DeMint Suffers From Amnesia. Asks Libural Media to Stop Lying...

DeMint Lies: ‘I Did Not Want’ Health Care ‘To Be The President’s Waterloo’

Last summer during the peak of the health care reform debate in Congress, Sen. Jim DeMint (R-SC) claimed that if Republicans are “able to stop” President Obama’s push for health care reform, “it will be his Waterloo.” “It will break him,” DeMint said.

Today, during an interview with DeMint on ABC’s This Week, host Terry Moran aired audio of the quote and asked if it was appropriate to call for breaking the president. DeMint responded by lying, issuing an outright denial that he ever made the statement:
MORAN: So did you break him? And is that really how Americans want you to behave here in Washington, break the president? […]

DEMINT: I did not want this to be the President’s Waterloo. But pushing through a massive government take over of our health care system was certainly not a good idea. … We’ve been as Republicans pushing health care reform for years.
Later in the segment, Sen. Robert Menendez (D-NJ) called DeMint out:
MENENDEZ: Well Terry, my good friend Jim DeMint did want to break Barack Obama and the Republican whole political strategy is for this president and this Congress to fail. The sad thing about that it’s not about Barack Obama failing or Democrats in Congress failing, it’s about the country failing at one of the most critical challenges the country has had.
Watch it:

Of course Menendez is right. The GOP strategy on health care has simply been to obstruct, delay, and kill reform.

Back in September, DeMint was proud of his “Waterloo” comment. “If we lose the health care battle, I think we’ve lost it all,” he said, adding, “And that’s why I’ve said strong things like Waterloo and other things. … [I]f we stop him on health care then I think we have the opportunity to maybe realign the whole political system in our country.”

The woman Democrats need

ON THE day after Tuesday’s electoral loss, the Obama administration brought an unfamiliar face to the White House - Elizabeth Warren, the Harvard Law professor noted for her staunch advocacy on behalf the middle class and fierce criticism of the bank bailouts
. Perhaps the administration will take a more aggressive approach to Wall Street, along the lines of what Warren wants. But for Democrats to truly take ownership of the economic crisis, Warren will need to play a more prominent role. Not just her ideas, but the force of her personality is needed.

Warren and the Democratic Party need to think seriously about her prospects for higher office. Going into 2012, Massachusetts Democrats will have no shortage of candidates to choose from, eager, party-trained politicians ready to take a run. Republican Scott Brown’s victory to the US Senate last week made clear that voters crave something besides the norm: someone from outside the traditional political structure who can speak to their everyday, bread-and-butter concerns in a credible way. Warren fits the bill.

Sources: John Edwards Has a Sex Tape

Sources have told us that, in the throes of their affair, John Edwards and Rielle Hunter made a sex tape that contains "several sex acts." And that his aide, Andrew Young found it on an unmarked DVD.

The tape, say both our sources, is explicit and reveals that Edwards "is physically very striking, in a certain area. Everyone who sees it says 'whoa'. She's behind the camera at first."

When rumors of the affair first broke Young was so loyal to Edwards that he pretended that he was the father of Hunter's daughter Frances Quinn, now 2. But part of Young's disillusionment with the 2004 vice presidential candidate and 2008 candidate came one day as he went through a stack of DVDs at Rielle Hunter's house.

Ron Paul's Statement in Opposition to H Res 1021, Condolences to Haiti

Statement of Congressman Ron Paul
United States House of Representatives
Statement in Opposition to H Res 1021, Condolences to Haiti
January 21, 2010

I rise in reluctant opposition to this resolution. Certainly I am moved by the horrific destruction in Haiti and would without hesitation express condolences to those who have suffered and continue to suffer. As a medical doctor, I have through my career worked to alleviate the pain and suffering of others. Unfortunately, however, this resolution does not simply express our condolences, but rather it commits the US government "to begin the reconstruction of Haiti" and affirms that "the recovery and long-term needs of Haiti will require a sustained commitment by the United States. . . ." I do not believe that a resolution expressing our deep regret and sorrow over this tragedy should be used to commit the United States to a "long-term" occupation of Haiti during which time the US government will provide for the reconstruction of that country.

I am concerned over the possibility of an open-ended US military occupation of Haiti and this legislation does nothing to alleviate my concerns. On the contrary, when this resolution refers to the need for a long term US plan for Haiti, I see a return to the failed attempts by the Clinton and Bush Administrations to establish Haiti as an American protectorate. Already we are seeing many argue that this kind of humanitarian mission is a perfect fit for the US military. I do not agree.

