The United Nations has now estimated that Pakistan will need billions of dollars to recover from its worst floods in 80 years - further straining a country already dependent on foreign aid to prop up its economy and back its war against Islamist militants. Over 60,000 troops are involved in flood relief operations trying to assist nearly 14 million people who are now affected by the flooding. The U.N. has just launched an appeal for $459 million in immediate aid, as Pakistanis have become more frustrated with their government's response and President Asif Ali Zardari's trip to Europe. Collected here are recent photographs of Pakistanis as they continue to cope with their flooded country.

LGBT groups turn up heat on Target; but is Best Buy getting off too easy?

While the standoff between LGBT groups and Target stores heats up over a $150,000 political donation that helped fund an anti-gay candidate for Minnesota governor, Best Buy, who donated $100,000 to the same fund, has quietly escaped much of the protests and headlines.

Two weeks ago, Target Corporation came under fire from gay rights advocates for contributing to Minnesota Forward, a political action group that has come out in support of anti-gay gubernatorial candidate Tom Emmer, a staunch opponent of same-sex marriage, who in 2007, authored a constitutional amendment to prohibit same-sex marriage and civil unions, and on numerous occasions has tried to change language in bills that would prevent same-sex couples from receiving benefits.

Within hours, LGBT activists sprung into action, and launched a Boycott Target page on Facebook, and a blog TargetingGLBT, all in effort to pressure the company to rethink its political contributions.

Not more than a day later, it was also revealed that Richfield, MN-based Best Buy contributed to the same group. And while a Boycott Best Buy effort was launched on Facebook as well, it was buried among the Target headlines and to date, barely attracted one tenth of the supporters of the Boycott Target effort.

Producer Mark Gordon Uses N-Word Twice At TV Pilot Table Read: Lifetime Notifies ABC Studios "This Needs To Be Dealt With"

EXCLUSIVE: I've learned that Lifetime formally notified Disney's ABC Studios that prominent TV and film producer Mark Gordon six weeks ago used the word "nigger" twice during a table read of the pilot for the Army Wives spinoff. He did it in front of cast and crew -- including two African-American actresses, pilot lead Gabrielle Union and Army Wives series regular Wendy Davis. "Lifetime took all appropriate steps and notified the studio that this is a situation that needs to be dealt with," an executive tells me.

In turn, a ABC exec informs me, "it was dealt with appropriately. I can't go beyond that."

Gordon issued this statement to me: “I feel terrible about this. It was a stupid lapse in judgment. I didn’t meant [sic] to offend anyone, and I’ve apologized to everyone involved.”

Man arrested at Atlanta airport in serial stabber case

ATLANTA – A possible suspect in a string of 20 stabbings that terrorized people across three states and left five dead was arrested at an airport as he tried to board a plane for Israel, officials said Thursday.

The man was arrested late Wednesday and was being held on unrelated charges, police in Leesburg, Va., said.

He was arrested at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport where he was trying to board a Delta Air Lines flight to Tel Aviv, Israel, said Rafael Lemaitre, a spokesman at U.S. Customs and Border Protection.

The man has ties to Flint, Mich., where the attacks began May 24, and to Leesburg, the site of three similar attacks last week, Leesburg Police Officer Chris Jones said.

This guy is all I heard about on the news down in D.C. for the past two days.  I'm glad this article at least says that the attacks may be racially motivated.  One news report said it couldn't because ONE of the victims was white.  Also, remember this person is still just a suspect so try to be cautious late at night until they confirm it's really the assailant.

