The Men Behind The War On Women

A group of men with no real background in law or medicine, but blessed with a strong personal interest in women’s bodies, have quietly influenced all of the major anti-abortion legislation over the past several years. The U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops may be one of the quietest, yet most powerful lobbies on Capitol Hill, with political allies that have enabled them to roll back decades of law and precedent.

Over the past two years the GOP-controlled House of Representatives has launched one of the most extreme assaults on women's choice the U.S. has seen in decades. Republicans voted twice to slash federal family planning funds for low-income women, moved to prevent women from using their own money to buy insurance plans that cover abortion, introduced legislation that would force women to have ultrasounds before receiving an abortion and, most recently, passed a bill that will allow hospitals to refuse to perform emergency abortions for women with life-threatening pregnancy complications.

But the erosion of women's rights didn't begin with the GOP takeover. President Barack Obama's health care reform law contained some of the most restrictive abortion language seen in decades.

Lift the curtain, and behind the assault was the conference of bishops.

"It is a very effective lobby, unfortunately, and now they have an ally in the Republican majority because both groups find this a means by which to fight women's health issues in general," said Rep. Lois Capps (D-Calif.), a member of the House Pro-Choice Caucus. "The bishops carry a lot of clout."

"We consider the two biggest opponents on the other side the Catholic bishops and National Right to Life," said Donna Crane, policy director of NARAL Pro-Choice America. "They are extremely heavy-handed on this issue."

College dorms for LGBT students

ODU offers designated housing for gay students

This fall, for the first time, Old Dominion University will offer dedicated on-campus housing for gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender students and their supporters.

ODU will be the third Virginia university to offer such housing, joining George Mason University and the University of Richmond. Elsewhere in the Southeast, only Duke University, in Durham, N.C., offers it.

The dedicated housing, called Lavender House, is intended to be a place where gay and lesbian students can feel safer and more accepted, ODU said in an announcement Thursday.

Charles Lowman, ODU's assistant director for housing and residence life, said Lavender House will build on efforts to match gay and lesbian students with roommates who will be comfortable with them.

"Having a dedicated residence space will make that matching easier, because Lavender House will be self-selecting," he said.

Lowman said having special living quarters doesn't mean gay and lesbian students are seeking to close themselves off from the rest of campus. Rather, he said, it will convey the message that the ODU community is open, welcoming and diverse.

"Any conversation we can start about this is helpful," said Kate Griffin, ODU's assistant director of new student and parent programs and chair of the university's Safe Space Committee. "Our goal is for ODU to be a leader in diversity in the Southeast."

Lavender House will be housed within an existing residence hall. The dedicated living quarters will meet a need identified by gay and lesbian students in a survey last spring, ODU said.

Other groups have appealed to the Office of Housing and Residence Life for dedicated housing spaces, and Army ROTC will have a reserved space this fall as well, the university said.

John Edwards sex tape to be destroyed after settlement reached

(CNN) -- A former aide and a former mistress of one-time presidential candidate John Edwards have settled a civil lawsuit between them that, among other measures, mandates the imminent destruction of sex tapes featuring Edwards and the woman.

Orange County, North Carolina, Superior Court Judge Carl Fox on Thursday signed the settlement agreement between Andrew Young, his wife and Rielle Hunter, the woman who had sued the couple, according to court official Tammy Keshler.

Hunter had sued Young and his wife, Cheri, for invasion of privacy seeking to reclaim materials that she said belong to her, including personal photographs and an alleged sex tape showing her with Edwards. Collapse )

Christopher Tappin extradited to US on missile charges.

A Briton extradited to the US for allegedly selling batteries for Iranian missiles has been taken into custody after arriving in Texas.

Retired businessman Christopher Tappin, 65, landed in Houston at 23:00GMT, after flying in from Heathrow.

He will make his first court appearance in El Paso on Monday.

Dan Cogdell, Mr Tappin's lawyer in the US, said he would "vigorously argue" for his client to be released on bail.

Mr Tappin, of Orpington, south-east London, has fought against extradition through the British courts after being charged in the US with conspiring to export batteries which could be used in Hawk air defence missiles.

He faces a trial and a possible 35-year jail sentence - but says that he is the victim of entrapment.

British judges say the extradition is lawful and the European Court of Human Rights in Strasbourg has refused to intervene.

OP: A hardened terrorist if ever I saw one! Plotting the end of the world as he goes to Neighbourhood Watch meetings in Orpington. All the while our governments ACTUALLY sell arms to corrupt regimes who use them to ACTUALLY kill their own people and get away scot-free. Makes you proud doesn't it!

Banker Leaves 1% Tip On $133 Lunch Bill In Defiance of 'The 99%'

A banker left a 1% tip in defiance of 'the 99%' at a Newport Beach restaurant the other week, according to his dining companion and underling who snapped a photo of the receipt and posted it to his blog, Future Ex Banker. (Update: the blog is now offline.)

In posting the photo, the employee gave some background on his boss and the receipt:

Mention the “99%” in my boss’ presence and feel his wrath. So proudly does he wear his 1% badge of honor that he tips exactly 1% every time he feels the server doesn’t sufficiently bow down to his Holiness. Oh, and he always makes sure to include a “tip” of his own.

