Ann Romney: “Why should women be paid equal to men?”

At a meeting with the “Moms For Mitt” group yesterday outside Philadelphia, PA, Ann Romney was asked her opinion on Lilly Ledbetter and equal pay for equal work regarding women’s employment. Without hesitation she responded with another question that seemed to shock even the most staunch conservatives in the room.

“Why should women be paid equal to men? Men have been in the working world a lot longer and deserve to be paid at a higher rate. Heck, I’m a working mom and I’m not paid a dime. I depend on my husband to provide for me and my family, as should most women… and if a woman does work, she should be happy just to be out there in the working world and quit complaining that she’s not making as much as her male counterparts. I mean really, all this wanting to be equal nonsense is going to be detrimental to the future of women everywhere. Who’s going to want to hire a woman, or for that matter, even marry a woman who thinks she is the same, if not better than a man at any job. It’s almost laughable. C’mon now ladies, are you with me on this?"

Pirates Party's rapid rise upsets German landscape

Pirates Party's rapid rise upsets German landscape

(Reuters) - With some sporting pirate garb and black beards in light-hearted tribute to their name, Germany's internet-savvy Pirates party gathered this weekend to chart a course that may yet take them to the national parliament.

The party aroused a mixture of rye amusement and angry derision when it stormed onto the political scene last year garnering 8.9 percent of vote in Berlin's city assembly. Since then, however, it has staked a claim to third place in the party pecking order, garnering 11 to 13 percent in opinion polls.

Even Chancellor Angela Merkel, not one to indulge the frivolous, must take them seriously. Her chances of winning a third term at 2013 federal polls are rising because the Pirates' surge from nowhere makes it less likely that the centre-left Social Democrats (SPD) and Greens can form a majority.

The Pirates are drawing support from all parties, but particularly from the left. Thanks to their spirited anti-establishment attitude they are also attracting many new voters who in the past stayed away from the polls on election day.

Pfft, Americans don't want a -loser- in the White House!

Boehner: Romney’s Wealth Won’t Hurt Him Because ‘The American People Don’t Want To Vote For A Loser’

Presumptive Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney has struggled to connect with average voters throughout his campaign, but that won’t hurt him in the general election, House Speaker John Boehner (R-OH) said Sunday.

Asked by CNN’s Candy Crowley whether Romney’s wealth presented him with a “hill to climb” in tough economic times, Boehner said it wouldn’t because “the American people don’t want to vote for a loser”:

CROWLEY: "You know, he comes from a privileged background. You did not come from a privileged background. This is a time — an economic time when people are hurting and have been hurting for quite some time.

Do you think that someone who is as wealthy as he is, who has had as much privilege as he is, has a hill to climb to overcome that?"

BOEHNER: No. The American people don’t want to vote for a loser. They don’t want to vote for someone that hasn’t been successful. I think Mitt Romney has an opportunity to show the American people that they, too, can succeed. (You know, that's a ironic statement, given Conservatives were more than happy to vote for George W Bush...twice, despite the fact he was a terrible business man that put more than one company into the ground.)

Romney has consistently reminded voters of his wealth, noting that he is friends with the owners of NASCAR and pro football teams, that his wife has “a couple of Cadillacs,” or that he doesn’t consider $374,000 in speaking fees to be “very much.” That top Republicans consider Americans who don’t enjoy those luxuries losers or unsuccessful, however, may be why its nominee has had such a tough time gaining favor with average voters throughout the 2012 election.

Stephen King: Tax Me, for F@%&’s Sake!

The iconic writer scolds the superrich (including himself—and Mitt Romney) for not giving back, and warns of a Kingsian apocalyptic scenario if inequality is not addressed in America.

Chris Christie may be fat, but he ain’t Santa Claus. In fact, he seems unable to decide if he is New Jersey’s governor or its caporegime, and it may be a comment on the coarsening of American discourse that his brash rudeness is often taken for charm. In February, while discussing New Jersey’s newly amended income-tax law, which allows the rich to pay less (proportionally) than the middle class, Christie was asked about Warren Buffett’s observation that he paid less federal income taxes than his personal secretary, and that wasn’t fair. “He should just write a check and shut up,” Christie responded, with his typical verve. “I’m tired of hearing about it. If he wants to give the government more money, he’s got the ability to write a check—go ahead and write it.”

