hey what?

A little old but worth mentioning for discussion....

Catholic League Angered By Larry David Peeing On Jesus

On Sunday's 'Curb Your Enthusiasm,' Larry David was taking a "new pill" that caused him to urinate with excessive force. This caused a lot of splash back, some of which ended up on a Jesus painting hanging on the bathroom wall of his pious assistant, who later sees Jesus "crying" and assumes a miracle has taken place.

Catholics are not amused. Bill Donohue, president of the Catholic League, said in a statement:

Mention Larry David in a word association game and "Seinfeld" rolls off the lips. That show, which David created, wrote and produced, was brilliant. "Curb Your Enthusiasm" is not. Indeed, last night's episode demonstrates that David's best years are behind him. He ought to quit while he's ahead.

At one point in the show, David goes to the bathroom in a Catholic home and splatters urine on a picture of Jesus; he doesn't clean it off. Then a Catholic woman goes to the bathroom, sees the picture and concludes that Jesus is crying. She then summons her equally stupid mother and the two of them fall to their knees in prayer. When David and Jerry Seinfeld (playing himself) are asked if they ever experienced a miracle, David answers, "every erection is a miracle." That's what passes for creativity these days.

Was Larry David always this crude? Would he think it comedic if someone urinated on a picture of his mother? This might be fun to watch, but since HBO only likes to dump on Catholics (it was just a couple of weeks ago that Sarah Silverman insulted Catholics on "Real Time with Bill Maher"), and David is Jewish, we'll never know.

about a month old, but I don't remember any posting of it here and I saw the episode when it aired and didn't realize it caused a backlash that was worth noting.

Comics wank colliding with political wank: Like matter and anti-matter ...

I look forward to seeing the perfect storm of wank calm and rational debate that will ensue in the comments, between competing factions of both superhero comics fans and public policy ideologues.

Superman supports health care and welfare!

From back in the day when Superman used his moral force to say we should do this because it's the right thing to do for our neighbors, never mind if it cost us some tax dollars.

Of course, today he'd be attacked for his position because, after all, he's an illegal immigrant.

And like so many other illegals, we just want him to clean up our messes and do the jobs we can't do for ourselves for non-existent pay, but that doesn't mean we have to acknowledge when he might have a point.

But I could be mistaken. Is there someone out there who can explain why Superman is wrong?

(Hat tip to Kevin H and Wesley Osam.)
This was originally posted online near the end of August, but I don't recall seeing it on this comm, so I thought I'd share it with you all.

Health Care Reform: Pro-choice Forces Win the First Round in the Senate

By Peggy Simpson

Senate Democrats held firm to allow debate to begin on a health care bill that avoids the abortion restrictions of the House-passed measure—and pro-choice activists are mobilizing to keep the heat on. But there are many hurdles ahead.

November 23, 2009

Everyone knew the import of the Saturday night Senate vote on health care.

Yes, it was historic in the sense it moved forward the first comprehensive health reform bill in decades, following House action a week earlier. That means weeks of debate will begin after the Thanksgiving break.

But for the feminist community, as well as the anti-abortion lobby, the vote also meant that the Senate bill would not contain the House-passed Stupak amendment, which would vastly extend the 1976 Hyde amendment banning federal funds for abortion. Anti-abortion Republican senators pleaded in vain for at least one Democrat to break ranks and block the health bill, to keep the Stupak amendment alive.

South Africa to fast-track World Cup crime hearings

"There is not going to be any leniency"

South Africa is to set up special courts to quickly deal with crime committed during the 2010 World Cup.

The government hopes the fast-track system will enable visitors to give evidence while still in the country and therefore act as a deterrent.

A total of 54 courts will operate in the nine World Cup host cities.

The justice ministry says if any foreigners are involved in crimes, as victims or perpetrators, their cases will receive priority.

South Africa is one of the world's most violent countries, but since President Jacob Zuma took office in May the government has made fighting crime a priority.

"The experience from previous host countries has shown the influx of foreign nationals in World Cups also potentially increases criminal activities," a statement from the justice ministry said.

