’s a natural question, which has been running through my own head incessantly. My brain is about to bust with all the apparent parallels to Columbine, Virginia Tech and 9/11, and the startling differences to each as well. But the only responsible answer to that question is I don‘t know yet.

If we have learned anything from these tragedies, is that we won’t get a firm handle on why for weeks, months or even years. At this distance from Oklahoma City, we were convinced it was the work of Arabs or Muslims, and what was the difference between those two anyway? The Columbine killers’ journals--far and away the most revealing evidence--were released in 2006, more than seven years after the murders.

Old Man Murdoch Declares War on The Series of Tubes

Murdoch could block Google searches entirely

Rupert Murdoch says he will remove stories from Google's search index as a way to encourage people to pay for content online.

In an interview with Sky News Australia, the mogul said that newspapers in his media empire – including the Sun, the Times and the Wall Street Journal – would consider blocking Google entirely once they had enacted plans to charge people for reading their stories on the web.

In recent months, Murdoch his lieutenants have stepped up their war of words with Google, accusing it of "kleptomania" and acting as a "parasite" for including News Corp content in its Google News pages. But asked why News Corp executives had not chosen to simply remove their websites entirely from Google's search indexes – a simple technical operation – Murdoch said just such a move was on the cards.

"I think we will, but that's when we start charging," he said. "We have it already with the Wall Street Journal. We have a wall, but it's not right to the ceiling. You can get, usually, the first paragraph from any story - but if you're not a paying subscriber to all you get is a paragraph and a subscription form."

The 78-year-old mogul's assertion, however, is not actually correct: users who click through to screened articles from Google searches are usually offered the full text of the story without any subscription block. It is only users who find their way to the story through the Wall Street Journal's website who are told they must subscribe before they can read further.

Murdoch added that he did not agree with the idea that search engines fell under "fair use" rules - an argument many aggregator websites use as part of their legal justification for reproducing excerpts of news stories online.

"There's a doctrine called fair use, which we believe to be challenged in the courts and would bar it altogether..
. but we'll take that slowly."

Berliners celebrate fall of Wall

Celebrations to mark the 20th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall are under way.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel joined ex-Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev and former Polish President Lech Walesa in a walk across a former checkpoint.

Earlier, a service was held at Gethsemane Church, where protests went on for the months before the wall fell.

The wall's fall led to the collapse of Communist power, German reunification and the Cold Wars end.

Communist East Germany erected the 155-km (96-mile) concrete wall in 1961 to encircle West Berlin and prevent citizens from fleeing into the capitalist enclave. More than 100 people are believed to have been killed at the Wall while trying to escape.

13 August 1961: East Germany erects the Berlin Wall
August-September 1989: Tens of thousands of East Germans seek asylum abroad as communist control over Eastern Europe relaxes
7 October: Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev indirectly calls for reform on a visit to East Berlin
18 October 1989: Egon Krenz replaces Erich Honecker as East Germany's leader after anti-government protests
4 November: Mass protests by East Germans against the government culminate in a million-strong rally in Berlin
9 November: The Wall is breached after the East German government moves to lift restrictions on travel across the border to West Germany

Merkel was joined by Mr Gorbachev and Mr Walesa as she crossed the Bornholmer Bridge, which was the first crossing to open 20 years ago, after weeks of pro-democracy protests.

Sarah Palin Keeps Bringing Teh Crazy

Sarah Palin Suggests Coin Conspiracy In Wisconsin Speech

Sarah Palin didn't allow press at her speech Friday at a Wisconsin Right to Life fundraising banquet, and attendees were barred from bringing cell phones, cameras, laptops, or recording devices of any kind. But Politico managed to get a few reporters in to hear the former Alaska governor again raise the specter of death panels and claim an anti-Christian conspiracy in the redesign of U.S. coins.

While Palin didn't use the phrase "death panels," she implied that rationed care would lead to elderly or disabled people being denied care to save money.

"What may they feel about an elderly person who doesn't have a whole lot of productive years left," Palin asked the audience of about 5,000. (Tickets were $30 each.) "In order to save government money, government health care has to be rationed... [so] then this elderly person that perhaps could be seen as costing taxpayers to pay for a non-productive life? Do you think our elderly will be first in line for limited health care?"

