Records: Palin cabins not noted in tax assessments

Records: Palin cabins not noted in tax assessments

ANCHORAGE, Alaska – Records show that Sarah Palin hasn't paid any property taxes on cabins that have been built on two backcountry plots partially owned by the former Alaska governor.

There are no tax assessments for the two-story, house-sized cabins, a workshop and a sauna spotted Thursday in an aerial survey. Property taxes totaling $156.13 were paid on the land in 2009 — but that bill did not include anything for the structures because the local assessor didn't know about the new construction nearly 100 miles north of Anchorage.

The issue has attracted the attention of local tax officials who conducted the scheduled aerial survey of properties in the area on Thursday. The area is accessible only by floatplane, snowmobile or four-wheeler.

Dave Dunivan, the assessor for the Matanuska-Susitna Borough, said such a survey had not been done there in five years, before construction started on the cabins.

Palin's attorney, Thomas Van Flein, said it is not the responsibility of property owners to report structures that go up on their land.

"It is the borough's job," he said in an e-mail. "The property taxes on this parcel are fully paid and have never been delinquent."

The DUP says it has agreed a deal with Sinn Fein over the devolution of policing and justice powers from Westminster to Northern Ireland.

Conspiracy theorist time. HELP! THE GOVERNMENT IS CLONING US

The government has your baby's DNA

(CNN) -- When Annie Brown's daughter, Isabel, was a month old, her pediatrician asked Brown and her husband to sit down because he had some bad news to tell them: Isabel carried a gene that put her at risk for cystic fibrosis.
While grateful to have the information -- Isabel received further testing and she doesn't have the disease -- the Mankato, Minnesota, couple wondered how the doctor knew about Isabel's genes in the first place. After all, they'd never consented to genetic testing.

It's simple, the pediatrician answered: Newborn babies in the United States are routinely screened for a panel of genetic diseases. Since the testing is mandated by the government, it's often done without the parents' consent, according to Brad Therrell, director of the National Newborn Screening & Genetics Resource Center.
In many states, such as Florida, where Isabel was born, babies' DNA is stored indefinitely, according to the resource center.

Many parents don't realize their baby's DNA is being stored in a government lab, but sometimes when they find out, as the Browns did, they take action. Parents in Texas, and Minnesota have filed lawsuits, and these parents' concerns are sparking a new debate about whether it's appropriate for a baby's genetic blueprint to be in the government's possession.

"We were appalled when we found out," says Brown, who's a registered nurse. "Why do they need to store my baby's DNA indefinitely? Something on there could affect her ability to get a job later on, or get health insurance."
According to the state of Minnesota's Web site, samples are kept so that tests can be repeated, if necessary, and in case the DNA is ever need to help parents identify a missing or deceased child. The samples are also used for medical research.

Art Caplan, a bioethicist at the University of Pennsylvania, says he understands why states don't first ask permission to screen babies for genetic diseases. "It's paternalistic, but the state has an overriding interest in protecting these babies," he says.
However, he added that storage of DNA for long periods of time is a different matter.

"I don't see any reason to do that kind of storage," Caplan says. "If it's anonymous, then I don't care. I don't have an issue with that. But if you keep names attached to those samples, that makes me nervous."

Attorney: 10 US Baptists charged with child kidnap

Attorney: 10 US Baptists charged with child kidnap

PORT-AU-PRINCE, Haiti – Ten members of a U.S. missionary group who said they were trying to rescue 33 child victims of Haiti's devastating earthquake were charged with child kidnapping and criminal association on Thursday, their lawyer said.

Edwin Coq said after a court hearing that a judge found sufficient evidence to charge the Americans, who were arrested Friday at Haiti's border with the Dominican Republic. Coq attended Thursday's hearing and represents the entire group in Haiti.

Group leader Laura Silsby has said they were trying to take orphans and abandoned children to an orphanage in the neighboring Dominican Republic. She acknowledged they had not sought permission from Haitian officials, but said they just meant to help victims of the quake.

The children taken from the group, ranging in age from 2 to 12, were being cared for at the Austrian-run SOS Children's Village in Port-au-Prince on Wednesday.

Feel sorry for Kiely, but pity more his female colleagues

February 5, 2010

Banker surfs nude pics on live TV

Channel Seven's camera catches a Macquarie Bank operative getting distracted from his work.

No one with a heart can help feeling sorry for David Kiely, the hapless Macquarie stockbroker caught viewing near-naked images of Miranda Kerr on his work computer. Needless to say, it would be grossly unfair for Kiely to be disciplined more severely than normal by his employer simply because he was unlucky enough to be caught doing so live on Seven News, in a clip that has now amused millions of viewers around the globe.

What's more, these kinds of sexually provocative images of women are so ubiquitous that it's completely understandable that many are left thinking, "What's the big deal?" With rather more sexually explicit images regularly confronting us all on billboards and the magazine stands in convenience stores and petrol stations, it might be hard to work up too much outrage over a picture of Kerr directing a gentle come-hither look over her modestly shielded naked breasts.

But that doesn't mean that Kiely's behaviour should be dismissed as the harmless manifestation of red-blooded maleness, or that objections to it should be decried as ''wowserism'' or over-the-top political correctness. At a time when business leaders are wringing their hands over the dearth of women in finance and executive management roles, it's worth considering how sexually explicit images of women affect us, and what kind of message they send in the workplace.

Stockbroker David Kiely was sprung looking at near naked pictures of Miranda Kerr while colleague Martin Lakos did a live cross on Channel Seven.