Spokesman Tlali Tlali added: "The courts are here to speed up the process. There is not going to be any leniency."

- Ticket sales being what they are ? One more reason I don't think the fans will be turning up.

Philippines political violence leaves 21 dead

Twenty-one politicians and journalists who were abducted in the southern Philippines have been found dead.

The group was seized on the island of Mindanao by armed men as they tried to file nomination papers for a candidate in local elections next year.

More members of the group are missing, feared dead.

Elections in the Philippines are often marred by violence, particularly in the south, where clashes connected to local rivalries and insurgencies erupt.

The country is to hold nationwide elections in May 2010. Registration for local and national races began earlier this month.

Jesus Dureza, adviser to President Gloria Arroyo in the volatile Mindanao region, said it was "a gruesome massacre of civilians unequalled in recent history".

Twenty one journalists and politicians found murdered over a mayoral race? I can't fathom this.

Bill Nye the Science Guy

Obama pledges "We're going to show young people how cool science can be."

Today, President Obama kicked off the Educate to Innovate campaign. The goal is to increase participation and performance in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM).

The campaign will include partnering with the private sector (like Discovery Networks) to advance scientific literacy through multimedia, games, hands-on learning, and community volunteers.

In 2006, American students ranked 21st out of 30 in science literacy among students from developed countries, and 25th out of 30 in math literacy.

The partnerships launched today aim to change this with dramatic commitments in the hundreds of millions of dollars, generated through novel collaborations and creative outreach activities.

"It’s time that people who have made extraordinary achievements in science stand beside athletes and others honored at the White House."

Obama met with Adam and Jamie of MythBusters, joking "I hope you guys left the explosives at home." And the President announced the White House will start holding an annual Science Fair to showcase the best and the brightest students in America.

Scientific Sauce.

More at Bad Astronomy, including a cellphone snapshot showing Obama meeting with Adam and Jamie. Apparently they gave Obama a t-shirt, but I couldn't see what it said.

IDK about you guys but putting an emphasis back on science, math, and engineering makes me a happy geek.

Say "big deficit" one more time, motherfucker.

Gavin Newsom Throws Tantrum In First Interview Since Dropping Gov. Bid

San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom was irritable during a recent interview about the city's budget deficit, telling a reporter he was "disappointed" in the line of questioning.

It was his first sit-down with the press since he last month abruptly and without explanation dropped out of the race to be California's next governor.

In the Thursday interview, Newsom criticized CBS 5 political reporter Hank Plante, who asked about the mayor's recent travel schedule and unusual behavior since ending his political bid.

Newsom wanted to talk about San Francisco's $522 million budget deficit but ended up playing defense against Plante's questions. As he left the interview while the cameras were still rolling, he told Plante "off the record" he was disappointed.

Watch the interview to the end:

This whole interview feels Colbert Report-esque. just... so awkward. :| Not that we didn't know Newsom is a douchebag, a sexy manwhore of a douchebag but still.

blonde jokes sexism fun

I hate this article written by Peter Stanford so much, I just have to share the awfulness with everyone.

''IS IT the 'dumb blonde' hearing you're looking for, sir?'' someone asks as I wander the corridors of Victory House, home of the London Central Employment Tribunal. Just as he is pointing out the right door, a procession topped by various shades of blonde goes through it.

Cuba's government has offered its first free penis implants, part of a program set to be expanded across the communist island, an official newspaper reported Friday.

It is likely not what Karl Marx had in mind when he imagined a society transformed "from each according to his abilities, to each according to his needs," but Juventud Rebelde reported the silicon and silver penis implants are set to become more common.

Men in seven Cuban provinces will be eligible for the procedure, which urologist Juan Carlos Yip boasted was normally "exclusive to first world countries and at a high cost.

"It will be carried out in patients whose sexual suffering does not respond positively to traditional treatments."

Those over 40s and those with diabetes or circulation problems are set to be first in line the paper reported.

