Detainee Acquitted on Most Counts in ’98 Bombings

The first former Guantánamo detainee to be tried in a civilian court was acquitted on Wednesday of all but one of more than 280 charges of conspiracy and murder in the 1998 terrorist bombings of the United States Embassies in Nairobi, Kenya, and Dar es Salaam, Tanzania.

The case has been seen as a test of President Obama’s goal of trying detainees in federal court whenever feasible, and the result seems certain to fuel debate over whether civilian courts are appropriate for trying terrorists.

Sharron Angle: 'Sometimes Dictators Have Good Ideas'

Nevada Republican Sharron Angle -- who fell short in her quest to unseat Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid earlier this month -- found herself back in the spotlight on Wednesday after questionable comments she reportedly made towards the end of her campaign came to light.

"Sometimes dictators have good ideas," explained the Tea Party darling at a private campaign event, according to Nevada political journalist Jon Ralston. At the Las Vas Sun, he writes, "Her staff fretted the line would get out. It did not. Until now."

Angle, who developed a reputation for sparking controversy over the course of her campaign, reportedly made the remarks in arguing that the country's Social Security system should be privatized. She cited right-wing dictator Augusto Pinochet and a system he implemented in Chile in 1981 to make her point.

Angle invoked the same reference over the summer. Ralston reports, "[She] had not used it since her staff shut her down. But that day, with no media there, saying her staff had warned her not to use it, she raised the Chile example again."

Oh the American right wing and their neverending love affair with Pinochet. Honestly, Angle needs to just move to Chile now and join the UDI (this honest to God fascist, Pinochet-loving, right wing political party that's basically like if the Tea Party were a more legitimate political force).

Ron Paul - "ENOUGH IS ENOUGH!" HR 6416, the American Traveler Dignity Act

Mr. Speaker, today I introduce legislation to protect Americans from physical and emotional abuse by federal Transportation Security Administration employees conducting screenings at the nation’s airports. We have seen the videos of terrified children being grabbed and probed by airport screeners. We have read the stories of Americans being subjected to humiliating body imaging machines and/or forced to have the most intimate parts of their bodies poked and fondled. We do not know the potentially harmful effects of the radiation emitted by the new millimeter wave machines.

In one recent well-publicized case, a TSA official is recorded during an attempted body search saying, “By buying your ticket you gave up a lot of rights.” I strongly disagree and am sure I am not alone in believing that we Americans should never give up our rights in order to travel. As our Declaration of Independence states, our rights are inalienable. This TSA version of our rights looks more like the “rights” granted in the old Soviet Constitutions, where freedoms were granted to Soviet citizens — right up to the moment the state decided to remove those freedoms.

The incident of the so-called “underwear bomber” last Christmas is given as justification for the billions of dollars the federal government is spending on the new full-body imaging machines, but a Government Accountability Office study earlier this year concluded that had these scanners been in use they may not have detected the explosive material that was allegedly brought onto the airplane. Additionally, there have been recent press reports calling into question the accuracy and adequacy of these potentially dangerous machines.

My legislation is simple. It establishes that airport security screeners are not immune from any US law regarding physical contact with another person, making images of another person, or causing physical harm through the use of radiation-emitting machinery on another person. It means they are subject to the same laws as the rest of us.

Imagine if the political elites in our country were forced to endure the same conditions at the airport as business travelers, families, senior citizens, and the rest of us. Perhaps this problem could be quickly resolved if every cabinet secretary, every member of Congress, and every department head in the Obama administration were forced to submit to the same degrading screening process as the people who pay their salaries.

I warned at the time of the creation of the TSA that an unaccountable government entity in control of airport security would provide neither security nor defend our basic freedom to travel. Yet the vast majority of both Republicans and Democrats then in Congress willingly voted to create another unaccountable, bullying agency– in a simple-minded and unprincipled attempt to appease public passion in the wake of 9-11. Sadly, as we see with the steady TSA encroachment on our freedom and dignity, my fears in 2001 were justified.