Certainly I would support and encourage the efforts of the American people to help the people of Haiti at this tragic time. I believe that the American people are very generous on their own and fear that a US government commitment to reconstruct Haiti may actually discourage private contributions. Mr. Speaker, already we see private US citizens and corporations raising millions of dollars for relief and reconstruction of Haiti. I do not believe the US government should get in the way of these laudable efforts. I do express my condolences but I unfortunately must urge my colleagues to vote against this resolution committing the United States government to rebuild Haiti.

Another Disturbing Example of Cyberbullying Gone Too Far

Bullying may have led to death of S. Hadley student

Phoebe Prince’s lilting Irish accent and wide smile made the 15-year-old freshman stand out at South Hadley High School, where she enrolled last fall after her family relocated from a tiny village in the west of Ireland.

Her principal called her smart and charming. A boy invited the new girl to the school’s winter cotillion, a highlight of the school year. But two days before the Jan. 16 dance, Prince died in an apparent suicide, after incessant bullying by classmates at the 700-student high school.

Mother vows to fight for law change over death of unborn child

This is from Victoria, Australia, I found it sad, but also it made me wonder about how laws worldwide deal with unborn children. Should they change the law to recognise them as people if they are killed unlawfully?

I don't know how other nations deal with this at all.

However popular among the proles, the question is it would count as an abridgment on free-speech. In any event, "Business Should Mind Its Own Business" is fun to say. [HR 4431 IH]

Another bang up job from the Daily Fail.

Land of the living dolls: Feminism has spawned a promiscuous generation who believe their bodies are the only passport to success.

Aspiring night in the Mayhem nightclub in Southend. About a dozen girls, all in tiny hotpants and towering wedge heels, with dark fake tans and shiny, straightened hair, made their way over to a group of men who were standing by a large, empty bed.

The men's job was to choose who should enter a Babes On The Bed competition.

Of the hundreds of women selected to pose on beds in nightclubs all over Britain for this contest, one would be given a modelling contract with Nuts magazine.

In this context, modelling means glamour modelling, the coy words for posing almost naked for men's magazines. 'I want to do it to make my mum proud,' said one young woman, Lauren, in denim hotpants and tight, yellow crop top.

The girls got on the bed one by one, as Cara Brett, an established glamour model, took the microphone and began to direct them into more and more suggestive poses.

'Why not on all fours? Let's get those off,' she urged impatiently. 'If you're going to be a winner, you've got to show some skin.'

A plump young woman in mauve bra and knickers was one of the first to slip off her bra and jiggle her breasts at the cameras.

As the display became more sexual, the underwear unpeeling from the smooth skin of teenage women, the men in the club began to chant, heavily and fast, and to press nearer and nearer to the stage.

The men were using their phones to video and photograph the girls as they took off their clothes. One girl, who was a bit too fleshy around the middle and not fleshy enough around the chest, came in for boos rather than cheers. She looked tearful as she went back into the line.

The shortlisting was done at top speed - only women who flashed their breasts or their thongs for the crowd were called back for the final four.

'Come on,' said Cara impatiently, 'let's show some skin, girls. Let me help you out of these.' She dragged the hotpants off one girl, showing her sequined thong. The crowd erupted, and that girl was judged the winner.

As I saw for myself that evening in the Mayhem nightclub, and as one can see any night of the week in clubs up and down the UK, images that a previous generation often saw as degrading for women have now been taken up as playful and even aspirational.

The fail, it hurts!

Right, where do I start? Yes, there has been a sexualisation of our culture, especially with young women and teen girls but that was not caused by feminism! Why would somebody even think that a movement to give women equal rights would lead to chaos and this crap this so called journalist is spouting? How about the media taking a little credit for splashing half naked barely legal women across their newspapers, or let's take a look at the sidebar to the Daily Fail's website and see how often looks/weight/age are mentioned. Maybe the self righteous self appointed guardians of morality should go back to ranting about ASBOs and speed cameras.

And China says, "But but but, Americans hack us, too!"

China rejects claims of Internet hacking attacks

BEIJING – The Chinese government denied involvement in Internet attacks and defended its online censorship Monday after the United States urged Beijing to investigate complaints of cyber intrusions in a dispute that has added tension to bilateral relations.

China's policy against Internet hacking attacks is transparent and consistent, the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology said, nearly two weeks after search giant Google Inc. threatened to pull out of the country after finding that the e-mails of activists had been pried into.

"Any accusation that the Chinese government participated in cyber attacks, either in an explicit or indirect way, is groundless and aims to discredit China," an unidentified ministry spokesman said.

