Either way, things are seriously hitting a tipping point. I figure Khamenei was hoping calling for a ten-day recount of some places would placate the masses, but oh, look. I can only see everything progressing one of three ways: a massive crackdown and epic and violent proportions, new elections being called, or the ouster of the current establishment (ie, Khamenei being replaced and new elections held). It feels like it could honestly swing either way at this point. I'm on pins and needles, so I can't even begin to imagine the way the people in Iran are feeling.

Given the sudden surge of the media crackdown, though, I have a horrible feeling they are going to try Door No. 1, Violent Suppression.

IDK, it didn't exactly work, which is why we're talking about it. Had there been no Twitter and no internet and all info had been cut off, the coup would have been far more successful.

But world-wide knowledge, failure to completely cut off information both amongst protesters and the outside world, and the fact that despite the violence, people remain defiant.

That and you have high ranking political and spiritual leaders coming out one after another to condemn this.

I just feel like something has to give, and I'm daring to be optimistic that it will go a different way.

Oh, I don't think they'll be successful, either with the coup or the media crackdown, but they're definitely trying, which is why I'm worried things are going to get a lot more violent.

That said, the latest I've read is that some in the military are on the side of the protesters and have been protecting them from the basiji, who seem to be the ones being the most recklessly violent. And if the military turns on the people in charge, it's all over. In a good way.
