LONDONDERRY — An animal lover turned himself in to police after allegedly punching a man who abandoned a cat on the roadside.
Jonathan Morales, 19, of Derry was charged with simple assault Wednesday. He was released on personal recognizance and is to appear in Derry District Court on July 28.
Morales was working at the Mohawk Drive Dunkin' Donuts on June 10, when the cat's owner, Anthony Griffin, came to get a cup of coffee about 8:30 p.m., according to a police affidavit.
Griffin and Morales knew each other, police said.
Griffin told police he was visiting with the night manager, Patrick Joyce, who also is a friend. The two were at the counter talking when Morales came from a back room and told Griffin to leave. Griffin told police he and Morales argued briefly, and then Morales punched him in the face, police said.
Morales was angry because Griffin abandoned a cat by the roadside, Griffin said.
Morales had offered to take the cat "as a last resort" if Griffin could not find a home for it, and told police he was upset the cat was abandoned anyway.