Also, I am amused--and by 'amused' I mean my eyes keep rolling--at China making "this is between Google and China and third parties (ie , the US government) should stay out" statments when they have been calling Google "White House's Google."

Real American Census to be Confused with Libural Census

RNC 'census' mailer draws fire

Officials of both parties are sharply criticizing a fundraising mailing from Republican National Committee Chairman Michael Steele they say could be confused with official correspondence regarding this year’s census.

The fundraising letter comes in the form of a “survey,” a frequently used device for partisan fundraising, but this one has a twist: Calling itself the “Congressional District Census,” the letter comes in an envelope starkly printed with the words, “DO NOT DESTROY OFFICIAL DOCUMENT” and describes itself, on the outside of the envelope, as a “census document.”

“Strengthening our party for the 2010 elections is going to take a massive grass-roots effort all across America,” Steele writes in a letter that blends official-sounding language, partisan calls to arms, and requests for between $25 and $500. “That is why I have authorized a census to be conducted for every congressional district in the country.”

The mailing is a Republican Party standby, a source of contributions — and occasional complaints — for more than a decade. But the latest round comes in a year when the actual United States census is getting under way, and officials say they’re worried that the GOP will sow confusion. News outlets in Wyoming, New York, Tennessee, and Minnesota have printed complaints about the mailers, with the director of the Census Bureau's regional office in Kansas City, Dennis Johnson, criticizing the letter in the Pioneer Press.

"My biggest concern is that it might be confusing to some residents who get this and then get the real one in a couple of months," Johnson said.

Congress is also taking an interest.

Obama to discuss rule on gays in the military in the State of the Union

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - President Barack Obama is expected to talk about the "Don't ask, don't tell" rule that bars openly gay Americans from serving in the military during his State of the Union address this week, a senior lawmaker said on Monday.

During his 2008 campaign for the presidency, Obama vowed to end the rule discriminating against gays and he renewed that pledge in a speech last year.

"We were told by the Pentagon that they expected the president to say something in the State of the Union on it," said Senator Carl Levin, chairman of the Senate Armed Services Committee, referring to the speech Obama will deliver on Wednesday evening to a joint session of the U.S. Congress.

But Levin added: "I have no idea" what Obama will say.

The rule, which dates to the presidency of Bill Clinton, requires homosexuals to keep quiet about their true sexual orientation if they want to be in the U.S. military. It also stops recruiters or commanders from asking members of the armed forces whether they are gay.

It was a compromise signed into law by Clinton in 1993 after the military objected to his calls for welcoming openly gay Americans into their ranks.

Levin, a Democrat, is among members of Congress who favor ending the policy and allowing gays to serve openly in military ranks.

Levin plans to hold a hearing of his committee on the policy by early February, he told reporters on Capitol Hill. He had considered holding the hearing in late January, but the Obama administration asked him to hold off until after the State of the Union speech.

In his speech at 9 p.m. on Wednesday (0200 GMT on Thursday), Obama will lay out the challenges and set the tone for his administration in 2010.

Critics charge that having gays openly serve in the military would undermine morale and discipline. Any such proposal from Obama is likely to be controversial.

Some key lawmakers oppose repealing the ban, including House of Representatives Armed Services Committee Chairman Ike Skelton, Levin's counterpart. Gay rights advocates have accused Obama of dragging his feet about keeping a campaign pledge.

Here's hoping the president makes a big announcement.

Sources: Obama to propose discretionary spending freeze

President Obama plans to announce a three-year freeze on discretionary, “non-security” spending in the lead-up Wednesday's State of the Union address, Hill Democratic sources familiar with the plan tell POLITICO.

The move, intended to blunt the populist backlash against Obama's $787 billion stimulus and an era of trillion-dollar deficits -- and to quell Democratic anxiety over last Tuesday's Massachusetts Senate election -- is projected to save $250 billion, the Democrats said.

The freeze would not apply to defense spending or spending on intelligence, homeland security or veterans.

The proposal is in line with a plan floated by Sen. Evan Bayh (D-Ind.), a fiscal hawk, who told Bloomberg's Al Hunt last week that there was a “fighting chance” Obama would propose a freeze in most discretionary spending by the federal government as part of his address.

Bolivia’s president Evo Morales began his second mandate with a cabinet reshuffle removing most ministers and complying with the gender parity. The announcement was done over the weekend following his second consecutive inauguration ceremony last Friday.

The new cabinet has now ten men and ten women, having kept only seven of the original team. Among those ousted were three considered “strong men” of the previous cabinet: Presidential minister Juan Ramon Quintana; Interior (Home) minister Alfredo Rada and Defence Walker San Miguel.