The "tip" of his own in this case was to tell the server to "get a real job." Pleasant.

It's too bad the exbanker blog is down, would've been an interesting read and no doubt he's probably fired by now. I know there's speculation that it's not real, but I think it's real because there are people who WOULD do this.

French Socialist Party presidential candidate calls for interning the Roma

French Socialist Party presidential candidate calls for interning the Roma

By Antoine Lerougetel
24 February 2012

In a February 12 interview on Canal Plus TV, François Hollande, Socialist Party candidate for president in the upcoming elections, proposed as a “solution” to the presence in France of Roma European Union (EU) citizens “the creation of camps ... to accommodate them”.

The association of a “solution” in relation to specific racial groups with special camps can only bring to mind the period of Nazi rule in Europe, during which not only Jews and homosexuals, but also Roma and gypsies were rounded up and sent to extermination camps. This was not lost on many French people.

Hollande called for the establishment of “European rules to avoid our experiencing this constant to and fro [of the Roma]. Let there be camps that we can decide on, that is, to avoid these people settling just anywhere ... [to] enable these people to go back to Romania ... and not then return to France”.

Gay Texas judge won't marry straight couples

Tonya Parker, an African-American lesbian judge in Texas, refuses to marry straight couples until everyone in the state has the right to marry.

Turning away would-be newlyweds is "my opportunity to give them a lesson about marriage inequality in this state," Parker told a meeting of the Stonewall Democrats of Dallas earlier this week.

She said it's "oxymoronic" for her to perform a ceremony that can't be performed for her.

Instead, she refers couples to other judges in the courthouse with an explanation along the lines of "I'm sorry. I don't perform marriage ceremonies because we are in a state that does not have marriage equality, and until it does, I am not going to partially apply the law to one group of people that doesn't apply to another group of people," she told the meeting.

In a statement to the media issued Thursday and quoted on the Dallas-Fort Worth NBC affiliate, Parker said she would never impede anyone from getting married, but said she is not duty-bound to officiate over ceremonies and so chooses not to.

Parker was elected to the bench in 2010. She is the first gay person elected judge in Dallas County and is believed to be the the first openly gay black elected official in the state's history, according to Dallas Voice, a news site for the LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender) community.

Dutch Outraged Over Santorum's Euthanasia Claim

Rick Santorum's invocation of a nightmare of mass murder of the elderly in the Netherlands has provoked a storm of incredulity and criticism in the Western European country, where the local press say his statistics are wildly inflated.

"Rick Santorum Thinks He Knows the Netherlands: Murder of the Elderly on a Grand Scale" is Saturday's headline in the daily newspaper NRC Handelsblad.

Slut Shaming and Why It's Wrong

In early February, Anderson Cooper invited this Vancouver (now) 14-year-old to speak on his talk show about the above video, where she eloquently denounces "slut shaming." Well worth a watch if you forgotten why slut-shaming is a horrible form of bullying that can lead to violence, or if you want to stop fretting about the future generation. If this is any indication, they've got things well in hand.

This guy is awesome.

Rarely do we see student-athletes, football players, get involved in political matters that affect the universities where they play. We're not talking about student government, but the politics that happen within the university, disputes between workers or teachers and administration

Virginia safety Joseph Williams is changing that.

For the past eight days, Williams, a junior walk-on who has played in two games during his career, has been on a hunger strike "to protest the economic and social injustices perpetrated by the UVa administration against the vast majority of the University's service-sector employees."

Williams, a political and social thought major, wrote an eloquent and poignant essay about why he was participating in the hunger strike with the Living Wage Campaign.

Our University seeks to distinguish itself as a caring community and prides itself on traditions of honor and student self-governance. However, in our "caring community," hundreds of contract employees may make as little as $7.25/hour while six out of the top ten highest paid state employees in Virginia hold administrative positions at the University. Many employees, mostly women and African Americans, do not receive enough pay for their basic necessities to exist in Charlottesville, where the cost of living is nearly 10% higher than the national average. This extreme inequality has disturbed and disillusioned students for decades, many of whom have tried to grapple with issues of race, class, and poverty in and out of the classroom.

It's not often that you read this kind of political discourse by such a young man, and let's be honest, a football player. But Williams is not your ordinary student-athlete. He graduated from Dominion (Sterling, Va.) High when he was 16. In his essay he notes that he was one of four children supported by a single mother and that he lived in 30 different places, including many homeless shelters, which gave him a profound appreciation for socioeconomic challenges.

He walked on at Virginia at age 17 and has been refining his knowledge of politics ever since.

He does not say how long he plans to stay on strike, but as of Thursday, 18 students were involved in the cause. It's interesting, and even somewhat refreshing, to see a student-athlete go to the extremes for what he believes.

AVOID THE COMMENTS. Like I need to tell you people. And, after reading a horribly depressing, racist article about Lin and freaking FORTUNE COOKIE Ben + Jerry's ice cream, this guy made me smile again. Can we just have like, ten clones of him?
