Out Of Control: Romney Tramples Over Debate Moderator

Candy Crowley Debate Moderating: CNN Host Spars With Romney Over Time

Candy Crowley asked a followup question. And then she asked some more followup questions. And the world didn't collapse. Her biggest challenge turned out to be Mitt Romney. Crowley went round after round with the Republican nominee, sparring with him over the rules of the debate and, at one point, doing a real time fact check on one of his comments.

Omaha schoolgirl dresses as a different historical figure each day

This is how Stella Ehrhart, age 8, decides what to wear for school.

She opens her closet. She opens her book, “100 Most Important Women of the 20th Century.” And she opens her mind.

Voilà, she is Billie Holiday, in a black dress with a red tissue-paper flower tucked into her strawberry-blond hair.

Behold, she is Grace Kelly in pink satin lace on her wedding day.

Poof, she is Burmese opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi, wearing a hat her aunt got her in Vietnam.

UK inconsistent on human rights

UK human rights boycotts are inconsistent, say MPs

The UK government has been accused of inconsistency in its dealings with other countries over human rights.

The Commons Foreign Affairs Committee compared the boycott of the Euro 2012 football championships in Ukraine over human rights, with ministers not taking any action over the Bahrain Grand Prix.

It said Bahrain should be on a list of "countries of concern" after the "brutal" suppression of protests.

An anti-anarchist witch-hunt

"I DO not look forward to what inevitably awaits me today, but I accept it...My convictions are unwavering and will not be shaken by their harassment. Today is October 10, 2012, and I'm ready to go to prison."

Thus wrote 24-year old Leah-Lynn Plante in a statement as she prepared to be jailed. Plante is the third anarchist activist in the Pacific Northwest to be put behind bars for refusing to testify before a federal grand jury. She could spend as much as 18 months in prison--the full length of the grand jury term.

Plante, along with Matthew Kyle Duran and Katherine "KteeO" Olejnik, have been imprisoned as part of the fallout from a series of raids on July 25 conducted by the FBI's Joint Terrorism Task Force--supposedly in response to instances of vandalism during this year's May Day protests in Seattle. The Task Force's warrant allowed agents to raid the homes of activists in three cities. The FBI insisted that residents hand over any "anti-government or anarchist literature," along with flags, black clothing, cell phones, hard-drives and address books.

"As if they had taken pointers from Orwell's 1984, they took books, artwork and other various literature as 'evidence,' as well as many other personal belongings, even though they seemed to know that nobody there was even in Seattle on May Day," wrote Plante.

Furthering the government fishing expedition, the three activists received subpoenas requiring them to testify in front of a grand jury, where they were asked questions regarding their political opinions and the political circles and individuals they associate with. This is a clear case of political leanings being used as proof of criminality. As Plante wrote, "They are trying to investigate anarchists and persecute them for their beliefs. This is a fishing expedition. This is a witch-hunt."

Two Sailors Arrested For Alleged Rape in Okinawa

Two U.S. Navy sailors have been arrested in Okinawa for the alleged rape of a local woman. The arrests come at a rocky time for the U.S. military presence on Okinawa, which is home to half the 50,000 American military forces based in Japan.

From sidelines, debate moderator Crawley becomes part of story

HEMPSTEAD, New York (Reuters) - As in pro football this season, many of the noisiest complaints after political debates have been directed not at the participants, but at the referees.

Tuesday's debate between Democratic President Barack Obama and Republican Mitt Romney was no exception, as moderator Candy Crowley of CNN came under fire for siding with Obama during one of his sharpest exchanges with Romney.

In that moment, Crowley walked into the middle of a national security controversy and contravened the wishes of both presidential campaigns that she remain largely a spectator in the second presidential debate.

Secret collusion between the 2 parties, funded by corporations, run by lobbyists

The way the two major parties control the presidential debates is a perfect microcosm of how political debates are restricted in general. Though typically shrouded in secrecy, several facts about this process have recently come to light and they are quite instructive.

I was on Democracy Now this morning along with George Farah discussing the ways these debates, designed to cast the appearance of fostering vibrant exchanges, are actually intended to constrict the range of debated views as much as possible. My segment (and the transcript to it) can be seen here, but it was the commentary of Farah - who is a genuine expert in the history of presidential debates - that I found revealing.

He described how the two political parties in the 1990s joined forces to wrest control over the presidential debates away from the independent League of Women Voters, which had long resisted the parties' efforts to shield their presidential candidates from genuine surprise or challenge. Now run by the party-controlled Commission on Presidential Debates, these rituals are designed to do little more than " eliminate spontaneity" and "exclude all viable third-party voices". Citing a just-leaked 21-page "memorandum of understanding" secretly negotiated by the two campaigns to govern the rules of the debates, Farah recounted:

"We have a private corporation that was created by the Republican and Democratic parties called the Commission on Presidential Debates. It seized control of the presidential debates precisely because the League was independent, precisely because this women's organization had the guts to stand up to the candidates that the major-party candidates had nominated. And instead of making public these contracts and resisting the major-party candidates' manipulations, the commission allows the candidates to negotiate these 21-page contracts that dictate all the fundamental terms of the debates."

NY evangelical college probes 'Obama' filmmaker

NEW YORK (AP) — A conservative scholar behind a high-grossing documentary that condemns President Barack Obama is under investigation by the evangelical college he leads over a report he took a woman who is not his wife to an event on Christian values.

The King’s College board announced the review on Tuesday, the day the conservative Christian newsmagazine WORLD reported event organizers had confronted Dinesh D'Souza about sharing a hotel room with a woman he introduced as his fiancee. D'Souza filed for divorce from his wife, Dixie D'Souza, a few days after the conference, California court records show.

The event, Truth for a New Generation, was held the weekend of Sept. 28 in South Carolina.