“One of my dreams has come true: half the cabinet seats are held by women”, said the Bolivian president. “The new cabinet is made up of singers, lawyers, economists, caucus leaders, doctors and workers”, added Morales who underlined that “for the first time in the history of Bolivia a woman is head of the Labour Affairs Ministry”.

Crazy Fundies: Glee Is Turning Kids Gay Just Like The Golden Girls!

An innocuous little show popped up on America’s tv screens late last year. Its name is “Glee” and it’s full of vibrant teens dealing with the gentle challenges of high school life. These are fresh-faced kids, hard working and motivated, who can break into song at the drop of a sweaty football. But is there more to this sugary pop of a series? Should parents be concerned about any subtext of adult themes and situations? What makes this show so popular?

An in-depth analysis of Glee will certainly raise the eyebrows of parents across America. It contains a surprising number of mature scenarios– from pre-marital sex to drug use, from adultery to abortion, from premature ejaculation to explicit homosexual experimentation. Glee goes out of its way to appear wholesome at first glance. The first 15 minutes of every episode is quite polite and that’s part of its success. It is colorful and cheerful with a scent of innocence. The message it seems to send is that teens should stay in school and aim for college. Yet beyond that (once the adults in the room tune out), it descends into a much darker place.

The Parents Television Council warns that Glee contains, “gratuitous sex, explicit dialogue, violent content, and obscene language. It is completely unsuitable for children.” This is reason enough parents should be tuning their teens out of Glee. But I would go even further– the ethical and social risks that Glee poses are so severe that it is unworthy of a home on a national network and should be removed from broadcast. I sincerely believe that no person or organization should continue to finance this show.

Charlie Simpson, 7-Year-Old, Raises $160,000 For Haiti

LONDON — A young British schoolboy has raised more than 100,000 pounds ($160,000) Monday for Haiti's relief effort by cycling round his local park.

Seven-year-old Charlie Simpson was so upset by the images of Haiti's deadly earthquake that he asked his mother if she could help him set up a sponsored bicycle ride around a west London park.

Charlie originally hoped to raise 500 pounds (for UNICEF's Haiti appeal with Sunday's 5-mile (8-kilometer) bike ride, but his Internet page was flooded with donations.

He raised nearly 50,000 pounds in a single day. Charlie's story was splashed on the front page of Britain's Daily Mirror newspaper on Monday, and money is still flooding in.

"I want to make some money to buy food, water and tents for everyone in Haiti," he said on his fundraising Web site.

The effort drew the attention of Prime Minister Gordon Brown, with his office Downing Street posting on Twitter: "Amazed by response to the great fundraising efforts of 7 yr old."

The boy's mother Leonora Simpson said she was amazed by the response. "We put it on the Web and that was it, it suddenly took off and we can't believe it," she said.

Do you have the cliff notes re: Teh Gay Mafia? U2 can testify for Prop8!

I did not do any prop8 trial posting last Friday cause I was away - you know- working (as one of those who are lucky enough to still have a job I don't take it for granted.) Tonight however I was able to catch the summaries and I will share a few bits.  Sometimes I feel like I should be wearing a read and gold blazer and holding a megaphone to present this stuff. This is a circus. Not a Barnum & Bailey so much as the kind of a kind of flea circus from an episode of Tom and Gerry.  The defendant’s witness is attempting to jump through hoops and clearly failing. He claimed to be an expert but much of what he’s being questioned on he hasn’t even studied until six- weeks before today.  Bois, for our side (and I say "our" because if your actually FOR prop 8 - I disown you from all literal humanity), rightfully rips this guy a new one. The testimony + commentary by the loyal and hard working live-blogger's over at prop8trialtracker and firedoglake.com/prop8trial  is all very much history +  Luz. Please do check them out today. Give them some props.

First off, the two teams spent much of the time this morning dealing with document issues because the Defense has waited till the very last minute to introduce HUNDREDS of documents into evidence ( if that doesn't seem like cheating... ) The Plaintiffs "rested" of sorts, but only inasmuch as they can re-open after they have time to actually read the HUNDREDS of documents the Defense pooped out into their inbox right before the legal buzzer.

Today brought us Dr Kenneth Miller which D-I (Defense) Thompson would like to present  as an "expert" on the political power of gays and lesbians.  The definition of Political Power is important because the defense would very much like ot make the case that TEH GAYS, and their agenda /mafia/ pedophilia marketing pyramid scheme cartel are powerful political entity and do not need to be protected by the courts (Cry Majority Martyrs! Crrrryyyyyy! ) Remember  we have Ellen, Will and Grace, those gay cowboys, NPR, Jeeves and Wooster... (I just threw those last two in for good measure, I'm sure Fry and Laurie on our side.) We, Teh Gays, are powerful and threatening.

