Does anyone know if there is a site to find out if there's a protest near you in the US?
keeperofthekeys 17th-Jun-2009 03:15 pm (UTC)
http://iran.whyweprotest.net/ Had some listed, but it looks like the site isn't running the forum right now...maybe it will return to normal later.

I've been lurking here for a few months but what's happening in Iran right now made me want to sign up for an account to comment here.

You know, I thought twitter was somewhat dumb, and did not really get it. But seeing the role it is playing in the Green Revolution (and it appears it HAS become a revolution) in Iran is just mind boggling. To put it in perspective, it is like if we had had real time updates from people on the ground during the fall of the Berlin Wall, The Velvet Revolution, the Orange revolution, or Tienanmen Square, not just the evening updates on the news.

Th irony is, western media outlets that made their names during the above events have largely ignored this story. In regards to our foreign policy, this is as big as the fall of Soviet Communism, yet CNN was talking about cheeseburgers in a can, and the other outlets are just as bad. It is only now, 5 days into this, that they are really starting to pick this up. The BBC is the only media outlet that has been on the ball here.

This is just not a revolution for Iran. It is a revolution in how we get our information. Students, housewives, and professionals are demonstrating exactly why old media is dying: They just do not have a clue. When you can go to Twitter, Fark, Facebook, and LJ and get more reliable and up to date news than through the main media outlets, you have to wonder how these outlets have made it this far without folding.

Well, refresh those browsers and pray for the triumph of the Iranian people over the forces that oppress them.

RT @cabr1to : #iranelection #rg88 Iran's leaders fight Internet; Internet wins (so far) http://bit.ly/151KK4

Ha.
saigonostalker 17th-Jun-2009 03:21 pm (UTC)
You can't fight the Internet! We have an army of mouth-breathers on our side.
pumpkinwaltz 17th-Jun-2009 03:21 pm (UTC)
This is just a random observation, but I've been told that the reason that Iran's median age is so young is because after the last revolution, there was a bit of a baby boom. Interesting that the children of the last revolution are now fighting this one.

I know exactly how you feel, bb. Not a single one of my friends or family knows anything about what's going on, and I've been re-posting images and videos and articles on Facebook for days.
