Retailer Urban Outfitters has come under fire from many in the LGBT community for what advocates are calling a “transphobic” greeting card that was offered for sale on its website, but is now listed as sold out.

The “Ye Olde Jack and Jill” greeting card was spotted on Urban Outfitters’ United Kingdom website, and a screen shot has been circulated on the popular link-sharing website, Reddit.

The poem on the card reads:

“Jack and Jill
Went up the hill
So Jack could see Jill’s fanny
But Jack got a shock
And an eyeful of cock
Because Jill was a closet tranny.”

Urban Outfitters owns four other retail brands in addition to its namesake — Anthropologie, Free People, Terrain, and BHLDN.

Its Chairman and Co-Founder, Richard Hayne, has been described as “a stanch conservative who donates money to Republican politicians,” including GOP presidential hopeful Rick Santorum, according to a 2008 article published by the U.K.’s “This is Money.”

The article called Hayne’s views on homosexuality “both bizarre and old-fashioned.”

Urban Outfitters has not yet replied to a request for comment on the “Jack and Jill” greeting card, which is not listed for sale on its U.S. website.

She’s a Sens fan, her girlfriend’s a Leafs fan and their marriage proposal during NHL game was adora

Mods: I've been pretty sick all day so if this has already been posted, I apologize.

(Video at the source)

On Saturday night at Scotiabank Place, a Toronto Maple Leafs fan named Alicia stood on the ice during the second intermission wearing a blindfold. When it was removed, she looked up at the video scoreboard and read a message from her girlfriend, an Ottawa Senators fan named Christina.

Schmaltzy music played. Out walked Christina. They embraced and had a brief conversation, as the crowd began to wise up to what was about to happen.
Christina dropped to one knee while holding Alicia's hand. The fans roared. She slid the engagement ring on, they shared a kiss and the Senators mascot proudly raised a sign that read "SHE SAID YES." Just another night at the rink, eh?

You know, if our intermission entertainment choices are between a tricycle race involving guys in sumo suits and two girls committing to spend the rest of their lives together … well, we're probably still picking the fat guys on tiny bikes. But this was also adorable, and a nice reminder that the Battle of Ontario can produce things besides postgame brawls in the stands.

Same-sex marriage was effectively legalized in Canada by the courts in 2004, according to the Globe & Mail. As Cassie Murdoch of Jezebel notes: "Looks like there is yet another benefit to legalizing same-sex marriage: even more sports game proposals. Everybody wins."

And really, how wonderful and appropriate that this happened at a hockey game? Our sport has had to suffer through decades of being labeled a vulgar pastime for bloodthirsty troglodytes, and yet hockey's leading the way on progressive thinking when it comes to lifestyle acceptance.

From Patrick Burke's "You Can Play" initiative; to gay players beginning to feel comfortable coming out to straight teammates; to gay hockey teams, like this one in Ottawa; to this Kevin Smith's hockey-themed gay wedding to this proposal put on by the Senators … there's a lot to be proud of about our game and its appreciation of all players and fans.

Law firm fires 14 employees for wearing orange shirts

By Eric Pfeiffer | The Sideshow – 17 hrs ago

Janice Doble, in the orange shirt that got her fired (Michael Laughlin/Sun Sentinel)They weren't wearing sagging pants or revealing clothing. But dressing in an orange shirt is apparently enough to get fired at one Florida law firm, where 14 workers were unceremoniously let go last Friday.

In an interview with the Ft. Lauderdale Sun-Sentinel, several of the fired workers say they wore the matching colors so they would be identified as a group when heading out for a happy hour event after work. They say the executive who fired them initially accused them of wearing the matching color as a form of protest against management.

Russian Anti-Terror Troops Arrive in Syria.

A Russian military unit has arrived in Syria, according to Russian news reports, a development that a United Nations Security Council source told ABC News was "a bomb" certain to have serious repercussions.

Russia, one of President Bashar al-Assad's strongest allies despite international condemnation of the government's violent crackdown on the country's uprising, has repeatedly blocked the United Nations Security Council's attempts to halt the violence, accusing the U.S. and its allies of trying to start another war.

Now the Russian Black Sea fleet's Iman tanker has arrived in the Syrian port of Tartus on the Mediterranean Sea with an anti-terror squad from the Russian Marines aboard according to the Interfax news agency. The Assad government has insisted it is fighting a terrorist insurgency. The Russian news reports did not elaborate on the Russian troops' mission in Syria or if they are expected to leave the port.

Some more under the cut:

OP: Hmm. Don't they need a UN resolution for this? The worry is that seeing as the rebels are described as terrorists would the Russian troops start killing the protestors? Where will this all end?

Unedited Zimmerman Call Released: Racial Slur Clearly Audible

TRIGGER WARNING as this whole thing is of course disturbing - this is Zimmerman's initial call to the cops about the "suspicious character". Skip to 2:19 or so and you can hear him mutter "f***ing c**ns" to himself not long before being told by the responder that he doesn't need to follow Trayvon.

I'm trying to verify that this release is indeed new and we haven't heard this before but there's been a flood of stuff on this incident. Let me know if this is old news.

Trayvon Martin Exclusive: Friend on Phone with Teen Before Death Recalls Final Moments

In the final moments of his life, Trayvon Martin was being hounded by a strange man on a cellphone who ran after him, cornered him and confronted him, according to the teenage girl whose call logs show she was on the phone with the 17-year-old boy in the moments before neighborhood watch volunteer George Zimmerman shot him dead.