Palin made the "death panel" charge explicitly in a Facebook post the following day. "We had been told there were no "death panels" in the bill either," she wrote. "But look closely at the provision mandating bureaucratic panels that will be calling the shots regarding who will receive government health care."

In Wisconsin, Palin also expressed fear over the moving of "In God We Trust" to the edge of American coins.

"Who calls a shot like that?" she demanded. "Who makes a decision like that?"

She added: "It's a disturbing trend."

Consumer group finds elevated BPA levels in range of foods

Some of the products were labeled 'BPA free.' Finding boosts the case for banning the chemical additive in materials that come in contact with food and beverages.

By Andrew Zajac

Reporting from Washington - A consumer advocacy group's analysis of canned goods has found measurable levels of the chemical additive bisphenol A, or BPA, across a range of foods, including some that were labeled "BPA free."

Children eating multiple servings of some of the tested food could get doses of BPA "near levels that have caused adverse effects in several animal studies," according to the survey released Monday by Consumers Union, a nonprofit organization that publishes Consumer Reports.

The findings bolster the case for banning BPA from use in materials that come in contact with food and beverages -- such as can linings, baby bottles and sippy cups -- the group said in a letter to Food and Drug Administration Commissioner Margaret Hamburg.

An FDA spokesman had no immediate comment but noted that a review of existing evidence about BPA's health effects was nearly completed and that Hamburg would "make a decision how to proceed" by the end of the month.

BPA is a plastic hardener and a component of epoxy resin. Some studies have linked the chemical to reproductive abnormalities and increased risk of cancer and diabetes. Several governments have prohibited the sale of baby bottles made with BPA.

The FDA in 2008 released a draft report that found BPA was safe in food contact materials. But critics charged that the agency had based its report on out-of-date studies sponsored by the chemical industry, prompting the review.

Kansas City Chiefs cut disgruntled RB Larry Johnson

The Kansas City Chiefs have cut RB Larry Johnson, one day after his suspension ended.

The move comes two weeks after Johnson belittled coach Todd Haley in a series of Twitter posts and used gay slurs with reporters in the team's locker room.

A two-time Pro Bowler, Johnson was second on the team's all-time rushing list with 6,090 yards. A group of fans had petitioned the team last week not to allow Johnson to gain the 75 yards he needed break the team's rushing record.

The Chiefs suspended Johnson for detrimental conduct two weeks ago, then worked out a settlement in which he'd miss only one game check. He was not eligible for yesterday's 24-21 loss at Jacksonville.

Johnson drew criticism from gay-advocacy group GLAAD after his use of a gay slur. He later apologized.

He has had a rocky relationship with the team, and requested the team part ways with him last season, before GM Scott Pioli and head coach Todd Haley came aboard.

In Letter To Pelosi, 41 House Dems Pledge To Vote Against Bill With Anti-Abortion Amendment

In a move that will intensify the coming war over how to treat abortion in the health care bill, more than three dozen House Dems have signed a letter to Nancy Pelosi firmly pledging to vote against the bill if it contains an anti-abortion amendment.

A source sends over a working copy of the letter without the signatories, and the source says it currently bears the signatures of 41 House Dems. They’re all vowing to vote No on a bill if it contains the Stupak amendment — enough to sink the bill:

As Members of Congress we believe that women should have access to a full range of reproductive health care. Health care reform must not be misused as an opportunity to restrict women’s access to reproductive health services.

The Stupak-Pitts amendment to H.R. 3962, The Affordable Healthcare for America Act, represents an unprecedented and unacceptable restriction on women’s ability to access the full range of reproductive health services to which they are lawfully entitled. We will not vote for a conference report that contains language that restricts women’s right to choose any further than current law.

That’s unequivocal, with no wiggle room. The Washington Post reported this morning that Rep. Diana DeGette had collected 40 signatures vowing a No vote, without noting the language of their vow or how this would be communicated.

Now we know — at least 41 House Dems are writing directly to Pelosi, telling her that they will not vote for anything “that contains language that restricts women’s right to choose any further than current law.”

I’m told that the letter is still being circulated for even more signatures, and I’ll bring you a list of signatories when I have it.

The Stupak amendment, of course, would sharply curtail the availability of abortions, which many insurance plans now offer, and was added in order to win the support of moderate Dems. That pro-choice Democrats are now drawing such a sharp line against the amendment will make the politics considerably more difficult going forward.