Stockbroker David Kiely was sprung looking at near naked pictures of Miranda Kerr while colleague Martin Lakos did a live cross on Channel Seven.

For a start, male workers who think that viewing these kinds of images at work won't influence the way they perceive and interact with their female colleagues are probably mistaken. Consider a study that showed one group of men a series of ads portraying women as sex things, and compared their behaviour with that of men shown instead advertising material without sexual imagery. Later, each man was asked to interview a female job candidate, and their behaviour was carefully observed.

Men who had recently seen women portrayed as sex objects sat closer to the interviewee, flirted more and asked the candidate a greater number of sexually inappropriate questions. These men also rated her as less competent, and remembered a great deal about the woman's physical appearance but less information that would help them decide her suitability for the job.

In other words, images of sexually objectified women prime men to perceive and respond to fully clothed women in the same way. The GQ images of Miranda Kerr may not be hardcore (a fact presented by the Here is the City website campaign, which is attempting to save Kiely's job), but they may still leave male bankers with a stronger impression of the cut of a female colleague's blouse than her opinion of the financial markets.

When sexual material changes men's work interactions with women in this way, the cost to women is more than the potential overlooking of their mental, rather than physical, assets. Crucially, it can also blight her ability to perform well at work.

A now vast literature on a damaging phenomenon known as "stereotype threat" shows that environments that cue gender stereotypes - such as the stereotype of the empty-headed bimbo - impair women's ability to perform well in traditionally male domains. Women have to expend mental energy unconsciously suppressing the unflattering stereotype, and this interferes with the task at hand.

Psychologist Christine Logel and colleagues found that when men interact with female colleagues in even a very subtly dominant and sexually interested way, it triggered stereotype threat in female engineers, who then performed worse on an engineering test.

Women in male-dominated workplaces who doubt that their performance has ever been undermined in this way may also be mistaken. In Logel's studies, the women's ability was harmed by the subtly sexist behaviour of their male peers even when they weren't aware of it.

Even as psychologists learn more about how gender stereotypes adversely affect women trying to gain ground in male domains, material that primes those very stereotypes and attitudes becomes more common. Pornography is increasing in work settings, according to the Fawcett Society in Britain. And pornography in the workplace, however mild, serves as a signal to women that they are in male space. (Do male primary school teachers read Zoo magazine in female-dominated staff rooms? I very much doubt it.)

The drip, drip, drip effect of male workers viewing porn is the creation of an environment that is hostile and degrading to women - and this is in violation of the Sex Discrimination Act, as human rights lawyer Professor Aileen McColgan pointed out in the Fawcett Society's recent Corporate Sexism report. But when public responses to transgressions are casual and forgiving, women may be reluctant to complain about their male colleagues' use of pornography, for fear of seeming prudish.

So go ahead and feel sorry for Kiely, by all means. I do. But don't forget all the clothed women at Macquarie whose careers he helped make that much harder.

Cordelia Fine is a research associate at the Centre for Agency, Values & Ethics in the department of philosophy at Macquarie University.

Lawmakers ask Boy Scouts to end anti-gay practices

Cate and Elizabeth Wirth only wanted to volunteer with Boy Scouts and participate in the organization with their 10-year-old.

But things didn’t work out as planned or hoped. The Wirths were rejected as volunteers for their son’s troop. An official suggested the lesbian couple would “push their lifestyle on the boys.”

The string of events caught the attention of lawmakers. On Monday, 26 members of Congress wrote to Boys Scouts of America asking them to end their discriminatory practices.

U.S. Rep. Gary Ackerman, a New York Democrat and co-signer of the letter, said the Boy Scouts’ policies must change.

“I’ll always be a proud Eagle Scout, but this discriminatory policy must end,” said Ackerman in a news release. “Rejecting a Cub Scout’s mothers from volunteering just because of their sexual orientation doesn’t comply with the Scout law I recited at Scout meetings.”

The letter addressed to Robert Mazzuca, chief scout executive, notes how Boy Scout laws contradict the organization’s practices.

The letter states: “According to Scout law, ‘A Scout is trustworthy, loyal, helpful, friendly, courteous, kind, obedient, cheerful, thrifty, brave, clean, and reverent.’ We fail to see how it is friendly, courteous, or kind to bar loving parents from volunteering for their child’s Cub Scout pack just because of who they love. Furthermore, it is difficult to imagine how singling out the parents of one Scout for exclusion is an example of Scout loyalty.”

TWiB! - Black Truths

My mother is very light skinned.

Upon glancing at my own complexion, you might not guess that I am the offspring of such a light-skinned black woman. If Harry Reid had met her at the right time he might have tried to get her to run for office. (Dead horse? Still-a-beating.) My mother really doesn't have any traces of a Negro dialect (We all know what he meant) although, on occasion, I'll hear her try to replicate one and it's tremendously funny. She sounds pretty much exactly the same as she does normally, but when she's getting "Black" she'll add a "girl" or "chile" to the mix. There was an incident when I was child when my mom was forced to curse someone out and she started her diatribe with "You sir, are an asshole." Hilarity and amazingly placed F words ensued.

Joyce Elaine White is a handful and has very strong opinions. Such strong opinions I took them to be facts.

Facts about Blackness.