Judge: Same-Sex Couples Can Marry Starting Aug. 18

Posted: 11:07 am PDT August 12, 2010Updated: 12:43 pm PDT August 12, 2010

SAN FRANCISCO -- A federal judge lifted his stay prohibiting same-sex marriages Thursday, allowing the ceremonies to take place beginning Aug. 18 throughout California.Chief U.S. District Judge Vaughn Walker had put the stay in place after ruling earlier this month that Proposition 8 -- a voter-mandated ban on same-sex marriages -- was unconstitutional.Thursday’s decision opens the way for the first same-sex marriage in the state since March 11, 2004, when the state Supreme Court ordered the ceremonies halted. The announcement came after lawyers for the two gay couples who brought the suit against the state, California Gov. Schwarzenegger and Attorney General Jerry Brown filed legal motions on Friday asking that same-sex marriages be allowed to resume immediately. Those motions were filed two days after Walker struck down California's voter-approved gay marriage ban as unconstitutional. In his 136-page decision, Walker said gay marriages should begin immediately, but agreed to suspend weddings until he could consider the legal arguments. California voters passed Proposition 8 as a state constitutional amendment in November 2008, five months after the California Supreme Court legalized same-sex unions and an estimated 18,000 same-sex couples already had tied the knot. Opponents of same-sex marriage said they want Proposition 8 to stay in effect until their appeal of Walker's ruling was decided by higher courts. Lawyers for Protect Marriage, the organization that campaigned for Prop. 8, have argued in court papers that resuming gay marriage now would cause legal chaos if the U.S. 9th Circuit Court of Appeals or U.S. Supreme Court eventually reverse Walker's ruling. Santa Cruz County Clerk Gail Pellerin, president of the California Association of Clerk and Elected Officials, said county agencies that issue marriage licenses would be ready to serve same-sex couples after being given the green light. Before deciding the case, Judge Walker heard 13 days of testimony and arguments. Defense lawyers argued that the ban was necessary to safeguard the traditional understanding of marriage and to encourage responsible childbearing. The judge dismissed the notion that gay Americans were seeking a new right as opposed to one already guaranteed them under the Constitution. He said that preventing gays from marrying does nothing to strengthen heterosexual unions or serve any purpose that justifies the ban's discriminatory effect. "Same-sex couples are identical to opposite-sex couples in the characteristics relevant to the ability to form successful marital unions," Walker wrote. "Like opposite-sex couples, same-sex couples have happy, satisfying relationships and form deep emotional bonds and strong commitments to their partners."

Sovereign Citizens Spin History, Reject Government

They call themselves sovereign citizens, U.S. residents who declare themselves above state and federal laws. Many don't register children's births, carry driver's licenses or recognize the court system.

Some peddle schemes that use fictional legal loopholes to eliminate debt and avoid foreclosures.

A few such believers are violent: Two police officers in Arkansas died in a shootout in May after stopping an Ohio sovereign citizen and his son.

As many as 300,000 people identify as sovereign citizens, the Southern Poverty Law Center found in a study to be published Thursday that was obtained by The Associated Press. Hate group monitors say their numbers have increased thanks to the recession, the foreclosure crisis, the growth of the Internet and the election of Barack Obama in 2008.

Adherents expect the current American system of government to end one way or another.

"I'm the Patrick Henry of the 21st century. I'm here to regain our freedom," James McBride said in a jailhouse interview. "I'm going to, or die trying."

Cross Dressing Karate

Ha? Yeah, Pops. Nip that gaiety in the ass, and get junior kicking some ass and karate-chopping some wood, all while listening to Eye of the motherfucking Tiger. That'll knock those show tunes out of his head and some sense into him. Other tips: Make him change the oil in your pickup, naked. And take him deer hunting, naked. Better yet, queer hunting. You and your drinking buds can go to a local Miami gay bar and show him how to pound the dust out of some fairies, who hopefully haven't taken martial arts classes at Key Biscayne's RDCA. Campaign by Miami ad agency Zubi.

Are these ads suggesting that you can cure the gay with karate lessons?
Or perhaps the parents have accepted junior's lot in life to be fierce and would prefer he have the mad flying kick skills to fight back the haters?

GOP candidate calls for internment camps for ‘people that snuck into the country’

Speaking at a rally sponsored by Glenn Beck’s 9/12 Project, GOP state house candidate in Florida, Marg Baker, endorsed building concentration camps for undocumented immigrants:

We can follow what happened back in the 40s or 50s. I was just a little girl in Miami, and they built camps for the people that snuck into the country, because they were illegal. They put them in the camps, and they shipped them back. We can do that.