I'm DYING to know who the other 40 are. I'm crossing my fingers that my congressman has either already signed or will when it's presented to him.

Can A Boy Wear A Skirt To School?

High Schools Struggle When Gender Bends The Dress Code

Girls: no midriff-baring blouses, stiletto heels, miniskirts.

Boys: no sagging pants, muscle shirts.

But do the math.

“Rules” + “teenager” = “challenges.”

If the skirt is an acceptable length, can a boy wear it?

Can a girl attend her prom in a tuxedo?

In recent years, a growing number of teenagers have been dressing to articulate — or confound — gender identity and sexual orientation. Certainly they have been confounding school officials, whose responses have ranged from indifference to applause to bans.

Last week, a cross-dressing Houston senior was sent home because his wig violated the school’s dress code rule that a boy’s hair may not be “longer than the bottom of a regular shirt collar.” In October, officials at a high school in Cobb County, Ga., sent home a boy who favored wigs, makeup and skinny jeans. In August, a Mississippi student’s senior portrait was barred from her yearbook because she had posed in a tuxedo.

Other schools are more accepting of unconventional gender expression. In September, a freshman girl at Rincon High School in Tucson who identifies as male was nominated for homecoming prince. Last May, a gay male student at a Los Angeles high school was crowned prom queen.

Collapse )

Also, I have to say:

"All this is too much for some educators, who say high school should not be a public stage to work out private identity issues."

Really? Because whether you think it should be or not, I'm pretty sure that's exactly what high school is.

Internet Virus Frames Users For Child Porn (November 09, 2009 - HuffPo - JORDAN ROBERTSON)

Heinous pictures and videos can be deposited on computers by viruses – the malicious programs better known for swiping your credit card numbers. In this twist, it's your reputation that's stolen.

Pedophiles can exploit virus-infected PCs to remotely store and view their stash without fear they'll get caught. Pranksters or someone trying to frame you can tap viruses to make it appear that you surf illegal Web sites.

Whatever the motivation, you get child porn on your computer – and might not realize it until police knock at your door.

Heritage Foundation Sticks Up For Violent Sex Offenders

The Heritage Foundation's True Colors

As we have mentioned before, the conservative Heritage Foundation produces the website, which advocates the theory that "as a result of rampant overcriminalization, trivial conduct is now often punished as a crime."

Heritage claims the website:

... describes the trend in America - and particularly in Congress - to use the criminal law to "solve" every problem, punish every mistake (instead of making proper use of civil penalties), and coerce Americans into conforming their behavior to satisfy social engineering objectives.

A sampling of what the Heritage Foundation views as the "rampant overcriminalization" of "trivial conduct" is truly striking and shows why conservative politicians should think twice before embracing the views held by the conservative think tank.

As you can see below, the folks at Heritage oppose legislation tackling child sex slavery, child sex trafficking, child pornography and violence against children.

Are You a Feminist or a Feminine-ist?

True story: My friend David got mugged at a bank machine by a beautiful, leggy, sexy woman.

"Actually, it might have been a transvestite," David corrected himself.

"It's okay if you were mugged by a woman," I told him, smiling.

Now embarrassed, David said, "The more I think about it, the more I'm sure he was a transvestite."

I laughed but was also intrigued by why David would be so embarrassed to be mugged by a beautiful, leggy, sexy woman, but not a man.

The story represents what I view as an ongoing problem for women today. There's still a disconnect between a woman being "beautiful, leggy, sexy" and being powerful—even in a low-level career like mugger.

Almost from the introduction of the word "feminism" into our world, the definition has become corroded to mean something less than complimentary than its original intent. Somewhere along the line, to be a feminist started to mean a woman who's basically unattractive both in looks and spirit.

I find this negative connotation to be shameful and highly unhelpful. Women could truly benefit from finding a more inspiring word than "feminism" to stand by, as well as stand for, when seeking to become our most powerful and successful selves. We don't have to make a choice between feminine or powerful and successful. We can be all those things.

With this in mind, I'd like to put forth that starting today, the word "feminism" be updated to become the new word "feminine-ism."

Conservative Group: Time To Purge Muslims From Military

A chief spokesman for the pro-life, far-right organization, American Family Association, has called for the purging of Muslim soldiers from military ranks in the wake of the tragic killings at Fort Hood.