Texas Tribune Reports: Schieffer to Drop Out of Governor's Race

Breaking news from the Texas Tribune:
Democratic gubernatorial candidate Tom Schieffer is getting out of the race this afternoon, sources said Monday morning. "He just couldn't put it together," said one.
"I can't comment," said Clay Robison, Schieffer's spokesman. Schieffer didn't immediately return calls.
More as this develops.
There should be a press conference today at 3pm at the Texas Capitol.
Provided this is true -- and I don't think the Texas Tribune would break a story like this if it weren't true -- then Schieffer dropping out makes room in the Democratic primary field. Should he drop out, it would also free up a number of endorsements from Democrats who had previously pledged to support Schieffer.
Tom Schieffer entered the gubernatorial race in March, beginning a long conversation about the need for public education to improve in Texas. And while some Democrats were concerned about his candidacy, many others were proud of the way he aggressively traveled the state to talk to Texas Democrats about the immediate need to have a new Governor in Texas.
Zada True Courage, in an e-mail she sent out through Carl Whitmarsh' e-mail list back in August, summed up Schieffer's determination very well:
The guy's been running since March 2009 and he has been traveling around meeting with County Chairs and County Executive Committees. The last time I saw him in July, he was in Corupus, San Antonio, and Kendall County in less than 48 horus. For those who have never campaigned for office, I have to tell you this takes energy and some commitment!
Schieffer worked extremely hard as a candidate. I look forward to what he will say this afternoon, and ultimately I'm happy to have him back in Texas.
Update from the Schieffer Campaign:
Democratic gubernatorial candidate Tom Schieffer will have an important news conference at 3 p.m. today (Monday) in the Speaker's Committee Room at the state Capitol.

Oh. That's cool I guess. I hope it's so he can put all his heart and soul into campaigning for Bill White instead. Please, Bill White? Pretty please?

Mother of thirteen won't stop having kids until she has twins

A mum of 13 who costs taxpayers £50,000 a year has said she won't stop having kids until she gives birth to twins.

Baby machine Sara Foss, 39, is due to give birth to her 14th child in April but will try to get pregnant again as soon as possible to realise her dream.

The brazen mum said today: "All I've ever wanted is twins or triplets. It's my biggest wish, and I'm going to keep trying until I do it.

"It would be fantastic. In fact, I won't stop trying until I've done it. I love having babies - it's the most wonderful thing in the world."

Source has spent roughly 11 years pregnant

If you can afford to populate a small country on your own, that's one thing. When you are costing taxpayers an insane amount of money just because you "want twins," you need a class in personal responsibility, stat. Also, I did a quick conversion on the currency, and they get $82,000 a year from the government, and she spent approximately $8299 on Christmas presents, which boggles my mind.

ABC receives 1,500 complaints about Glambert performance, pics/vid & interview with Adam included

ABC says it has received complaints on Lambert

NEW YORK – ABC says more than 1,500 people have called to complain about Adam Lambert's sexually charged performance at the American Music Awards.

The network characterized the response as "moderate." Before his performance, Lambert said that he wanted to break down a double standard that existed where female performers are often sexually provocative while men don't do it that often.

There were also hostile comments online about the "American Idol" glam rocker who sang his new song "For Your Entertainment" on Sunday's show with an elaborate, S&M-themed production. Lambert fondled a dancer, led another around on a leash, had a dancer briefly stick his head in Lambert's crotch and kissed a man.

I sent off a comment about the show to ABC - I'm only pissed over the censoring - but I might call if I can find the number. I loved how ballsy ABC was. In LBGT's in television they are really breaking ground and making it more common and less of an issue.

I found other articles and it seems ABC censored us I don't recall a guy/guy kiss or the bird.

Abused by their own children

Threatened with a knife by a 14-year-old girl - it could be a disturbing headline from any national newspaper. But what if it happened in your own home and the teenager wielding the weapon was your own daughter?

Parents are regularly being threatened, abused, even beaten up by their own children, says a UK parental guidance charity. Many have reached the point where they are afraid to be left alone in the house with them.

New figures from Parentline Plus reveal its helpline received three calls a day on average last year from parents suffering verbal or physical abuse. For some it has been going on for years. (See box, right, for the story of one threatened mother.)

