Anthony Badalamenti made a name for himself as a personal trainer who helped whip an overweight Freeport
Thursday, he earned a more sinister kind of fame - he was convicted of beating his girlfriend's 6-year-old son with a weightlifting belt.
Badalamenti, 31, of Merrick, did not look at the jury foreman as the verdict was read: guilty of second-
Badalamenti, who got a flurry of publicity after he was featured on "The Biggest Loser" for helping contestant Jim Germanakos lose 186 pounds, was acquitted of one of the eight counts he faced: a charge accusing him of assaulting the child about a week before the day last October when he was arrested.
Prosecutor Silvia Finkelstein told the jury that Badalamenti and his girlfriend, Jessica Muniz, 30, of Merrick, beat Muniz's son over a 10-month period in 2008, culminating in an incident in October when the family's landlord called police after hearing the child begging for mercy.
When police arrived, they found the child's buttocks and legs red and raw. Photos shown to the jury during the trial showed red lash marks across the child's lower body. Circular marks were left on his skin where studs on his mother's belt hit him.
The child testified at the trial.
Muniz's case is set to go to trial next month. Her lawyer, William Petrillo of Rockville Centre, declined to comment.
In his closing argument, Michelen argued that it was Muniz, not Badalamenti, who beat the child. He said if Badalamenti had been the attacker, the child would have been injured more seriously.
But Nassau District Attorney Kathleen Rice said her office will seek the maximum sentence for Badalamenti. "Anyone who could do this is a monster and a coward," she said. "But the system worked."
I found out today that the boy in this article is my coworker's nephew and that her brother has custody. She also says that the article isn't detailed enough, and that there's more to it. I hope this motherfucker and the boy's mother get the same treatment they gave this poor kid. I swear some people should just not have kids.