Bryan Fischer, AFA's Director of Issues Analysis, put up a relatively unnoticed blog post last Friday arguing that U.S. command needed to "stop the practice of allowing Muslims to serve in the U.S. military."

"The reason is simple," Firscher wrote, "the more devout a Muslim is, the more of a threat he is to national security. Devout Muslims, who accept the teachings of the Prophet as divinely inspired, believe it is their duty to kill infidels. Yesterday's massacre is living proof. And yesterday's incident is not the first fragging incident involving a Muslim taking out his fellow U.S. soldiers."

"Of course, most U.S. Muslims don't shoot up their fellow soldiers. Fine. As soon as Muslims give us a foolproof way to identify their jihadis from their moderates, we'll go back to allowing them to serve. You tell us who the ones are that we have to worry about, prove you're right, and Muslims can once again serve. Until that day comes, we simply cannot afford the risk. You invent a jihadi-detector that works every time it's used, and we'll welcome you back with open arms."

"This is not Islamophobia, it is Islamo-realism."

The comments came days before Army Chief of Staff George Casey expressed his concern that a wave of anti-Muslim sentiment would make its way through the military ranks in the wake of the Ft. Hood shootings. Certainly they represent the most politically divisive (not to mention narrow-minded) take yet as to the actions of Nidal Malik Hasan.

American Family Association is, at its heart, a culturally conservative institution but, even for them, this post pushes the envelope. It will be interesting to see what, if anything, Republican figures who have appeared before the AFA will say about Fischer's missive.

Vaginas Are The Deadliest Disease, Worst Than Cancer Or Smoke.

Dems blast Sessions women-to-smokers comparison

Rep. Pete Sessions (R-Tex.), the head of the Republicans campaign committee, caused a stir at last night's Rules Committee meeting when he suggested that treating female-related health conditions was comparable to insurance-company imposed restrictions on smokers.

"Why should a woman pay more than a man?" asked New Jersey Democrat Frank Pallone, according to the Courthouse News Service.

"Well, we're all different," Sessions explained. "Why should a smoker pay more?" he said before interrupted.

That prompted major pushback from Democrats, who say that it proves that House Republicans don't care about working-class women.

“The NRCC and extreme right wing of the Republican Party are totally out of step with women," said Jennifer Crider, spokeswoman for the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee.

"First, the NRCC says that a man ought to put the first woman Speaker of the House ‘in her place.' ...I don't know what's scarier, whether NRCC Chairman Pete Sessions actually believes women are second class citizens or whether he believes it's political beneficial for the NRCC to say so."

Westboro Baptist Church Sets Their Eyes On Obama's Girls. Guyz, Is Time for Justifiable Homicide...

Westboro Baptist Church Protests Outside Obama Girls' School

Westboro Baptist Church, a hate group that travels around the country holding anti-gay rallies, protested outside the school attended by President Obama's children on Monday morning.

The "church," run by Fred Phelps and composed largely of his extensive family, is known for staging its events for maximum publicity and controversy. In the past, members have demonstrated outside troops' funerals. Recently they have been targeting Jewish temples. Now they're aiming their vitriol at Washington-area schools -- including Sidwell Friends, where Malia and Sasha Obama are students.

A message on Westboro's website refers to the Obama children as "satanic spawn" of a "murderous bastard." Along with various schools, the church is also protesting outside the White House, the World War II memorial, and the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission field office.

Via ThinkProgress, one of the attendees (and Phelps' granddaughter) posted a picture of the protest on Twitter:

Protesters were carrying signs with anti-gay, anti-abortion and anti-Obama slogans, slowing down traffic all along Wisconsin Avenue.

Malia attends the Washington, D.C. Sidwell middle school, where the Phelps family protested Monday; they plan to protest Tuesday at the Bethesda location, where Sasha is a student.

Reid Challenger Feels Backlash After Questioning Assassination Attempt

Sue Lowden's campaign to unseat Senate Majority Leader Sen. Harry Reid (D-Nev.) in his 2010 re-election bid took a nosedive when she laughed about an assassination attempt against Reid.

But Lowden's boomlet burst when she appeared recently on a conservative radio talk show and snickered about the veracity of a 1981 incident in which a bomb was found under the Reid family's station wagon.

NOM to New Jersey: We're Coming For You, Garden State Gays

Fresh off its victory in Maine, where it helped rape away the marriage rights of gays and lesbians there, the National Organization for Marriage confirms what we all expected: It's taking its Church-backed dollars to New Jersey.