It says such aggression is more common than people think, but many parents don't ask for help because they feel ashamed.

Belle de Jour and the myth of the happy hooker

For several years, the true identity of Belle de Jour, author of a blog called Diary of a London Call Girl, had been a mystery. Journalists, always excited by mysteries, strove to find out who she really was. Was she really a woman at all?

Experienced male journalists who could do sentences with three clauses in them speculated that she might be a male journalist because of her unusual literary skills.

When Belle de Jour's daintily scurrilous blog was collected into a hit book, several critics noted that she had a command of language comparable to that of Martin Amis. Perhaps Belle de Jour was really Salman Rushdie. Surely no mere female could concoct a diary so exactly fulfilling male fantasies.

When the book was turned into a television series, Billie Piper was up there on screen like Catherine Deneuve in the art-house movie from which our blogger, knowledgeable about art-house movies, had lifted her, or his, name.

The Catherine Deneuve movie was the story of a refined woman answering her imaginative needs by spending her afternoons in a bordello, taking on all comers, but never chipping her nail polish.

In the blog of our latter-day Belle de Jour, that was the soignee image that the author strove to project. In the TV series, as Billie Piper delicately primped, it looked very like a male's imaginative needs being fulfilled. But finally, last weekend, Belle de Jour stood revealed as a female after all.

7 Popular 'Chick Flicks' That Secretly Hate Women

Hollywood filmmakers like their women like they like their coffee: shrill, stupid and submissive. And usually not black.

As evidence, all you need to do is look at the "romantic" movies which are targeted toward women, yet somehow embrace every negative assumption about females that males have ever dreamed up.

Moar Black Wimminz Need To Git Down With the Swirl!

For what seems like forever, I have waited for The Princess and the Frog. This is the first Disney animated film about an African-American princess, and this delightful fairy tale couldn't come at a better time, what with the two little African-American princesses who live in the White House. The newest Disney royal is named Tiana, and she's a young woman with pools for eyes, a figure straight out of a fashion magazine, and a big dream. Tiana wants to own a restaurant—she makes a mean beignet—but she's so busy working to save money for it that she barely notices when a prince comes to her corner of 1920s New Orleans. Like every Disney prince, Naveen seems completely unattainable, though for reasons that have less to do with his station or his dreamy French accent than with our own, more modern concerns. Prince Naveen has a tannish complexion, but he clearly isn't African-American. My fear is that for many in the black community, the fairy tale may just end right there.

And I present to you a winning comment from the source:

As a white male, I sympathize with black females who see their men shacking up with white females, I find it equally repulsive and irritating. Though my one consolation is that nearly every single black-white couple I see involves a white female that either dresses like a whore or looks like trailer trash.

As the saying goes, once you go black - we don't want you back.

A GOP purity test?

First Read has obtained a resoultion being e-mailed around to Republican National Committee members for comments that proposes a conservative litmus test of sorts.

This comes on the heels of a rift in the party that was exposed in the once-obscure special election in Upstate New York's 23rd Congressional District, in which national conservative leaders, including Sarah Palin, clashed with national establishment Republicans. The so-called GOP civil war threatens to derail moderate Republican candidacies in heated 2010 Republican primaries already underway. Florida's Senate race is perhaps the best and most prominent example.

World-famous doll gets a makeover to go under the hammer for 50th anniversary

One of the world's most famous children's toys, Barbie, has been given a makeover - wearing a burkha.

Wearing the traditional Islamic dress, the iconic doll is going undercover for a charity auction in connection with Sotheby's for Save The Children.

More than 500 Barbies went on show yesterday at the Salone dei Cinquecento, in Florence, Italy.

Makers Mattel are backing the exhibition which is the work of Italian designer Eliana Lorena.

The auction is part of Barbie celebrations for her 50th anniversary this year. The UK's biggest Barbie fan Angela Ellis, 35, has a collection of more than 250 dolls.

The company director of Laird Assessors from The Wirral, Cheshire, said: 'Bring it on Burkha Barbie, I think this is a great idea.