I remember one particular trip to the barbershop when I was nine years old. My mom explained to the barber what style she thought would be best suited for her young Nubian prince (Yes. She absolutely, with zero hint of sarcasm, referred to me as that.) The barber upon examining my hair said "Aww, he got that good hair." My mother didn't respond at all. After we left the barbershop she pulled me aside and explained to me, in no uncertain terms, that the barber, who I thought had complimented me, was terribly misguided. She wanted me to know that there wasn't any such thing as "good hair." What he meant was that my hair was closer to straight, more like my White teachers at school. "This does not make your hair 'better' than people with curlier hair. That's how Black people's hair is naturally."

And that was that.

I didn't consider the concept again for years. Joyce Elaine White's explanation as to why the barber had said what he said and then why he was wrong made perfect sense. As an adult, when I found out that people still classified types of hair like that, and used it in order to put others or themselves down, I was dumbfounded. Its the '00s and people are still conforming to such antiquated thought processes? Next thing you know someone will come along and tell me that I "talk White" or something.

And it has happened. Numerous times.

I've heard it from Blacks, Whites, Asians, and Hispanics. I sound "White." When pressed on what they mean by such a statement I've heard every thing from "Black people don't talk like that" to "No, no, no, I'm just sayin' you sound smart."

It's the 21st century, folks.

I'm always shaking my head and gasping at what I deem to be an incredible amount of ignorance shown when categorizing folks. I judge because I'm constantly pondering "who thinks like this? Who still doesn't know that these ideas are not okay?" Hence the idea behind me writing "13 Black Truths." In an attempt to create a conversation (and also to head off any super-ignorant shit people might think it reasonable to say to me) I've compiled thirteen things that I sort of take for granted as being widely accepted and yet, in the year 2010, they still cause debate. The latest This Week in Blackness (Mini Edition) lays them out.

The opening speaker at the first National Tea Party Convention called President Obama a "committed Socialist ideologue" who was elected because "we do not have a civics, literacy test before people can vote."

"You have launched the counter-revolution," the speaker, former Rep. Tom Tancredo (R-Colo.), told 600 or so delegates of the grassroots movement assembled at the Gaylord Opryland Hotel in Nashville Wednesday night. "It is our nation."

Tancredo also insisted on using Obama's middle name, Hussein, and said he was thankful Republican Sen. John McCain of Arizona lost the 2008 presidential election because Obama has mobilized an uprising.

"People who could not even spell the word 'vote' or say it in English put a committed socialist ideologue in the White House," he said.

Tancredo, a failed 2008 presidential candidate, made his reputation as a rabid foe of illegal immigrants. The literacy tests he pined for were once used in the South to keep blacks from voting.

A Museum of One's Own

Can writers' former homes become tourist destinations? The odds are long and the payoff is low.

Anne Trubek | January 29, 2010

It's hard to imagine the two-story house on East 86th Street in Cleveland's Fairfax neighborhood ever becoming a tourist destination. Pizza crusts, empty bags of spicy potato chips, and wrapping papers litter the green carpet. Huge holes dot the walls where the fixtures have been ripped out. The back door is open. "People will spend all day trying to get 10 cents worth of copper," says Jay Gardner, the community-development director for the Fairfax Renaissance Development Corporation, as he picks up an old grate and puts it across the door latch to prevent another break-in.

Yet Gardner is excited about the house's prospects. A week earlier, the development corporation purchased the property for $100 from the city of Cleveland and plans to spend $80,000 to $100,000 to restore it to its original condition and designate it a historic landmark. The house has a literary claim to fame: Langston Hughes lived here for about two years, starting in 1917, while he was in high school. He had moved to Cleveland shortly before with his mother, and when she left town he moved into this house, where he rented the attic room.

Gays Just Admit That You Are Addicted To Gay Sex so We Can Help You. Lesbians, You Are OK...

Christian Radio Host: Deal With Homosexuality Like We Deal With Drug Abuse

Bryan Fischer, radio host for the American Family Association and no stranger to controversy, called into Alan Colmes's radio program on Wednesday night to clarify, or perhaps sidestep, his position on "homosexual behavior."

In his talk with Colmes, Fischer doubled down on the rhetoric that he had used earlier on his blog.

"We should deal with the issue of homosexual behavior in exactly the same way we deal with intravenous drug abuse, because both are equally dangerous and risky to human health." Fischer told Colmes.

When Colmes pressed Fischer to say whether this meant gays should be imprisoned for "homosexual behavior," Fischer waffled (or, as Colmes put it, he "weaseled" out of the question).

"I'll let you make the call," Fischer said to Colmes.

On his blog, Fischer writes that gays should be subject to the same legal sanctions as intravenous drug abusers because, he argues, the public health concerns are one in the same.

"If you believe that what drug abusers need is to go into an effective detox program, then we should likewise put active homosexuals through an effective reparative therapy program," Fischer wrote in an earlier blog post.

Liberal Unfairness vs. James O'Keefe

WASHINGTON -- Irving Kristol, the recently deceased godfather of neoconservatism, once said to me, "Fairness is not a Liberal value." I thought about his asseveration while observing the Liberals' colossal indignation over conservative activist James O'Keefe's entry under false pretenses into the district offices of Senator Mary Landrieu (D-La.). O'Keefe is the merry prankster who entered the offices of the left-wing community action group ACORN under the false pretense of being a pimp. Repeatedly and in ACORN offices across the country the ACORNiacs counseled this faux pimp on how to be a successful sex entrepreneur. He taped them! The tapes exposed ACORN for the criminal enterprise it has become. O'Keefe became a hero to some conservatives but a scoundrel to all Liberals.

