Mr. T the Patriot

Ga. Elects Black Lesbian Lawmaker

Georgia voters made history Tuesday night by electing the first openly lesbian African-American state legislator in U.S. history.

Simone Bell, who won a runoff election to represent district 58 in the Atlanta area, will become the second openly LGBT member of the Georgia State Assembly, following Representative Karla Drenner, also from Atlanta.

“The historical aspect of this was never my goal. In fact, someone only brought that to my attention midway through the campaign,” Bell told The Advocate of the milestone. “But it does mean a lot to the communities, and it’s humbling that I stand on the shoulders of greatness.”

Bell’s win in a conservative state that passed a constitutional ban on gay marriage in 2006 has not gone unnoticed by national gay groups. “This is a tremendous victory for LGBT Georgians. Simone is a longtime leader in her community, and she will be a huge asset in the Georgia State House,” said president and CEO of the Gay & Lesbian Victory Fund, which supported Bell's campaign.

Despite the state’s conservative leanings, Bells said she saw no organized opposition or smear campaigns on her candidacy centered on her sexual orientation. “Our district is very diverse and progressive in a lot of different ways, so attacking an LGBT candidate in this way wouldn’t have run well in this particular district," she said.

As a state legislator, Bell said she would be focused on fighting further cuts in education and transportation in the state budget. Regarding LGBT issues, “We don’t have a lot of votes in the state legislature to do any progressive work, but in terms of being on the offense, I plan to work with the movable middle to work on making Georgia a better place" she said. "And I will fight hard against any legislation to take rights away from us on the basis of sexual orientation or gender identity.”

Also, Atlanta voters elected the city’s first gay man, and first Asian American, to the city council on Tuesday. Alex Wan, who was endorsed by the Victory Fund, will represent city council district 6.

Does being gay in Hollywood mean no leading roles?

I wouldn't advise any actor thinking of his career to come out
He had Hollywood at his feet at the age of 25. So why has Rupert Everett never lived up to that early promise? Here, the outspoken actor talks about homophobia, deranged A-listers and why Madonna isn't speaking to him

Rupert Everett. Photograph: Dean Chalkley

Can anyone look more world weary than Rupert Everett? At certain points in the interview, he gives the impression of having been in the acting game since at least the dawn of time, if not before. These are eyes that have seen it all – glittering success, abject failure, critical acclaim, the best reviews on earth, the worst. But then, at times, his career trajectory has resembled the cardiogram of a 60-a-day, overweight smoker: up, down, up, critical, dead, alive again! He was a star at 22, a has-been at 30, a Hollywood ingenue at 40, and here he is again, aged 50, still handsome, still game, gadding around in the new St Trinian's film in a made-to-measure girdle and a pair of false breasts.

Damascus Bus Bomb: 'Up To 12' Killed In Syria Explosion

DAMASCUS, Syria — Syria's interior minister said an explosion near a bus parked at a gas station in a Damascus suburb was an accident and three people were killed.

The minister, Said Mohammad Sammour, ruled out a terrorist attack in a statement to state-run Syrian TV. He said the Iranian bus driver and two Syrian gas station workers were killed when a tire they were pumping air into exploded.

An Associated Press photographer at the scene in the Sayyida Zainab suburb in southern Damascus saw a damaged bus, its back side gutted and charred, with several windows and the back windshield blown out.

Lebanese LBC TV broadcast footage showing the heavily damaged bus from the back, the part near the engine blown apart.

A local resident in the area said the explosion set off a fire, possibly from diesel that poured from the tank. He refused to give his name because he feared reprisal from Syrian authorities.

Another man who lives nearby, Mohammed al-Khalil, 54, said he heard a small explosion, about 6:30 GMT, and ran to see what had happened. He said he saw a man was thrown about 15 yards (meters) away from the blast.

Syrian TV quoted Sammour as saying "there were no explosives involved" in the accident. He added there were no pilgrims nearby when the explosion occurred.

The suburb is popular with Iranian and other Shiite pilgrims and is the location of a shrine dedicated to the granddaughter of the Prophet Muhammad.

Police sealed off the area and reporters were banned from reaching the site.