'I think this is really important for girls, wherever they are from they should have the opportunity to play with a Barbie that they feel represents them.

'I know Barbie was something seen as bad before as an image for girls, but in actual fact the message with Barbie for women is you can be whatever you want to be.

'I have a Barbie in a wheelchair that was only out for six weeks.'

The mum-of-two's own Barbie collection is set to be displayed at London's Victoria and Albert Museum in 2012.

Barbie was first launched in March 1959 by American businesswoman Ruth Handler. The doll was joined by her long-term boyfriend Ken in 1961.

Rosie Shannon, from Save the Children, said all the proceeds from the auction will go to the charity.

She said: 'We are delighted Sotheby's and the designer chose to auction the burka Barbie dolls for our charity.'

The money will go towards the Rewrite the Future campaign which helps millions of children around the world effected by conflict.

Tea Party Mocks Tragedy: "Better Death Than Red!"

Tea Party Patriots Attack Family Who Lost Daughter And Grandchild (VIDEO)

A group called the Chicago Tea Party Patriots publicly heckled a grieving family and
suggested that the couple fabricated their tragic story.

At a town hall held by Rep. Dan Lipinski (D-Ill.) on Nov. 14,, Dan and Midge Hough spoke about how they believed the death of their daughter-in-law and her unborn child were caused, in part, by a lack of health insurance. Twenty-four-year old Jennifer was uninsured. According to her in-laws, she was not receiving regular prenatal care and was not properly treated when she got sick. She ended up in an emergency room with double pneumonia that developed into septic shock, had a heart attack, a brain bleed and a stroke. The baby died and Jennifer died a few weeks later.

Midge Hough was heckled by anti-reform crowd members. "You can laugh at me, that's okay," she said, crying. "But I lost two people, and I know you think that's funny, that's okay."

"Feral cat group making inroads on societal problem"

This brown tabby was No. 40,000 in the long, long line of feral cats neutered or spayed by the Feral Cat Coalition of Oregon.

The oddest feature of this cat clinic is its soundscape: A radio's playing quietly, a few volunteers chat, green-clad surgeons ask for their instruments in hushed tones -- but only one kitten meows.

One soft, mournful meow from a bottom shelf. Even though the shelves are loaded with 74 untamed felines in cloth-draped wire cages. Six dozen house cats would be screaming up a storm right now, but these feral cats are quiet.

One little guy -- a 3-month-old brown tabby -- eyes the humans gathered around his cage. He doesn't know he's a celebrity.

That little tabby is the 40,000th feline the Feral Cat Coalition of Oregon has spayed or neutered in its 14-year existence. Despite its small staff, the nonprofit is making a difference in Oregon's feral cat population because of community involvement: Seven employees direct a virtual army of volunteers.

U.K. Straight Couple Applies for Civil Partnership

By Christopher Mangum
Tom Freeman Katherine Doyle X180 (FAIR USE DIETER PERRY) | ADVOCATE.COM

Tom Freeman and Katherine Doyle hope to make history on Tuesday by becoming the first straight couple to apply for a civil partnership in the United Kingdom.

The pair expect to be turned down by the registrar due to the ban on opposite-sex civil partnerships, but they plan on appealing the refusal.

"If necessary, we are ready to take our appeal all the way to the European Court of Human Rights,"said Freeman and Doyle in a press release.

"Because we feel alienated from the patriarchal traditions of marriage, we would prefer to have a civil partnership. As a mixed-sex couple, we are banned by law from doing so,” explained Doyle in the couple’s statement. “By filing an application for civil partnership, we are seeking to challenge this discriminatory law.

The two 25 years-old civil servants also decided to apply for a civil partnership because of their disdain for the ban on marriage for same-sex couples.

"Our decision is also motivated by the fact that we object to the way same-sex couples are prohibited from getting married. If we got married we would be colluding with the segregation that exists in matrimonial law between gay civil partnerships and straight civil marriage," added Doyle.

Currently under U.K. law, same-sex couples are banned from civil marriage and heterosexual couples are banned from civil partnerships.
