Disabled can go for gold in Paralympics but can't earn brass

Britain today welcomes the Paralympics competitors, while David Cameron sacks thousands in Remploy factories

IF you’re disabled, you can compete for your country in the Paralympics.

But you can’t work for it, under this Tory-led government.

Britain today welcomes a second swathe of competitors to London 2012, while David Cameron sacks thousands of men and women in Remploy factories.

Twenty two closed down last week, throwing 1,000 on to benefits.

The works at Oldham and Worksop will shut today. Swansea follows next week, as the Paralympics get under way.

It takes hypocrisy of the highest level to attack the handicapped at such an emotional time, but our heartless, two-faced Prime Minister is equal to the task.

Cameron puts out the welcome mat for disabled athletes from round the world, while handing out P45s to workers in government-supported employment here at home.

OP: Remploy is a government-run firm in the UK which provides employment for disabled people. Instead of going after big corporation (and Tory donors) that don't pay their full whack of tax, they go after Remploy instead. Fuckers.

NYPD Gun-blazing Act Hits All Nine Bystanders.

NYPD Gunfire In Empire State Building Shooting Wounded All Nine Bystanders, Says Ray Kelly

New York Police Commissioner Ray Kelly said all nine bystanders wounded in Friday's Empire State Building shooting had been hit with police gunfire, CNN reported Saturday morning.

Gunfire broke out shortly after 9 a.m. on Friday when a gunman identified as 58-year old Jeffrey Johnson shot and killed former coworker Steve Ercolino near the Empire State Building.

Johnson attempted to flee the scene, but was thwarted after a construction worker who followed him tipped off police officers.

Police approached Johnson who aimed his gun at the officers before police opened fire, killing him on the spot.

The NYPD said officers fired 16 rounds with one officer shooting nine and another seven.

During a press conference held on Friday, Mayor Bloomberg had said some individuals may have been shot at by NYPD.

Less than two weeks prior to Friday's shooting, NYPD shot and killed a gun-wielding man in Times Square. The bizarre incident caused many to question if the NYPD had overreacted.

Since the chaotic incident, details have emerged describing a hostile relationship between Johnson and Ercolino, who both worked at Hazan Imports together until Johnson was laid off nearly two years ago.

I had no intentions of dropping another This Week in Blackness so quickly. I was going to post an essay i dropped on The Root about media & politicians but I'll hold off on that to address Romney, the GOP and the question of Blacks in the Grand Old Party. And thanks again for the support folks. About 4 years ago you guys started posting TWIB on _p and it's one of the reasons anyone started paying attention to them at all! You'll never know how much it mattered...

Ugh, I remember when this happened on that show Book of Daniel, which was about a priest who accepted his gay son and struggled with addiction.  Good show that was canceled because of certain affiliates refusing to air it. :(

Republican Convention Delayed

Republican officials delayed the start of the Republican Convention in Tampa on Saturday as Florida braced for Tropical Storm Isaac.

RNC Chairman Reince Priebus issued the following statement on the decision:

Due to the severe weather reports for the Tampa Bay area, the Republican National Convention will convene on Monday August 27th and immediately recess until Tuesday afternoon, August 28th, exact time to follow.

Our first priority is ensuring the safety of delegates, alternates, guests, members of the media attending the Republican National Convention, and citizens of the Tampa Bay area. RNC Convention officials and the Romney campaign are working closely with state, local and federal officials, as well as the Secret Service, to monitor Tropical Storm Isaac and preserve Florida's emergency management resources. Officials have predicted participants may encounter severe transportation difficulties due to sustained wind and rain.

The Republican National Convention will take place and officially nominate Mitt Romney and Paul Ryan, and the Party has other necessary business it must address. We also are remaining in constant contact with state and federal officials and may make additional schedule alterations as needed.

The Convention staff is working around-the-clock to ensure the delegations housed in storm-impacted areas have alternative housing if needed. The Committee on Arrangements will provide additional information to delegates and alternate delegates who are affected by Isaac by Sunday morning. We will also provide guidance to those delegates and alternate delegates who may encounter travel difficulties due to the storm.

We will begin issuing revised convention programming as early as Sunday.

We have an experienced team that will ensure changes are operationally smooth and create as little disruption as possible. The most important concern is safety, but our Convention program will proceed.

New Mexico RNC Committeeman Is Custer's Last Fan

A RNC National Committeeman told Governor Susana Martinez's staff that her agreeing to meet with Native Americans is disrespectful to the memory of Col. George Armstrong Custer, the infamous cavalry officer who killed thousands of Native Americans in the 1800s, according to emails obtained by ProgressNow New Mexico.

I can't even be boggled anymore. The Republicans just don't seem to have a decent member among them.

Racism, Bigotry and the Death of Respectable Conservatism

For the most part, I’ve tried to be restrained.

Although conservatives accuse those of us on the left of thinking that all critiques of President Obama are rooted in racism, this has certainly never been my argument. Indeed, I’ve written two books highly critical of Obama’s positions on a number of issues (from a place well to his left), and am fully aware that decent, honest people can disagree with Barack Obama from the right, too, without their disagreements serving as proof of some latent, let alone blatant, bigotry or anti-black bias.

That said, what I have also long maintained — and what seems increasingly evident as we move into the heart of the 2012 campaign — is that the style of opposition, its specific form, and its particular content are too often embedded in a narrative of white racial resentment, white racial anxiety, and a desire to “other” the president in ways that go well beyond the politically partisan. It is not that criticisms of Obama are quantitatively racist, per se, but rather that they are qualitatively so in too many instances; a distinction, yes, but one that does not alter the underlying reality.
