Tennessee Tea Party Wants Slavery Removed From School Textbooks To Make Founding Fathers Look Good

Tea parties issue demands to Tennessee legislators
Among 5 priorities, state group wants kinder treatment of Founding Fathers in history courses

Members of Tennessee tea parties presented state legislators with five priorities for action Wednesday, including “rejecting” the federal health reform act, establishing an elected “chief litigator” for the state and “educating students the truth about America.”

About two dozen tea party activists held a news conference, then met with lawmakers individually to present their list of priorities and “demands” for the 2011 legislative session that opened Tuesday.

Regarding education, the material they distributed said, “Neglect and outright ill will have distorted the teaching of the history and character of the United States. We seek to compel the teaching of students in Tennessee the truth regarding the history of our nation and the nature of its government.”

That would include, the documents say, that “the Constitution created a Republic, not a Democracy.”

Santorum launches CUM

In the ‘what were they thinking’ dept: Rick Santorum launches C.U.M.
This comes from the land of “you can’t make this sh*t up.” GOP Clown Car occupant, ace homophobe and bearer of a redefined surname that has become a giant political problem for him on Google, Rick Santorum is not doing himself any more favors by launching the Conservatives United Moneybomb, or C.U.M. for shorthand. Hat tip to Daily Kos front-pager Scott Wooledge on Twitter:

OK Repubs Intro. Bill That Prohibits The Consumption Of Human Fetuses Would Ban Stem Cell Research

No, this isn’t from The Onion. It’s a REAL bill that has been introduced by Republicans in the Oklahoma Senate. Introduced by Republican Ralph Shortey, Senate bill 1418 makes it illegal to make or sell food or other products that contain human fetuses, including in research and development. Republicans introduced the bill after a Christian Right anti-abortion group claimed that several major food companies are using embryonic stem cells to enhance the flavor of their products. The allegations never got off the ground and the accused companies have flatly denied doing such a thing. That’s because it’s not only unethical to use stem cells in such a manner, it’s also illegal under US law (and disgusting). Yet Oklahoma Republicans, eager to please pro-life groups, are moving forward with their bill which just so happens to have a few additional benefits for stem cell research opponents.

Wasn't sure if I was gonna post it, but I figure eh, why not. One of my FB friends shared it and it's so ridiculous, I figured I'd share with you all. I think it may be a bit of leap to say it could BAN stem cell research but then again, knowing republicans on this kind of stuff...

Mitt Romney's Tax Returns Show 13.9% Tax Rate, Highlight Challenges For Wealthy Candidates

WASHINGTON -- In an attempt to stop a steady stream of bad press over questions about his income, assets and tax rate, Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney released one year of his tax returns and an estimate for his 2011 tax returns on Tuesday morning. The disclosure comes four days after Romney's big loss to Newt Gingrich in the South Carolina primary on Saturday and after weeks of escalating questions about when he would release his tax returns and why he would not promise to disclose them.

The returns show that Mitt and Ann Romney, who are worth from $190 million to $250 million, earned $21.7 million in 2010 and paid a 13.9 percent tax rate, lower than that of a person earning $50,000. The total amount the Romneys paid in taxes in 2010 was about $3 million.

Pepperdine University Blocks Formation Of Gay And Lesbian Campus Support Group

MALIBU (CBS) — Pepperdine University has blocked formation of an official gay and lesbian support group on its Malibu campus.

School officials say the group’s mission conflicts with the university’s beliefs on sexual morality.

Four thousand students have signed a petition asking the university to reconsider.

The Associated Press reports this is the fourth attempt by Pepperdine students to start a support group for the LGBT — lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender — community at Pepperdine.

Pepperdine is a private university with an enrollment of approximately 7,700, according to its official website.

Pepperdine’s mission statement says that the university is “committed to the highest standards of academic excellence and Christian values.”

I attended this university as a theater student from 2005-2009 and never really gave this much thought. Basically because the theater department was it's own LGBT group that wasn't acknowledged...but there were still some of my friends who were afraid of coming out because of fear for persecution for their sexual orientation.

The petition mentioned is linked below. I encourage EVERYONE to sign it so these students can feel some sort of belonging in a intellectual establishment that is supposed to support their personal (intellectual and emotional) growth into functioning adults.

So ashamed of my Alma Mater right now.

Jimmy Fallon Sued for Gender Discrimination Against Men

Jimmy Fallon likes being bossed around by women, and tried to surround himself with an all-female stage crew -- that's the claim of a fired staffer who's suing Jimmy and NBC Universal for discrimination.

In the lawsuit, filed in Manhattan, Paul Tarascio -- claims he was dropped from his position as first stage manager at "Late Night with Jimmy Fallon" ... and replaced by a "totally incompetent woman" back in early 2010.

In the documents, obtained by TMZ ... Tarascio accuses Fallon of "gender bias" -- and says he wasn't the only victim. He claims other male staffers, such as audio technicians and a Prop-Master were also replaced by women at Jimmy's request.

Tarascio also alleges his replacement was "a less qualified woman" who constantly asked him how to do the job, and screwed up her stage manager duties.

In the docs, Tarascio says Jimmy's director, David Diomedi, told him, "Jimmy just prefers to take direction from a woman." He also claims that -- under pressure from producers -- Diomedi "knowingly fabricated alleged performance issues" about Tarascio.

Tarascio is suing for punitive damages and lost wages.

Calls to Jimmy's rep and NBC Universal were not immediately returned.

A litmus test for democracy in Thailand

Last July, the party associated with Thailand's pro-democracy "Red Shirt" movement won a landslide election victory, making Yingluck Shinawatra Thailand's first woman prime minister and giving a parliamentary majority to a coalition led by the Puea Thai Party, the latest in a line of populist parties that extends back to the government of former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra, who was overthrown in a military coup in 2006.

The vote was a decisive defeat for Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva and the Democrat Party, which has been placed in power by the military twice in the past five years.

The elections came just over a year after the military moved against ongoing democracy demonstrations by the Red Shirt movement in Bangkok and other cities, using tanks and live ammunition against unarmed demonstrators who demanded new elections. Despite the conditions of repression following the regime's attack on the Red Shirts, the Thai people turned out for Puea Thai--a testament to the mass support for the ongoing struggle against the military and Thailand's undemocratic royalist system.

Giles Ji Ungpakorn is a Thai dissident who lives in exile today. Faced with charges of the supposed crime of "lese majesty"--basically, not being loyal to Thailand's head of state, King Bhumibol--and a possible prison sentence of 15 years, he fled the country in 2009. Here, he discusses the failure of the Yingluck government to make meaningful reforms.
---

IN JULY 2011, millions of Red Shirts turned out to vote for the Peua Thai Party, headed by Yingluck Shinawatra. The party won a landslide majority despite various attempts by the military, the media and the elites to place obstacles in the path of the party's election victory. The election result was a slap in the face for the military and the "party of the military" (the mis-named Democrats).