In a brief telephone interview with The Associated Press, Dinesh D'Souza, who became president of The King’s College in 2010, said he and his wife have been ‘‘living in a state of separation for two years.’’ He denied sharing the hotel room with the other woman.

‘‘Obviously, I wouldn’t have introduced her as my fiancee if I thought we were doing anything improper,’’ D'Souza said, adding they have called off their engagement.

The college, which was located in the Empire State Building before moving this year to lower Manhattan, aims to shape young Christians as future leaders in all sectors of society.

D'Souza is a former policy analyst under President Ronald Reagan and a prolific author known most recently for his critical works on Obama. He directed the film ‘‘2016: Obama’s America,’’ based on his book ‘‘The Roots of Obama’s Rage.’’Collapse )

TEPCO terminates damages payments for emotional distress to women that marry

TEPCO terminates damages payments for emotional distress to women that marry

Tokyo Electric Power Co. (TEPCO) has terminated damages payments to multiple women, who got married while taking shelter, for their emotional distress caused by the crisis at the Fukushima No. 1 Nuclear Power Plant, arguing that their livelihoods were restored through marriage, it has been learned.

There are no such provisions in the interim guidelines that define the scope of compensation for nuclear crisis-linked damage set by the screening committee of the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology. The Agency for Natural Resources and Energy in the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry, which oversees the status of compensation payments, also said, "Payments should not be terminated for reasons of marriage or job transfer." The two government agencies have started to try to figure out exactly what has been taking place.

According to a woman in her 30s and her family who evacuated to temporary housing in the central part of Fukushima Prefecture from their home in a planned evacuation zone in Futaba County near the crippled Fukushima nuclear power station, the woman got married to a man in Sukagawa in the same prefecture in October 2011 and moved to her husband's home.

When she requested the compensation payments for her mental distress for the 2011 September-November period in February this year, a TEPCO official in charge noticed the change of her family name and implied that the utility would terminate damages payments for her. TEPCO headquarters called her later to inform her that it had discontinued damages payments for November 2011 and thereafter, explaining that her livelihood was restored through marriage.

Gas Prices: There's Not Much Presidents Can Do About Them

When you pull up to that gas pump and nearly faint from how much it costs you to fill 'er up, you may be tempted blame the government for not doing enough to keep a lid on prices.

Resist the temptation. The truth is the global nature of the world's energy supply means that no president has much power over what you pay at the pump.

The question of whether the nation's chief executive can do anything to lower soaring energy costs has been a bone of contention between President Barack Obama and his GOP rival, former Mass. Gov. Mitt Romney.

That bone was tossed about in Tuesday's debate at Hofstra University in Long Island, N.Y.

“The proof of whether a strategy is working or not is what the price is that you're paying at the pump,” Romney said in response to a question from the audience. “If the president's energy policies are working, you're going to see the cost of energy come down."

If gas prices were driven by decisions made in the White House, it’s a safe bet than any incumbent president would do everything possible to drive them lower ahead of a re-election campaign. With the possible exception of the unemployment rate or the Dow Jones industrial index, it’s one of the few numbers voters care most about when they head to the polls.

But while the notion that the government could somehow control gasoline prices is appealing, the reality is that the price you pay is set daily, sometimes hourly, by market forces around the world.

Collapse )

Lots of bolding, I know, but I am SICK of people blaming the president for gas prices. In a market based economy, there isn't a whole lot any one person can do to make gas cheaper. Unless the US government was to subsidize the cost. But that would be SOCIALISM!

Mr. Romney’s Version of Equal Rights

Mr. Romney’s Version of Equal Rights
Source - The New York Times
Editorial: Published: October 17, 2012

It has dawned on Mitt Romney that he has a problem with female voters. He just has no idea what to do about it, since it is the result of his positions on abortion, contraception, health services and many other issues. On Tuesday night, he bumbled his way through a cringe-inducing attempt to graft what he thinks should be 2012 talking points onto his 1952 sensibility.

Another take away point from Dashiell Bennett:

"Finally, there's the hidden assumption behind his entire anecdote: That Mitt Romney apparently got elected to be the governor of a state without personally knowing any women qualified to work in government."

Stephen Harper Wooden Penis, Created By Rick Mercer, Up For Auction

Have you ever thought to yourself "I would really like to own a wooden penis that looks like Stephen Harper"?

No. Of course you haven't. No one has. But one lucky bidder will soon have this distinct honour(?)

The Calgary Sexual Health Centre is auctioning off a collection of hand-decorated wooden phalli - "Woodies" - painted by local and national celebrities as part of fundraising efforts for their 40th anniversary celebration.

Included in the collection is a creation painted by CBC star and satirist Rick Mercer.

Named "Lil' Steve," the dildo features a bespectacled Harper in a white shirt and blue tie. Atop his, ahem, head, is painted his trademark helmet-like, grey coif.

Around the base is a Conservative Party of Canada sticker that reads "For Display Purposes Only," lest anyone (God forbid) decide to actually take the demonstrative device for a test drive.

According to the Calgary Sexual Health Centre, these phalli are not used for sexual purposes, but rather as educational prop to teach proper condom usage.

There are currently 17 bids on the little fella, pushing the price up to $260.00. But with more than 10 days left in the auction. we're sure the price will, ahem, soar.

Rise to the occasion, Canada. Help out a great charity and claim the bragging rights. When else will this opportunity, ahem, come up?

This just makes me *rage*. Not only is so incredibly illegal - and yet, no one seems to be getting arrested or prosecuted - but people *still* don't know enough to realize that it's all a bunch of shite. How about somebody out there spend a few million on a public service ad explaining actual voting rules in each state? I'm just...furious.

Sorry for any mistakes - the 'preview' option seems to have vanished.