I'm not insane right? This is a cover up? A tire exploding doesn't cause a fire and a bus to be charred like that. For fucks sake do you know how much air you have to put into a tire to make it explode? I have a car and when I was younger I accidently put 75 psi into the tire that only needs 35psi. It didn't explode on me! I drove 30 miles home. No explosion. And even if there was an explosion it wouldn't cause my car to blow up.

Levi Johnston is doing gay porn.......sortof.

We're surprised it's taken this long, but gay porn studio Jet Set Productions is filming Getting Levi's Johnson this weekend. The biggest difference between this and Levi's Playgirl shoot? Well, there will actually be wang.

The role of Levi is played by relative porn new comer Casey (one name, like Liberace), who actually looks quite a bit like Johnston—they're both very pale, have silly tattoos, and have that handsome, vacant stare that makes us weak in the knees. The biggest difference is that Casey has been doing some serious crunches and is not afraid to show his peen to the camera unlike our boy Levi.

Chris Steele, the head honcho over at Jet Set, gave us a description of the movie, "It is a parody and the story follows our character Levi from his Fleshbot award, to his Peanut commercial, to his Vanity Flair photo shoot, flashes back to his days as a hockey player in Alaska and finally to his spread in Play Dude." The movie will be available in February or March. Of course we just feel bad for the real-life Levi: someone is already stealing his gay porn thunder.

America Without a Middle Class

Can you imagine an America without a strong middle class? If you can, would it still be America as we know it?

Today, one in five Americans is unemployed, underemployed or just plain out of work. One in nine families can't make the minimum payment on their credit cards. One in eight mortgages is in default or foreclosure. One in eight Americans is on food stamps. More than 120,000 families are filing for bankruptcy every month. The economic crisis has wiped more than $5 trillion from pensions and savings, has left family balance sheets upside down, and threatens to put ten million homeowners out on the street.

Families have survived the ups and downs of economic booms and busts for a long time, but the fall-behind during the busts has gotten worse while the surge-ahead during the booms has stalled out. In the boom of the 1960s, for example, median family income jumped by 33% (adjusted for inflation). But the boom of the 2000s resulted in an almost-imperceptible 1.6% increase for the typical family. While Wall Street executives and others who owned lots of stock celebrated how good the recovery was for them, middle class families were left empty-handed.

Will nobody think of the poor men? Also the comments in the opinion piece are sad.

Obama rejoining economic debate with jobs summit
By PHILIP ELLIOTT, Associated Press Writers Philip Elliott, Associated Press Writers – 14 mins ago

WASHINGTON – Under pressure from Republicans and a recession-weary public, President Barack Obama put the focus on jobs on Thursday by gathering local officials, economists, business and labor leaders at the White House to talk about putting people back to work.

The White House has lacked a unified economic message in recent weeks, with its attention focused instead on health care and Obama's three-month review of the Afghanistan war. With unemployment in double digits for the first time since the early 1980s, Democratic lawmakers are suggesting a second economic stimulus aimed directly at job creation may be needed.

Internet addiction linked to self harming among teens

This is interesting, although the link could be quite tenuous.

Internet addiction has been linked to double the normal levels of self harm among high school students, in a new study published this morning.

However the researchers say it is not clear that the addiction led to self-injury - both behaviours may be symptoms of a deeper problem, a lack of self control.

Jesus is a Liberal, Conservatives to re-write Bible

Conservative Bible Project Cuts Out Liberal Passages
The Huffington Post
Rachel Weine

Lo and behold, the Bible has gotten too liberal, according to a group of conservatives. And it needs a little editing.

That's the inspiration behind the Conservative Bible Project, which seeks to take the text back to its supposed right-wing roots.

Yes, even scripture is not orthodox enough for the modern conservative. Not that it's the fault of the author(s), exactly. The group cites a few reasons why the Bible is too progressive: "Lack of precision in the original language ... lack of precision in modern language" and "translation bias in converting the original language to the modern one."

So how can the Bible be conservatized? The group has proposed a Wikipedia-like group editing project. Some of the ideas would only bring the translation closer to the original. But others would fundamentally change the text.

