Danielle Smith Is No Sarah Palin: Palin was braver against Big Oil

The Wildrose Party, a political upstart made up of largely angry white people, sketchy Tories and climate change deniers, seems posed to replace the incompetent bunch of Conservative libertarians, panjandrums and climate change skeptics who have run Alberta into the ground.

Alberta's media have compared Wild Rose leader Danielle Smith to Sarah Palin, but she's no grizzly momma. Smith, a Fraser Institute libertarian, fronts a party that raises money by declaring: "Only when the government of Alberta supports and trusts its most important industry -- oil and gas -- will Alberta's future be truly secure."

Palin, the original "Drill, Baby, Drill" girl, knew better and acted accordingly. In her recently released emails the rogue Republican regularly expressed disgust with the way Big Oil bullied the state's politicians and electorate.

As governor, Palin once stood up a group of Exxon officials by going off and reading to a kindergarten class instead. In a more gutsy move Palin increased the share of royalties for Alaskans by maturely working with Democrats.

Alaska's new governor, a former oil lobbyist, is now working to reverse these gains.

Which does confirm that, while Smith isn't Palin, Alberta's debased political weirdness can't really be explained without some references to nearby Alaska. That wild and crazy petro state has not only been there and done all that. It also boasts parties more wonky than the Republicans, including Tea Party Republicans and the Alaska Independent Party ("Alaska First: Alaska Always.") The Alaska firsters, too, offer a Wildrose platform: less government and more oil.

I wish they'd let Palin's political career remain dead and buried but I appreciate info about Alberta's workings. They're a terrible influence on Canadian politics.

Britain destroyed records of colonial crimes

Thousands of documents detailing some of the most shameful acts and crimes committed during the final years of the British empire were systematically destroyed to prevent them falling into the hands of post-independence governments, an official review has concluded.

Those papers that survived the purge were flown discreetly to Britain where they were hidden for 50 years in a secret Foreign Office archive, beyond the reach of historians and members of the public, and in breach of legal obligations for them to be transferred into the public domain.

The archive came to light last year when a group of Kenyans detained and allegedly tortured during the Mau Mau rebellion won the right to sue the British government. The Foreign Office promised to release the 8,800 files from 37 former colonies held at the highly-secure government communications centre at Hanslope Park in Buckinghamshire.

The historian appointed to oversee the review and transfer, Tony Badger, master of Clare College, Cambridge, says the discovery of the archive put the Foreign Office in an “embarrassing, scandalous” position. “These documents should have been in the public archives in the 1980s,” he said. “It’s long overdue.” The first of them are made available to the public on Wednesday at the National Archive at Kew, Surrey.

Ted Nugent calls President Obama a 'Commie'.

Ted Nugent is at it again – causing controversy by claiming that the American president should be put in jail!

Talking on the Fox Business Channel, the Motor City madman said:

“I think that Barack Hussein Obama should be put in jail. It is clear that Barack Hussein Obama is a communist.

“Mao Tse Tung lives and his name is Barack Hussein Obama. This country should be ashamed. I wanna throw up.”

Never one to shirk an opportunity to slam anyone whose views on life conflict with his own, the Nuge also went on to goad vegetarians, as he insisted:

“You guys are denying yourself the sensual, spiritual stimuli of the good mother Earth that you can only get as a hands-on, reasoning predator.”

Classic Rock understands that Nugent isn’t expected to be inducted into the Veggie Hall Of Fame any time soon.

OP: Dearie me. Doncha just love when crazy people like this point at everything they don't like and go "COMMIE!!!!!!" as if Stalin's knocking on the door wanting West Berlin? The delicious irony being, Mr Nugent, that 'Commie' money from China is practically keeping the world economy afloat.

Iowa paper devotes front page to fighting bullying.

TRIGGER WARNINGS: HOMOPHOBIA, BULLYING AND SUICIDE

In a rare and forceful act of advocacy, an Iowa newspaper devoted the entire front page of its Sunday edition to an anti-bullying editorial after a gay teen committed suicide.

Relatives have said 14-year-old Kenneth Weishuhn Jr. suffered intense harassment, including threatening cellphone calls and nasty comments posted online, after coming out to family and friends about a month ago. He died April 15 from what the local sheriff's office described only as a "self-inflicted injury."

The Sioux City Journal's front-page opinion piece calls on the community to be pro-active in stopping bullying and urges members to learn more about the problem by seeing the acclaimed new film, "Bully," which documents the harassment of a Sioux City middle school student. It notes that while many students are targeted for being gay, "we have learned a bully needs no reason to strike."

"In Kenneth's case, the warnings were everywhere," the editorial said. "We saw it happen in other communities, now it has hit home. Undoubtedly, it wasn't the first life lost to bullying here, but we can strive to make it the last.

Editor Mitch Pugh said the newspaper has run front-page editorials before but has never devoted the entire page to one.

The original editorial which ran in the Souix City Journal today, can be found here.

I wish the writer would have taken a stand against homophobic bullying specifically, since it sounds like that is what killed this kid. Saying "we have learned a bully needs no reason to strike" really doesn't sit right with me...
