NIAC blog says that "the Interior Ministry has refused Mohsen Rezaie's request to announce the results of the recount by the end of today. Hence Rezaie will officially announce his call for invalidating the elections and calling a new election tomorrow."

If true, WHOA. This guy used to be in charge of the Revolutionary Guards, y'all.

I hope it's true. That would be great.

Um, depending on the election results, the likelihood of them trying to blow us up is significantly different.

That's one reason they should care.
one_hoopy_frood 17th-Jun-2009 08:29 pm (UTC)
It was important, Parsi said, for any non-Iranian organization wishing to show solidarity with the opposition to ensure that “anything they do is two steps behind the opposition and not two steps ahead.”

I just wanted to point out that this has always been Obama’s MO. He’s always a step or two behind where his supporters want him to be, getting pulled along by their enthusiasm, rather than out ahead of them where he might get cut off. It’s a community organizer’s MO. You never get out ahead of your constituency. Instead you shape the playing field so that your constituency’s desires flow towards where you think they should go, and allow them to carry you along behind them.

- from here

I think it's definitely a point worth making, and now that it's been pointed out I do see that it has been his tendency in everything he does. What does everyone else think?
fruityphobia 17th-Jun-2009 08:34 pm (UTC)
I'd agree with that.
I also think it's the smartest move, especially with the tensions between Iran and the US as high as they are. He's trying to open things up for negotiation and if he comes out in support of the opposition and it turns out that the elections results were in favor of the ruling party, he would have put the entire thing in jeopardy.

Just my thoughts, I guess.
saramiskismet 17th-Jun-2009 08:29 pm (UTC)
The last time a crowd nearly this large gathered in the US, it was a celebration of the inauguration, the rewards of democracy.

It's a stirring contrast.
filbypott 17th-Jun-2009 08:31 pm (UTC)
Except the inauguration drew about 1 million people - last I head, there are over 3 million in Tehran.

Which is about 30 times more than Tienanmen Square, btw.