Now O'Keefe is under threat of indictment for bringing a couple of fellow pranksters into Senator Landrieu's office, though he has toned down his act. This time his associates claimed only to be employees of the telephone company, which I guess is understandable. One would not expect a United States senator's staff to counsel young men on success in the sex trade. For that matter, I doubt that the senator's staff would even counsel them on phone sex. Rather it appears that O'Keefe wanted surreptitiously to film Landrieu staffers working the telephones. His intent had something to do with a controversy about telephone callers not getting through to Landrieu's office. At any rate, all hell has broken loose because O'Keefe and his faux telephone repairmen were up to something tricky on federal property.

Now if they claimed to be members of a protest movement and were disorderly in a senator's office, Liberals would remain tranquil. In fact. Liberals did remain tranquil when this happened at Senator Lieberman's office last November. Or if they claimed to be environmentalists they could disrupt a member of Congress's office with no Liberal outrage. This happened in 1997 in Congressman Frank Riggs's office. Or for that matter they might claim to be associates of filmmaker Michael Moore and disrupt various congressional offices with cameras and microphones and general unpleasantness.

Liberals have a double standard when it comes to political protest or even political parody. We have seen this unfairness for over a generation. During the youth rebellion of the late 1960s (and it was the youth rebellion of left-wing youths -- most 1960s youths were conservative and in 1972 the youth vote went to Richard Nixon), the Yippies's coarse and often criminal mischief was applauded by Liberals as idealistic, heroic, and amusing. At the time it became fashionable among left-wing youths on college campuses to ambush "establishment" speakers at public lectures with a pie in the face, no matter how old or decrepit or unaware the poor lecturer might be. I cannot recall one pie heaver ever being denounced as a violent assailant -- though all of them were.

Suspecting that a double standard was at work, I and some fellow conservative students at Indiana University in 1971 (they were my colleagues at the nascent American Spectator) held a debate, invited a faux Columbia University sociologist, Professor Rudolph Montague (actually a grizzled Vietnam vet who had returned as an undergraduate), to participate, and in the middle of his absurdist left-wing discourse had a co-conspirator run on stage, call him "a goddamn Communist," and assail him with a pie. Rather brilliantly Professor Montague shouted his apologies to the fleeing student -- very Liberal of you, prof! Our intention was to demonstrate the double standard: peaceful conservative forums get no media attention, disorderly forums (usually left-wing) do.

What we got was an even more brilliant demonstration of unfairness. When Indiana University officials called Columbia University to apologize and discovered there was no Professor Montague, we were accused of a violent assault. So far as I can recall, we were the first pie heavers ever accused of violent assault. But can a thrown pie be a violent assault when engaged in by "consenting adults"? Somehow that does not seem right.

Yet it does not seem quite right to accuse the conservative O'Keefe of federal crimes when left-wingers disrupt federal offices as frequently as they do. Some years ago I was in Congressman Bob Barr's office when the drop-dead beautiful Hollywood figure Michael Moore came in claiming to high journalistic endeavors and being disruptive. He was asked to leave and became more disruptive. Then he followed us down the hall when Barr left for a meeting and continued his obnoxious mission of enlightenment. His efforts have been crowned with artistic awards. What will O'Keefe's award be?

For some ungodly reason, I was on the TAS mailing list. Needless to say, the title of this article tickled me.

Palin E-mails Suggest Todd Was Intimately Involved In Governing

E-mails obtained by The Associated Press suggest Todd Palin was intimately involved in decisions related to state government when his wife was governor of Alaska.

The e-mails show Todd Palin was included in messages on a wide range of government and political issues. Aides to then-Gov. Sarah Palin regularly sought Todd Palin's advice on such things as state board appointments.

In one e-mail, Todd Palin advocates having an Alaska newspaper removed from a press release list after Sarah Palin complained about an editor's fairness.

The e-mails, released to AP after a public records request, were accompanied by a 19-page list detailing those withheld, citing executive privilege, privacy or other reasons.

NAMBLA Overlords to Give One Free Boy to Volunteers! (Free Lolis Still in Consideration)

Ollie North On What Happens If Gays Are Allowed To Serve Openly In Military: ‘NAMBLA Members’ Are Next

Last night, Oliver North, the retired U.S. Marine Corps officer-turned-Fox News contributor, appeared on Hannity’s America to condemn the administration’s decision to overturn “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell.” North characterized Obama’s support for the repeal as a “stunning assault on the all-volunteer military, the very best in the world” and suggested that allowing gay and lesbian soldiers to serve openly was the tantamount to letting pedophiles into the military:

Stunning assault on the all-volunteer military, the very best in the world.
Barack Obama now intents to treat them like lab rats in a radical social experiment, and it can be very, very detrimental. … In other words, this isn’t about rights. This isn’t about fairness. It’s all about national security. And apparently, Mr. Obama has forgotten it. … Now, here’s what’s next. NAMBLA [North American Man/Boy Love Association] members, same-sex marriages. Are chaplains in the U.S. military going to be required to perform those kinds of rituals? Do they get government housing?

Men's rights activists drive Harper's policies

It should come as no surprise that the more extreme elements of the "Men's Rights" movement are big fans of Prime Minister Stephen Harper.

After all, the more fanatical Men's Rights Activists (MRAs) – those who keep angry blogs, send me vicious emails, denigrate "radical feminists," and act as if women get a better deal in life – have much in common with the TheoCons in Harper's caucus and inner circle.