The solution to the need for security at US airports is not a government bureaucracy. The solution is to allow the private sector, preferably the airlines themselves, to provide for the security of their property. As a recent article in Forbes magazine eloquently stated, “The airlines have enormous sums of money riding on passenger safety, and the notion that a government bureaucracy has better incentives to provide safe travels than airlines with billions of dollars worth of capital and goodwill on the line strains credibility.” In the meantime, I hope we can pass this legislation and protect Americans from harm and humiliation when they choose to travel.

Please call your local representatives and encourage them to support this simple, one paragraph bill. This isnt about republican, democrat, libertarian, socialist, progressive or conservative. The TSA is out of control.

The Church: How to Lose Followers and Alienate People

200 Christians must brace themselves for a "new form of persecution" driven by homosexual activists and their ideological accomplices, an Italian cardinal has said.

Freedom of thought and expression is under threat from the gay rights movement, said Cardinal Giacomo Biffi, the retired archbishop of Bologna, in memoirs that are published on Thursday. And the result is that those people who disagreed with the homosexual agenda are being ostracised by society, he said.
"The ideology of homosexuality" – as often happens to ideologies when they become aggressive and end up being politically triumphant "becomes a threat to our legitimate autonomy of thought: those who do not share it risk condemnation to a kind of cultural and social marginalisation," said Cardinal Biffi.
"The attacks on freedom of thought start with language," he wrote. "Those who do not resign themselves to accept 'homophilia' ... are charged with 'homophobia'."
The cardinal asked: "Is it still permitted ... to be faithful and consistent disciples of the teaching of Christ ... or must we prepare ourselves for a new form of persecution, promoted by homosexual activists, by their ideological accomplices, and even by those whose task it should be to defend the intellectual freedom of all, including Christians?"
The remarks came as a British paediatrician lost a religious discrimination case after she was forced to step down from an adoption panel because she opposed adoptions by gay couples. Dr Sheila Matthews was employed by Northamptonshire County Council.
Peter Tatchell of the gay rights campaign group Outrage rejected Cardinal Biffi's claim that Christians were being persecuted by homosexuals and their supporters. "Gay human rights defenders are not persecuting Christians, we are simply asking them to stop persecuting us," he said.
Cardinal Biffi, 82, is seen as something of a maverick in Italy where he regularly made headlines with his pronouncements. He has attacked freemasonry, and feminism and once denounced journalists as "rats".

Keep considering yourselves "faithful and consistent disciples of the teaching of Christ" and keep ignoring the fact that Jesus never said anything about being gay and keep attacking a whole group of innocent people.

Arpaio swears in 56 new posse members

PHOENIX - Sheriff Joe Arpaio is adding some muscle to his immigration enforcement efforts by swearing in 59 volunteers who will be tasked specifically to illegal immigration issues.

"We received many calls from the public," Arpaio said. "They want to join this new posse, which shows their interest in giving back to the community in doing something to fight this problem."

Among the volunteers sworn in were some celebrities, including actor Lou Ferrigno, who is known for his role as the Incredible Hulk, as well as action star Steven Segal. Ferrigno, who is is a California resident and a deputy in L.A., joined Sheriff Arpaio at the swearing in Wednesday afternoon.

"I am here because of my strong stance," he said. "This posse is the power of the county."

The Sheriff has 59 other posses operating in Maricopa County. This posse will recieve special training in immigration issues and will be primarily used in drop house investigations and immigration sweeps.

"They wear the same uniforms, you can't tell the difference," said Arpaio.

All the posse members go through the same background check as deputies.

Of the 59 posse members, 33 are armed. They will often ride with deputies and offer support in making arrests and crowd control.

The Sheriff said his posses have saved tax payers millions.

Protesters who gathered accross the street called the whole thing a stunt.

"They must have sunk pretty low in their career to stand by Sheriff Joe Arpaio," said Tupac Enrique who protested with the small group.

Arpaio's posses aren't news, really, but lmfao @ "all the posse members go through the same background check as deputies". Arpaio's screening process for deputies is like male porn star-searching: He looks for the biggest dicks.

Funeral Protesters Now Targeting Oklahoma Children's Funerals

In a follow up to this post, the WBC has decided to retaliate for the tire slashing.

Protesters from a Kansas church who have gained attention through picketing at the funerals of fallen military servicemen are now turning their attention to protesting at the funerals of children to retaliate for their tires being slashed at a McAlester serviceman's funeral last week.