1. Framework against Liberal Bias: providing a strong framework that enables a thought-for-thought translation without corruption by liberal bias

2. Not Emasculated: avoiding unisex, "gender inclusive" language, and other modern emasculation of Christianity
3. Not Dumbed Down: not dumbing down the reading level, or diluting the intellectual force and logic of Christianity; the NIV is written at only the 7th grade level[3]
4. Utilize Powerful Conservative Terms: using powerful new conservative terms as they develop;[4] defective translations use the word "comrade" three times as often as "volunteer"; similarly, updating words which have a change in meaning, such as "word", "peace", and "miracle".
5. Combat Harmful Addiction: combating addiction by using modern terms for it, such as "gamble" rather than "cast lots";[5] using modern political terms, such as "register" rather than "enroll" for the census
6. Accept the Logic of Hell: applying logic with its full force and effect, as in not denying or downplaying the very real existence of Hell or the Devil.
7. Express Free Market Parables; explaining the numerous economic parables with their full free-market meaning
8. Exclude Later-Inserted Liberal Passages: excluding the later-inserted liberal passages that are not authentic, such as the adulteress story
9. Credit Open-Mindedness of Disciples: crediting open-mindedness, often found in youngsters like the eyewitnesses Mark and John, the authors of two of the Gospels
10. Prefer Conciseness over Liberal Wordiness: preferring conciseness to the liberal style of high word-to-substance ratio; avoid compound negatives and unnecessary ambiguities; prefer concise, consistent use of the word "Lord" rather than "Jehovah" or "Yahweh" or "Lord God."

Among the words to be eliminated: "government." A conservative columnist at Beliefnet described the effort as "just crazy ... like what you'd get if you crossed the Jesus Seminar with the College Republican chapter at a rural institution of Bible learnin'."

There are no words :/

Even Conservative Jews Wants Obama To Fail

White House Chanukah Blues

We are now welcoming the first holiday season of President Barack Obama's administration. That means it's time to focus on what one GOP operative told me is the most important issue of the year for any Jewish organization in Washington, DC -- how many invitations can be had for the White House Chanukah party. Yes, more important than stopping Iranian nukes, of greater significance than working toward Middle East peace, and a higher priority than passing health care reform is the question of ... who gets to watch the lighting of the chanukia at the Obama's.

This is no joke! The Jerusalem Post ran an entire piece expressing criticism of the White House because Obama's first Chanukah party would not have as many invited guests as the last one under the auspices of President George W. Bush. According to the article, this reduction in invitations could be viewed as giving the "cold shoulder" to the community or even as a purposeful snub of Jewish Americans.

Spate of suicides by foreign maids in Lebanon sheds light on abuse

Spate of suicides by foreign maids in Lebanon sheds light on abuse

London, England (CNN) -- A recent spate of suicides by foreign maids in Lebanon is prompting outrage among human rights groups, who say the government is doing too little to protect migrant domestic workers from severe abuse.

Over the past seven weeks at least 10 women have died, either by hanging themselves or by falling from tall buildings. Six of these cases have been reported in local media as suicides and four more have been described as possible work accidents.

An Ethiopian woman working as a cleaner in Lebanon told CNN by phone that she was sad about the recent suicides, and that she had a friend who killed herself several years ago, when she too was working as a live-in maid.

"If the Madame maybe she is very bad, they feel there is no way, no solution," said the woman who asked not to be identified, referring to abuse by the female employer. "Everyone has a different case," though she added.

WWII vet fights homeowners group over Va. flagpole

Associated Press Writer

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

RICHMOND, Va. (AP) -- One of the nation's oldest Medal of Honor winners was back in the fight Thursday, this time against a neighborhood association that wants him to take down a front-yard flagpole.

Supporters, including a U.S. senator, have been falling in behind 90-year-old retired Army Col. Van T. Barfoot, a World War II veteran awarded the lofty Congressional honor for actions including standing up to three German tanks with a bazooka and stopping their advance.

Barfoot put up the 21-foot flagpole in September in front of his suburban Richmond home. He raises the American flag daily at sunrise and retires it at sunset.

"It's really ridiculous to want to keep the flag from being flown," he said in a telephone interview. "I've heard some terrible excuses out there."

The Sussex Square homeowners' association says the flagpole violates the neighborhood's aesthetic guidelines and ordered him to remove it by 5 p.m. Friday or face a lawsuit. The group has said Barfoot can display the flag, as long as it's in a way that conforms with association rules, such as from a pole mounted on the front of the house.