Which would explain why Pastor Maurice Vellacott of Saskatoon-Wanuskewin, past chair of the Pro-Life Caucus, proponent of spurious research on women's health, creationist and agitator against same-sex rights, could get away with introducing Bill C-422, which would amend the Divorce Act to automatically award, regardless of history, "equal parenting" to warring couples.

Note that, just because Harper's prorogation of Parliament killed 37 bills midstream, the private members' bills didn't die. They live on until they are passed – just as Conservative MP Candy Hoeppner's bill to scrap the long gun registry did last fall – or until they are voted off the island.

MRAs love Vellacott's bill because, if they're as seriously deranged as some seem to be, they can continue to exercise control over their ex-wives and children.

The joke is – although I am not laughing – they blame "femi- nazis" for judicial decisions that award custody to mothers. That despite how, thanks to feminists fighting for shared parenting rights, men are now being awarded joint custody in almost half of all cases.

Libural Facts Continues to Undermine The Free Market to Kill Net Neutrality.

If Comcast and NBC CEOs Will Fib To Congress, How Do You Trust Them About Broadband's Future?

Comcast CEO Brian Roberts and NBC CEO Jeff Zucker went in front of the Senate Judiciary Subcommittee on Antitrust and Competition and the House Commerce Subcommittee on Telecommunications to defend their proposed merger. And while "Say Anything" was actually produced by competitor 20th Century Fox, that seemed to be the mantra of both CEO, as both got caught out in some creative truth stretching -- if not outright lies.

Comcast CEO Brian Roberts got called out by Senator Al Franken (D-MN) for the difference between what Roberts had told Franken privately and what Comcast's lawyers were saying elsewhere. Apparently, when Roberts met Franken a few days earlier, Roberts said that the Federal Communications Commission "program access rules" would ensure that Comcast/NBCU would make programming available to everyone. Roberts apparently neglected to mention Comcast had challenged the FCC's rules in court. Roberts also neglected to mention that his company was actively fighting rules which limit the ability of cable operators to discriminate against independent programmers, and that Comcast's lawyers had told the FCC that it didn't have the ability to regulate carriage decisions.

Religious right selfishly turns boy into pawn in gay-adoption battle

On the left is the picture that the Florida Family Policy Council of Orlando, used to illustrate the gay couple that was awarded custody of a relative. It appeared under the headline: "FL judge violates law, places child in homosexual adoption" (on the right) is the actual couple.

The judge's ruling said exactly what most people would want to hear in an adoption case.

It said that the 1-year-old boy who had been living with his foster parents was "happy and thriving" — and that a permanent adoption made perfect sense.

It should be a simple story with a happy ending.

Except it is not.

That judge's ruling — which focused solely on the child's well-being — enraged some on the religious right.

Why? Because the little boy's adoptive parents are gay.

So now those who profit from division are pouncing.

They aren't the people who have cared for this little boy, who have nursed his wounds and tucked him in at night. In fact, they haven't done a thing for him.

They haven't consulted the experts — everyone from a child psychologist to a Guardian ad Litem — who say the parents provide precisely the loving environment that this child needs.

All these critics know is that they don't want gay people to have the same rights as straight people.

So they want him separated from the parents who love him.

"Arrogant judicial activism" was how the finger-waggers at Orlando's Florida Family Policy Council described the ruling in an alert it sent out to its members last week.

And to make their point about just how frightening this ruling was, the Policy Council included a photograph of the couple — a strange and androgynous-looking duo, one with bleached skin and both with mullet haircuts. The couple look so odd (you literally can't tell whether they are male or female) that one might wonder how any judge could place a young child with such a disturbing-looking duo.

Except the judge didn't.

The abnormal-looking couple that the Policy Council chose to illustrate this story is not the same couple granted the right to adopt the child.

No, the two-woman couple awarded custody of the 1-year-old — South Florida trade-show executive Vanessa Alenier and her partner, Melanie Leon — look more like J.Crew models: all-American with catalogue clothes and smiles.

The picture that the Policy Council chose was a grotesque caricature.

These are the dirty tactics of Christianity's far-right warriors.

Not the majority of mainstream Christians, mind you. Not those who are focused on caring for their own families and practicing their own faith — but those who are obsessed with homosexuality.

These extremists wage their campaigns of intolerance based on deception and misrepresentation.

Sri Lanka tries to use UK media regulator to shutdown discussion of massacre tape

The loophole that could protect countries with something to hide

Author: Jon Snow

Jon Snow’s article first appeared in the Guardian newspaper.

The scandal of Britain’s libel laws and their facility for libel tourism is well known. So too is our traditionally cavalier attitude to freedom of speech.

But even against this background, the idea that a country with one of the worst records for press freedom and human rights was able to use the UK’s broadcast regulations to challenge legitimate reporting of allegations about cold-blooded killings in a brutal civil war surely takes the UK to a new place.
Whatever private individuals and corporations may be able to do, our legal system does at least prevent states, governments, and political parties from suing for defamation in our courts.

I and my colleagues at Channel 4 News are emerging from a storm that saw Sri Lanka bypass our libel laws and attempt to use Ofcom, the broadcast regulator, to do what the law would not allow – silence our journalism.

Links are as they were in the Snowblog source.

I'm pleased that the Sri Lankan government didn't succeed but annoyed they even tried. I hope this doesn't become a regular thing. The Libel Laws thing is concerning enough without OFCOM getting in on the act.

Really sad news from Honduras :(

A Lobo In Sheep’s Clothing?