Heard it all before. At a rally in Florida (to support collective bargaining and to express the socialist view that firing teachers with experience was sort of a bad idea), I pointed out that I was paying taxes of roughly 28 percent on my income. My question was, “How come I’m not paying 50?” The governor of New Jersey did not respond to this radical idea, possibly being too busy at the all-you-can-eat cheese buffet at Applebee’s in Jersey City, but plenty of other people of the Christie persuasion did.

Cut a check and shut up, they said.

If you want to pay more, pay more, they said.

Tired of hearing about it, they said.

Romney: Borrow Money From Your Parents

Mitt Romney is keeping his focus on the economy and encouraged young people to “take risks” to deal with a tough job market, even if it meant borrowing money from their parents, reports the New York Daily News. At a speech at Otterbein University in Ohio, Romney talked about how the owner of sandwich chain Jimmy John’s got started by borrowing $20,000 from his father.

“We've always encouraged young people: Take a shot, go for it. Take a risk, get the education, borrow money if you have to from your parents, start a business,” Romney said.

Democratic activists quickly pounced on the remark as another example of how the presumptive Republican nominee is out of touch.

“Only someone who paid for college by selling stock given to him by his CEO father would just casually assume students could go borrow $20,000 from their parents to deal with the economic challenges they face,” a spokesman for the Center for American Progress Action Fund tells the Associated Press.

At a roundtable discussion with seven students, Romney noted engineering majors were in high demand and wondered whether students would have chosen their areas of study differently if they had been clearly told about job prospects.

“You really don’t want to take out $150,000 loan to go into English because you’re not going to be able to pay it back. You might want to think about something else that meets your interest,” Romney said, noting that “as an English major I can say this,” reports ABC News.
Romney graduated with an English degree from Brigham Young University and later went on to study law and business at Harvard.

Romney’s speech was part of an effort by his campaign to continue focusing on the economy even as President Obama tries to shift focus to other issues, including national security, points out Reuters.

Because everyone's parents have money they can borrow? I seriously hate this smug rich asshole.

Apologise to all reporters for attacks during Bersih, DAP tells PM

KUALA LUMPUR, April 30 — DAP secretary-general Lim Guan Eng today insisted Datuk Seri Najib Razak openly apologise to every reporter allegedly assaulted by the police during last Saturday’s Bersih rally, rather than saying sorry in private.
According to a Malaysiakini report yesterday, the prime minister had tendered a whispered apology to Mohd Radzi Abdul Razak, a reporter from The Sun who was hospitalised following an alleged attack by police officers.

“The prime minister should not whisper his apology; he should apologise openly to reporters who were beaten up without reason,” said Lim today, adding that “the Home Ministry must take responsibility and can’t say that the police acted professionally.”

“Where’s the professionalism (of police) mentioned by the home minister? Reporters hit without reason, is this professional?”

Lim then called for the formation of an Independent Police Complaints and Misconduct Commission (IPCMC) to be set up to ensure action is taken against those who abused police powers during the rally and to prevent a repeat of such behaviour.

Citing an incident in Penang where two reporters were attacked during the February 26 anti-Lynas protest, the Penang chief minister added, “If no action was taken on the ordinary thugs, how can we expect the police to take action against their own members who beat up the reporters? We lack confidence (in the police’s investigations), we need the IPCMC.”

Yesterday, press groups urged Najib to investigate alleged violence against journalists covering Saturday’s Bersih rally.

The organisations highlighted six cases in which reporters were allegedly assaulted by the police while on duty, as well as the arrests of photojournalist Koh Jun Lin and photographer Huang An Jin, which they viewed as an attack against press freedom.

Police were alleged to have also manhandled journalists Arif Kartono, P. Malayandy, Harry Fawcett and Chen Shaua Fui, and either confiscated or damaged their equipment.