"This is not about the American flag. This is about a flagpole," the association said in a statement.

Sen. Mark R. Warner, D-Va., is among those offering to help break the impasse, Warner spokesman Kevin Hall said. Warner and the war hero became acquainted at veterans' events when Warner was Virginia's governor from 2002-06. Others are backing Barfoot on the Internet, including with a Facebook page.

Barfoot won the Medal of Honor for actions while his platoon was under German assault near Carano, Italy, in May 1944. The award citation says Barfoot, then a 2nd lieutenant, crept up alone on German machine gun nests, killing and capturing enemy troops in three of them, stopped their three-tank advance and helped two seriously wounded comrades back to safety.

He also won the Purple Heart and other decorations, and served in Korea and Vietnam before retiring from the service in 1974. The Sitter & Barfoot Veterans Care Center, a state nursing home for military retirees in Richmond, bears his name.

Barfoot's daughter, Margaret Nicholls, said her father has been moved to tears by the outpouring of support, and hopes the nine-member homeowners' board will use its discretion and let him keep the pole.

"A house-mounted pole? That is not an option," Nicholls said. "The flagpole is definitely what he's fighting for."

A new chance for Bolivia

Bolivia holds key to electric car future

High in the Andes, in a remote corner of Bolivia, lies more than half the world's reserves of a mineral that could radically reduce our reliance on dwindling fossil fuels.

Lithium carries a great promise. It could help power the fuel efficient electric or petrol-electric hybrid vehicles of the future.

But, as is the case with fossil fuels, it is a limited resource.

Lithium carbonate is already in the batteries of laptop computers and mobile phones.

It is used because it allows more energy to be stored in a lighter, smaller space than most alternatives.

And as the auto industry rushes to produce new fuel efficient and electric cars, it too is turning to lithium batteries as its first choice to boost the power of their new models.

GM has one in its new hybrid Volt, Toyota is testing one in its next generation hybrid Prius. Mercedes is testing an electric version of its Smart, while BMW is doing the same with its Mini.

And Nissan-Renault, Mitsubishi and VW are all rushing to buy or produce enough of the batteries to power their future models.

The best of the pure electric cars can reach ranges of more than 150 kilometres per charge.

More is needed

But there is a problem.

Mitsubishi, which plans to release its own electric car soon, estimates that the demand for lithium will outstrip supply in less than 10 years unless new sources are found.

And they have ended up in Bolivia.

"The demand for lithium won't double but increase by five times," according to Eichi Maeyama Mitsubishi's general manager in La Paz.

"We will need more lithium sources - and 50% of the world's reserves of lithium exist in Bolivia, in the Salar de Uyuni," he adds, pointing out that without new production, the price of lithium will rise prohibitively.

Collapse )

Energy Source

I'm really happy about that and I think it's the right decision of Morales not to get foreign companies to do the lithium harvest, even though it might be quicker. Bolivia is so poor and really deserves that chance to grow economically and independently. I just hope it won't strain their beautiful environment too much. @_@

Let's have some fun this beat is sick, Sanders hates Bernanke and Bunning is still a dick.

Bernie Sanders Moves To Block Ben Bernanke's Confirmation

Irked by the Federal Reserve's bailout of Wall Street, Sen. Bernie Sanders of Vermont said Wednesday that he will seek to block the Senate from confirming Ben Bernanke to a second term as chairman of the nation's central bank.

For now, the move isn't expected to derail Bernanke's confirmation, but it could slow down the process.

The maneuver by Sanders, an independent, comes on the eve of Bernanke's confirmation hearing before the Senate Banking Committee.

"The American people are disgusted with the greed and recklessness of Wall Street .... People are asking why didn't the Fed intervene at the appropriate time to stop the casino-type activities of large financial companies," Sanders said in an interview with The Associated Press.

Democrat Tells GOP Tea Party is Bad For Them. GOP Suspects a Lie.

Tim Kaine: 'The Tea Party Movement Is Savaging The GOP' (VIDEO)

On Thursday afternoon, DNC Chairman Tim Kaine said the tea party movement had done his rival party no good.

"The tea party movement is savaging the GOP," Kaine said at the 11th annual American Democracy Conference in Virginia. "It is something that we expect to see going forward."