Things are not looking that good on the human rights front in Honduras

By Jeremy Kryt

(TEGUCIGALPA, HONDURAS)  It was all supposed to be different once Porfirio "Pepe" Lobo took over as the new president of Honduras. Human rights crisis finished. Dictatorship deterred. Even after a highly-contested election in November--which most of the world refused to recognize and more than half of Hondurans didn't participate in--many both here and abroad still clung to the hope that a new executive officer might resolve what some experts have called a "one-sided civil war" because only the military-backed regime has employed violent means.

The diverse anti-coup resistance movement has maintained a nonviolent stance, refusing to respond even when authorities have attacked peaceful marches and gatherings with chemical-based crowd control weapons, rubber bullets and live rounds. Dozens of peaceful resistance members have been killed by soldiers, police and government-funded paramilitaries since the armed coup against democratically-elected president Manuel Zelaya in June 2009. Even more worrisome, local human rights groups report that clandestine death squads, reminiscent of groups that terrorized the country in the 1980s, are once again roaming the streets at night.

During a heavily-militarized inauguration ceremony in this capital city on January 27, Lobo--whose last name means "wolf" in Spanish--signed an amnesty agreement for those who had perpetrated the coup against Zelaya. The move was seen by many as confirming his pro-coup stance and furthering his attempts to white-wash the military takeover. Lobo urged Hondurans to "forget the past," saying, "We have proven that we are a peace- and freedom-loving nation."

But despite Lobo's rhetoric, there seems to be little peace or freedom in Honduras these days – and many critics say the situation seems unlikely to change under the fledgling Lobo administration.

NDP Leader Jack Layton Diagnosed with Prostate Cancer

Jack Layton is fighting prostate cancer.

“It’s the same kind of prostate cancer that my father was diagnosed with 17 years ago,” the NDP Leader told reporters Friday in Toronto. “He, like the overwhelming majority of men with prostate cancer, fought it and won. …I intend to bring to this battle the same sense of determination and optimism that he did.”

The condition was diagnosed in December, and treatments began this week.

Mr. Layton, 59, said he will not step down as leader while being treated. He noted that his wife, Olivia Chow, had also fought cancer.

“She won her battle and I’m going to win mine as well,” he said.

In January of 2003, Jack Layton inherited the leadership of a moribund party had just 13 MPs. In the 2000 election, the New Democrats under Alexa McDonough took just 8.51 per cent of the vote.

After winning a first ballot victory, Mr. Layton promised that “Canadian politics will be fundamentally changed.”

Over the past seven years, that prediction has proved correct, though Mr. Layton was not the most significant catalyst.

He has, on the other hand, increased both the size of the NDP caucus – to 37 – and the party’s fundraising efforts. And in 2008, the New Democrats, for the first time, spent the maximum allowed by Elections Canada in a federal campaign.

But Mr. Layton made it clear that he considers this disease a temporary setback that will not impair his ongoing leadership of his party.

Liberal Leader Michael Ignatieff wished his political opponent well.

“I wish him strength and courage on the road to recovery,” he said in a statement, “and I know all Canadians stand behind him in this fight.”

No sex ed is better than comprehensive sex ed.... o rly?

Will school districts drop sex ed rather than comply with state law?

Opponents of a controversial sex ed bill passed by Wisconsin legislators last week warn that if Gov. Jim Doyle signs the bill into law as he has promised, some local school districts will stage a revolt against the measure by ignoring it or dropping their human growth and development curriculum entirely.

“Did the state in its zeal to impose its own way even think about the consequences? Because a lot of districts are just going to just walk,” predicts Matt Sande, director of legislation at Pro-Life Wisconsin.

The proposed new law would require any Wisconsin public school district that offers a course in human growth and development — or sexual education — to teach students about sexually transmitted diseases and methods of safe sex, including contraception. Under current law districts can choose to provide only instruction focusing on abstinence or chastity.

The proposed new law doesn’t require school districts to offer such courses at all, however. School districts can drop their sex ed classes completely rather than comply, which is what Julaine Appling, president of Wisconsin Family Action, says her organization will encourage them to do in upcoming mailings. “This is a Planned Parenthood dream come true,” Appling says about the bill. “They have taken options away from local school districts. Now the choice is something Madison says is best or to have no human growth and development classes at all, which, quite honestly, is the better choice.

Appling’s group will also encourage parents to opt out of having their child participate in a school’s sex education class, something allowed under previous state law as well as the new measure.

Former boyfriend used Craigslist to arrange woman's rape, police say

Reporting from Denver - The advertisement appeared on Craigslist in early December.

"Need a real aggressive man with no concern for women," read the posting on the Internet classified advertising forum. Its purported author was a Casper, Wyo., woman, whose photo also was posted.

One week later, a man accepted the offer, forcing his way into the woman's home, tying her up and raping her at knifepoint.

"I'll show you aggressive," he allegedly said, according to court testimony.

In fact, authorities say, the woman had nothing to do with the ad. Instead, they say, a former boyfriend had posted it, soliciting her assault.

CHART OF THE DAY: It's Official: Obama Is Creaming Bush When It Comes To Jobs

Numbers don't lie, do they?

In the last year of the Bush administration, the monthly job loss numbers built steadily to a peak which then began to reverse itself during Obama's first year.

It's a perfect mirror image, as this chart from Nancy Pelosi's office demonstrates.

Now, whether this was the result of Obama's and Bush's policies... or whether it's just a matter of timing, is obviously open for debate.