Martin's death Feb. 26 has stirred national outrage and protests, partly prompting the U.S. Justice Department's Civil Rights Division and the FBI to open an investigation into the case.

Tories fight dirty, nothing else is new

Conservatives release new election-style ads

There's at least three years before the next federal election, but it appears the Conservatives are already in campaign mode.

No, they haven't reverted to robocalls, but they have gone back to another signature tactic: television attack ads.

Stephen Harper's party has produced two election-style commercials, to be broadcast in key markets starting Tuesday.

The first one targets Liberal leader Bob Rae's record as premier of Ontario:

"As the premier of Ontario he has a proven record of failure," notes the video's narrator.

"By the time he was done, Premier Rae turned Ontario into the welfare capital of Canada. Bob Rae, if he couldn't run a province, why does he think he can run Canada?"

A Conservative source told the Toronto Sun that Rae is fair game because he has not ruled out running for the leadership of the third-place party.

The second ad is in colour, and highlights Harper's handling of the economy after the 2008 global meltdown.

"We welcome Bob Rae's call for a debate on his record and ours," the Conservative source told the Sun.

"So we are launching an advertising campaign highlighting Bob Rae's proven record of failure and contrasting it with the strong economic leadership of the prime minister and our Conservative government."

Chuck Winder, Idaho Lawmaker, Suggests Women Use Rape As Excuse For Abortions

The sponsor of an Idaho mandatory ultrasound bill, state Sen. Chuck Winder, made some highly controversial comments Monday during his closing arguments, suggesting women might falsely use rape as an excuse to obtain an abortion.

Just before the Idaho's Senate passed the bill, which requires woman to have an ultrasound prior to obtaining an abortion, opponents of the bill pointed out that it makes no exception for rape victims, incest victims or women in medical emergencies.

Winder, a Republican from Boise, responded to those concerns by raising the question of whether women understand when they have been raped.

Repubs who Passed Stand Your Ground Say Zimmerman should be Arrested

Stand Your Ground fathers: Trayvon Martin's killer should likely be arrested, doesn't deserve immunity

The fathers of Florida’s controversial Stand Your Ground law implicated in the death of 17-year-old Trayvon Martin say the man who shot him to death probably should be arrested and doesn’t deserve a self-defense claim of immunity.

Former state Sen. Durell Peaden and current state Rep. Dennis Baxley say the law they passed in 2005 was designed to protect citizens by giving them the right to “meet force with force.”

Both men say they don’t know all the facts of Trayvon's case. But, they say they believe the law would not allow a person like George Zimmerman to pursue and confront a person like Trayvon and then use deadly force. Zimmerman has not been charged.

“They got the goods on him. They need to prosecute whoever shot the kid,” said Peaden, a Crestview Republican who sponsored the deadly force law in 2005. “He has no protection under my law.”

Susan G. Komen Executives Resign Amid Reports Of Internal Troubles

Two top executives at Susan G. Komen for the Cure have announced their resignation, amid reports that the breast cancer charity is struggling to raise money and repair its reputation after its decision to defund Planned Parenthood and subsequent reversal.

Katrina McGhee, Komen's executive vice president and chief marketing officer, privately announced several weeks ago that she will be stepping down on May 4, and Dara Richardson-Heron, CEO of Komen's New York City affiliate, announced her resignation on Tuesday. Both cited "personal" reasons and declined to elaborate.

Komen founder Nancy Brinker informed the staff about McGhee's resignation in an internal email, sent Feb. 28 and obtained by The Huffington Post.

"For personal reasons, she feels it time to make a change," Brinker wrote. "We are thankful she has agreed to do some project work on an ongoing basis in order to stay engaged with Komen."

Tennessee abortion bill would publicize doctors' names (subtitle: fuck everything)

Tennessee lawmakers are debating legislation that calls for posting online the names of doctors who perform abortions and that could also identify their patients, The Tennessean says.

The measure, HB 3808 ("The Life Defense Act of 2012"), is to be taken up Wednesday by the House Health and Human Resources Committee, says its sponsor, Republican Rep. Matthew Hill of Jonesborough. The bill cleared a subcommittee March 6 on an 8-5 vote along party lines.

"The Department of Health already collects all of the data, but they don't publish it," Hill told our Gannett colleague in Nashville. "All we're asking is that the data they already collect be made public."

Opponents, however, say the bill is designed to intimidate doctors and their patients seeking abortions, even in emergency situations.

"I think publicizing this information will do nothing but cause serious consequences," said state Rep. Gary Odom, D-Nashville. "This is dangerous. This is a dangerous piece of legislation."

Hill said he plans to address opponents' concerns, without being specific.

The Tennessee Supreme Court ruled in 2000 that the state constitution protects abortion.

Bills to restrict abortion have emerged in several states. Elsewhere in the nation:

MPs approve NHS bill as Labour bid fails: Operation 'ruin NHS' is full steam ahead

The government's health changes have survived their final parliamentary test and are set to become law.

A Labour call for MPs to postpone their final consideration of the NHS overhaul until an assessment of the potential risks is published was defeated by 82 votes.

The House of Lords approved the Health and Social Care Bill on late on Monday evening.

The government hopes it will now get Royal Assent and become law by Easter.

The Health and Social Care Bill has had a difficult passage through Parliament with the government conceding substantial changes to the legislation.

The government overcame the final major parliamentary obstacle to the bill when it defeated the Labour motion on the issue of the NHS risk register by 328 to votes to 246.