With same-sex marriage suddenly a top priority in Jersey — with supporter Gov. Jon Corzine, seen here signing the civil unions law in 2006, leaving office in January to make room for bigot Chris Christie — NOM indicates it's going to put the state next on its hit list.

NOM president Maggie Gallagher, most recently seen sympathizing with Maine's gays, says: "New Jersey is at the very top of our list, and it's going to happen in the next few weeks if it happens at all. They're doing it in a lame duck, because it's as far away from an election as possible."

While same-sex civil unions have been legal since 2006 in New Jersey, their recognition has been found to be unequal to marriage. And while a lame duck legislative session might be enough to get marriage equality on the agenda, it's unclear what NOM's strategy in Jersey will be, aside from encouraging supporters to phone legislators and lobby them to vote against it.

And pushing misinformation campaigns about teaching butt sex in schools.

I'm personally hoping Theresa pays her a visit..

Rep. Wasserman Schultz: Confident Stupak will not be in the final version of the bill

British citizens who have been forced into marriages overseas are being asked to cover the costs of their repatriation to the UK, The Independent has learnt.

The victims, many of whom will have been through violent and traumatic ordeals by the time they reach British officials, are being asked to cover the cost of their flights back to the UK, either out of their own pocket or by finding a friend who is willing to pay for them.

Under guidelines distributed by the Forced Marriage Unit to civil servants and diplomats abroad, victims who cannot find enough cash are even being asked to take out a low interest loan which will only be given to them if they surrender their passport until the loan is fully repaid.

The emergence of the guidelines comes just days after The Independent revealed that two of Britain’s most prominent charities working with victims of forced marriages have had their Government funding slashed. The Honour Network, which runs Britain’s only national helpline for forced marriage victims, and the Iranian and Kurdish Women’s Rights Organisation are now reliant on public donations and say they will have to begin cutting vital services unless more money can be found.

Opposition politicians last night attacked the repatriation methods as “heartless” and said that confiscating a victim’s passport until a loan was repaid was a tactic “reminiscent of those used by people traffickers.”

Baroness Warsi, the Conservative Party’s most senior Muslim politician, told The Independent last night: “Every forced marriage is a tragedy. These young people have already suffered enough. They have been betrayed by close friends and relatives, and now heartless ministers are asking them to pick up the bill for their rescue.”

LMAO forever~~

Carrie Prejean will finally get to enjoy some alone time tonight ... TMZ has learned the "biblically correct" crusader for "opposite marriage" has been mysteriously removed from an ultra-conservative event in NJ.

Carrie was all set to speak at an event called "Defenders of the Family" ... but after word got out that she sinned with herself in a solo sex tape, Carrie has since been removed from the schedule.

A spokesman for the New Jersey Family Policy Council wouldn't say if they canceled or if Carrie did... but Prejean was still a go just yesterday.

Attempts to reach Carrie's reps were unsuccessful.

In an interview with ABC News' Jake Tapper President Obama said he did not support any change in current abortion laws through the health care bill -- a implicit rebuke to the House for passing an amendment that could considerably restrict women's access to abortions. The president said that he doesn't want to change "the status quo" one way or another.

TAPPER: Here's a question a lot of Senate Democrats want to know. You said, when you gave your joint address to Congress, that under our plan, no federal dollars will be used to fund abortions. This amendment passed Saturday night which not only prohibits abortion coverage in the public option, but also prohibits women who receive subsidies from taking out plans that -- that provide abortion coverage. Does that meet the promise that you set out or does it over reach, does it go too far?

OBAMA: You know, I laid out a very simple principle, which is this is a health care bill, not an abortion bill. And we're not looking to change what is the principle that has been in place for a very long time, which is federal dollars are not used to subsidize abortions. And I want to make sure that the provision that emerges meets that test -- that we are not in some way sneaking in funding for abortions, but, on the other hand, that we're not restricting women's insurance choices, because one of the pledges I made in that same speech was to say that if you're happy and satisfied with the insurance that you have, that it's not going to change. So, you know, this is going to be a complex set of negotiations. I'm confident that we can actually arrive at this place where neither side feels that it's being betrayed. But it's going to take some time.

TAPPER: Do you think that amendment is status quo or does it lean a little bit in one direction or the other?