We know what Speaker Pelosi would have you believe.

Ancient Indian language dies out

Ancient Indian language dies out
By Alastair Lawson
BBC News

The last speaker of an ancient language in India's Andaman Islands has died at the age of about 85, a leading linguist has told the BBC.

Professor Anvita Abbi said that the death of Boa Sr was highly significant because one of the world's oldest languages - Bo - had come to an end.

She said that India had lost an irreplaceable part of its heritage.

Languages in the Andamans are thought to originate from Africa. Some may be 70,000 years old.

The islands are often called an "anthropologist's dream" and are one of the most linguistically diverse areas of the world.

Professor Abbi - who runs the Vanishing Voices of the Great Andamanese (Voga) website - explained: "After the death of her parents, Boa was the last Bo speaker for 30 to 40 years.

"She was often very lonely and had to learn an Andamanese version of Hindi in order to communicate with people.

"But throughout her life she had a very good sense of humour and her smile and full-throated laughter were infectious."

She said that Boa Sr's death was a loss for intellectuals wanting to study more about the origins of ancient languages, because they had lost "a vital piece of the jigsaw".

"It is generally believed that all Andamanese languages might be the last representatives of those languages which go back to pre-Neolithic times," Professor Abbi said.

"The Andamanese are believed to be among our earliest ancestors."

Boa Sr's case has also been highlighted by the Survival International (SI) campaign group.

"The extinction of the Bo language means that a unique part of human society is now just a memory," SI Director Stephen Corry said.

'Imported illnesses'

She said that two languages in the Andamans had now died out over the last three months and that this was a major cause for concern.

Academics have divided Andamanese tribes into four major groups, the Great Andamanese, the Jarawa, the Onge and the Sentinelese.

Professor Abbi says that all apart from the Sentinelese have come into contact with "mainlanders" from India and have suffered from "imported illnesses".

She says that the Great Andamanese are about 50 in number - mostly children - and live in Strait Island, near the capital Port Blair.

Boa Sr was part of this community, which is made up of 10 "sub-tribes" speaking at least four different languages.

The Jarawa have about 250 members and live in the thick forests of the Middle Andaman. The Onge community is also believed to number only a few hundred.

"No human contact has been established with the Sentinelese and so far they resist all outside intervention," Professor Abbi said.

It is the fate of the Great Andamanese which most worries academics, because they depend largely on the Indian government for food and shelter - and abuse of alcohol is rife.

At the sauce is a recording of her voice.

Further developments on the John Edwards sex tape

(CNN) -- A judge ordered an ex-aide to former Sen. John Edwards on Friday to turn over a sex tape said to depict Edwards and his former mistress, an official in a North Carolina court said.

Judge Abraham Penn Jones found former Edwards aide Andrew Young and his wife, Cheri, in civil contempt of court
, said Tammy Keshler, a judicial assistant in Chatham County Superior Court.

He ordered them to give the court the tape and other materials they may have by 2 p.m. Wednesday, she said. The judge said he could jail the Youngs if they do not comply, she said.

Knicker-stealing Lancashire ex-mayor jailed

The ex-mayor of a Lancashire village who got "sexual kicks" from breaking into women's homes to steal underwear has been jailed for two years.

Ian Stafford, 59, who admitted three counts of burglary, resigned his post in Preesall after his arrest last year.

Preston Crown Court heard how he would creep into their bedrooms and search drawers for the underwear, before carrying out a sex act.

He was caught after one victim set up a hidden camera, catching him in the act.

The burglaries took place at buildings in Poulton-le-Fylde and Stalmine between 1 January and 26 June last year.

Stafford had been working as a part-time handyman and gardener at his victims' homes for years and was trusted with access.

But the female residents called in police after their underwear kept disappearing - one even installed a hidden camera in her bedroom.

The resulting 14-minute DVD was passed to Lancashire police and Stafford's home searched, where officers found stolen underwear marked with the women's names, the court heard.

He stole some items, while placing others back in the drawer.

Judge Heather Lloyd, who told him his actions were "bluntly revolting", sentenced Stafford, of Sandicroft Place, Preesall, to two years for each offence, to run concurrently.

"Your private desires or fantasies which should only be your concern became public when you decided to do what you did in the homes of those who trusted you," she told him.

The court heard the victims were "embarrassed, disgusted and shocked" to discover how the man they trusted was getting his "sexual kicks".

Speaking after the hearing, Det Con Steve Montgomery, said: "This has been a distressing ordeal for the victims involved, all of whom had let Mr Stafford into their homes, trusting him to carry out maintenance.

"They certainly did not expect him to search for, and steal, their possessions. There has been a breach of their trust in a very intimate nature."

"The victims are relieved that the court process is now over."

Tea Party Success!! 600 Tea Baggers Attended Patriotic Convention!

Convention Is Trying to Harness Tea Party Spirit

As they opened their inaugural national convention here, Tea Party advocates from across the country declared that they would turn the grass-roots anger that burst onto the streets a year ago into real political power, wielding money and campaign infrastructure as well as sheer energy.

Organizers of the convention announced on Friday that they were forming a political action committee to raise money and provide political consulting and campaign management for Tea Party-approved candidates. The PAC, an offshoot of a newly incorporated 501c4 called Ensuring Liberty, will seek to raise $10 million this year to spend in races in the 2010 Congressional elections.