UKIP candidate Dr Gasper: PinkNews readers ‘should be sectioned under Mental Health Act’

(follow up to this post)

Outspoken UKIP city council candidate Dr Julia Gasper has said today that PinkNews.co.uk readers have made ‘hysterical accusations of being a murderer’ against her, and that most should be involuntarily committed for psychiatric treatment.

Dr Gasper said she saw similarities between her situation and that of Salman Rushdie, whose 1988 work The Satanic Verses led the Ayatollah of Iran, a country which executes gays, to put a fatwa out for his own execution.

The UKIP candidate for Oxford City’s Quarry and Risinghurst ward had written that gay people needed to stop “complaining about persecution” and start expressing “gratitude” to straight people, on whom they are reliant to be born.

She also suggested a link between homosexuality and paedophilia should be examined when selecting gay couples to adopt a child.

The majority of the views expressed do not seem to reflect official policy of UKIP, a political party which advocates withdrawal from the European Union, though it does also oppose marriage equality for gay couples.

Following our story from last week, Dr Gasper, who has a doctorate in English literature and lectures at the Stanford University Centre in Oxford, wrote this morning: “Thanks to all my friends on Pink News!

“The publicity you have given me has hugely increased the readership of my blog and supporters are pouring in. I am beginning to understand how Salman Rushdie felt when denounced by crazy extremists. Poor guy. The more you make anonymous death threats against me and hysterical accusations of being a murderer, the more deranged you all sound.

“It’s a shame that most of you are completely mad and need to be sectioned under the Mental Health Act. Just ring up your GP, tell him your symptoms and ask for help.”

George Zimmerman's Lawyer Mark O'Mara Wants Delayed Document Release

O'Mara fears for safety of witnesses

George Zimmerman's lawyer Mark O'Mara wants to delay the release of documents in the case of murdered, unarmed teenager Trayvon Martin.

O'Mara wrote on the new George Zimmerman website that he fears for the safety of witnesses who will be asked to speak at a future date in the case. Zimmerman's attorney also claims that he doesn't want a media frenzy directed at the witnesses.

Public records can be released 15 days after they have been requested by a defense attorney, according to Florida law.

Zimmerman's attorney said he would delay requesting those documents until he can file motions that prevent the release of witness names.

The murder by the neighborhood watchman of the 17-year-old Trayvon Martin has grabbed national headlines for months now.

Holding Birth Control Hostage

Doctors still require women to submit to cancer screenings and pelvic exams to get birth control pills. Scientists say that shouldn't happen.

Recently, my doctor gave me an ultimatum: Come in for a pelvic exam, or I won't refill your birth control pills. The problem arose after I tried to get my prescription refilled before going on vacation in March, only to be told that the doctor's office wouldn't sign off on the refill because it had been a year and one month since I'd had an annual exam and a Pap smear. A nurse grudgingly gave me a monthlong reprieve if I promised to come in for an exam when I returned from my trip.

I really, really didn't want to go in for an exam. I've had two kids, a false positive Pap test and all the ensuing misery that comes with it, and spent enough time in the stirrups to last a lifetime. All I really wanted were my pills; I was pretty sure the exam could wait another year or more.

The science was on my side.

Trayvon's killer now using social media

Learning last Friday that George Zimmerman had amassed about $204,000 in online donations prior to his bond hearing was pretty staggering in and of itself. Even more staggering was the fact that the man who shot and killed Trayvon Martin, and now stands charged for his murder, inspired some folks to log onto his website, open their checkbooks and break out their credit cards.

Zimmerman's attorney, Mark O'Mara, told CNN that he hadn't known about the website or the PayPal account it used to collect those funds prior to Zimmerman's bond being set at $150,000 -- which was paid prior to his release a week ago today:

"He asked me what to do with his PayPal accounts, and I asked him what he was talking about."

The prosecution asked the judge presiding over the case to raise the bond on Zimmerman in light of the new information; the judge may later do so.. Martin family attorney Benjamin Crump wants the bond revoked altogether, claiming that the Zimmerman family "tried to portray themselves as indigent" in the bond hearing testimony.

Meanwhile, O'Mara shut down the donation website. His own office told the Orlando Sentinel why:

The point, said Jimmy Woods, O'Mara's office manager and spokesman, is for Zimmerman to have no Web presence.

That was an April 25 report. Within three days, O'Mara's office had set up not only a new web presence, but a rather clean-looking one, gzlegalcase.com. They also launched a Twitter account and Facebook page (where you can 'like' the George Zimmerman Legal Case, and have that pop up on your feed). And yes, all three sites are rocking a professionaly-designed logo (at right). (Are we now supposed to call it the "GZ case"?

Charges referred to courts-martial at Fort Bragg for 8 soldiers in Afghanistan bullying case

An Army officer and seven other soldiers accused of bullying a private who later killed himself in Afghanistan have been officially charged, Fort Bragg officials said Monday.

Military authorities say 19-year-old Pvt. Danny Chen of New York suffered racial taunts and physical abuse at the hands of soldiers in his company and eventually shot himself last October in a guard tower at Combat Out post Palace near Kandahar.

The eight soldiers will be court-martialed at Fort Bragg. They are part of the 25th Infantry Division, which is based at Fort Wainwright, Alaska, but were under the command of the 82nd Airborne Division in Afghanistan.

The 82nd's commander, Maj. Gen. James Huggins, requested that the courts-martial be held at Fort Bragg. Lt. Gen. Frank G. Helmick, commander of Fort Bragg and the 18th Airborne Corps, approved the move and referred the charges to courts-martial April 23.

The soldiers will be arraigned by a military judge in the next few weeks. Individual cases will be scheduled for trial.

The soldiers and charges are:

First Lt. Daniel Schwartz: six specifications of dereliction of duty.

Staff Sgt. Blaine Dugas: violating a lawful general regulation, three charges of dereliction of duty, and making a false official statement

Staff Sgt. Andrew Van Bockel: negligent homicide, reckless endangerment, assault, two counts of maltreatment of a subordinate, three charges of dereliction of duty, and two counts of violating a lawful general regulation.

Sgt. Jeffrey Hurst: negligent homicide, reckless endangerment, maltreatment of a subordinate, two counts of dereliction of duty, and two counts of violating a lawful general regulation.

Sgt. Adam Holcomb: negligent homicide, reckless endangerment, communicating a threat, assault, two counts of maltreatment of a subordinate, dereliction of duty, and four counts of violating a lawful general regulation.

Sgt. Travis Carden: reckless endangerment, assault, two counts of maltreatment of a subordinate, and two counts of violating a lawful general regulation.

Spc. Thomas Curtis: negligent homicide, reckless endangerment, four counts of assault, six counts of maltreatment of a subordinate, and two counts of violation of a lawful general regulation.

Spc. Ryan Offutt: negligent homicide, reckless endangerment, three counts of assault, four counts of maltreatment of a subordinate, and two counts of violation of a lawful general regulation.

hillary clinton: slaying your favorites since 1947.

Earlier this month, we noted Hillary Clinton’s sudden surge in coolness after the Secretary of State spent a night dancing and drinking beer at a bar in Colombia, where she was attending an international summit. (President Obama, who attended the same summit but was not pictured in blurry bar photos the next day, we theorized, had faked an illness so that he could catch up on Mad Men and aimless Wikipedia searches in his hotel room.) But just how is Hillary Clinton accelerating her awesomeness this week? By coolly rejecting tenuous casting offers for popular prime-time television shows.

On last night’s Late Night with Jimmy Fallon, Jason Segel appeared to promote his new comedy The Five-Year Engagement. But before discussing the movie, the comedic actor excitedly dove into an anecdote about how, according to Segel, the stateswoman recently got in touch with him to turn down a role that she was never officially offered on his CBS sitcom, How I Met Your Mother.

“Every time I’m on the red carpet and [reporter ask me], ‘Who is the mother going to be?’ I always say Hillary Clinton, just as a joke. And then I got a letter in the mail that was like, ‘I appreciate your request but I must say that I am very busy doing politics. If the opportunity ever arise, I would be happy to do something together. —Hillary Clinton.’ [Laughing.] I got a rejection letter from Hillary Clinton.”

the letter itself is under the cut, courtesy of politico.