It’s not clear just what camps Baker is referring to, but in the 1940s, the United States did indeed build a series of concentration camps detaining thousands of Japanese-Americans. Years later, President Ronald Reagan signed an official apology for America’s brief experiment with concentration camps. Baker should pay heed to Reagan’s example.

Jeffrey Gonsiewski Pleads Guilty To Bank Fraud; 'Robin Hood-Like' Scheme Disguised Customers' Debt

It's not every day that a man can perpetrate bank fraud and look like a hero.

But that's exactly what's happened to Jeffrey Gonsiewski, a banker who pled guilty Thursday to what the Chicago Tribune calls a "Robin Hood-like" loan scheme.

According to an FBI press release, Gonsiewski was the vice president of the loan department at First Security Trust and Savings Bank in suburban Elmwood Park. During a span of time that lasted through February of 2009, Gonsiewski oversaw loan customers who, like so many around the country, were falling behind on their payments.

The FBI describes his criminal act:
[Gonsiewski] altered loan documents to make it appear that customers' payments were current when he knew they were actually overdue, which prevented the bank from taking timely action to collect delinquent loans and protect its assets.
Put in a more sympathetic light, he bought time for customers struggling with their mortgages and other loans so that his bank couldn't "protect its assets" by foreclosing on them.

The Tribune certainly seemed more inclined to that kind of description, writing that Gonsiewski "fancied himself sort of a modern-day Robin Hood at a time when consumers were becoming increasingly delinquent on their bank loans."

For one count of bank fraud, he faces a maximum penalty of 30 years in prison and a $1 million fine. His plea agreement suggests a term of four to six years.

Kashmir on Fire Again as Indian Troops Shoot to Kill

As Indians prepare to celebrate the country’s sixty-third Independence Day on August 15, an eruption of deadly violence in the picturesque countryside and towns of Kashmir is a reminder that many Kashmiris still do not consider themselves part of India, and profess that they never will.

On paper, their claims are valid. The United Nations, and many countries individually, have never recognized as part of India what the Indian government calls its state of Jammu and Kashmir. The UN has its second-oldest peace monitoring mission there, after the Middle East. Both were established in 1948. In Kashmir, some forty-plus lonely UN monitors—from Chile, Croatia, Finland, Italy, Philippines, Republic of Korea, Sweden and Uruguay—have little to do except remind locals by their presence that the world knows that Kashmiris are still there, waiting.

Security Council resolutions followed the peacekeepers in the late 1940s and early 1950s, demanding that Kashmiris be allowed to choose their future by plebiscite. India has never allowed a vote to take place, and calls the issue moot.

Also, recently, India’s Rapid Action Force (RAF) (deployed in Srinagar recently) has been called out by the UN for using the ‘UN’ tag on its helmets and shields as it was against the world body’s guidelines.

And, another child (9 year old) is beaten to death by the police in Kashmir. It's extremely depressing.

Quayle’s son: Obama is the ‘worst president in history’

Is President Obama the "worst president in history"? That's what the son of former Vice President Dan Quayle claims in a new TV ad aimed at boosting his congressional bid in Arizona. Ben Quayle, running for the GOP nomination in the state's 3rd Congressional District, speaks directly to the camera in the spot, which began airing in the Phoenix area Wednesday. "Barack Obama is the worst president in history," Quayle says in the ad's opening seconds. Because of Obama, the 33-year-old says, "my generation will inherit a weakened country."

Citing "drug cartels in Mexico" and "tax cartels in D.C.," Quayle asks, "What's happened to America?" He goes on to ask voters to send him to Congress. "I love Arizona. I was raised right," he says. "Somebody has to go to Washington and knock the hell out of the place."

"Chelsea Clinton’s a Married Woman".

Sat., Jul. 31, 2010 5:15 PM PDT

Chelsea Clinton's inauguration to married life went off without a hitch.

No one forgot the words as Bill and Hillary Clinton's only daughter swapped vows with investment banker Marc Mezvinsky on Saturday in front of nearly 400 guests in what was, contrary to how it sounds, an extremely private ceremony.
