Detachable (statue) Penis!

Italy PM replaces penis on statue, angers experts

ROME – Italy's culture ministry is defending Premier Silvio Berlusconi for giving ancient marble statues in his office replacement body parts, to the horror of art restorers.

The ministry, which is led by a close ally of the premier, says not to worry: The hand added to Venus and the penis added to Mars are attached by magnets and can be removed without damage.

For decades, restorers have widely agreed that missing parts of ancient statues should not be recreated.

Rome daily La Repubblica on Friday quoted Vatican Museums director Antonio Paolucci, one of Italy's top restoration experts, as saying "it's a pity" restorers didn't say no to Berlusconi's request to add parts to the statues in Chigi Palace, the premier's office.

Letter containing powdery substance found at 'Dancing with the Stars' studios

FBI: Threatening letter, powder found at 'Dancing With the Stars' studio
ABC says the substance — reportedly sent to Bristol Palin — was later determined to be talcum powder news services
updated 1 hour, 43 minutes ago
LOS ANGELES - A white powder in an envelope with a threatening letter delivered to the "Dancing With the Stars" production office at CBS Studios in Los Angeles was determined to be talcum powder.

ABC spokeswoman Amy Astley released a statement confirming that the envelope was delivered to the show's production office on the CBS Studios lot Friday night.

The statement said ABC was later told by Los Angeles fire officials that the substance was talcum powder.

Rest of the story here.

Oh FFS, this is getting ridiculous. I'm not happy either, but it's a stupid TV show! It's not as if a Bristol win will determine the governing policy of this country or anything! Its not like we remember who won three months down the line anyway. People need to calm down about this. This is getting to scary levels of crazy.

That being said, I'm voting for Jennifer every chance I get Monday.

For Transgender Day of Remembrance

Ottawa transgender community remembers, celebrates

Ottawa recognized the Transgender Day of Remembrance Saturday, something the city's transgender community called an "amazing" first step for raising awareness.

Ottawa police flew the group's flag at their headquarters, and a ceremony at city hall remembered transgender people who have suffered from prejudice and hatred around the world.

Transgendered individuals turning to surgery at younger ages

Jamie Evans is a talented artist and illustrator whose work has been commissioned by the Ontario Justice Education Network and the Canadian Aviation Museum, among other organizations. His clients are sometimes surprised by how young he is — just 24.

They'd be even more surprised to discover that he was born a woman.

Evans, who asked that his real name not be used, suffered from gender identity disorder. People with this disorder are referred to as transgendered, or trans, a catch-all term to describe someone whose gender identity does not match the physical sex they were born with.

The second article has some problematic wording so I apologize for that. I really, really hope that Bill C-389 passes, among other things it would mean that Canadian health care would cover gender reassignment surgery, which would be fucking awesome. Since I'm a cis woman there's nothing I say about today can really be that insightful or useful. As trite as this phrase is beginning to sound, it gets better. Society moves forward. And, most importantly, to every trans person who's reading this, there nothing wrong with you. You are amazing and beautiful and loved.

Edit: Some links for anyone who wants to educate themselves a bit, Trans What? - a kind of starter's guide to being an ally. Questioning Transphobia is also an amazing site that has a Trans 101 in the sidebar, just scroll a bit.

Harper seeks action against corruption

Stephen Harper said Saturday the Afghan government doesn't deserve a "dime" of direct foreign aid money until it cleans up its act on combating corruption.

The prime minister was on the same page with some of his biggest NATO allies, offering some of his toughest criticism of Afghanistan President Hamid Karzai.

It came after NATO and Afghanistan signed a long-term partnership agreement intended to signal to insurgents that the alliance will never turn its back on the country, even when it withdraws its combat troops in the years to come.

Karzai asked NATO leaders and coalition partners to step up the flow of the billions of aid dollars to his government instead of filtering it through international organizations operating in the country.

Gawker loses round with Sarah Palin

By MIKE ALLEN | 11/20/10 7:03 PM EST

A federal judge on Saturday ordered the website Gawker to pull down unauthorized excerpts from Sarah Palin’s forthcoming book, “America By Heart,” until a hearing scheduled for Nov. 30.

On Saturday evening, the link was broken to Gawker’s scoop, “Sarah Palin’s New Book: Leaked Excerpts,” which included 14 images of partial pages from the book, scheduled for publication Tuesday.

A two-page order signed Saturday by U.S. District Judge Thomas P. Griesa, who sits in Manhattan, says: “Gawker is temporarily retrained and enjoined from continuing to distribute, publish or otherwise transmit pages" of the book.

Unconscionable TSA horror stories

TSA forces cancer survivor to show prosthetic breast
Some fliers with medical conditions call new airport security procedures 'humiliating'

By Suzanne Choney

A longtime Charlotte, N.C., flight attendant and cancer survivor told a local television station that she was forced to show her prosthetic breast during a pat-down.

Cathy Bossi, who works for U.S. Airways, said she received the pat-down after declining to do the full-body scan because of radiation concerns.

The TSA screener "put her full hand on my breast and said, 'What is this?' " Bossi told the station. "And I said, 'It's my prosthesis because I've had breast cancer.' And she said, 'Well, you'll need to show me that.' "

Thomas Sawyer, 61, said he was left "humiliated" and covered in urine after undergoing a TSA pat-down.

By Harriet Baskas Travel writer

A retired special education teacher on his way to a wedding in Orlando, Fla., said he was left humiliated, crying and covered with his own urine after an enhanced pat-down by TSA officers recently at Detroit Metropolitan Airport.

“I was absolutely humiliated, I couldn’t even speak,” said Thomas D. “Tom” Sawyer, 61, of Lansing, Mich.

Sawyer is a bladder cancer survivor who now wears a urostomy bag, which collects his urine from a stoma, or opening in his stomach. “I have to wear special clothes and in order to mount the bag I have to seal a wafer to my stomach and then attach the bag. If the seal is broken, urine can leak all over my body and clothes.”

S.B. 510: A Food "Safety" Bill or Something Else Entirely?

Do you grow heirloom tomatoes you sell on your own property or at a local farmer’s market? If so, you will be in for a whopper of a surprise if Senator Durbin’s Senate Bill 510 (S.B. 510) passes: you may be receiving a visit from inspectors.

Products not grown according to designated standards will be considered adulterated and your business records will be subject to warrantless searches by inspectors from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), all this without any evidence that you have violated any law.

Wonder why the National Guard or Federal agents have effectively imposed martial law by quarantining your town? Under S.B. 510’s House counterpart bill, H.R. 2749 (Section 133b, “Authority to Prohibit or Restrict the Movement of Food”), sponsored by Congressman Dingell, the Secretary of Health and Human Services will have the power to prohibit all movement of all food within a geographic area, whether the food is in your grandmother’s grocery bag in her Toyota Hybrid or on a flatbed. No court order will be needed, just a phone call to the appropriate state official and a public announcement will be sufficient.

Upset that raw milk or raw milk cheeses (like feta) are no longer available in the U.S.? This could well happen thanks to the “performance standards” powers that would be granted to the FDA by S.B. 510, especially since the agency has made it clear that it is vehemently opposed to the consumption of raw milk products.

This is the first time I've heard about this and I'm not even sure what to think. The person who pointed this out to me said that basically having a back yard garden would be a thing of the past if this passes. If that's true then it's total bullshit.