To make his case, Kaine pointed to Sen. Arlen Specter's (D-Pa.) realignment with Democrats and the outcome of the special election in New York's 23rd district. The DNC Chairman suggested that Rep. Bill Owens' (D-N.Y.) victory in the race is a good indicator of what can be expected after future Republican primaries.

Kaine acknowledged that the "headwind" may be against his party in the 2010 midterm elections, but he argued that the wedge being driven in the GOP will ultimately prove to be catastrophic for its coalition.

"On the Republican side, we see a party that is narrowing geographically, narrowing ideologically and narrowing demographically," Kaine said. "There is a corrosive and consistent fight within the tea bag party."

Via Politico comes video of Kaine's speech.

Rush Limbaugh Discovers Reason Why Obama Wants To Kill Old People. They Voted Reagan.

Limbaugh: Left Using Health Care Reform To Kill Off Elderly Like Mao And Stalin (VIDEO)

Rush Limbaugh got very excited on his show today because he believes he's finally divined the real reason that Democrats are trying to reform health care. They want to kill off the elderly, just like Mao and Stalin did, because senior citizens vote and remember Reagan and really it just goes off the rails from there. Here's a sample quote:

Who are we targeting in health care? Old people. Rationing the care of old people...

And then it hit me....What's the first thing Mao se Tung did? What was the cultural revolution? He took out the educated people. He took out people who had a cultural, historical memory of China's past.

This conspiracy theory is worthy of Glenn Beck.

Wow. Lou Dobbs, putative presidential candidate, just can’t catch a break.

An anti-immigrant group is now making it official: It’s pulling its support for Dobbs and his presidential run, in the wake of Dobbs’ recent claim that he in fact supports a path to legalization for undocumented workers, saying that Dobbs “deeply offended his base.”

Previously, Dobbs had spent years blasting “amnesty” for illegals and trafficking in other anti-immigrant sentiment, prompting the long-running campaign to oust him from CNN. In a recent interview with Telemundo, however, he surprised a lot of observers by declaring he’d always been supportive of a route to legalization.

Lebanon's hidden problem of domestic abuse

Collapse )

"We brought together a group of women, gave them very simple digital cameras and my job was to teach them basics of photography," says photographer Dalia Khamissy. "I never expected that the final product would be so extraordinary," she adds. "The photos are good because these women have so much to say." Women say taking photos helped them to learn how to live with horrors of what they gone through, and the organisers of the exhibit hope that by exhibiting their work they will get the rest of the country to listen to their stories.

Domestic violence is a huge problem all across the Arab world. It's also a huge taboo and accurate statistics are not available. However, campaigners estimate that at least three quarters of Lebanese women experience domestic abuse at some point in their lives.

"On the outside Lebanon seems like a very liberal place. Women here party, many dress as they like, they work. But if you dig deeper and if you look at the issue of marriage, women have no rights," says Ghida Anani, programmes coordinator at KAFA, a non-governmental organisation behind the photography workshop.

The biggest problem according to Ms Anani is that domestic violence is not even part of the Lebanese penal code and marital rape is legalized. In those rare situations when domestic violence cases make it to court, they are referred to religious or so-called 'family courts', where laws often date back to the Ottoman era and where judges almost always favour men. "There are thousands of women in this country who have no one to turn to, " says Ghida Anani.

This may begin to change, if the Lebanese parliament votes in favour of a new legislation drafted by a group of non-governmental organisations. Campaigners say the biggest hurdle is already behind them - it took months to get all of religious leaders in Lebanon's multi-confessional system to signed off on the draft legislation. If adopted the law would be the first of the kind in the Middle East. And not only it would give civil courts the jurisdiction to deal with domestic violence cases, but it would also allow for creation of special law enforcement units that deal with the issue.

"We need it," says Dalal, another photographer from the Behind the Doors show.

Dalal's husband beat and assaulted her every day, until she finally ran away from him. But he tracked her down and kidnapped her three daughters. She has heard that they have been beaten and raped, but she has not seen the girls in years.

For years, she says, police has refused to help her.

Sex abuse church elder McConaghy 'too fat for jail'

A 66-year-old church elder convicted of indecently assaulting a child will not be sent to jail because his obesity means his health is "precarious".