But Mr Boies (our side) says, um not so much,  and he does a Voir Dire (examines the witness) to determine if he knows his stuff. Yes,  even this is amusing.  {excerpt from p8tt ... my own comments in '{... }'  transcribers' words in ' [... ]' }

Thompson: Tender witness as expert on CA politics and American politics.
Boies: Although I think I would not dispute that expert in some aspects in that broad field, concerned he may be asked to opine on political power of gays and lesbians which is beyond his expertise. Court to proffer his expertise. If it’s within his scope, okay. If not, we’d like to voir dire.
T: Certainly expert in gays and lesbians.
Judge Walker: Would you like to voir dire?
B: Good afternoon….
J: Still morning.
B: Have you written any peer reviewed articles on the power of gays and lesbians?
Miller: Depends upon your definition?
B: Of what?
M: Of power of gays and lesbians. I’ve written that French article. {Oh ..Oui! that one.. it's french, that's expert right?}
B: Other than that French article as you referred to it, have you written any other peer reviewed articles about power of g and l?
M: No.
B: You wrote about political power of gays and lesbians.
M: Yes.
B: You showed that gays and lesbians do not have political power?
M: No. They ran a good campaign against Prop. 8. {If by "good" you mean loosing ... well yeah- jack ass. }

US Schools are More Segregated Today than in the 1950s

The Civil Rights Project, UCLA, January 2009
Title: “Reviving the Goal of an Integrated Society: A 21st Century Challenge”
Author: Gary Orfield

Student Researchers: Rena Hawkins, Southwest Minnesota State University
Melissa Robinson, Sonoma State University
Faculty Evaluator: Sangeeta Sinha, PhD
Southwest Minnesota State University

Schools in the United States are more segregated today than they have been in more than four decades. Millions of non-white students are locked into “dropout factory” high schools, where huge percentages do not graduate, and few are well prepared for college or a future in the US economy.

According to a new Civil Rights report published at the University of California, Los Angeles, schools in the US are 44 percent non-white, and minorities are rapidly emerging as the majority of public school students in the US. Latinos and blacks, the two largest minority groups, attend schools more segregated today than during the civil rights movement forty years ago. In Latino and African American populations, two of every five students attend intensely segregated schools. For Latinos this increase in segregation reflects growing residential segregation. For blacks a significant part of the reversal reflects the ending of desegregation plans in public schools throughout the nation. In the 1954 case Brown v. Board of Education, the US Supreme Court concluded that the Southern standard of “separate but equal” was “inherently unequal,” and did “irreversible” harm to black students. It later extended that ruling to Latinos.

Homes evacuated in San Antonio as hill crumbles

By MICHELLE ROBERTS, Associated Press Writer Michelle Roberts, Associated Press Writer – 44 mins ago
SAN ANTONIO – Construction crews moved dirt to shore up a group of houses precariously perched on a crumbling hill in San Antonio on Monday as engineers tried to determine why the land below was shifting, causing dozens of homes to evacuate.

Gaping crevices, some 15 feet deep, cut across several yards as dirt cascaded into a towering stone retaining wall that nearly split in half. Fences crumpled like accordions as crews packed dirt under one home and around its exterior after part of its foundation was exposed.

One soil expert said the cause of the landslide appeared to be the result of poor retaining wall design, and a city official said the nearly 1,000-foot-long wall in the upper-middle class neighborhood of sprawling two-story homes was built without a permit.

Lieberman: ‘It’s Possible’ I Could Be ‘A Good Old-Fashioned New England Moderate Republican’

During the 2008 presidential campaign, Sen. Joe Lieberman (I-CT) supported Republican John McCain and attacked then-candidate Obama while speaking at the Republican National Committee. Though he currently caucuses with Democrats in the Senate, Lieberman has repeatedly stated that he views running for re-election in 2012 as an option.

In an interview on Connecticut’s Face The State program this weekend, Lieberman once again said that it was “possible” he could run for re-election as a Republican. Noting that “it would be harder, to be honest, to get the nomination in the Democratic party,” Lieberman said that while he is “most likely” to remain an independent, he could see himself as a Republican:

HOST: Could you see yourself being a Republican or is that…

LIEBERMAN: It’s possible.

LIEBERMAN: Yeah, yeah. No, it’s possible. A good old-fashioned New England moderate Republican.