To start, it will back conservative challengers in five races in the South. In the most highly visible, organizers want to run a candidate against Senator Blanche Lincoln, an Arkansas Democrat who has been under fire for her votes on health care legislation. In the coming weeks, organizers said they would identify another 15 or so races for Tea Party-backed challengers.

HALPERIN'S TAKE: What Sarah Palin and the Tea Party Movement Have in Common

1. Both scare the heck out of a Republican Establishment that is afraid to be critical of either of them in public (but savages them in private.)

2. Both "stand for" hazy opposition to big government, with no specifics on how they would do things differently (or effectively.)

3. Both have far less support in the country at large than a gullible Old Media seems to understand or suggest.

4. Both believe in the wonders of the American free market (for the nation and themselves.)

5. Both are the subject of endless fascination by cable TV.

Uganda rebuffs Obama on gay Bill

KAMPALA, Feb 4 - Uganda's ethics minister on Thursday dismissed virulent criticism of his country's proposed anti-gay law by US President Barack Obama and warned that any interference would be "unacceptable".

"Somebody should tell President Obama that the parliament is doing its legislative duty in the interest of the people of Uganda," James Nsaba Buturo, Ugandan minister of ethics and integrity, told AFP.

Obama described the Uganda bill as "odious" in remarks at the annual National Prayer Breakfast, a bipartisan gathering of lawmakers and religious leaders in Washington DC.

US presidents traditionally attend the event, but it sparked controversy this year because the Christian group that is a sponsor of the meeting has been linked to Uganda's much-criticised anti-homosexual legislation.

Buturo, one of the main Ugandan proponents of the bill which would further criminalise homosexuality and even gay rights advocacy, vowed that Ugandan MPs would not be swayed by US or any outside criticism.

"We cannot tell the Senate what to do. We cannot tell Congress what to do. So why do they feel that they can tell us what we should do in the interest of our people?" he asked.

Under the plan, a billboard company would replace existing digital displays that show abduction-related Amber Alerts and traffic updates with sophisticated color screens that also show advertising. The state currently operates 708 electronic boards on highways.

Girl, 11, Gives Birth to Baby Boy in Northeast Hospital

Source: FoxNews

An 11-year-old girl in the Northeast recently gave birth to a baby boy, the girl’s family told Fox News.

"My daughter and (her) baby are fine, and the baby is absolutely beautiful," said the mother of the 11-year-old girl. The girl and her family are not being named in order to protect the new parent's privacy.

According to Dr. Manny Alvarez, managing health editor of FoxNews.com, the girl’s age places her in significant danger.

"A very comprehensive approach to her care needs to be instituted early in her pregnancy," Alvarez said.

A recent report by the Guttmacher Institute said teen pregnancies in the U.S. were up 3 percent in 2006. But this case is not about a teenager, noted Dr. Abdulla Al-Khan, a leading high-risk obstetrician — it’s about a pre-teen whose body is not yet built to carry a child.

"Her body is clearly not defined for pregnancy with its short stature," Al-Khan said. "Her chest is not extensively developed for breast tissue, her bones aren't quite fused, and once you expose a child this young to high amounts of progesterone and especially estrogen, there is (a possibility) that it could halt her growth."

Al-Khan said other medical challenges facing a pregnant girl as young as 10 or 11 include:

— The pelvis is not defined for natural childbirth;

— The vagina could sustain injury during a natural birth;

— The patient is at high risk for preeclampsia, a pregnancy condition marked by high blood pressure and protein in the urine, and which can lead to convulsions and multi-system organ failure;

— A higher risk of pre-term labor and delivery, which would mean the baby’s size would be compromised, leaving the baby at risk for developmental issues, fetal growth restriction and chromosomal abnormalities;

— Higher incidence of stillbirth;

— Higher incidence of cholestasis of pregnancy, a condition caused by the blockage of bile, which can lead to stillbirth and placenta issues;

— A chance of developing fatty liver, which can be fatal.

"The textbooks don’t even tell you how to deal with a 10-year-old; it’s completely different even though we understand the basics," Al-Khan said.

Al-Khan said a patient like this would benefit from early intervention and would have to be seen on a weekly basis during the pregnancy to prevent complications.

"Think about how difficult a pregnancy is for someone in their 20s or 30s ... the aches, pains, the sleep deprivation," Al-Khan said. "Now imagine it in a child."

There are also psychological issues associated with pre-teen pregnancy because a 10-year-old cannot be mentally ready to give birth, Al-Khan said.

"This is heart-wrenching because you have a kid whose mental capacities can’t possibly wrap themselves around what it means to be a mother," agreed Dr. Keith Ablow, a psychiatrist and Fox News contributor. "There are so many psychological minefields in store for her. Feelings of guilt, feelings of wanting to nurture another human being, and yet this is all very, very complex and intense when she looks to her own family to essentially support, and if you will, father her child."

Ablow pointed out that the girl is dependent on her own family to take care of her, yet she now has a child who is dependent on her.

"She has her own life plan, and yet there’s another life that should take precedence," Ablow said.

According to the Guttmacher Institute, nearly half of all 15-19 year-olds in the U.S. have had sex at least once.

In 2002, some 13 percent of never-married females aged 15-19 had had sex before the age of 15, according to the think tank.

Al-Khan said it was likely that the possibility of terminating the baby would have come up in this case, because as sensitive a subject as it is, going through with the pregnancy would be a greater risk than having an abortion.

The youngest documented case of a child pregnancy was in 1939 in Lima, Peru, Al-Khan said. Lina Medina was six years old when she became pregnant and gave birth to a baby.