John William McConaghy, from Urbal Road, Dervock, County Antrim, was found guilty of indecent assault.
Judge David Smyth at Antrim Crown Court suspended a two-and-a-half year term.

He said McConaghy's lack of mobility, ulcerated legs and need for frequent dressings amounted to "wholly exceptional circumstances".

The jail term was suspended for three years and a £10,000 fine was also imposed.

During a 10-day trial in October McConaghy's victim, who is now 44, said she was indecently assaulted from the age of around 10 until she was 18.

'Not happy'

She said that she was assaulted so often it became "the norm". She said McConaghey's abuse "petered out" as she reached adulthood and struck back at him, scratching his face as she fought him off. Speaking after the sentencing the woman said was "not happy" he was freed, but nevertheless understood the reason why.

"I am happy with the sentence he got, I think that was a fair sentence, but I am not happy with the suspension of it, but I understand the reason for it on medical grounds."

She added that she was glad she had pursued the case against him, "because everybody now knows, church elder or not, what he is".

Corpulent source

Mhm...if I were in her shoes I doubt I would have taken this so lightly. Plus when I was searching for this article in English (as I first discovered it in a German online newspaper) and googled "too fat for jail" there was a surprising number of results from all over the world. IMO the governments/counties should try to solve the logistic problems of their prisons to avoid awkward sentences like this.

famous amnesiac's brain being sectioned live online

H.M. recollected
Famous amnesic launches a bold, new brain project at UCSD

As best he could remember, Henry Gustav Molaison never visited San Diego, spending his entire life on the East Coast. When he died late last year at the age of 82, Molaison was a man almost entirely unknown except by his initials H.M. and the fact that experimental brain surgery had erased his ability to form new memories.

He forgot names, places, events and faces almost immediately. Half an hour after lunch, he couldn’t recall what he had eaten, or that he had eaten at all. His face in the mirror was a constant surprise because he remembered only what he looked like as a young man. Every question was new, even those asked just minutes before.

Yet Molaison bore this strange and unimaginable burden with grace and stoicism, allowing scores of scientists to study, probe and ponder his condition for decades, each seeking to better understand the mysteries of the human brain, memory and personal identity.

“H.M. started a revolution in the study of memory,” said Dr. Vilayanur S. Ramachandran, a professor of psychology and neuroscience and director of the Center for Brain and Cognition at UCSD at the time of Molaison’s death. “His was an unforgettable contribution.”

Molaison died of respiratory failure on Dec. 2, 2008, but his story — and his legacy — does not end in that Connecticut nursing home. Within hours of death, Molaison’s brain would be scanned, removed and placed in the preservative formalin, the first steps on a journey to San Diego and a new kind of immortality.

13-Year-Old Girl Commits Suicide After Classmates Spread Nude Photos

Trigger Warning for discussions of suicide, descriptions of non-consensual sexual conduct, victim-blaming and slut-shaming

The Tampa Bay St. Petersburg Times has printed the truly gut-wrenching, tragic story of a 13-year-old girl named Hope Witsell, who committed suicide after a photograph of her breasts, which she sent to a boy’s cell phone, was forwarded all over the school.
At the end of the school year at Beth Shields Middle School, the taunting became so bad that Hope Witsell’s friends surrounded her between classes. They escorted her down hallways like human shields, fending off insults such as “whore” and “slut.” A few days before, Hope had forwarded a nude photo of herself to a boy she liked — a practice widely known as “sexting.” The image found its way to other students, who forwarded it to their friends. Soon the nude photo was circulating through cell phones at Shields Middle and Lennard High School, according to multiple students at both schools. … School authorities learned of the nude photo around the end of the school year and suspended Hope for the first week of eighth grade, which started in August. About two weeks after she returned to school, a counselor observed cuts on Hope’s legs and had her sign a “no-harm” contract, in which Hope agreed to tell an adult if she felt inclined to hurt herself, her family says. The next day, Hope hanged herself in her bedroom. She was 13.

Her death is the second in the nation in which a connection between sexting and teen suicide can clearly be drawn.
I recommend that you go read the full article, because despite the many problems with it, there is a lot of information there, some of which I will not have the time to discuss here.

Run Bill run!