OBAMA: I think that there are strong feelings on both sides. And what that tells me is that there needs to be some more work before we get to the point where we're not changing the status quo. And that's the goal. The goal here is to make sure that people who have health insurance have greater stability and security, people who don't have health insurance get the ability to buy it affordably and that we're driving down costs.

And, you know, I think everybody understands that there's going to be work to be done on the Senate side. It's not going to match up perfectly with the House side. But obviously, it was a historic night for the House. We've never been this far. And I'm very confident that my colleagues in the Senate are going to say to themselves that we've got to get this done.

Number one killer of women in the world? AIDS

WHO: AIDS leading cause of death, disease in women (November 09, 2009 - Y! - AP - By BRADLEY S. KLAPPER)

GENEVA – In its first study of women's health around the globe, the World Health Organization said Monday that the AIDS virus is the leading cause of death and disease among women between the ages of 15 and 44.

Unsafe sex is the leading risk factor in developing countries for these women of childbearing age, with others including lack of access to contraceptives and iron deficiency, the WHO said. Throughout the world, one in five deaths among women in this age group is linked to unsafe sex, according to the U.N. agency.

Follow up to a vaccine illness story

Desiree Jennings "cured" of her "vaccine-induced dystonia"?

Remember how I promised that I'd do my next installment of my blogging Suzanne Somers' pile of idiocy, namely her own book, before the end of the week?

Plans change, and neurons melt, which they did in response to reading the first several chapters of Suzanne Somers' book.
Don't worry, though. I'll definitely try to get back on track with my--shall we say?--extended multipart review by Monday. Sometimes, though, when you're blogging, news drives what you do, and news is driving my decision to forego the pleasure and pain of the next installment of my "fun with Suzanne Somers" series, at least for a couple of days. What, you may ask, was so important that I delayed this most important project, a project that strikes home more than most, given that I treat breast cancer for a living?

It's the Desiree Jennings story again.

You remember Desiree Jennings? She's the young woman who received a seasonal flu vaccine in August and later developed what is being represented as dystonia but is almost certainly not. The other day, her VAERS database report was found, which casts even more doubt on her story, given that the neurologist who examined her when she presented concluded that there was a strong psychogenic component to whatever it was that was wrong with her. What has been brought to my attention is that, after promoting Jennings as evidence that the flu vaccine is harmful, deleting its page asking for donations for her, and then deciding to support her again, it looks as though Generation Rescue is going full mental jacket in supporting her again. Indeed, it looks as though GR has hooked Jennings up with a character I've discussed numerous times on this blog. More on that later. In the meantime, check out her website, where she tells her story and touting her "cure": Collapse )

UK kids think Hitler 'was German football coach'

LONDON — One in 20 British children think Adolf Hitler was Germany's national football coach, while six percent believe the Holocaust was a celebration at the end of World War II, according to a new poll.

One in five also mixed up Hitler's propaganda chief Joseph Goebbels with Anne Frank, the young Jewish girl who wrote a diary of her time hiding from the Nazis in an attic.

The results of the multiple choice poll, published by a war veterans' charity, reveal that while a majority of children have basic knowledge about the two world wars, a significant minority have no clue.

The survey of 2,000 children was published ahead of Remembrance Day on November 11, when many western nations celebrate the signing of the armistice that ended World War I.

Given a choice of answers, 77 percent of the children aged 9-15 recognised Hitler as leader of the Nazi party, but 13.5 percent thought he invented gravity in 1650 and seven percent thought he coached Germany's football team.

Likewise, 61 percent knew who Goebbels was but 21 percent thought he was a "well-known Jew who wrote a diary in the attic" -- and 14 percent thought he was Britain's defence secretary at the start of the World War II.

While 85 percent knew what the Holocaust was, six percent thought it was the celebration at the end of the war. Auschwitz was correctly identified by 70 percent -- but 15 percent thought it was a WWII based theme park.

A question about which country launched the first nuclear weapon caused some confusion. More than 41 percent knew it was the United States, but 31 percent said it was target country Japan, and 19 percent said it was Germany.

"Some of the answers to this poll have shocked us," said Major Jim Panton, chief executive of charity Erskine, adding: "Schoolchildren are the future of our country and it is important that we help them to learn about our history."

The full results of the survey can be seen on the charity's website at:
