If you don't want to be strip-searched, look for a new job

Female workers sue over Portsmouth strip searches

Nan Vollette, a mental health counselor, knew working at the Portsmouth City Jail meant she was subject to searches. She figured she'd be subject to a pat-down, maybe.

Not in a million years, Vollette said, did she expect to have someone tell her to strip down for a visual body-cavity search.

"I don't think anybody would have expected that," she said.

Now she and eight other women - all employees of companies that hold contracts at the jail - have filed federal lawsuits against Portsmouth Sheriff Bill Watson.

The American Civil Liberties Union of Virginia, which represents the women, said in a news release Monday that the searches were conducted as "part of an ongoing investigation of drugs being brought into the jail."

Vollette's suit, which also names other jail staff members as defendants, states that around April 22, 2011, -Watson "ordered that all civilian contract employees be subjected to a strip search and visual body-cavity search."

It states that "Watson did not have any individualized suspicion that any particular employee.... was carrying on or about their person any contraband or illegal item into or out of the jail or committing any crime."

ACLU lawyers said the jail's actions violated the Fourth Amendment of the Constitution regarding unreasonable searches.

Watson said Monday that anyone coming into the jail, including himself, is "subject to be searched like anybody else."

"If anybody doesn't like the policy, look for a new job," he said. "We're going to stop this contraband from coming into this jail."

OBESE JOB APPLICANTS FACE BIAS: REPORT

Overweight women are being discriminated against when applying for jobs and receive lower starting salaries than their skinny colleagues, according to a new study.

Monash University, together with the University of Hawaii, examined whether a recently developed measure of anti-fat prejudice, the universal measure of bias (UMB), predicted workplace discrimination against obese people.

Lead researcher Kerry O'Brien, from the School of Political and Social Inquiry, said the nature of the study initially was concealed from the participants to avoid biased results.

Participants were shown a series of resumes that had a small photo of the supposed job applicant attached, and were asked to make ratings of the applicants' suitability, starting salary and employability.

"We used pictures of women pre-and post-bariatric surgery, and varied whether participants saw a resume that had a picture of an obese female attached, or the same female but in a normal weight range having undergone bariatric surgery," Dr O'Brien said.

Officer Allegedly Blinds Woman with Pepper Spray

BEAUMONT, Calif. (KTLA) -- A Beaumont police officer accused of permanently blinding a woman with pepper spray pleaded not guilty on Thursday to four felony charges.

A Riverside County grand jury last week indicted officer Enoch Clark on charges of assault with great bodily injury and other felonies.

On February 21, Clark sprayed pepper spray in the face of Monique Christina Hernandez, 32, while he tried to arrest her on suspicion of driving under the influence, the city of Beaumont said in a statement.

Clark allegedly fired the spray from 12 inches away using a JPX device, which shoots spray at speeds of 400 miles per hour and is supposed to be used at a minimum distance of five feet, Hernandez's lawyer Milton Grimes said in an interview.

Hernandez suffered severe injuries to both of her eyes, Grimes said.

Clark is charged with assault likely to cause great bodily injury, assault with a less-lethal weapon, assault under the color of authority and use of force causing serious bodily injury.

He is now free on $50,000 bail.

Clark has been placed on administrative leave by the Beaumont Police Department.

Stark Talk: Breast surgeon Prof Mike Dixon

Saw this and immediately thought of ONTD_P. In the end, this is what 'socialised healthcare' gets you, kids. Not just the treatment, but the doctors - too.

Stark Talk: Breast surgeon Prof Mike Dixon

Prof Mike Dixon in theatre
Prof Mike Dixon has performed breast surgery and reconstructive surgery on thousands of women diagnosed with cancer.

"I think I have always been an admirer of women," leading breast cancer surgeon Prof Mike Dixon told BBC Scotland's Stark Talk programme.

"Women cope much better than men - and women, generally, are let down by their men, and that includes me too", he said.

Dr Dixon is a world-class consultant surgeon working at the Western General in Edinburgh - the largest and busiest breast unit in the UK.

Over the past 25 years, he has performed breast surgery and reconstructive surgery on thousands of women diagnosed with cancer.

The 57-year-old consultant admits that during his student days at Edinburgh University's medical school in 1970s he had a reputation as a "ladies man".

But Dr Dixon, who has been "happily married" for 27 years, said he found it very easy to "like and admire women without seeing them as sexual objects".

He added: "Also you are looking after women in a very vulnerable situation so it is really nice to be their friends and look after them and help them through difficult times."

The consultant admitted to being a "very emotional" person, who cried at weepy movies.

"I take things to heart and I think if you don't you probably don't try as hard," he said.

Romney’s Openly-Gay Spokesperson Resigns After Facing Pressure From Anti-Gay Right Wing

Richard Grenell, the openly-gay conservative foreign policy spokesperson hired by Mitt Romney, has resigned from the campaign in response to right-wing pressure, the Washington Post’s Jennifer Rubin reports. “[M]y ability to speak clearly and forcefully on the issues has been greatly diminished by the hyper-partisan discussion of personal issues that sometimes comes from a presidential campaign,” Grenell said in a statement, which came just days after groups like the American Family Foundation painted Grenell as a “homosexual activist” and condemned Romney for bringing him on board. From his statement:

GRENELL: I have decided to resign from the Romney campaign as the Foreign Policy and National Security Spokesman. While I welcomed the challenge to confront President Obama’s foreign policy failures and weak leadership on the world stage, my ability to speak clearly and forcefully on the issues has been greatly diminished by the hyper-partisan discussion of personal issues that sometimes comes from a presidential campaign. I want to thank Governor Romney for his belief in me and my abilities and his clear message to me that being openly gay was a non-issue for him and his team.

Rubin reports that Grenell was also frustrated for “being kept under wraps during a time when national security issues, including the president’s ad concerning Osama bin Laden, had emerged front and center in the campaign.”

The former spokesperson for U.N. ambassador John Bolton had also come under fire for tweeting all sorts of flippant comments about liberals, Democrats, women and, especially, U.S. foreign policy under the Obama administration. Only a day after the announcement of his new post, Grenell joked on Twitter that President Obama had committed treason by passing missile secrets to the Russians. Shortly after his appointment, he scrubbed much of his online presence, deleting over 800 tweets and taking down his personal website.

Boy Scouts of America official resigns in protest over expulsion of gay mother

A regional official of the Boy Scouts of America has resigned in protest at the expulsion of a gay mother from her son’s group for being a lesbian.

Jennifer Tyrrell was ejected from the scouting organisation when her sexual orientation became known.

Now, a board member at the Ohio River Valley Council has stood down.

David Sims, a lawyer, heard of Ms Tyrrell’s case last week and resigned in protest.

He told the Los Angeles Times: “I felt that it was wrong that she was removed as the Tiger Cub leader solely based on her sexual orientation.”

The Boy Scouts of America has adopted positions since 1991 which state that homosexuality is “inconsistent with the Scout Oath that a Scout be morally straight and in the Scout Law that a Scout be clean in word and deed”.

Its Scout Promise states: “On my honor I will do my best to do my duty to God and my country and to obey the Scout Law; To help other people at all times; To keep myself physically strong, mentally awake, and morally straight.”

The Scout Law states: “A Scout is trustworthy, loyal, helpful, friendly, courteous, kind, obedient, cheerful, thrifty, brave, clean, and reverent.”

Mr Sims said he was not fully aware of the policy which banned gay leaders from the private organisation.

In his resignation letter, Mr Sims wrote: “I understand that this action was taken as a result of a standing policy of the Boy Scouts of America and that said action is legal. However, Ms. Tyrrell’s removal goes against my fundamental beliefs of how we should treat our fellow human beings and is, in my opinion, wholly discriminatory. Collapse )

Drug Enforcement Agency Ignores Locked Up UCSD Student

Daniel Chong, the UC San Diego student who was left in a Drug Enforcement Agency holding cell for nearly five days, said the time spent in his cell was a life-altering experience.

Before holding a press conference Tuesday afternoon, the 23-year-old spoke with NBCSanDiego and said he was increasingly worried throughout the days he spent in a 5 ft. by 10 ft. cell, where he could not spread his arms out wide.

“They never came back, ignored all my cries and I still don’t know what happened,” he said. “I’m not sure how they could forget me.”