Members of Westboro Baptist Church in Topeka, Kansas will be in Burneyville in southern Oklahoma today (November 17, 2010). That's where a funeral is being held for eight-year-old Jalen Wolfe, who died in an accident at the Love County Fairgrounds last week.

On the WBC website, members say they are protesting because of the vandalism they suffered over the weekend while protesting at the funeral of McAlester serviceman Jason McCluskey.

They say quote "the Lord curses them by killing Oklahoma's children and casting them into Hell." Furthermore, their website reads "Thank God For More Dead Children In Oklahoma!".

In addition to today's funeral, the protestors are scheduled to return to Owasso Thursday to protest at the funeral of Melissa Hanslovan of Collinsville, who died Sunday after a one-car crash over the weekend.

The protesters were in Owasso earlier this year for the funeral of Specialist Andrew Looney. They say soldiers are being killed because of God's revenge against America for its tolerance of homosexuality.

Alan Grayson: Five Things The Rich Can Do With Their Tax Cuts (VIDEO)

WASHINGTON -- Alan Grayson (D-Florida) wants everyone to know that he is not in favor of extending the Bush cuts for the wealthy, which would average out to about $83,347 a year for each person in the top 1 percent of the U.S. income bracket. To drive his point home, he made a list for lawmakers on the House floor Wednesday night of the many ways those "high and mighty" individuals making an average of $1.4 million a year will be able to use that extra cash.

"Here's one possibility: they can buy an $83,000 Mercedes Benz E-Class car, not just once, but every single year for the next decade," he said. "And each year, when they get tired of their brand new Mercedes Benz E-Class car, they can just give it to somebody 'cause they can afford another one. They can give it to a spouse, a sister, a son, a daughter -- anybody. Every single year for the next 10 years, the Republican tax plan is to give millionaires enough money for a Mercedes Benz."

Other things rich people can buy with those tax cuts, Grayson said, include a $64,000 Hermés bag, a bottle of Chateau D'Yquem wine from 1787, 20,000 jars of "their favorite mustard" Grey Poupon, and 800 luxury cigars, each of which they could light with a $100 bill.

Grayson pointed out that President Obama's proposed tax cuts for the middle class, by contrast, will be received by unemployed people and "needy parents who need the money in order to pay the mortgage, pay the rent, pay their car payments, their credit card payments."

A better idea, Grayson concluded, would be to take that hundred billion dollars a year that would be saved by not extending the tax cuts and to use it to create jobs.

"Do the math: we have 14 million people in this country who are unemployed, and we have 13 percent unemployment in my district," he said. "Here's an idea: let's take that hundred billion dollars and give three million Americans a job. Let's give three million Americans a working wage, an honest day's pay for an honest day's work, and that will revive our economy."

NYC Mayor Michael Bloomberg teams up with the Amazing Spider-Man to battle a down economy

With great power comes great responsibility, but sometimes, having all the power in the world isn't enough to maintain a job.

The current economic climate has made employment a difficult prospect for thousands upon thousands of people across the country. Even within the comic book community, the rising costs of comics purchases continue to put a strain on fandom's collective wallet. It's a time where many residents throughout the United States and the world at large could surely use a superhero's help in getting back on their feet.

In New York City, such an attempt is being made in the form of "Spider-Man: You're Hired," a special one-shot written by Warren Simons and illustrated by Todd Nauck that highlights the employment resources available to men and women across all five of New York's boroughs as part of a joint collaboration between Mayor Michael Bloomberg and his Office of Media and Entertainment, Marvel Entertainment and The Daily News.

Antimatter Breakthrough Could Lead to Starships, Says Scientist

Scientists at CERN, the research facility that's home to the Large Hadron Collider, claim to have successfully created and stored antimatter in greater quantities and for longer times than ever before.

Researchers created 38 atoms of antihydrogen – more than ever has been produced at one time before and were able to keep the atoms stable enough to last one tenth of a second before they annihilated themselves (antimatter and matter destroy each other the moment they come into contact with each other). Since those first experiments, the team claims to have held antiatoms for even longer, though they weren't specific of the duration.