Poll: Lincoln in Trouble For Re-Election, Threatened By Halter Primary

A new Research 2000 poll commissioned by Daily Kos shows that Blanche Lincoln is not only vulnerable to a general election loss, but extremely vulnerable to a potential primary challenge from Lt. Governor Bill Halter.

The poll, with a margin of error of 4%, shows Lincoln with a 41/50 favorable/unfavorable rating, as opposed to Halter, who has a 36/25 rating with high undecideds, meaning he has some room to build on. The potential Republican challengers for Lincoln are all unknown as well.

Lincoln leads those Republicans but the margin is close. She’s up 42-41 on Gilbert Baker, 44-39 on Curtis Coleman, 45-31 on Tom Cox and 46-30 on Kim Hedren. This is much better for Lincoln than that disastrous Rasmussen poll from today, which showed her trailing all four challengers and not above 41% in any matchup. However, she’s still under 50% against everyone.

Halter trails Baker (42-34) and Coleman (40-35) but leads Cox (36-32) and Hedren (36-31), with high undecideds in all of those races.

Palin: Obama birth certificate 'a fair question'

Speaking to the conservative talker Rusty Humphries today, Sarah Palin left the door open to speculation about President Obama's birth certificate.

"Would you make the birth certificate an issue if you ran?" she was asked (around 9 minutes into the video above).

"I think the public rightfully is still making it an issue. I don't have a problem with that. I don't know if I would have to bother to make it an issue, because I think that members of the electorate still want answers," she replied.

"Do you think it's a fair question to be looking at?" Humphries persisted.

"I think it's a fair question, just like I think past association and past voting records -- all of that is fair game," Palin said. "The McCain-Palin campaign didn't do a good enough job in that area."

McCain's campaign counsel has said the campaign did look into the birth certificate question and, like every other serious examination, dismissed it.

Palin suggested that the questions were fair play because of "the weird conspiracy theory freaky thing that people talk about that Trig isn't my real son -- 'You need to produce his birth certificate, you need to prove that he's your kid,' which we have done."

"Maybe we can reverse that," she said, returning to Obama's birth certificate, describing the type of thinking involved with a word that isn't clear in the audio.

I officially no longer pity her for putting up with the "BUT WHO WAS REAL MOTHER" Trig Truthers. Two wrongs don't make a right, shithead.

ETA: Palin backpedals.

Voters have every right to ask candidates for information if they so choose. I’ve pointed out that it was seemingly fair game during the 2008 election for many on the left to badger my doctor and lawyer for proof that Trig is in fact my child. Conspiracy-minded reporters and voters had a right to ask... which they have repeatedly. But at no point – not during the campaign, and not during recent interviews – have I asked the president to produce his birth certificate or suggested that he was not born in the United States.

Tea Party: The Movie.

Tea Party Movie Premieres With Congressional GOP In Attendance (VIDEO)

Tea Party activists got to play the part of the glitterati Wednesday night at the Ronald Reagan building in Washington, DC, where FreedomWorks debuted "Tea Party: The Documentary Film" (a title distinguishing it, I suppose, from "Tea Party: The Three Act Drag Revue" and "My Little Pony Live! The World's Biggest Tea Party") to a crowd of activists, filmmakers, and, of course, the Washington Independent's Dave Weigel.

The stars of the film relaxed and talked with former House Majority Leader and FreedomWorks Chairman Dick Armey and Sen. Jim DeMint (R-S.C.). Rep. Joe Wilson (R-S.C.) handed out business cards to a steady stream of well-wishers. All of the guests made their way into the auditorium on the FreedomWorks version of a red carpet -- a strip of green astroturf.

The most significant attendees, however, were various and sundry congressional Republicans, which included -- in addition to DeMint and Wilson -- Representatives Marsha Blackburn (R-Tenn.) and Tom Price (R-Ga.):

Price, the sponsor of a resolution paying tribute to the 9/12 march, credited Tea Party activists with giving Republicans "the courage to do what we need to do." After his short remarks, he asked more than a dozen activists to join him onstage to accept framed copies of the resolution, which has been sponsored by 148 members of the Republican conference but has not come up for a vote.

Price's efforts were not merely symbolic. All across the electoral landscape, self-styled Tea Party candidates are springing up, and they're drawing down on GOP incumbents. ThinkProgress' Lee Fang offered up a run-down of the potential matchups. Some of the more significant highlights include:
