Since Barack Obama weighed in on the arrest of Henry Louis Gates, we thought it was worthwhile to do a close reading of the law and the arrest report to see just how stupid the Cambridge Police Department was. This account is based on the police report, a statement from Gates' lawyer, interviews by Gates given after the arrest, and a radio interview that the arresting officer gave this morning.

FWIW, I'm glad Obama has stood by his comments on this. He didn't criticize the police officers themselves, he criticized their *actions*. And considering the fact that the charges were dropped almost immediately, I don't think that comment is out of line.
Should he have commented like that? Probably not from the standpoint of it becoming a distraction, but he did, and he certainly was within his rights to do so. I think it's one of the few non-political things I've seen him get this upset about.
